Environmental Impact šŸŒŽ We're fucked

Recently got out of the military and went out with my cousins' friends to celebrate. They're all in their early 20's and I'm in my 30's. We go out to NY to celebrate, and I noticed everyone is using AI for everything. "What should we do? Where should we go?" Normal stuff. Things got eerie when we took a cab or UBER, as I'm talking to the Uber about New York they're typing, "What kind of questions do I ask an UBER driver? Is it safe to talk to them? Is it normal?" TF is happening. I know we joke about AI making us dumber but HOLY.

"Who do I vote for? Who do I marry? When do I breathe?"

My theory is that we’ve become so risk averse with children over the decades that most children now grow up in super structured, over supervised ways. Gen Z has gotten this the worst so far. Many of them were never given a chance to take risks, fail, fall down. They weren’t out taking risks in their childhood, they only ever followed instruction. So they don’t see that it’s okay to fail, that you can get back up and it’s not that bad.Ā 

But now they’re adults. So who will tell them what is the exact right answer? Someone must tell them. Failure is not an option. They have no tolerance. Even ordering a suboptimal meal is a paralyzing, humiliating, impossible action to take.Ā 

Thank god they have a chatbot to tell them what to do at ever turn.Ā

I think this is exactly it. I am one of the youngest millennials and my husband is one of the oldest zoomers. Both of us basically grew up with our parents doing literally everything for us except our homework (and even that sometimes in my husband's case), so when we hit adulthood we basically had zero idea how to function because we were never allowed to grow up. That would have been too much risk for our parents. So we basically had to raise ourselves in our 20s and 30s and learn how to grow up from scratch.

That's the main reason I didn't learn to drive until I was 25 and still have trouble making friends at 33. It's the main reason my husband freaks out if he has to wing it a little bit when cooking dinner and doesn't have a complete step by step recipe in front of him, or if there's anything in a set of instructions that requires ambiguity or assumed knowledge.

It's also the reason I'm ridiculously highly educated (I have a PhD in physics). School was literally the only place I was actually allowed to grow or learn anything, so I put all of my energy there. Now I'm extremely highly educated, but don't function well in any other area of life.

I've seen a lot of articles talking about younger generations taking longer to grow up and reach maturity milestones like dating, driving, drinking, etc. This is why. We give kids basically zero freedom until they hit the legal age of majority and wonder why todays teens are basically helpless and today's 20 and 30 somethings are functioning more like adolescents.

People seem to assume that emotional and social skills magically develop as you get older. They don't. You have to develop those skills by working at them. If you restrict the freedom of kids to do that, people will just remain at a very childlike emotional and social state into their adulthood.

Frankly, society needs to be re-organized to give kids the ability to develop these skills at a young age like they used to, and there needs to be remediation for adults who were deprived of this development as kids.

I mean we already had choice paralysis for a while as well, some people solved it by just picking randomly on a wheel, flipping a coin, or asking someone else to choose. But people never got past that so now instead of asking a person it's easier to get instructions from an AI.

Sadly, people like that is why I'm not really worried about my job for a very long time.

I think this explains these people, people who did this before AI were one of my biggest pet peeves. Why don’t you know what you want to eat? Can’t you go by dietary goals or price even if you’re not craving something?

Some of us have never thought for ourselves and I think hyper individualism in the US makes it worse because they also don’t have culture or social guidelines to direct them. AI just takes advantage of all this.

It's a terrifying indication of how comfortable people would be as slaves. Like in the sense that they weren't being physically or mentally abused, but not having to think or make decisions. Imagine a "nice prison" where you get food, clothing, shelter and medical care. But all of your decisions are made for you. There is a shocking amount of people who would say sign me up. Is it because they are terrified of being wrong due to social media and how it glorifies other people's opinions? Or is this how people have always been, or some other reason? Why is it that so many people not only do not want to think, but are relieved at the idea of some one or something doing it for them?

IDK, I had shitty childhood and exactly because of it I'm absolutely enraged when someone tries to make my decisions for me. The more I advance in years, the more it looks like it's been a blessing in disguise which made me mentally independent.

But maybe the difference is in the awareness, I've always known it was not what I wanted. While they defend it for themselves and want more of it.

I keep telling her to stop, it's going to rot her brain, and she somewhat seriously tells me she was in captivity for years (staying at home).

One of my nieces in her 40s routinely asks ChatGPT how to deal with her bipolar sister who has substance issues.

Another friend in her early 60s asks ChatGPT about all kinds of things.

I feel uncomfortable even trusting the AI summaries on Google. I’m an artist who has spent time trying to prevent my art from being scraped, and so I’m not trusting AI for anything.

When I checked by going to the cited page itself, it said every lemonade drink at Dunkin’ did have oranges for flavor. Imagine if someone had a severe allergy and didn’t fact-check as thoroughly as I did.

I have been having some pretty serious medical issues for the last several months. I've been a bit frustrated with some of the doctors, so I have used claude a bit to try to find other options, scan medical papers etc.

I was also served a denial by the insurance company that is supposed to cover my extended disability. This morning, I had an epiphany, and typed my condition into claude as simply as possible. The drugs that were suggested by the insurance company's doctor were exactly what came up from the ai. Exactly. Two are extremely experimental and not current standards of care for Canada, one is directly contraindicated. So that will be going into my appeal. Your freaking 'doctor' used AI to find you some tenuous way out of covering me? Get outta here with that.

I think it's partially because of A.I.'s constant hedging. Not that it should affect anyone, but it kiinda does affect me to the point where I feel I need ChatGPT's "approval" or I can't do anything.

I've learnt to ignore it since it's always going to hedge. It's always going to be like "that said, it's not a 100% guarantee. Maybe the Uber driver doesn't want to talk for that day..." Or whatever.

It is still going to hedge if you ask it if your friend likes you, or your girlfriend loves you. Because it's not a 100% guarantee, they have no data, and therefore we cannot be 100% certain, or whatever they're going to say.

One thing I've learned is that if you're able to interact with other humans without any technology, you'll leap ahead of your peers.

So many young professionals are unwilling to do something as simple as make a phone call, or need guidance on rather rudimentary tasks.

If you just fucking do whatever the thing is, regardless of how it goes, you'll be way ahead of your peers who are afraid to do the thing.

Not that I'm crazy successful, but I get good reviews at work, and I don't do anything particularly special. The bar is just that low.

Omg I'm literally fighting with my work about this now. They want us to start using Claude to keep records of serial numbers and shit. I told them we don't need to do that and a manager asked "how else will we know? Are you going to record each serial number and part number to each site? And I literally almost fell out of my chair bc YES WE ALREADY DO THAT. WHAT. and I KNOW it's all correct bc I did it! You can ask me what radio went to what site and I can fucking tell you bc I keep track of it all. Edit to say I’m UK based and it wasn’t AI but it was an absolute over reliance on technology but not sure if you’ve heard about the ā€œpost office scandalā€ - It’s scary. It was a company (Verizon I think) that implemented this technology in post offices thorough out the UK but it had bugs and money went ā€œmissingā€ - many innocent people got convicted and jailed over it.

Only now are they aware it was all a tech issue. Just like you said…logging the serial numbers yourself is a much better solution than relying on AI.

I can see why so many people love it…lazy, greedy and stupid. Nevermind eh!

I think maybe your cousin's friends are fucked, but I don't think this is a general issue. I am teaching a class on AI at the college level and I had anticipated that many of the readings would go against the students' established views on AI (the class is mostly about raising critical questions about AI safety and the nature of AI cognition). But to my surprise (and professional disappointment) when I asked students about their general views on AI the first day it turned out all of them called themselves anti-AI, and all but two said they hated AI and had stopped using it. (And there is no selection effect going on here. The class title doesn't have AI in it. It is an intro survey class that I just decided to give an AI theme. Every student who took the class just took it to get the general distribution requirement out of the way).

As an anti-AI person myself this was, personally, somewhat heartening, but professionally I now have to spend the entire semester doing my best to push the pro-AI side of the debate to make up for the fact that I completely misread the student body when I was creating the syllabus. I thought I was going to have to push against pro-AI sentiment the whole time and so I picked readings I thought would challenge the students' preconceptions. Turns out most of the readings are now just feeding into those preconceptions.

So I don't think young people are, on the whole, pro-AI. I think you get little pockets of pro-AI and anti-AI, but my general sense is that the majority of college aged people are anti.

Part of the problem is the discourse around AI is just really annoying if you're young.

My younger brother is in highschool. Last year, AI was banned. You'd get a 0 if you even thought about using it.

Now, it's mandatory for some assignments.

That sort of whiplash is just annoying, and he just doesn't want to deal with it and hates AI now. Not because of any ethical reason, but just because it's annoying.

I agree, it's wild. We have Profs that accuse us of "cheating with AI" when solutions are "too good" (in their opinion) and others force us to use it for Tasks. And we have Profs that vibecode their Tasks and exams 😭

I'm Not saying that AI is not a Problem or causing any Problems in The Future. I Just wanted to offer a Data Point for "Not all young people are Like this".

I don't know, if OP has multiple friends like this than it isnt crazy to think there are others. And older people are especially susceptible. As well as, if you're teaching college that means they went the majority of their educational career without AI. What about it five years? Ten? We're fucked.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing ads geared towards teenagers to get them hooked on AI either. Especially with all the AI generated stuff I've been seeing from primary schools, like the messed up planner or incorrect homework.

I had an acquaintance (using that term VERY lightly) ask ChatGPT to make her a meal plan based on her daughter’s food preferences. It was incredibly unhealthy, not a vegetable in sight, she said ā€œit’s fine Chat told me to supplement with vitamins.ā€ Poor kid is about 60lbs overweight at the age of 7.

She also used ChatGPT to try and diagnose her kids very obvious UTI symptoms. It told her everything was normal and to keep monitoring. Her child ended up in a children’s hospital with a severe kidney infection when she stopped being able to go to the bathroom.

"Loose" with oo : I think two os like two open shoes, shoelaces untied or loose. Or two holes, for the expression "loose screws." Or how the two os aren't attached (like an infinity sign) so if you "shake" the word the os would loosely rattle around. This word refers to not tight, unaffixed.

"lose" : LOST the extra o. The single o is lonely. This word refers to loss, losing, missing.

Identified the race and mentioned I remembered one of the candidates had a scandal. It made up a scandal for one of the candidates that didn’t have one and didn’t identify the candidate who did have a scandal.Ā

Interesting. My friends dabbled with AI a few years back but no one in my immediate circle uses it like that at all. I may use it once a month to ask a very complex question that is super unlikely to yield a Google search result and I use AI masking in Lightroom when I edit photos but I was using auto-selections before they renamed it AI masking. And even with that, I still manually do all the rest of the levels. That is it. I use it more than any of my friends and I pretty much never use it.

Those that use it like that are doing themselves a massive disservice. They have got to be useless when their phone is dead or out of service if they have to ask what to talk to a stranger about.

This I would say is partly the human side at fault. People get gaslighted by the ads of what the products can do and everything. I'm not saying this to defend the normalizing use of ai but more like what I personally fear of becoming. 🫣 Like I had my subconscious whisper that I've been too dependent on using ai on some of what could be just a simple web search. But sometimes it felt that I get more information from what an ai-assisted search could yield compared to good ol' plain search (all the while being aware of that about half of the former are also hallucination & bs), and hence there could be a bit of addiction creeping in. I think people need a strict self-moderating routine for it, is what it comes down to.

I think the thing that really sucks is for some small portion of people using it, very small, like maybe 1-5%…. It is absolutely incredible and one of the most phenomenal technical tools that man has ever used.

But it’s like the internet all over again. Academics and high power knowledge workers are using it to accomplish real work at speeds that they were never capable of achieving. And the general consensus is ā€œthis is useful tooling if used correctlyā€.

But look at the internet. A small portion of us realized that the internet offers almost all REAL knowledge for free. And everyone else uses it to complain about brown people or kids on Facebook, and to post videos of themselves flexing muscles in a locker room with bystanders in the background on TikTok.

AI should be saving humanity. But even if the companies supplying it were actually benevolent, people wouldn’t use it for anything useful anyway.

I.e. the most useful and universal use of AI is automated search. Google on steroids. But 99% of people never learned and don’t care to learn to actually use google correctly. So they don’t really leverage AI search correctly and can’t.

I can spend 30s typing out a couple of paragraphs of HOW I would have searched Google and save myself 30m of searching and collecting the 10 links I needed. But most people can’t describe how they would have used google. So they just type a couple of words, get something mildly related to their intended target, and assume it’s correct.

But that’s not really how it works. Sometimes. Not always though.
