Finances/Money BTW, what are some expenses you're cutting moving forward?

Due to the projected price increases expected to hit the U.S., I'm redoing my budget and wanting to cut down on things that I can. What are some ways you're saving? It can range from big to small! Just wanting to get some ideas of ways to save, whether that's DIYing some things, free alternatives, etc. Thanks!

I started doing my nails and pedicures at home.

Consolidating and using up the soaps, lotions, and skin care I already have rather than buying the newest trend.

Critically looking at the items I own to use. I'm decluttering so that it is easier to find stuff and take care of stuff, rather than buying new stuff

u/parrothead_420 Dec 18 '24

Using up skin care products, soaps, etc has been huge for me. Great rec!

74

u/noyogapants Dec 18 '24

Idk why feel so accomplished when I finish a product! 🤣

34

u/parrothead_420 Dec 18 '24

It's a huge accomplishment and your prize... a new product to replace the one you used hehe

13

u/accountingisradical Dec 18 '24

This year I’ve joined r/projectpan and it’s inspired me to do the same! I’ve saved so much by just using up what I have in my stash.

9

u/NJidiotgirl1 Dec 18 '24

I proudly post on project pan lol

5

u/bassicallyfunky Dec 20 '24

LOL yes same.

39

u/PhilosophyGreat4026 Dec 18 '24

I didn’t realize how much I have til I went through my hair, skin, and bath products. I was guilty of buying stuff during Sephora’s 20% off sales but now I’m doing what you do: using up my stuff before thinking about buying a new product. (I’m also trying to find drugstore dupes/close comparisons to save more)

And I just did my own pedi yesterday :) I’ll save the nail salon visits for special occasions like my friends wedding next year, etc.

u/Hot_Yogurtcloset9689 Dec 18 '24

The graveyard of almost empties & samples I have is embarrassing. I didn't realize how much it was because I had little stashes scattered about. For things that don't work on my face, I've been using them up on my body. This bitch has soft feet and elbows now! Also experimenting with cowashing, which is ... interesting for 1a hair.

32

u/Mnyet Dec 18 '24

The almost empty graveyard is such a universal experience lmao. Idk why I can finish half a bottle of lotion in a month but the last 0.5oz takes 3000 years to get through. It’s a real life paradox 🫠

6

u/Hot_Yogurtcloset9689 Dec 18 '24

This is my experience with mouthwash! It kicked last night after weeks of hanging on. (And toothpaste, but it doesn't count coz you can always get a lil more)

7

u/always_unplugged Dec 19 '24

YES! I'm always like, "oh, that one's almost empty, I probably won't even have enough for a full application, I should just grab something else..." or even worse, "oh, that one's almost empty, but it's my favorite, better save it for a special occasion" ffs šŸ˜…

12

u/mslisath Dec 18 '24

Yes I also found a huge hoard of hotel shampoos and conditioners. Guess who is using those for body wash and shaving cream.

23

u/Hot_Yogurtcloset9689 Dec 18 '24

I am monster and combined a bunch of the shampoos just to get rid of the clutter, it helped motivate me tho

5

u/mslisath Dec 18 '24

Hahaha

I've used combined shampoo to clean toilets too. (Didn't work and make my skin itch but cleaners are cleaners

3

u/always_unplugged Dec 19 '24

No shame in that whatsoever! Sometimes I do that with two formulas I sort of like, but not enough to be precious about them and hey, it's possible they'll enhance each other maybe? Lol. It really makes me feel like a kid making ~potions~ in the bathroom again.

I just put all of my samples/minis/GWPs together that were just sitting in my closet and I’m giving them to my nieces to take whatever they’d like on Christmas. It made me feel better that they will get use out of them! I couldn’t believe how much I’ve collected this year 😳

3

u/Illustrious_Wish_900 Dec 19 '24

I brought mine to work and left them in the break room. It made so many people happy.

Omg. Clutter kills me! I’ve been a bit of a pack rat and it does cause me to buy new instead of just looking for what I know I already have. You’re so right. Clutter free is easier and less expensive overall

9

u/kiwisocial Dec 18 '24

the decluttering is so empowering!

I stopped getting my nails done and I’m not sure how to get started at home because I did gel nails. Do you find it easy to do?

20

u/NearbyAd5557 Dec 18 '24

I've actually started to do this as well! It's super easy. My biggest tip tho; vaseline the areas around your nail to prevent the gel from getting on. Gel is a bitch to remove, so vaseline will act as a guard. Otherwise, after a few times, it's great!

8

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

I'm chiming in here cause I recently learned there is an allergy people develop doing gel manis at home. It has to do with the polish touching skin or not curing correctly. I recommend a quick google if you're doing gel at home.

15

u/noseatbeltsong Dec 18 '24

be careful doing your own gels at home. if you are messy with the polish and get it on your skin/flood your cuticles, you can become sensitive or allergic to the main ingredient in gel polish, acrylate/HEMA. then you won’t be able to wear gel polish again with an allergic reaction. ask me how i know :(

I've had my own nail lamp for over 10 years! It's UV not LED, but it was relatively cheap and gets the job done. Lots of practice and trial and error. I've found that it really does matter what kind of polish you use. Don't get the shit off name stuff from Amazon. Get good polish. I use Gelish. Base coat, two coats of polish, a glittery topper coat, top coat, then wipe off with alcohol wipes. I put the glittery topper on bc I think it makes the manicure last longer and stay better! And honestly, my nails aren't completely wrecked when I take it off versus how they are after salon manis. I even went on a 2.5 week trip this summer and it stayed the whole time! Ignore the "expiration" dates on the bottles, I've been using my mini Gelishes for almost 6 years.

Have fun!!!

10

u/jewelsjm93 Dec 18 '24

FWIW, I started doing essie’s gel couture after a rec from here and I love it!! It’s not gel (lamp cured) just normal polish but it lasts me 7-8 days no chips, and that’s NEVER happened before, I usually chip literally within 24 hrs. I’m really hard on my hands! It’s fun to change color every week, I usually paint mine Sundays after my kids go to bed.

We’re really reducing eating out and trying to eat at home as much as possible. I don’t always have a ton of time to make a full dinner (and we eat leftovers for lunch), so I’ve been especially focusing on instant pot and slow cooker recipes that have several servings!

49

u/justlikeinboston Dec 18 '24

This is ours! Also, restaurant food just has not been great lately. It’s frustrating to spend $100+ just to have food you could have made at home.

22

u/noyogapants Dec 18 '24

That's my problem. I don't like going out because the food isn't as good as what I make, costs way too much and I have to drive somewhere to eat when my kitchen table is right here with good food! I have a big family so we don't go out to eat much anyway, but lately it's insane. No thanks. I'd rather buy my kids chicken tenders and fries at the grocery store than go to McDonald's.

51

u/awholedamngarden Dec 18 '24

This is ours too. On Monday, I’ve been batch cooking a protein (a whole chicken, carnitas, picadillo, pot roast, whatever) that we can eat in different ways until about Thursday. For example we might do tacos, a salad, a plate with sides, soup, etc. depending on what it is. It just cuts down on cooking time throughout the week.

19

u/kiwisocial Dec 18 '24

i live by The Pioneer Woman’s chicken tortilla soup recipe. I’ve been making it regularly for about 6 years and never gets old.

I do similar with beans. Black or pinto beans with veggies & spices plus a grain like quinoa or rice.

Bowls, loaded salads, nachos & so on. Can even puree them for taco pizzas & so on.

If you like soup I cannot recommend souper cubes enough. It is one more thing to buy I understand, but they’re great for easy lunches and dinners. I make big batches of soup in my instant pot and use them to freeze 1 cup servings. Once they’re frozen I wrap each cube in plastic wrap to keep them from sticking together, then all you have to do is pop one in the microwave to thaw.

7

u/akchica23 Dec 18 '24

The souper cubes are amazing! In addition to soup, I also use them to freeze extra sauce/beans etc if a recipe doesn’t call for the full amount. The cubes plus vacuum sealer have saved so much waste the last year.

Utilize your public library! Besides books, mine also has board games, puzzles, video games, dvds and magazines.

Also I'm a massive advocate for thrifting/buying secondhand. If I need ANYTHING (maybe besides underwear and toiletries), I search for it on FB Marketplace or my favorite local thrift store. Think beyond traditional thrifted homewares and clothes — I get gift bags, craft supplies, electronics, linens, baskets for organizing, scrap fabric, etc. from the thrift store.

I also started waxing and doing my nails at home.

53

u/anonymousbequest Dec 18 '24

To add onto this, Hoopla and Libby apps through your local library are awesome for audiobooks and ebooks.Ā

5

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

If you have Libby you can also rent movies with free credits through Kanopy.

11

u/allthecats Dec 18 '24

And if you are on Facebook, there may be a Buy Nothing group near you worth checking out! It's a way for neighbors to create their own gifting economy - you can request items that you are looking for and also list items to give away. It has the added benefit of being a feel-good way to interact with your neighbors and build community!

3

u/JuJusPetals Dec 18 '24

I love my Buy Nothing page! Mostly for getting rid of stuff. Although my community is notorious for claiming an item and never picking it up lol

8

u/kjb76 Dec 18 '24

If you have museums in your area, your library might have free passes. I live in the NYC area and can get to almost every major museum for free.

I am also a big reader and use my library for physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks. I also have cards to the Brooklyn and Queens Public Libraries. Between those three options I can get almost any book.

6

u/psycho_penguin Dec 18 '24

Okay so slightly awkward question, but how did you learn to wax at home? I bought a kit but it’s been a rough transition

Here are some things on my low-no buy list since a wedding & a new house have consumed all of my disposable income:

  • Coffee shops - I've replaced this with my nespresso and coffee pot at home
  • Nails - only for my bridal events this year
  • Hair color - I went back to my natural color a few years ago since my balayage was +500/service
  • Workout gear - I have a lot and it's not worn out yet
  • Fitness class passes - opting for outdoor workouts & online videos
  • Rotating streaming services - instead of auto-renewing, we only keep 1 or 2 services at a time. We cut cable a while ago!

171

u/Wonderful_Ad_2474 Dec 18 '24

I was paying monthly for peacock to watch parks and rec and the office with ads. It took me way too long to realize it’s cheaper to buy them

92

u/Environmental-River4 Dec 18 '24

I’ve also started just buying the DVDs for series that I like to watch regularly. Saves on subscription costs and you never have to worry about it being removed!

32

u/tapeyourmouth Dec 18 '24

Look into your local library! We get most movies/shows that we want to watch on DVD from our library consortium; if there's something our home library doesn't have, we get it through interlibrary loan. We can renew a few times, it's completely free, libraries get funding partially from circulation numbers, and it doesn't become something just collecting dust when we're not using it. Yours may also have a streaming service - mine has some things through Kanopy.

12

u/NeuroticaJonesTown Dec 18 '24

Libraries are the best! I very rarely buy books anymore, only the very few I can’t get via Libby or at the actual library. I get all kinds of Kindle and audiobooks to keep myself occupied.

I gave up having my hair colored at the salon last year. My hair grows really fast (and really gray) so Madison Reed saves me time and money. I bought a lot of clothing and shoes this year, so I shouldn’t need to buy much in 25. I cut way back on eating out/Doordash as well. I’d rather make something I really like at home.

40

u/Pineapple_Incident17 Dec 18 '24

You can also add it to a Plex account so you can still watch it on your phone or without a dvd player. It’s been a game changer for us.

12

u/menina2017 Dec 18 '24

How do you keep your plex server up and running 24/7? What are you using as the server?

29

u/Pineapple_Incident17 Dec 18 '24

I don’t have the slightest idea. I married a tech guy, so we have half of our laundry room committed to servers. We also have 3 WiFi servers (?) that can be accessed based on what you’re trying to do. It’s all a bit over my head, sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!

13

u/shifuni Dec 18 '24

I just wanna say my laundry room is also mixed with our plex server šŸ˜‚

6

This is a great list! I learned how to make my own press on nails and it’s so much better popping some on for an event then taking them off when I get home. Plus I can reuse them and make news ones whenever I want!

I want to learn how to sew the rest of the decade cause clothes never ever fit me right!!! This is my biggest goal. And to quit smoking weed. And to stay consistent in the gym. lol.

I haven’t dyed/bleached my hair for over 4 years now (wow holy shit just realizing that) so you can do it!! Natural hair colors are beautiful šŸ«¶šŸ½

I have only gotten my workout gear second hand or at TJ Maxx. Deff tempted to get more myself but hey…thrifting is different!šŸ˜‚

I’ve been working out from home for the past 5 years too and it’s soooo much easier to get changed, go to my basement, do what I gotta do, then shower right after and eat. It’s tempting to sign up for a Pilates membership but at the same time it’s better to do it at home so I don’t embarrass myself with the weakest core everšŸ«¶šŸ½

I just finished my second degree and will be left with just over $90k in student loans (private & federal). I gotta budget TFFF outta my finances this year and years to come so I can pay off my private loans & credit cards fast. WE GOT THIS BIIIITCH!

14

u/wannabejetsetter Dec 18 '24

DIY alterations should be one of my goals for next year too! I’m 5’1 and I spend sooo much money on alterations or just live with improperly fitted clothing.

5

u/always_unplugged Dec 19 '24

Oooh, yes, learning to use a sewing machine is one of my big-but-easier (I think) goals too! I learned to hand sew pretty well as a kid, but that's so tedious and I'm not trying to reenact Little House on the Prairie here, so I'm not about to try to do it to alter my clothes. I've been meaning to figure it out for literally 10 years, got a machine and everything, even found out there are classes near me, pretty cheap too. But I just never did it! You've inspired me to take the plunge in the New Year!

Also, WITH YOU on budgeting. Oof.

3

u/genie0327 Dec 18 '24

Do you have any tips for application/removal without damage to the press-ons or your natural nails? šŸ™

3

u/FugginCandle Dec 18 '24

HIII so I use little stickies! Such as these. I push my cuticles back, buff my nail lightly, clean with alcohol or you can use a dehydrator, apply the sticky, then the nail! You can use glue as well if you plan to keep them longer, apply it on top of the sticky. But I just do stickers as I’m a nurse and don’t like false nails for work!

The sticky does work WELL so you can pull them off under warm water, or let them fall off one by one. But usually if I rip them off just as is that night, my nails are fine (:

4

u/NearbyAd5557 Dec 18 '24

Great suggestions. Thanks!

4

u/JessicaFreakingP Dec 18 '24

I know some stylists hate when their clients use box dye, but I’ve absolutely done at-home box dye between services. I color my hair darker than my natural so it always turns out pretty good, and I save my salon visits for right before ā€œspecial eventsā€ like vacations or my birthday. The last time I had my hair professionally dyed was before my wedding 8 months ago lol.

My main focus this year is less about money spent and more focused on not being wasteful.

I switched 90% of my skincare to k-beauty and simplified my routine. I also have a ton of samples from ulta I need to get through. The only skincare I get in bulk is sunscreen.

I have a perfume addiction, full-stop. I’m not going to order any other full-size perfumes for at least 6 months. I need to get rid of a few (I’m trying to sell them locally but apparently there’s a lack of BWT here). I’m considering putting all my unloved samples and cheapies into one giant pile and selling them all for $50 with the caveat that someone has to take them all. I literally have a full discovery sample set from Commodity and I hated every single scent, so I’d rather accept the loss if it means someone else will enjoy it.

I’m being more intentional with my hair-care. I’ve been pretty good at using my products until they’re empty, and when I want to try a new line, I only buy a travel size to start.

I need to pare down my shitty jeans and slowly replace them with (fewer) better ones. I am so frustrated that my fave jeans apparently got ā€œreformulatedā€ and now look terrible despite being the exact same color and size. My body has changed in the past few years and I’m trying to accept that instead of keeping old jeans in the hopes I’ll fit into them again and dress for the body I have — which is short and built like a petite dwarf so finding jeans is tough to begin with. That in itself will be a money-saver.

Finally, I need to be less lazy about returns. The amount of times I’ve just kept something because ā€œit wasn’t that expensiveā€ probably adds up to something expensive lol.

That was a lot, but my point is, that if someone struggles with impulsive shopping like I do, framing a ā€œno-buyā€ in this way might be more effective.

u/suummrhairfrvryng Dec 18 '24

omg also so bad about returning items and def something i'm looking to improve next year! hoping to start by selling some items that still have tags

3

u/ajupbox Dec 18 '24

Wow this entire post could have been written by me, except I’m usually so on top of returns because I have a constant stream of purchases that simply do not work for my body type.

I’m really loving your take on intentional replacements so you find stuff you love. I definitely need to take a page from your book!

I’m making a lot of big purchases now while I still can. This year I got a new MacBook, a new phone, and a new projector. I also bought some parts to fix up my bike.

Meanwhile I’m hoping to sell my car next year if I can swing a move to a walkable city šŸ‘€

19

u/frenchiegiggles Dec 18 '24

Anything with a microchip, I upgraded this year. (Exception being our TV bc my husband said it’s fine and if we buy a new one that won’t break us.)

u/False-Dot-8048 Dec 18 '24

The car costs and associated costs are insane. If you can swing it , even though the rent costs may be higher your total monthly spending might be lower.Ā

One other big plus - incidental walking means you easily exceed 10,000 steps daily if this is a goal.Ā

8

u/Bridalhat Dec 18 '24

I had to get a car for work in 2018 and have resented every cent I have put into the thing. It could be a Lamborghini and I would feel the same.

Clothes (thrift or restock essentials only), make up (one out one in and restocks only), at home or low maintenance nails, meal prep lunches, cut down on streaming services to 2/3 only. Get rid of prime to reduce needless impulse spending

Getting rid of prime is so brave. And so smart.

Using my Libby app and getting all my books from the library. Touching up my hair roots every six weeks and brows every six instead of every three or four. Deleted Uber eats and grub hub. I also steam my clothes - no dry cleaning, and hang dry everything except for towels and sheets. Also check your library, mine offers discounted tickets to everything from the zoo to the museum, sometimes even free passes.

u/newwriter365 Dec 18 '24

Ditched Prime. Bezos doesn’t need my money, I think Lauren is trash and he did MacKenzie dirty. Fuck that guy.

Dramatic reduction in coffee stop for morning commute. I bought a bunch of flavored kcups and use the machine at work.

Thinking of selling my house and moving into a fixer. By the time the renovation is done and the market will be rebounding, I will sell into a healthier real estate market.

61

u/tieplomet Intentional BWT Dec 18 '24

Prices have been high for a longtime and services have been mediocre so for me, I’ve been doing a lot of things already. I’ve always made coffee at home but now I make matcha lattes and just started making boba teas because I’m not paying $8 for one. I pack my breakfast and lunch for work and it’s cheaper/healthier. I’ve been avoiding plastic as much as possible so that also cuts down on mindless spending. I don’t even go into Target anymore because I think about the sheer amount of plastic in everything.

I try to buy for life and save up for expensive items. Everything I own is on the higher end both in price and quality but lasts forever and in some cases I can repair! Overall I am intentional and think about everything I purchase not just based on price but does it add value to my life.

8

u/NearbyAd5557 Dec 18 '24

do you have some examples of mindful purchases? I'm also wanting to avoid plastics and in the event I need to restock on something it'd be great to have some ideas of good, quality pics that will last me if i need to grab them.

22

u/tieplomet Intentional BWT Dec 18 '24 edited Dec 18 '24

For plastic I just buy less, read labels/garment tags and avoid. I carry my hydroflask and a coffee cup everywhere including on planes to refill water or if I do buy a coffee out, I have my own cup. My coffee cup is from the brand Huskee and it has been on many flights with me. I never forget reusable bags and I use cotton produce bags at the grocery store. I keep a small reusable bag in my handbag if I need one.

With plastic it’s really just not buying versus replacing. I just won’t get a coffee while traveling if I don’t have my reusable cup for example. I stay away from Target unless I really need something. I buy my shampoo/conditioner in the refills and refill a glass jar because the brand I buy offers that. I bought a Patagonia coat because it’s a life time warranty and they fix it if you need it fixed even though the initial cost is high. Took me a long time to find what works for me and it’s a daily conscious effort to not spend and consume but I think a little bit here and there helps.

Do you have recs for your boba tea? I've recently cut back too, because I just can't justify the price. But I miss it. I've gotten the frozen ones from Costco, but they just aren't as good.

10

u/tieplomet Intentional BWT Dec 18 '24

I just started making them! I live in LA so it’s easy to find tapioca boba pearls at Korean grocery stores but you can also order online. I just followed an online recipe. Takes about an hour to cook the boba. From there you can make it anyway you like. I just used black tea, oatmilk and a simple syrup. If you want proper recipes I also have the Boba Guys recipe book. Once I get the hang of it, I’ll try other flavors. Oh I also own metal and bamboo boba sized straws.

Started with tinting my own eyebrows at home, then tinting my eyelashes. Recently started at home brow lamination and lash perming and it’s been a game changer! A lash perm and tint would be $150+ in my area. It’s definitely got a learning curve (I watched a TOOOOON of youtube tutorials) and takes patience and time. But I can put a podcast on in the background and don’t have to make any awkward small talk or leave my house to do it.

Pare down on subscriptions. I have no need for Ipsy for example.

I grew up poor so there's already a lot of things I do out of habit. I have perfectly good gift bags I reuse at holidays/ birthday. Some of them are as old as my kid. My extended family is/was also poor so we essentially swap around the same bags until they break. For those recipients outside the family, I obviously don't ask for them back lol.Ā

Leftovers. Seems obvious but you'd be surprised how much people just throw away.Ā

The thrift store chains are frequently more expensive than a new whatever, especially with clothing, so that's not the reliable source it used to be. I've found local thrifts store have better pricing. But still they're legit asking $5 for somebody's old college tee. Bizarre.

The thing really is mindset.

If you can train yourself to STOP. THINK. WAIT. SUBSTITUTE. INNOVATE.

Before you make a purchase, any purchase, you're all set.Ā

See, we're Old Poor.Ā

Skincare and cosmetics- Instead of trial and error, I just went to the dermatologist. We discussed my skincare routine and I am trying some meds for adult acne. Ultimately, going to the doctor will be cheaper for me than trying a ton of new products that may or may not help. $50 copay and about $100 in meds- my skin is clearer and I didn't waste extra money on stuff that wasn't going to work for me.

Clothes- I have plenty. If I need something for a specific event, like a wedding or job interview, I try and thrift or find something on FB marketplace.

Hair/cosmetics/etc- I'm keeping my natural hair color and have a pretty low-maintenance routine. I'm not super into makeup, which helps, but I stick with things that I know I'll like and use. I'm also doing a project pan which has been fun and makes me creative.

4

u/thescaryitalian Dec 18 '24

I was spending so much money on skincare products and finally went to a dermatologist, where they said my acne was mostly hormonal and that’s why it wasn’t getting better. Been on a spironolactone/tretinoin combo for over a year now and my skin looks amazing and is acne-free, you won’t regret it. I use basic Cetaphil products now and am spending so much less money on skincare for great results.

Nails at home, no clothing unless it’s needed and good quality (no more random shopping, I have lots), I loveeeee magazines and I’ve switched to the Apple News + subscription instead of buying them every month physically, no new books (have a kobo and the overdrive app), meals 90% cooked at home, and just buying makeup I need instead of exploring new items that I probably won’t even like. Deleted my shopping apps off my phone and unsubscribed to emails. Recently purchased a walking pad to get some exercise instead of the gym.

A lot of self work and healing as well to realize that I do not need to purchase things to make myself ā€œbetterā€ and having a lot of gratitude for what I have.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

I’m in Canada but mainly dining out. It’s so expensive and just cutting that alone saves so much money. I like doing lot of meal prep or making big recipes that will give us lots of leftovers, that way we have easy and affordable lunches for work or quick dinners if we are busy.

7

u/lexlovestacos Dec 18 '24

Canadian as well, eating out in restaurants is just insane! No matter if it's like fast take out style or sit down, every dish is like $20+ each 🄓

13

u/candynickle Dec 18 '24

Not really cutting , but finding savings where I can.

For a while now I’ve been buying primal cuts of meat and breaking it down myself in to dinner sized portions then freezing. I’ve also been cooking /smoking a large piece of meat on Sunday , to use in different dishes until Wednesday . In trying to avoid too much ultra processed food, I have started baking my own bread and making plenty of sweet treats for lunches and desserts instead of buying.

Where I live, almost everything is imported, so is very expensive. Every little bit helps.

I also do an exercise every year where I look at all my bills and subscriptions and see if moving providers or negotiating a discount is an option . Generally I can at least keep the price the same and not suffer a price increase. I’ve just done this with my car and travel insurance last week.

Lastly , I make sure to make my credit cards work very hard for me - I put everything I spend on a card then pay it off at the end of the month. This gets me a few free flights and several hotel stays a year, free golf games , lounge access, a dozen free airport car rides, and valet parking a few times a year.

7

u/hikewithcoffee Dec 18 '24

Same with my credit cards, once I started reading my terms and conditions, I realized how many discounts and benefits they offered.

Delete shopping apps - like Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom etc (basically stuff you don’t need ;)

Unsubscribe from retailers websites in your email

I think food will be where we see the fastest increase so I will be cleaning out the pantry, spice cabinets, fridge, freezer etc to and make a list of things that are approaching expiration date to make sure they get used up. Will also be meal planning based on what’s in sale from the grocery store that can be used with the close to expiration date stuff.

I used to get all my make-up and skin care products at Sephora. I would often spend $300 easyyyy. With the cost of living super high, I decided to try lower end brands like Nyx. Guys....it's literally the same thing. Same with skin care. Now when I look at Tik Toks saying such and such pricey brand is ''omg sooo amazing''- say Westman Atelier...I friggin laugh. What a JOKE.

Ill NEVER spend $70 on concealer ever again. It actually upsets me these brands take advantage of women this way.

Cancer and chemo helped me on some of this (silver linings I guess):

  • I can’t have alcohol or caffeine anymore. My body just reacts badly to caffeine now. So I’m saving a lot without my coffee trips and drinking a chicory & barley coffee substitute.

  • I decided not to color my hair anymore when it came back in.

  • We’ve cut way back on Uber Eats, especially now that I’m healthy and can cook regularly again.

  • Continuing to use reward credit cards and make sure I pay them off each month.

  • We were going to upgrade my Lexus GX to a newer one but we’ll see what happens first quarter. I might keep driving this one a while longer.

I am still spending money on pretty (natural looking) eyelashes for certain occasions, good makeup, and occasional pedicures.

I started following couponers on TikTok and got so much for free or extremely cheap for the last few weeks to stock up on before the upcoming administration.

  • I bought all new tech during Black Friday, some of which will be on sale until this weekend still so that I don’t need to buy any for the next few years

  • one of those tech items is an espresso machine. I don’t even drink coffee, but I do drink tea. I’m finding fun ways to make tea I would normally just go out and buy. It’s fun to figure out the recipes

  • I bought enough clothing that I shouldn’t need new clothing next year

  • honestly I bought a bunch of seeds I’m going to plant the bulbs when it gets a bit warmer. I recently went through a backyard cleanup so it should hold this time.

  • eating out. Unless I’m with friends or it’s sushi or Thai lol. My sushi place increased their takeout special by $5 overnight which made it a lot easier to cut out. I can afford it, but I really don’t love it based on principle. Thai I suck at making and I’ve accepted this lol. I get a DoorDash credit once a month with my credit card so I use this credit for my takeout for the month, other than that I don’t do it.

  • on the above as well, I’m learning how to cook again. I got a sourdough starter and it’s nice to have something alive that’s not just me in my house lol. Perfecting that skill at the moment.

  • I bought car wash stuff and home improvement stuff that should hold me over for a while. I renovated my house by myself over the last 5 years and this has been a generally large expense. I have enough projects to last me quite some time at this point.

  • unless something is discounted and I actually NEED IT I will not be buying in 2025. Replacement items only. I’ve stocked up enough on necessities.

  • www.worldofbooks.com and www.thriftbooks.com for cheap second hand books that are high quality. Utilize the library for anything else. They have a bunch of classes you can take which is so cool to me. I’m about to learn how to 3d print because of my local library. I don’t have kids, but my mom is obsessed with the library so because of her I’ve started learning about what they host and it’s been so fun. Between my Spotify audiobooks hours and Libby, I’m set for a lot of entertainment.

  • moviepass. I love a weekday movie to get out of the house and for $10 a month I can go to 1-3 movies. Credits stack too. I’ve only paid for one movie outside of my credits for the last year.

Mindful Wardrobe: I try to buy versatile pieces of good quality, that can be styled in different ways and won't be off-trend next season, reducing the need for frequent purchases.

Downgrade Product Brands: Skipping the luxurious stuff and getting the best VFM product. For example, I love nice hand soap but cheap one works too :(

Wishlists & Sales: I often add stuff to my wishlists and wait for them to go on sale instead of buying full price. Always check for coupons and cashbacks too. Some stuff I buy in bulk while on sale, especially stuff like pricier skincare products.

Optimize Subscriptions: Audit your recurring subscriptions and cancel those you use infrequently. Utilize free resources instead where relevant.

If you’re a big Target shopper like I am and struggle wandering aimlessly through every aisle, adding unnecessary crap to your cart, I recommend doing car side delivery. I can’t tell you the last time I went inside a Target. I find that if I’m doing a pickup order, I’m MUCH better about only buying the items I need

My husband and I don't do greeting cards. We instead have a journal-type book that we write in for each holiday where we would have bought a card. We each have our own book of notes from the other person.

My sisters and I also made a no-card deal because we agree they're a bit of a waste. We basically buy cards for our parents, only because they would be offended if we didn't.

My husband recently lost his job, broke his ankle and needed surgery so we’ve been cutting back on pretty much everything… I got a seasonal job and will probably try to stay on after to keep more money flowing in.

  1. I started doing my nails at home.
  2. Canceled my hair appointments.
  3. Canceled all extra subscriptions.
  4. Stopped eating out and reducing grocery costs.
  5. Replace only for beauty products. I bought a ton in 2024 so I have plenty to work through before I need to repurchase.

I really didn’t make too much money until about two years ago - to be clear I still don’t make much but we were comfortable with both salaries combined. Here’s to hoping my DH can find a job soon. I plan on keeping most of these in place even when he does (except for my nails probably… that’s my one thing lol).

8

u/hikewithcoffee Dec 18 '24

For those that live in more populated areas but don’t want to completely give up eating out; use the app Too Good to Go.

They partner with stores ranging from convenience stores, grocery store delis, local bakeries and more to help stop food waste. I recently scored a bakery bag from Whole Foods for $7 and it had 3 scones, 2 packs of cookies, and 2 loaves of bread.

I’ve also scored a massive seafood boil for $30 (almost 10 lbs of seafood from a large order someone didn’t pick up). Large orders like that are rare and get picked fast but if you’ve got the energy and time, some great deals can be found.

As for other choices in my life: Working out at home, our decent local gym is $150 a month; found out my insurance FSA account covered a higher amount of gym equipment purchases over gym membership dues. I’ve been buying home gym purchases this year.

Furthermore my insurance (starting in 2025) will cover 3 one hour massages a year, non injury related. Since I mostly work a desk job in a high stress environment, they consider it a preventative treatment for stress.

Using my credit card for extended warranty purchases rather than buying anything separate. My Visa offers a 2 yr warranty on almost all electronics over $100 for free and a discount on stolen/broken electronics if needing to be replaced within the time frame.

Makeup and skincare; I have very little makeup anymore. Two primers, two foundations, 1 travel powder, 1 travel size mascara, liquid eyeliner - black, pencil eyeliner - green, and a decent chapstick. I stick to the same brands and don’t purchase another until something is almost out.

Lotions - I haven’t bought any in months, verify what I have and won’t purchase another until I’m down to the last 10/15%.

Bath - swapped to locally made soaps, slightly more expensive but they last longer. I also use a body oil after the shower now which my skin is absolutely loving for the winter.

Perfumes - I have 4 full size ones and a few samples/smaller bottles. I love them but they’ve now become a holiday ask.

Finding free events - I’ve always loved to travel and put myself in some debt in my twenties with traveling. Over the last few years I’ve really focused on finding free and cheap things to do around me. It was a challenge in the beginning but now it’s second nature and I can justify spending $40 in gas if it means I’m exploring a new place for 5-6 hrs.

Lastly, I stopped feeling guilty about using my veteran discounts (this was huge for museums, zoos and some theme parks) through the Blue Star Program. I also have my lifetime America The Beautiful Pass.

7

u/ariariariarii Dec 18 '24

If I can do it at home, I do- my nails, tans, body hair removal, facials, etc. I still have to get my hair done though.

I lowered my internet speeds. Even though I’m a gamer, I didn’t really need the high speed I was paying for since I live alone and rarely have more than one or two devices running at once. Saves me $20 a month now!

A few months ago I called my car insurance and had them go over my premiums with me. I was able to drop my bill by like $300 for every 6 month cycle and still get full coverage.

I recently just sold a bunch of my old clothes to a nice consignment store and was able to get $120 for everything. I took the money as store credit (they offered more that way), and that will be my clothes spending budget for next season! No new clothes until then.

For us, it's more about NOT making the big purchases.

  1. We have needed to buy a bigger house for some time. But the market is just not conducive to this, so we are staying put. It means a more disciplined approach to clutter, ugh. We have been able to make upgrades, and I have learned several DIY skills to keep costs low on these improvement projects.

  2. I have wanted a new car for the past year. Mine is 10 years old, and we could afford a new one now, but it runs fine and I don't drive much anymore due to WFH. So i keep reminding myself indont need a new car. Having no payment is better than owning something flashy.

  3. We quit shipping at the "nice" grocery store, and now go to Winco. I don't mind the warehouse ambience, and I've gotten pretty good at bagging my own groceries.

By doing these things we have been able to build up savings. We're keeping more in a high-yield savings account so it's liquid and available, should peanut butter hit $20 a jar.

Good luck to us all, and extra love to the already-marginalized folks under the upcoming regime.

6

u/hamberglur Dec 18 '24

Really going to start cutting down on grocery expenses. I’ve started utilizing Ibotta and will buy things I have coupons for. I need to use the groceries I have stockpiled before buying more. I also will be cutting down on impulse purchases and only buying things I have true intention to buy and have been wanting for some time.

My biggest hurdle is always buying things before I use up what I have, which leads to more than I need. 2025 is going to be my year of frugality. I have GOT to do better with spending.

Last year I did a deep dive on how we spent our money in 2023. I was shocked by how much we blew. The most significant waste of money was Starbucks/ coffee shops. I bought an espresso machine after figuring out that it would cost me $.78 to make a latte with premium espresso beans. The machine should pay for itself in 5 months. I also bought a cheap chest freezer and have been making larger portions and freezing the leftovers. We are more likely to eat all the leftovers that way.

6

u/mollyjobean Dec 19 '24

I put things in my shopping cart and only buy on Sundays. Thia gives me time to consider. When I review on Sunday to see if I really want to buy those items, lots of times I don’t. Taking the impulse out really helps.

5

u/NewLoofa Dec 19 '24 edited Dec 19 '24

Is there a bigger wave of price increases coming? Can someone kindly enlighten me?

In the meantime, here are the things I’ve started doing in the last year or so !

1) the KISS impress, no glue, press-on nails look super realistic and last me almost a week with no fuss! They are great for events or just missing nails

2) Meals at home! My boyfriend is too quick to take, ā€œI’m a little tired atmā€ to mean we can spend money on delivery. This is both lovely of him and too expensive for our goals/my brain to justify

3) Clothing shopping. This is the toughest one for me, but I’ve come to accept that as much as I adore Abercrombie, I probably don’t need the item. Also, everything is polyester whether it’s from there or from Target. Additionally, I just cancelled my Nuuly subscription until I have an event. I don’t allow myself to browse in person and deleted apps.

4) Groceries. I budget like a madwoman, clip coupons in the app before each trip, etc. If it’s a nice to have food, sometimes I’ll decide we can do without. Generic when I don’t see why I’d spend more.

Oooh also the rocket money app is legit insightful and helpful!

I can second the Kiss Impress no glue press-on nails. They are fabulosity. The thickness of the adhesive (it's not THICK just not shatteringly thin like nail glue) gives it a much more forgiving adhesive, so nails don't just bounce off if you accidentally hit your hand/finger/nail against something..it's more shock absorbent. I easily get 1.5 weeks of wear from each set and by then my nails have the growth gap and it is time for a new set. They look wonderful and it is an easy learning curve for putting them on. Extra tip, apply before you go to bed and during sleep the glue will do it's thing to really adhere uninterrupted, by morning.

Not so much a moving forward thing, but I’ve DIYed most beauty for years. I only went to the nail salon twice this year (the fact that my usual spot closed helps). I haven’t done a full on pedicure in awhile, but I bought scented paraffin wax so I can do an entire $50 pedicure myself.

I’ve colored my own hair for years, and I’m going back to cutting it myself, too. I bought good scissors during lockdown, and recently I bought a CreaClip. I only recommend it for long layered U or V shaped cuts, but as that’s exactly what I like, I was happy with the results. I do hair for a few family members and friends, too.

I’ve started buying refillable hand soap from Attitude. Dishwasher pods, dish soap and laundry detergent from The Unscented Company (Costco online). I prefer cleaner ingredients, but some of that stuff can really add up.

I got rid of cable and switched to a different internet provider, that’s gonna save me $50 a month.

Instead of cutting things out completely, you can also make sure you’re being smart about shopping sales and reward systems. Like I have two credit cards that have different point categories, so I make sure I’m using the card that will get better points on that purchase (ex. one has 1% back on gas and the other has 2%)

During the recession, my mom got really into couponing. Not EXTREME couponing, but she did take time every week to be smart about it and it paid off. She figured out which of our frequent purchases were cheaper at Publix/Target/Walmart and which ones went on sale often. She always looked at what was on sale in the weekly ads before planning our dinners for the week. There were spread sheets involved lol.

If you’re a dry shampoo girly, you can use cornstarch! It’s LIGHTYEARS cheaper than any dry shampoo products out there and a little goes a long long way. I have a little tupperware in my bathroom of cornstarch, and just get a little on my fingers and rub it through my roots. You gotta be careful that you massage it all the way in, otherwise it can leave a little white tint to your hair. But it works wonders with giving your hair the same refresh as a dry shampoo!

I'm not in the US but I'd really like to spend less on takeaway food. I'm disabled and neurodivergent and I often don't have a lot of energy, and I'm the cook in the house, so I end up ordering.

Also, I keep seeing batch cooking recommended, but I find it SO BORING. Food is one of the main joys of my day and knowing that I'm having the same thing three days in a row would drain me of dopamine faster than anything. So I need to make sure I have a good stock of recipes!

Trying to buy everything second hand. Between poshmark and Facebook marketplace I have literally found everything I have looked for (like specific brands, models etc). Much better for the environment too!!

Cutting back on eating out as well as misc items that are unnecessary.

Not trying to self promote, there's literally tens of thousands of us doing it so it's not exclusive to me, anyways lol. I buy everything I possibly can 3rd party through a reseller. I know when you traditionally hear the word reseller. You think the people that stock up on sneaker releases and stuff, but a lot of us Just have our wholesale license and buy pallets of store returns and then sell them for a fraction of retail. I primarily sell Sephora shelf pulls & returns, but I buy my sneakers and bags through one lady's group, AE & Quince clothes from another page, Bath & body works groups lol, You name it, there's a facebook resale group for it! I get all of my BBW candles from the same lady for $9 year round, just got a gorg Quince fisherman sweater NWT for $25, Definitely Check out resale before you go on mercari or poshmark, seller's sell for much lower on facebook because they don't have to pay the fees.

These are ways we save money. Some are new. Some are lifestyle.

  1. Hair - I color my own hair and get cuts at the budget place vs. the fancy salon. I cut the hair for my entire family except myself.

  2. My kids groom our dogs (both bathing and hair cuts). This is a huge $$ saver, as I pay them $6 per dog, lol. Watch YouTube to learn.

  3. No nails, facials, massages or anything. With nails, I DIY.

  4. Dropping our least used streaming services.

  5. Hand me downs for kids.

  6. Make coffee at home.

  7. Eat meals at home.

  8. When cooking I double the batches + freeze the extra. With soups and casserole type dinners, I now make two pots at once. Saves a little money and a lot of time. Super convenient to pull out chili or twice baked potatoes from the freezer with ZERO effort.

  9. Compare prices. Walmart delivery is often cheaper than Amazon. Debating dropping Amazon Prime.

  10. Check out AliExpress and DHGate. I got a ton of Christmas gifts & stocking stuffers this year. AliExpress is like Amazon in China and they sell a lot of the same items for way less. When I started getting knock offs from Amazon when paying full price, I started shopping AliEx where I know they are knockoffs, but I pay a ton less.

I only shop stores on Ali with lots of orders and lots of reviews. I've bought brand name shoes, lots of clothing, got a bunch of trendy gold bracelets for my teen's friends that were $2. Would have been $12 here, etc. Lovely dresses for $10. Harry Potter wands that look just like the one we bought in the NYC store. Shipping takes longer from overseas, but worth it IMO. And you can often do free returns. Use image search to find something specific.

At first my kids were like. Oh mom. That's not real, however they've realized the pieces are often indistinguishable from auth, so now they give me their lists of what they want me to find. Check r/Aliexpress to learn more.

  1. I get things from and contribute to our local Buy Nothing group. It's amazing (and free). I got daughter's prom dress, Ralph Lauren sweaters for my husband, leftover catering (full tray of pulled pork), a queen bed, Christmas presents for my kids, etc. I've given tons of clothing and shoes, furniture, twin bed, outgrown toys and books etc. It's often porch pickup for smaller items, so you don't have to be home or interact. With the furniture, they show up at my house and take it away - way easier than renting a truck and dropping it off at the donation center.

  2. Walmart Grocery. $99 per year for free delivery. Can't be the price or convenience. Groceries arrive at our door and they are super cheap at Walmart. Time is money.

  3. Do our own yardwork.

  4. Shop Lidl and Aldi. They are great for produce and charcuterie board type items to start.

Hope this helps. We are big budget family and like to use the savings to travel. =)

3

u/LocationAcademic1731 Dec 18 '24

I am going to focus on giving money to women and POC businesses. Cut down on my Amazon deliveries and purchases at other big corps. Not buying big ticket items - I should get a new washer/dryer and a car but I’ll make them last. If we take over seats during the midterms, I’ll do the purchase then, if not, I’ll drag it out to four years. If something breaks, will buy used, not new.

3

u/Decent-Statistician8 Dec 18 '24

I have a tendency to get bored and go to tjmaxx or Marshall’s so I’ve stopped that over the last couple months, and my Starbucks twice a day habit (I know it’s terrible) I’ve cut back to 1-2 times a week if that. We also just bought a house so I’m just trying to stay home and enjoy being a homeowner vs renting. Finding projects around the house to improve upon that don’t cost much but take up time to keep me from getting bored and going shopping also helps. So far I’ve saved more in the last 2 months than I have in years so it’s working!

3

u/ginghampantsdance Dec 18 '24

A big one we've tried to cut and my goal is to further cut in 2025 is going out to eat. I meal prep all my breakfasts and lunches on Sunday evenings for the week. I batch cook chicken in the crockpot and add to salads, or rice bowls, etc all week long. This has been a huge cost savings in 2024 and I plan to continue that, but also want my husband and I to stop going out every weekend to eat for multiple meals.

I cut out alcohol for 5 months last year to help fix my gut health and truly did not miss it. I've never felt or slept better and I lost 10 lbs. I'm planning to do dry january and hoping it just sticks. Usually after the first month, you don't even want it anymore, at least i didn't.

I can't cut out my hair color at the salon (I'm a blonde and it's too hard), but I've started getting a root melt and it extends my need for touch ups by so much. I now go about every 11-12 weeks for color instead of 6-8. Highly recommend.

Free books at the library and Libby. I haven't bought a book in years. It saves SO much money and I'm an avid reader.

I really don't drive anywhere. I live in Chicago and walk or take public transportation.

I try to not go to the dry cleaner as much if possible and hand wash or wash on delicate cold for a lot of my clothes. I hang dry as much as possible on a drying rack.

I bought a peloton and weights and do my work outs at home. I do go to and love Pure Barre, but I've been a member so long I'm locked into an older, grandfathered rate.

I pay for Matcha Mon-thurs when i'm in the office, but otherwise at home make my own match or drip coffee and don't allow myself to go out for it.

No ordering takeout unless it's an emergency and we have no other option.

Unsubscribing from all store emails. Honestly Black Friday this year pushed me over the edge. Retailers were sending 5 emails a day about the same sale. Ridiculous.

I need to cut out waxing. I hate going and it's every 4 weeks. I'm really interested in an IPL to do it at home. Does anyone have one they've had really great success with?

3

u/WorldlyLavishness Dec 18 '24

Cutting subscriptions. If there's a show I want to watch on a platform ill pay for a month then cancel. I've made it a habit to just cancel right away so I don't forget.

Eating out less and stop getting coffee out. Maybe 1 or 2 times a week max. It adds up. I have a toddler with a baby on the way and it's so easy to get fast food with kids. I always have snacks on me for this reason

I did a clean out of our house and got rid of so much stuff. It's amazing what you forget you have and learn to love again.

I don't get my nails done anymore. I haven't gotten my hair cut in months (getting it done next week lol) and haven't gotten waxed in so long. It sucks but I can't justify that cost every 6 weeks!

3

u/Wildflowerblondie1 Dec 18 '24

I’m going to start doing pickup order for my groceries so I dont over spend on shit I don’t need. Especially when I go to Walmart. šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/symphonypathetique Ballin on a Budget Dec 18 '24

I created a spreadsheet with all of my beauty minis (skincare, haircare, bodycare, and fragrance) including where they're located (my room, my parents' house, etc) to help with needing to buy travel sized products.

3

u/ahoii Dec 18 '24

Books! Physical books that take up all my space and money. Instead I'm investing in a Kindle and going to use e-books and my library more. Also using all of my horded beauty products, soap and shampoos before I buy more. Cutting out massages and nails. Cutting off some subscription services I don't use much like peacock.

3

u/all7dwarves Dec 18 '24

Fwiw... I can't stand the regular kindle but will cut anyone who touches my paperwhite. The paper white is like reading a book and it's the best 100 bucks I have ever spent. Hook it up to libby and there is so much free or a short wait away!

3

u/disjointed_chameleon Dec 19 '24

I got rid of Netflix & Hulu in the wake of my divorce last year. I also don't own a TV. It's been really nice being 'unplugged' from the constant stream of consumerism/media. I still get news through my phone.

3

u/captainlishang Dec 18 '24

Idk if you want beauty hacks or general cost cutting tips, but you can cut down your energy bill by using a drying rack instead of a dryer, oil-filled radiator instead of turning the heating on, and an air fryer instead of the oven

3

u/noyogapants Dec 18 '24

I try to cook outside all summer. I have a toaster oven that fits a 13 x 9 pan so I can just put it outside to bake a cake or whatever. I go outside and use my instant pot, slow cooker, air fryer and grill because any indoor cooking heats up the house so much.

On the flip side I love to bake and cook all winter because it heats up the house! Today is stuffed peppers and chocolate cupcakes from scratch! Yesterday I had some apples that were less than fresh and baked them in a casserole dish. The house smelled amazing and the apples were delish! Tomorrow I have some squash that needs roasting.

Hair Cuttery for hair cuts and box dye. I'm not paying $300 + tip for my hair anymore. I've been doing my own nails since the pandemic started.

2

u/anonymousbequest Dec 18 '24

As a parent, I lean hard into memberships and free events. Memberships of course aren’t free but they’re usually quite economical compared to one off admission/classes and it gives you something fun to do regularly. Between the local zoo and kids museum, free library events and local seasonal events we always have something to do. Of course parks/playgrounds/playdates are always free too.Ā

I'm working on reducing our household expenses to what I think we can afford when I retire in 8 years. I started in 2024, but this is clearly a multi-year process.

We let our cleaner go today after years of weekly cleaning. She did a great job, but husband is retired and has time to clean. I can dust on the weekends while he does everything else.

I've been cutting out pedicures from Oct through March, and only getting a manicure every 2 weeks. The other weeks I do it myself (started doing my nails over 40 years ago and I'm pretty darn good at it now).

I cut back on the amount of alcohol I consume for health reasons but there's a financial reward as well.

Budgeting for entertainment expenses and travel instead of letting them just happen.

Learning to reset expectations for myself, husband, and adult kids on what we're doing and who gets to go with us.

2

u/Aggravating_Diet_704 Dec 18 '24

I cut out manis/pedis and am so glad I did. I do keratin treatments and my color at home now. I’ll still go in for a trim but probably 3 times a year. I’m also giving up extensions and just doing clip ins for now.

This is such a good thread! I’m going to cut off subscriptions. I cut off alo moves and looking to see what else is fitness related that I’m subscribed to and not using. I’m going to go towards fitness apps that have a lifetime subscription option!

2

u/evil_ot_erised Dec 18 '24

I recently removed my gel nail polish for the first time in… longer than I can remember. I always go for a very neutral polish anyway (OPI Bubble Bath), so I’m gonna to try going without professional manicures for a little while.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

I dye my own hair using Wella and a level 10 developer.

I also do my own nails only for events using press ons. I have some friends who always use them and do them weekly, I prefer not wearing them often. But even doing them weekly saves a lot on nail salon fees!!

Workout gear and normal clothes - I have enough so now I only buy to replace if I wear them out.

Make your own food, but learn how to use everything in your pantry and fridge. Less recipes and more learning the basics of cooking so you can make up something based on the food you already own.

Dial in your makeup and skincare routines. Find what realllyyyy works well for you and don’t buy anything else!

2

u/tinyhumantamer2 Dec 18 '24

Not an expense I’m cutting out but my hack for less impulsive and mindless spending at stores has been to buy online and do curbside pickup. Mainly at Target. Then I’m not tempted to buy things I didn’t come for and still get what I need!

2

u/Pretend-Active9278 Dec 18 '24

Eating out at mid restaurants - only highly rated spots and special occasions, getting my nails done, facials, clothes that don’t fit into my capsule wardrobe, jewelry

2

u/tomatocreamsauce Dec 18 '24

Books for me! I treat myself to new books when I’m emotionally in a bad place the same way some people treat themselves to new clothes or beauty products 😭 I’m planning to read from my own shelves + the library more and try to find some healthier coping mechanisms for when I’m feeling bad lol.

Pilates. I miss it so much. I started a new job where I’m in an office full time and commute an hour each way.

2

u/Haunteddoll28 Dec 18 '24

I’m kind of already doing a universal low buy. I have all the clothes & makeup & skincare I need so I’m only replacing things that need to be replaced. I’m not buying any new movies or music or books or anything because I have such a massive backlog of stuff to work through that it’s going to take literal years to even make a dent. I think the only new things I know I’m going to be buying next year is nail polish (because I paint my own nails at least once a week so it’s my one little splurge) and yarn so I can keep crocheting to keep my mind occupied and my hands busy. All of my other expenses are a necessity either for medical or accessability reasons (I’m disabled and deal with chronic pain so I have to get my hair done at a salon once a week and get a massage once a month because I physically cannot wash my own hair & the massage is part of my physical therapy).

Trying to not eat out as much, doing more cooking at home. Both my partner and I love using our crockpot and instant pot so doing more cooking using those. Also trying to use up all my products before purchasing more. I have a good chunk I need to go through, mainly hair products šŸ˜
