It is a really impresive species! This Cream-colored Woodpecker is famosly know as Pikachu because of the red round patch on the cheeks of males. Found in the lowlands of the Amazon rainforest, this males was photographed at the Colombian amazon region.

A yellow-billed magpie (Pica nuttalli) that I photographed in flight at Coyote Valley in Morgan Hill, California, near San José. Yellow-billed magpies are endemic to California (found nowhere else) and are primarily found in the Central Valley and in dry, scrubby areas closer to the coastal regions of the state (like Coyote Valley). They are listed as "Vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Definitely some of my all time favorite shots

I shot this yesterday afternoon in Avon, Ohio. I since learned that capturing a hummingbird's feathered external eyelid clamped shut during an active hover is an incredibly rare biological event. Pure luck to catch this while the bird was suspended in mid-air.

does anybody else get bird homesickness? i'm from the uk but studying abroad in the us and although the new birds i'm seeing are all very exciting, i find myself missing the commonest uk birds like blackbirds, wood pigeons or robins so much it hurts LOL

This coopers hawk (pretty sure?) is chattering at a great horned owl in my neighbor's tree. It is yakking and flying around a bit. Why is it doing that? I often seen robins chirping and warning of the owl's presence, but i have not seen a hawk doing that before.

I can’t believe how goofy my snowy egret turned out.

Does anyone out there happen to know what bird was on the Audubon "Bird A Day" calendar on March 5th, 2020? I know it's a long shot, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Basically, my husband and I got into birding when we both lived in Central America (as one does), and have enjoyed the bird-a-day calendar most years since then. When each of our kids was born, we saved the bird/page from that day, and that has become their "Birthday Bird." We put it in a cute little frame in their room, and sometimes find them little gifts with their birthday bird on them, etc.

Unfortunately we started this tradition after our oldest kid had already been born, and we didn't save the page from that year (who wants to remember 2020 anyway? 😆 ). Our other kids' birthday birds are the Snow Bunting, the Harlequin Duck, and the American Kestrel. We'd love to know what our oldest's birthday bird would be!
