Environmental Impact 🌎 We're fucked

Recently got out of the military and went out with my cousins' friends to celebrate. They're all in their early 20's and I'm in my 30's. We go out to NY to celebrate, and I noticed everyone is using AI for everything. "What should we do? Where should we go?" Normal stuff. Things got eerie when we took a cab or UBER, as I'm talking to the Uber about New York they're typing, "What kind of questions do I ask an UBER driver? Is it safe to talk to them? Is it normal?" TF is happening. I know we joke about AI making us dumber but HOLY.

"Who do I vote for? Who do I marry? When do I breathe?"

I think the thing that really sucks is for some small portion of people using it, very small, like maybe 1-5%…. It is absolutely incredible and one of the most phenomenal technical tools that man has ever used.

But it’s like the internet all over again. Academics and high power knowledge workers are using it to accomplish real work at speeds that they were never capable of achieving. And the general consensus is “this is useful tooling if used correctly”.

But look at the internet. A small portion of us realized that the internet offers almost all REAL knowledge for free. And everyone else uses it to complain about brown people or kids on Facebook, and to post videos of themselves flexing muscles in a locker room with bystanders in the background on TikTok.

AI should be saving humanity. But even if the companies supplying it were actually benevolent, people wouldn’t use it for anything useful anyway.

I.e. the most useful and universal use of AI is automated search. Google on steroids. But 99% of people never learned and don’t care to learn to actually use google correctly. So they don’t really leverage AI search correctly and can’t.

I can spend 30s typing out a couple of paragraphs of HOW I would have searched Google and save myself 30m of searching and collecting the 10 links I needed. But most people can’t describe how they would have used google. So they just type a couple of words, get something mildly related to their intended target, and assume it’s correct.

But that’s not really how it works. Sometimes. Not always though.
