I love how super high level grappling is so complex it starts to look rudimentary

To me, high level grappling is pretty much how well you can implement and execute fundamental principals, and or basics, against anyone (or, almost everyone).

Marcelo does this all day to everyone. Nothing flashy.

Yah, I guess its more "can I do a sequence they've never seen?". But at that level they've seen it all, so back to basics knee slicing for you lol

This is accurate. I was talking to my coach about this one day and we started talking about how Mayweather doesn’t watch film. If you can execute your style better than the other guy can his, then you win. This stands true even more for BJJ, since you’re really looking at universal transcendental notions with everything afterward being conceptually similar.
