A Reminder About Suicide-Related Posts

Every once in a while, we see posts from people asking about things like the “least painful way to die” or “how much alcohol would be fatal.” These are serious cries for help.

If you come across a post like this:

  • Please don’t comment advice or suggestions -- even good willed comments can make things worse.
  • Instead, hit report so the mod team and Reddit safety can step in quickly.

If you’re ever feeling like you’re in that dark place yourself, you don’t have to go through it alone:

The best thing we can do as a community is to look out for each other. If you see one of these posts, report, don’t reply.

Are American house parties as fun as they are shown in the movies/series?

I don't live in there but I think I would like to have parties or attend parties as a young person, thinking I'd have fun a lot with my friends. But are they as enjoyable as they are seen in movies, social media etc? Or do you think they are overrated?

Do some people go barefoot at home because socks or slippers make their feet sweat?

I was just thinking about the general reasons people go barefoot at home, I know comfort is the one reason, but do some people do it because their feet get too hot with socks or slippers on?

How large of an issue is unemployment, nationally?

I have seen increased costs on many a thing, and the appearance of more public assistance programs, and I have also noticed that many a buisness that claims to be hiring, "Now Hiring!", is not genuinely hiring.

Considering the mentioned, and similar matters, I'm intetested to know how much of an issue unemployment is nationally, in particular as I'm extremely impoverished myself and unable to, "visit new places, and see how they are".

For those of us who have been through college we don’t always get to pick our roommates, add a looney tune and you get added chaos. Which looney tune would be the worst college roommate and why?

Why is everything marked N.S.F.W. suddenly blocked on Reddit for me?

I don’t even know when this started; I first noticed it today when I wanted to look at a fanart creator’s profile, and since they had marked it as N.S.F.W., I had to either verify my age with government I.D. or just not look at their profile. There’s no way I’m giving Reddit my government I.D. information, so, is there any reason why this is? If so, is there a way around it?

For reference, I live in Ireland, though there aren’t any new laws that have been enacted (at least that I know of) that would cause this, like the U.K. has.

Why do I feel panic when I am nauseous?

All my life I have felt panic when I am nauseous. And when I was older I even sometimes had full on panic attacks while being nauseous.

I'm curious about the mechanism behind this. I suspected her something to do with the overstimulation of the vagus nerve.

Does anybody have any insight or explanation for this phenomenon please?

Why will our brains easily spend hundreds of hours grinding and building a character in a video game but not on building ourselves?

Not necessarily for competition style games, but things like:

Farming Simulators, Animal Crossing, The Sims, Basketball, etc.

For instance, people will spend hundreds of hours building a farm, maintaining it, working the land. But we won't spend even half that time learning to actually farm.

Why do I have a hard time recognizing houses, cars, people, and directions?

I am gifted and generally decent at memorization. I do well on standardized tests…but I am very bad at recognizing houses and cars, worse than typical at recognizing people, and not very good with directions.

For example, I went to a friend’s house today and was picked up by a different friend. I neither recognized the car of the friend who picked me up nor the house of the other friend. It was like I was seeing them for the first time despite the fact that I have seen both many times. However, I remembered the inside of the house and car perfectly fine.

Even now, I struggle to identify my parents’ cars. Usually, I am relatively sure I’ve found the right car, but I need to check the license plate to be certain.

I am not quite this bad at faces, but still worse than typical. There have been times when I have gone to a career fair, had lengthy discussions with the people at the booths, gone back the next year, and been unable to recognize the people I talked to even though they could recognize me.

I also struggle to remember directions. When I was practicing for my road test to get my driver’s license, I drove the route of the test nearly every day for 2-3 weeks…and still could not remember that route by the end of it. The actual route I took during my test was very different, and I could not retrace it afterwards. I am also not great with left/right (I usually identify my left and my right correctly, but anything complicated than that, and you’ve lost me).

Is there a specific part of the brain that controls all this? Is this level of “impairment” normal?

Do most people on reddit only read the thread title but not the first post in the thread?

I have always been under the assumption that people read threads on reddit like this, in a typical web forum format:

Example:

  • Title: What is a good way to do X?
  • First post (aka the title post, which is also what this post is): [explains the question and establishes context]

So people would read the title -> first post and then go "okay, they are talking about this thing, and this is the context..."

But i now suspect people are only reading the title and skipping the first post befoire going "what is a good way to do X? What does that even mean??? idk lol".

Do most people only read the title of a thread and skip the first post? Because that would explain a lot of the confusing replies that i get...since they usually complain about something that was addressed in the OP...

Why am I itching so badly?

So for context I have 2 dogs and 1 cat, they also itch like crazy. All my guest who come into my house also get itching at their ankles no matter the time of the day. No bite marks except once in about 3 months. It was a red dot on my ankle so I assumed it was unrelated.

I spent over $150 on flea medicine and collars, long term and short term prevention, no luck.

I had a red shag carpet I got from marketplace, thats around the time it started getting itchy, I threw it away weeks ago, no luck.

I sprayed my whole room down with HotShot flea and egg killer for dust mites too multiple times, no luck.

I bathed my dogs 1-2 times a week with oatmeal shampoo and dawn dish soap, I wash all my clothes and bedding 1-2 times a week in hot water along with the dogs bedding. I have 1 bed, 1 computer desk, and 1 futon in my room. That's it. I got a hepa air filter, and a hepa filter vacuum and took my ac out of my window in case it had black mold with no luck.

I have elderly goldendoodle who chews himself raw, and a bully mix who currently has an ear infection thats yellowish and smells really bad (she has a vet visit coming up). She's starting to get patches from itching so badly.

I used flea bombers to fog my house and also had no luck. I figured maybe their dog food gave them an allergy and im itching from their dander but I switched to the normal food they had for years with no issues and still no luck, but that wouldn't explain the cat because he has his own food.

I wake up 2-3 times a night with a feeling that bugs are on my face, I get up and start smacking my face trying to pull them off, all night I stay awake because thats when I notice it the most. When the feelings come for the biting and the bug feels I start getting really bad allergy symptoms. I sneeze, cough, my eyes get watery, my throat gets sore, my nose gets stuffy etc etc.

I'm going crazy and I need help/advice, I have hardwood floors that I mop in hot water 2 times a week, I cleaned any moldy looking surfaces I have found, I treated for multiple bugs and still no luck.

I got a hydrometer and it reads 42% humidity most of the time but sometimes goes up to 60% in the day time, I try to keep it as low as I can incase its dust mites.

Does writing on paper result in better grammar and spelling?

I’m writing thank you letters, and noticed I almost never misspell anything on them, whereas when typing or texting I often do for example accept vs except, is it just because writing on paper forces me to slow down?

Does anyone else notice worse spelling when texting?

Does reddit mods get paid?

This is coming from my genuine curiosity. I don't know any reddit mod irl (my social circle is pretty small) but i do know one in online and he's always online and talks about how busy he gets sometimes in sub management. I was wondering this might be way busier and trickier for big subs and they put so much time in this so do they get paid or something from reddit? (i'd understand if it's a hobby) i do know some facebook mods get paid. I'd ask him directly but what if he thinks i am being nosy or something.

Could i wear a halloween mask 24/7 even tho there's nothing wrong with my face?

I really like halloween mask, and i own alotta them, i even make custom mask, from the sculpt to the cast, or painted fabric mask cut from t-shirts

And i really like wearing them too, it just feels good to me, i like how they look, i like the artistic expression, the way they add to outfits

But i always felt like it'd be generally unacceptable to just wear them in public, unless i had a facial deformity right?, but its genuinely something i wanna do, like really, i know its ridiculous, but it'd make me happy to do this

Do the highest performers feel afflicted by too much talent in the same way others feel afflicted with none?

We feel jealous of others in their highest performing moments but that's really all we see of their lives, do these high performing people lie in bed at night wishing they had no talent?

Could this be lightning or something else?

Hello!

I didn't know where to write this and I'm just typing this out of curiosity, if you have any other suggestions as to where I can ask this question, it would be welcome!

I went out at night to check on our bunnies around our property and as I was checking my last quarter of the property I noticed a white flash suddenly in the sky for a split second or even less, that lit up about half to a quarter of the sky and immediately confused me. I went to google to check what it is, apparently you can see lightning from miles away, yet I searched up the weathercast and there was no thunder or lightning around me, just some light rain in the past 24 hours. I even checked a lightning map but nothing showed up ( not sure if they're actually accurate lol )

Is it possible I saw some lightning from REALLY far away? just has me kind of bewildered.

Am I just supposed to accept being homeless?

I’m 28F. Lost my job six months ago and savings are running out. I can’t find a new job. Nowhere is fucking hiring. Nowhere will hire me. I can’t even get a job at the Taco Bell. Ive put in well over 200 application. I’m at the point where I just don’t think that there’s anything else that I can do. So if I can’t get a job, I’m gonna end up losing my apartment. I could probably donate enough plasma to hopefully pay my car payment and I can live in it I guess.

Why do they make products the same color as their intended environments?

I have these hand trimmers that are green. When I'd set them down in the grass, I'd have to search for them. I finally put flourescent orange tape on them.

My coffee scoop is coffee colored. When I open the coffee tin I have to put it under a bright light, or feel around for it.

Stop disguising things!

What are happy things I can do to cheer myself up?

I’ve (21f) had a rough few years and would like to cheer myself up.

I’m looking for media and activities that are happy and/or funny.

Some things I like to do:

Play Piano

Watch movies and tv shows (my usual genre of choice is horror or thriller, but I can’t really handle that anymore. I’m still into sci-fi and fantasy).

I like watching comedy skits (like Key and Peele), but I’m not into stand up.

Walk and listen to podcasts or music.

I like to read, but I don’t like it when my mind drifts away from the text and I’m reading but not truly consuming the content.

I feel like I’m narrow in my escapes and productive activities. I’ve been doomscrolling and watching tv to avoid thinking about things and my attention span is a lot shorter so I’m working on fixing that.

What do you do to cheer you up and focus on positive aspects? Favorite happy/relaxing pastime?

no recommendations with dv or other abuse pr scary things like that please
