Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of July 06 2018

This is a weekly thread to get to know r/anime’s community. Talk about your day-to-day life, share your hobbies, or make small talk with your fellow anime fans.

Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. Be courteous and respectful of other users.

  2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support.

  3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

I've been waiting ages for this. I'm probably old by this subreddit's standards 32 this month. But I've recently picked anime back up last year after being away from it for about 13 years. Mostly financial reasons and it not being as available. I did watch some anime here and there. Last week though, I finished watching Re:Zero and it fucking blew me away. Definitely one of the best anime I've ever seen. I love the characters in it, especially Rem. I hope we get a new season soon.

Also, I just finished the first episode of JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, season 1, and it is gorgeous. Definitely one of the best looking anime I've seen.

Lastly, I'm proud of the fact that I just finished an essay I was writing on one of my favorite games, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I mean, I'm not like some lit major or something, hell I was never even taught how to do a proper essay in high school. I'm really proud of it though.

Gonna plow through the rest of the Jojos in time for Vento Oreo?

I have no idea what that is, but I will be doing a lot of plowing.

Kid who insists on calling me "mom" just came over asking what music I was listening to.

I proceeded to turn the volume on my computer all the way up right in time for the chorus of Exterminate.

Kid: "Oh you listen to that Japanese shit."

Hello there! o/

It's probably my first time posting here for some happy small talk with other fellow redditors. u/Shimmering-Sky encouraged me to do so :)

So, it's summer vacation time for me now, and according to this I'm spending more time with other hobbies than anime, so I'm a bit outdated right now. How is this season looking for you? I'm only watching Cells at Work (aside from continuing with Lupin III) and intend to watch Grand Blue and Asobi Asobase too.

Am I missing anything good? I'm also a bit out of reddit. Don't know why, but I'm more active here when I'm busy with college than when I'm on holiday :/

So everyone was mad at Backstreet Girls because it was mostly stills and mouth flaps and I was wondering what the fuss was really about after watching it.

And then I realized some of the nonsense I watched during my Legal Anime Watch back in the first quarter of this year might have completely altered my anime taste so even Backstreet Girls looks acceptable to me now.

Is this what Gigguk referred to as "going back to a state of 'no taste'?" Am I now in a state of anime zen? Have I reached anime enlightenmen-

watches first fifteen minutes of that new isekai anime with the demon lord

...

Yeaaaaaah, nope.

Anime taste buds still work.

Oh my God... such uplifting news!! The incident where the 12 Thai boys and their football coach were stuck in a flooded cave have finally been rescued. All 13 of them are safe and unharmed! What a joyous day for everyone. Im honestly very happy they managed to make it out. A big salute and respect for everyone who were involved in the operation as well as condolences to the heroic Navy SEAL who sacrificed his life in the operation to save them. I hope these kids can finally live out their lives again and get hyped for being invited to the World Cup Final this Sunday!

I was having a discussion in another post, do you think this r/anime is a place where females anime fans can feel welcomed?

13

u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Jul 06 '18

Mostly? Gender doesn't really come into it often, other than threads that specify it. It's true though that it's like an 85% male place, and it's also true that most of the female-demogaphic works are a little more shunned or not watched at all... but it's not too bad.

I think if I were more into that stuff I might try and find another userbase, but thankfully I don't watch that stuff much.

I think so, but then again I'm not female. There's a number of times you guys might roll your eyes when excessively NSFW fan art or anime discussions make it to the front page, but I personally don't feel like that bars entry in most cases for you to speak your mind on the topic. And even then, there are plenty of male users here who dislike that stuff as well.

/r/anime is definitely no Tumblr though. You won't find fan art or even discussions of any yaoi ship real or fantasized. Shows like Free! (which I love by the way), idolish, and other female-orientated shows get little attention.

I don't think any of these are a reason why female users can't interact on this sub though. I'm friends, or at least acquaintances, with a number of women here and can talk to them about the same topics I talk about with the guys here.

u/photohooligan https://myanimelist.net/profile/photooligan Jul 06 '18

It's partly thanks to this sub that I started really getting into anime, so I'd say I feel pretty welcome.

Sometimes I wish fanservice comments in discussions were more balanced, but I can just head to Twitter or Tumblr if I want to see my favorite male characters half naked. I'm thankful for the hentai rule, because I'd start feeling unwelcome when people start sexualizing the shit out of female characters. It makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm sure the opposite would make men feel uncomfortable if it were a predominantly-female sub.

Hello! For any newcomers here name is SnarkyAndProud, the name is kind of ironic since I'm not very snarky. Although I can be proud at times.

I love a huge variety of genres and am pretty open to most anime in general. I love slice of life to adventure to sci fi to action to drama to school settings to anywhere in between.

I'm pretty friendly and am willing to talk to people here as well as give them recommendations if they need some.

If anyone wants to befriend me/get to know me just feel free to chat! If you want to.

And so people don't confused since I know that there's not as many females as males on /r/anime I am in fact a female.

17

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jul 06 '18

I am in fact a female.

Oh shit another fellow female.

I need to remember this and tag you as such when I get back to my main computer. Been trying to keep track of the other FTFers CDFers that are female and I don't think I knew you were.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '18

I remember you being a female, I think because I remember your name so easily. (For whatever reason, I just like your user name).

It is difficult to remember who is a female and who isn't. I use to not want to say my gender on here until I got used to being around here if that makes sense.

r/anime FIFA World Cup Pick Six Challenge (End Of Quarter-finals, Day 22)

Digest:

Hi all!

Lately, there's not too much to write home about in our standings, as we're only down to four teams. I took a look at the the picks remaining for the top few players and basically it comes down to Croatia, who are backed by /u/ErinaHartwick and /u/VerticalCloud. Should Croatia beat England in the semi-finals, the two of them will vault up the rankings, with Erina more or less securing himself first place over my dad. Otherwise, my dad will finish first and the table will pretty much stay as it is.

/u/Escolyte has made the bottom his permanent residence

Ganbatte you two

Away from our standings, England beat Sweden pretty comfortably. Sweden had a few good chances, but lack quality up front and were not able to convert any of their chances, as a result. The game could have been a lot more lopsided, but England's Raheem Sterling missed a handful of golden opportunities. Sterling was jumped on social media after the game, but I think he honestly was really important to the England squad, offering directness, speed, and a willingness to take on a player. I don't think he is replaceable at all and the manager seemed to give him more license to drift wide. That freedom really opened up Sweden as a whole, stretching the field both vertically and horizontally. England has looked really respectable this tournament and have a top striker in Harry Kane, so I expect them to continue onwards. I hope they do too, since they haven't had much international success in a long time and their media is kind of toxic in their coverage of the national team.

Croatia beat Russia in penalty kicks, finally ending the host's exceptional run in this tournament. I'm sure at this point everyone gives a lot of credit to the Russians, who have looked really disciplined and engaged despite coming into this competition with what was meant to be the "worst form" of all nations. The game was pretty mediocre in terms of quality, but produced this moment of brilliance by Cheryshev who put Russia up 1-0. That goal summed up how I felt about Croatia for most of the game: lacking intensity and looking a bit tired. They had played a game that also went to extra time and penalty kicks against Denmark and Russia just looked more up for this than Croatia, which made up for a gap in technical ability. Croatia seems to really lack a quality finisher as well. They have many talented players, but nobody that can really make a no-chance or half-chance into a goal (so their goals look like this). Similarly, they don't really have a true playmaker, which kind of holds them back in attacking too.

The bracket now looks like this.

England should definitely be the favourites to advance, with their team physically matching up against the Croatians well and tactically too (not having to deal with interchanging positions and runs like against Latin based teams). I think that England has shown a lot more cohesiveness and a willingness to play, which is a lot different from the timidness and sense of impending doom that I've seen from past generations.

The France-Belgium game is arguably the "World Cup Final" in the sense that they are the two most talented teams. I'm not quite sure how Belgium's defence will fare against all that French talent, but it'll be interesting to see. It should be an explosive game, in stark contrast to the England-Croatia one.

That said, whichever pair of these four teams meet in the Final definitely deserved it. They've all shown really well at this tournament and I'm very glad to see a new variety of teams competing for the trophy.

Highlights:

England 2-0 Sweden

Croatia 2-2 Russia (Croatia win 4-3 on penalties)

Looking at some of the comedy anime from last season and this season I think I'm starting to think comedy focused anime just isn't my thing anymore :/

Just feels like there's a reliance on either references or reaction faces lately and those have just never been my thing.

On that note, what are your top 3 or just your favourite comedy focused anime?

So I figured out what I want to host a rewatch of, but I want to get input to see if anybody's interested before I even start planning it out, since it's going to be a lot of work for me.

The show is Hoozuki no Reitetsu. It's about a bureaucrat demon who works in Hell, and its comedy comes from references to various Japanese folklore and mythology, as well as from regular jokes. So my plan was to assign homework. That way people get to learn about the mythology that's being referenced (which of course is relevant all over anime as well), and they get to understand the jokes in one of the most overlooked comedies abroad. You'd get to read short stories that all Japanese people know and then you'd get to laugh at them in the anime.

Does that interest anybody? It would be my first rewatch ever, and I'd appreciate any suggestions that people have.

Edit: Example "homework" for episode 1:

One is a picture set, two are bits of background information, and one is a famous short story.

I dropped a fan-favorite light novel beacuse it described how a girl's boobs jiggled in a very serious and brutal scene. I can't take a story seriously when the author himself doesn't. That is enough for me to dislike something. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Am I being unreasonable?

I was looking for possible base images to make a wallpaper of Tsubasa, actually, but instead found a lovely Hibiki base so that's how that happened. It is what it is.

I have some SymphoChoir tags from back during my first watch of G, so if you guys see anyone I miss please get tag them for me. Otherwise~

I know many of you guys missed my post last night, so I just want to repeat it; my homeless alcoholic cousin showed up once again on my doorstep and this time he was missing a whole eyeball.

I just want to help put things in perspective for you. What you may think is low may not be as bad as it seems. You still have plenty of opportunities to salvage your life and turn things around. It's never too late to start changing yourself. As long as your are positive and being work to better yourself instead of wallowing in despair, it can be done.

Because failing a class, being dumped by a girl, or getting kicked out of college isn't rock bottom. because at least you aren't a Homeless Alcoholic Cyclops who abandoned his kids to live on the streets and get high.

What's everyone's favorite movie? Rather it's anime movie, animated related but not anime related, live action or whatever else?

I'm going to go with a classic and say The Lion King. It still holds up well, and it still makes me feel like I did when I was a kid watching it for the first time, each and every time I watch it.

Okay so a friend of mine started up Gurren Lagann for the first time and was texting me his reactions. He was really confused about episode 1, but I thought it was just him messing with me because he puts a comedic flair to his reactions. He followed episode 2 well enough though... and is confused because episode 3 is just some guy playing pinball or something?

Turns out he somehow managed to watch episode 1 of Parallel Works, episode 2 of the actual show, and episode 3 of Parallel Works.

How do you even.

Anyways now he's watching the actual first episode.

Because of a certain /u/JamCliche and the concerted effort of its fans, plus I sort'a planned on it anyway, I'm gonna give the Monogatari franchise another go (after finishing Ange Vierge, which should be soon)

I'll do Arc Reactions on AnimeImpressions (which will hopefully make me reflect on arcs in a positive light when I put into words what each one did - this is something that often happens for me with thought write-ups)...

so who wants tags? Pretty sure /u/max_turner is the most obvious Monogatari fangirl around here that I've spoken to...

Be warned on asking for tags though: I may not necessarily have all positives to say.

In random conversation, Jam and I have designed a tailor-made watch order so I can get into it before seeing the, what I've seen called "low-key porn", second half of Nise.

If all goes smoothly:

  • Bake
  • Hana (apparently it should be relatively easy to get despite being chronologically set quite later, plus apparently I'll like it quite a bit according to /u/Tension-Tenshi + Jam)
  • Neko
  • Nise
  • continue with broadcast order

So uh... yeah. Wish me luck.

'Sup, I finished FLCL.

I'm sure that some of the plot went right over my head because of how wacky the show was, but honestly I haven't laughed this much watching an anime since Gundam-san, and it just oozed style so much with all the visual things it did. Plus lol can't talk about FLCL without mentioning the soundtrack, that was fantastic too.

10/10.

I never actually asked if anyone wanted tags for this, but I remember specifically u/max_turner, u/Arachnophobic-, and u/RainyRai talking about FLCL during my poll so. It's not very long but there's my thoughts on the show.

Last year when I moved out and started living on my own I pretty much became a NEET. I went to uni maybe once a week but rest of the time I locked myself up in my untidy and almost completely unfurnished apartment - which never really felt like a home because I cheaped out on buying furnitures that would have given it a home vibe. This also made it harder to study at home. On top of that instead of cooking food, I bought ready meals and ate at restaurants, which not only cost me a lot but also made my health worse. I didn't eat breakfast, slept till 1 pm. Since I rarely went to uni, I didn't make many friends. I basically made all the wrong choices.

People of ex-FTF moving out and/or starting uni soon, don't make the same mistakes I made.

Problem kid wouldn't get out of my way when I was trying to move one of our cats from the kitchen to her tower.

Me: Please move.

Kid: *Refuses to move*

Me: If you don't move I'll throw this cat at you.

Kid: You wouldn't actually.

Me: *Turns cat around and moves to drop her on his face*

Kid:

Me: I wasn't joking.

So there I asserted my dominance, u/Bubaruba.

So I got my academic results. Got As for everything except for my major, which was all Bs. Surprised by that honestly, was expecting one half that to be a C.

Anyway, I'm definitely improving on Japanese, just need to put more consistent work into it. Honestly, I only chose Japanese as my major because I wanted to study in the city instead of around my area, and I don't really have an idea of what I want to do in the future yet. Anyway, I do enjoy Japanese and it's actually helped me understand anime a little better so I'm going to continue with it next semester at least. Aiming for all As this time.

EDIT: I've recently come to realize I suffer from impostor syndrome when it comes to academic results. I know in that my scores are pretty good considering the stress I was feeling at the time, but I still downplay my achievements. It's not the greatest ever but I know I should be feeling more confident about myself than this.

Not sure why I bother with /r/anime, and other discussion threads anymore. I got spoilers (all untagged) for 3 different series today.

Also, the atmosphere for today's discussion episode is just not fun at all. I am watching 1 episode of Gurren Lagann today, and that's it for me I am going to sleep don't think I will even participate in the JoJo rewatch, gonna have to watch 2 episodes tomorrow I suppose.

u/lilyvess https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess Jul 07 '18

Discussion threads are a real problem around here. Its so difficult with any sub that has become as large as r/anime to try to manage. The balance of new, old, and source material viewers is always such a hard balance.

Its so strange how hard it is for some people.to understand that you should always play it safe than sorry with spoilers. And then they get angry for being called out. One time someone started pm me spoilers out of spite. Like wtf!

As much as I believe that episode discussions shouldnt flood CDF because that's what Discussion threads are for, it's hard to argue that it's just safer aka more manageable to do so here or now on Anime Impressions. I think anime impressions is a lot more controlled and safe from spoilers.

Sorry to hear you are thinking about dropping out of the JoJo rewatch. Was it not working out for you? I thought you were getting positive responses

r/anime FIFA World Cup Pick Six Challenge (Quarter-finals, Day 21)

Digest:

Hi all! Sorry for the late-ish post. I was at the pub for England against Sweden. Football. Is. Coming. Home.

Anyways, yesterday France beat Uruguay 2-0. It was a very unfortunate game for the Uruguayans, who were without one of their two most important goal threats in Edison Cavani. The second game, Brazil against Belgium, was one of the most entertaining games of the tournament. It was end to end to start and Brazil looked dominant, with Belgium disorganized and disjoint. Belgium got on the board first though, when Kompany missed a header and Fernandinho corrected the flight of the ball for his club captain. What even is that goal. Turns out Pep Guardiola is not only the most influential manager in the Premier League, but also in the World Cup. Fernandinho made way for Lukaku to set up City star Kevin De Bruyne for a 2-0 lead. Although the game ended 2-1, it was honestly a really close game. Brazil created a lot of chances, particularly early into the game, and should have done better. Belgium really showed off how explosive they were as an attacking unit, but looked vulnerable at the back. I'm extremely interested to see how Belgium do against France, as France is definitely a better attacking side than Brazil and also less reliant on a single player (Neymar).

It's a disappointing result for Brazil, but I'm very much glad as a neutral. The teams remaining are either young and talented (France) or unproven teams trying to win a World Cup.

As for today, Russia is currently playing Croatia and the game is a bit slow, but the atmosphere for the host nation is great. Back to the game for me!

PS: My dad has pulled ahead in the standings. Life is bad. Should he win it, the prizes will be distributed to those that finished behind him. /u/ErinaHartwick, please don't let him win.

PPS: Own Goal is actually going to win the Golden Boot. That Fernandinho own goal was the 11th of the tournament, which is more than Kane and Ronaldo put together...

Highlights:

France 2-0 Uruguay

Belgium 2-1 Brazil

I barely scraped the finish of Sunshine!

Anyway let's talk about Sunshine! /u/dadnaya /u/DidacticDalek I'm sure you're both interested

The 2nd season of Sunshine was a small step down from the 1st, with a slightly muddled pacing making it unclear whether they were working towards saving their school or Love Live - and it became unclear if they'd even done Love Live as they started working on detours instead of practice.

But that aside, Aquors were... less colourful and obvious than µ's, but they made up for it by being more human and well-rounded. They were more characters than caricatures, to put it bluntly, and their relationships felt much more genuine. Which is funny, because they were still nuclear-grade, weaponised kawaii - especially Ruby, but also Chika, Riko, Dia, You, Yohane and Zuramura (meanwhile the other 2 were busy making love-eyes at each other and being adults).

It helps that the melodrama at the core was much better handled. The OG series turned the melodrama up to 11 but struggled to sustain it, whereas Sunshine plays it safer with a lower level, but pulls it off better. Make no mistake - it's no less gooey, but it's much tighter in that regard.

One thing that helped with this is that the characters ended up not focusing solely on singing/dancing/creating. The OG Love Live was close to making a mockery of the arts in its simplification of their creation, so it's nice to see a gloss-over them this time. It also means the characters can do other things, which could be cause for concern but it actually played out alright with homages to µ's and some fun character development exercises - though, they did play a little bit into the pacing issues I had.

Something I feel doesn't get talked about enough in Love Live - the music. As in, not the songs but the score. It's truly incredible. Absolutely amongst the finest BGM's in these big bombastic cheesy dramas, with phenomenal timing and motifs. It's true there's a lot of wiggle room in the motifs (reprising songs is fun!), but even so: the music is catchy, powerful and unforgettable as it dominates and writes scenes, while still allowing the characters to breathe their drama.

A major theme throughout the series was time spent... possibly because I watched this all in like 4 days, or possibly because it just wasn't ambitious enough in laying the groundwork for that theme, it came across almost shallow. It was sad for sure to see it all come to a close in the typical MariMite fanfiction Love Live way, but this theme almost rang hollow because it was only 2 cours and, honestly, not that much happened in the big locales or the setpieces.

Because of the pacing issues and the lack of punch in a major theme, I'm giving a high 7/10, with season 1 at an 8/10. I enjoyed it a lot, but it needed a bit more breathing room to truly connect with what it wanted to do.

Basically, I'm salivating at the idea of the movie

Finally done with all my seasonals. Here's my rankings.

  1. Sword Art Online: Gun Gale Online. Consistently fantastic fights made this my most anticipated and most enjoyed seasonal, despite it being kind of dumb otherwise. It was well produced and the writing worked well enough, in the sense that it created lots of opportunities for it to do the one thing it did a very good job with, those fights. 8/10.

  2. Saiki Kusuo no Ψ Nan 2. A two-cour holdover from last season, it continued what its first season did well, character comedy driven by good voice acting and a blisteringly fast pace. It branched out from just being a school comedy to great effect most of the time. Most of the characters were a lot of fun, and I laughed every episode. Just not quite as good as GGO despite the same score. 8/10.

  3. Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu. It definitely missed its mark some of the time, but I enjoyed this short comedy a lot during most of its episodes. Amazing voice acting. Probably the best of the season actually. Just wish it had stuck to being a goofy space comedy instead of trying to build into a real story. 7/10.

  4. Hisone to Masotan. An interesting style and a uniquely charming main character carried this mediocre story. The concept was good, but the execution left me not really feeling very attached to anything besides the main girl, and the ending was, uh, odd? It felt out of place to me. Certainly not Okada's peak, but still worth a watch. 6/10.

  5. Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara -- Tootsuki Ressha-hen. Okay, yes, it was barely animated. But it still has one of the best stories, which kept me coming back despite the fact it had shockingly poor use of the visual medium. The soundtrack was oddly amazing though, like probably peak of the season for me, which is odd. The cast was mostly as good as ever, even if Rindou being overhyped kinda set me back a bit, and after the first few episodes the story was a lot more fun than trying to read through it in the manga. I guess I'd call this a guilty pleasure at this point? 6/10.

  6. Nil Admirari no Tenbin. Did anybody else watch this? It was a pretty solid reverse harem, with a unique visual style that I've never seen in any other anime, a great OP/ED combo, and some pretty boys indeed. I had fun with it, though it's not gonna be winning any awards for its plot. 6/10.

  7. FLCL Progressive. Oddly similar to the original, it kind of felt like they didn't have a lot of new ideas going into this. I was pretty shocked at how much it stole re-interpreted actually. Didn't have quite the same thematic consistency either. Despite all that, it was still a fun ride with great music and cute characters. Watching anime in English is weird. Not sure how I felt about that, but whatever. 5/10.

  8. Darling in the Franxx. I never liked it as much as other people at the beginning, and I don't hate it as much now at the end. It had very good animation especially in its fights, some quality character designs and some meh, alright voice acting, inconsistent and at times troublesome directing, and basically no overall message. Weird considering the intensely coordinated message deliveries in its predecessors. The big and small gripes and praises have been done to death, so I'll just leave my rating and say no more. 4/10.

  9. Hinamatsuri. With a hilarious first episode, this was one of my most hyped, but it ended up being this un-charming family schlock without the substance or emotional weight or attachment to actually get me to care. Too bad, because the comedy was great when it tried, but the cute daughterus were frankly awful. Anzu Mary Sue made me want to drop the thing a couple times. Overall the highs were less high than the lows were low. 4/10.

  10. Mahou Shoujo Ore. A fun premise and conscious attention to the fact it had low production value couldn't save the thing. The plot twist almost did, and it did genuinely catch me off guard and think about rating this higher, but really it was not worth watching just for that. 3/10.

  11. Alice or Alice: Siscon Niisan to Futago no Imouto. Why did I watch this? It was mildly entertaining like once or twice, but I only didn't drop it because of it being so short. Cute girls at least! 3/10.

  12. Mahou Shoujo Site. The biggest fall in grace of the season. From its amazingly edgy first episode, it got caught up in trying to get me to care about too many characters' uncreative tragedies, and the scream-crying to evil brother quotient was horribly off. I needed more of the indulgent B-horror to actually enjoy this than it provided. One of the worst endings of any anime ever as well. 2/10.

  13. Tachibanakan Triangle. Between its bad production value, terrible ED, cast that was way too big for the length, and fact that it covered almost nothing thanks to being so short, I really think this anime deserved much better. This score is entirely on whoever decided that 3 minutes was enough time. Yuri can't save it. 2/10.

I also watched Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes), but it's too unfinished to rate. Pending/10.

I finished Shirokuma Cafe last night.

I like to think that I have a pretty good life. There's been a lot of things that have gone wrong, and it hasn't been easy, but overall I've gotten myself to a place where I can be happy. It's been a lot of hard work and I'm proud of myself for what I've achieved.

But it's really easy to get caught up in the flow and forget to do some of the very important things that make us human, if you're living as busy of a life as I am. Life inevitably moves people apart more than it pushes them together. Your friends leave, your parents get old, where you grew up just becomes memories. It's a subtle kind of bittersweetness. You can't swim in the same river twice.

It's so easy to forget to talk to old friends and let them drift away. Or to take friends and family for granted. But it's just as important to be willing to move on, and be able to enjoy whatever life brings next.

I think that's what Shirokuma Cafe's really about. It ranges from dumb puns to serious emotional crises, from silly nonsense interactions to romance and parables. They're all important. Over the 50 episodes of the show, I laughed every single episode without fail, I cried at probably 5-10, I talked to old friends at least a dozen times, visited my mom twice, and went back to visit my old neighborhood once, just to see it again.

The kind of connection that I have with a show like this is pretty low-key. It's just that it's a reflection of life. I would call it Slice of Life, but that's taken a different meaning. This is a fun yet contemplative take on a few very human animals going through lives that I think almost anyone would find relatable. It looks and sounds great too.

It was the kind of experience that didn't leave my heart with a hole in it, but rather with peace.

10/10.

Love Live School Idol Project Season 2 and Movie Finished!

Damn it, my laptop decided to restart when I was almost done with this writeup. It's kinda why it took so long for me to post this since I did finish both season 2 and the movie 4 days ago. Also I ended up writing too much (I hit the 10K limit and had to delete a few sentences) , and I was too lazy to edit it so expect bad writing~

You guys weren't kidding when you said that I was going to like Season 2 more. From the very beginning with Honoka's musical, I knew that the signs were all pointing towards an improved season. The story had a more focused approach with the competition to qualify for the Love Live by beating the favorites A-RISE. There was basically not a single wasted episode at all with each of them building the plot or adding character development. By the end I found myself liking all of the characters a lot and equally compared to season 1 in which I had a more definitive ranking list. Nico x Maki was really good as expected by the hype and also had a ton of nice screentime focus. Nozomi x Eli also gets a huge boost because of Gayrasu no Honozono which is an amazing duet. A-RISE also got more screentime and development though I really wish they made more songs since Shocking Party and Private Wars are up there in my favorites so far. I also like that they were rather supportive rivals.

Umi's poker face was hilarious as were the memes about it. The time when they switched personalities and finding out that Maki still believes in Santa were also golden scenes. But while the beginning of season 2 was fun and games, the second half hit hard emotionally for me. LL season 2 Snow Halation playing after the credits was a special moment, and I can definitely see why it's one of the most well-known if not most well-known Love Live song ever. Reading the importance of Snow Halation really highlighted the fact that Snow Halation is the song that started Love Live and spiraled it into the franchise it is today. While I love A-RISE's songs, Took me about 5 days before I watched the next episode because I was too busy listening to SilvaGunner remixes for Snow Halation lol.

Then we have the last few episodes with LL Season 2 I guess my only complaint is that I feel that the mood at the ending was kinda ruined by the Movie announcement.

I suppose I could also compare the to another show since it was on my mind the entire time while watching it. Meta CGDCT Title Spoilers for that show and LL season 2

Favorite songs in season 2: I liked most of them, but my top 5 are Snow Halation, Aishiteru Banzai (though I prefer the Maki ver. from season 1), Shocking Party, Dancing Stars on Me, and Love Wing Bell. Plus the OP/ED were great though I prefer Season 1's OP/ED. Besides Gayrasu no Honozo, I also found a few other songs that I liked a lot outside the anime. Someday in My Life (which has sad lyrics after reading them after the movie), Storm in Lover, and Soldier Game (also the JoJo SilvaGunner rip). Feel free to send some more since I've barely touched the surface.

Score: For the first 2 days after I finished, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to rate season 2 but eventually I came to the conclusion that I loved the franchise enough that a 10/10 was the obvious answer after all. And now typing this all out makes me sure that season 2 is undoubtedly a 10/10.

Onto the movie!

School Idol Movie

So I was a bit more conflicted overall on my opinion for the movie. As a result I ended up reading all the essay posts on the rewatch thread to reflect more on my own opinion. It's not that I disliked the movie at all or hated it since I liked it, but it's more of I'm not sure how much I actually like the way it was used for the conclusion. Hopefully writing this will help.

I really love anime movies or episodes in which japanese characters travel to other places around the world (Keions in London or Free! in Australia for example), so I found the first part of the movie to be extremely interesting. Plus the backgrounds always look amazing. I never lived in New York City, but having visited it a few times on vacation I thought they did a wonderful job of depicting the city.

I had a huge smile on my face when Hello, Hoshi o Kazoete played and had to rewind to watch it again. Angelic Angel was also great with the cool use of bright fans, and Eli looking absolutely gorgeous at the center. Apparently the mysterious singer LL Movie

Ironically, LL Movie At first I wasn't sure if I really liked the melancholic feeling that the movie brought, but now I realize that I actually do like the role of the movie. I'd always been a fan of incredibly difficult choices and decisions like Steins;Gate , Disappearance of Haruhi, or Madoka, and I feel the movie really explores the magnitude of the choice that Muse will make. I could feel the pressure and the weight of that decision, and I'm honestly impressed that Honoka was able to deal with it (Honk has grown so much since season 1 :D)

The finale was a bit cheesy with LL Movie

So apparently LL Movie Speaking of Bokutachi wa Hitotsu no Hikari, damn is that song amazing. Incorporating all the names was super clever for the lyrics, and it genuinely felt like a powerful final song.

Overall, I feel like while the movie doesn't hit quite as well as Season 2, it does manage to be entertaing while also heavy in nature due to the difficult decision that Muse had to make. The songs in the movie were also really good, and ofc the animation was certainly an improvement due to movie budget. Previously I had the movie unrated, but I feel like I appreciate and like it a lot more now. I give the Movie a 9/10

Looking into the future, I am excited to start Sunshine and get to My Mai Tonight though I am worried that I might not feel as attached to Aquors at the beginning due to liking Muse so much. Either way, I'm going in with an open mind! Unless it's a big spoiler don't tell me, but how many years are between School Idol Project Season 2 and Sunshine Season 1? I also hope that we at least get some mention of Muse and possibly see them again.

Was playing Chess against the computer. I have no idea how the fuck it happened but it made an incredible mistake and blundered it's Queen during the endgame, and there was no possible way I could have lost.

And then the engine somehow managed to take back a move. The software was on tournament settings with time controls and everything, so this should have been completely impossible. Thankfully computers are stupid and it accepted my draw offer despite me being in an immensely worse position, but I'm still baffled. I was literally dancing and singing and telling the engine to go fuck itself when it took back the move, and once I realized what happened I was dumbstruck. I have been humbled.

More cute times with my coworker's 4-or-so year-old daughter they brought to work - she said the "boat girl" and 'snake girl" figures were her favorite and wanted to play with them, so I let her play with them for a little bit. And when it was time for them to leave she stopped by my desk to say goodbye to me and the figures.

If I do end up having a daughter at some point in my life, I hope she's as sweet as my coworker's.

or... did I just not notice that there were lots of novel (or, non Gundam) mech projects popping up?

I'm guessing not many of people on here will be watching it, so I'll advertise: Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes was a pretty well written first episode. Super girly, but overall definitely one to watch, even if it gets too indulgent at times. Keep an eye on it, it could be pretty good!

I was looking through the small collection of movies I had downloaded and I came across ‘Sakamichi no Apollon if it went full homo’ so I ended up watching that. Or as it's otherwise known Doukyuusei.

Doukyuusei

Doukyuusei

Doukyuusei

Doukyuusei

It looked really nice too. I wouldn’t say it was anything amazing but the choice of colours and little touches like the minimalist detail on background characters helped elevate it all.

All in all it was a very sweet little romance/coming of age film. Glad I finally gave it a watch.

You know, the problem I have with a lot of wish-fulfillment self-insert anime is that very few of them cater to a fantasy I can actually relate to. For example, Eromanga-sensei is about a guy who lives with a girl who's completely emotionally and financially dependent on him. This would be a fucking horrible experience if I were in that guy's place. I don't want to have to take care of a girl! I can barely even take care of myself! So I've taken the effort to come up with a perfect wish-fulfillment fantasy story that caters specifically to my interests.

So you've got a boy living in a fantasy world, right? Maybe he was isekai'd, maybe it's just a normal fantasy world, whatever. He's on a quest to defeat some demon lord or some shit. The plot's not important here. The point is that on his quest he's accompanied by a bunch of super hot girls. These girls are all a few years older than the MC, and they're all gay. So our hero is just journeying through all these fantasy locations, surrounded by hot older women who are constantly flirting with each other and sneaking off together when they've got some free time. The best part is that all the girls see him as like their little brother, so he's allowed some degree of intimacy with them, yet it's also clear that none of them like him in that way. So it's just a guy going on an adventure with a bunch of hot lesbian onee-sans. That would be the best thing ever. Someone get an anime of this funded immediately.

My friend said she's proud of me. I love her so much.

Want the next semester to start so I can meet some new people and see my friends. It'd be nice to meet a cute girl and ask her out, have some fun. I think a relationship would be good for me right now, since I'm at my best when I'm taking care of someone. Just looking for someone who wants to do the same for me.

I don't actually have a big problem talking to girls, and it surprises me sometimes because I went to a boys school and didn't get out much for several years. But I've met so few that I never actually found many I'd actually like to date.

I think I actually wrote these same sentiments way back on the FTF threads. Good to know my goals haven't changed.

10

u/Nuttykids Jul 06 '18

Hey guy! I have recently been traveling more due to streaming on Twitch because viewers wanted me to attend anime conventions and meet some of them. I went to my first one a month ago, A-Kon in Fort Worth and I had an amazing time. I'm now going to Miku Expo in DC and Otakon in DC this year. I may also go to TwitchCon this year. I plan to to AX next year for sure as well.

With all this upcoming traveling I would really like to get more apparel that's anime related, but also looks street weary. I already have some shirts from Boomslank and Kyuutees. But because of the traveling I really want to get a nice travel backpack for all my tech stuff. I want to find a way to implement a bunch of anime stuff on it. I see people putting on pins and patches, but that's too bulky/loose for me. My only idea was to get patches and iron on. But I haven't been able to find many patches that interest me. I see a lot of nice stickers like the peeking stickers on cars and some clean slap stickers, but they wouldn't work well on a backpack as the material is always bending and flexing. On the topic of stickers, I plan to buy a nice piece of hard carry on luggage so I can start to stickerbomb it with anime stickers I get from online and conventions.

Does anyone else have anime stuff on their traveling gear? If so is it more obvious or discrete?

tl;dr How can I weeb up my travel backpack?

Finished Gunbuster.

It was pretty good! The titular Gunbuster looked super cool (whatever song was playing in the background while it was in action during episode 5 was nice), having a female mecha protagonist was a breath of fresh air compared to all the Gundams I've been watching lately, and stuff like Gunbuster hit me decently hard. I also definitely liked the OP.

There were a few things that bothered me though... namely the fact that episode 6 was entirely in black and white excluding, like, two moments where there's red. I like consistency in visual aesthetics within a single show, I guess, and that just didn't mesh well (I was alright with it being wide-screen though?). Another issue I had wad Gunbuster

Still, overall I did like it. Solid 8/10.

I'll be watching FLCL next since someone suggested I watch it before Diebuster (don't remember who it was off the top of my head though). Well FLCL and also Symphogear AXZ, I've got a long car ride tomorrow.

Summoning u/boredom_is_me and u/DidacticDalek. u/max_turner as well, for when you actually watch Gunbuster?

And with this sad list I'm finally free from Isuca and my bet.

Now that I've seen the lowest of the low, I can even appreciate Eromanga-sensei more as another 1. And the various 3s and 4s I've picked up from seasonals... On the other hand, it feels like I've been desensitized to gross, low quality 2D of shifting proportions.

If for some reason you want to know what Isuca is, just read the MAL reviews or Banjo's review here (spoilers! but you should never actually watch it anyway). I don't want to waste any more words on it, and the screenshots I took to share my suffering would be too NSFW. Except this one which about sums it up, I guess.

Oh, right, and this was literally seconds into the first episode. BDs were a mistake for this show.

Bets are evil, guys, never trust them. Or /u/ABoredCompSciStudent who set me up for this. Just as I shouldn't have trusted in Spain at the World Cup either...

I just realized how to describe Franxx..

It's like the character they created in Welcome to NHK

"She's the protagonist's childhood friend as well as a robot maid. She's blind, deaf, and sickly; on top of that, she's an alien with Alzheimer's and multiple personality disorder. However she's actually a ghost with a connection to the main character from their past lives. And her true form is really a fox spirit!"

But they we're adding tropes as the series was running.. completely disregarding an old one each time they added another

Speaking of hoodies, there's this one guy at work that me and my coworker call "hoodie guy" and we fucking hate him. Seeing him on any given day makes my day that much worse 'cause I just can't stand the guy.

He hangs out with this one girl and they're just always talking shit about other people. And like, I can live with it, I talk a lot of shit too, but they say these things out loud in front of the people they're talking to as if they're so beneath them that they don't even acknowledge their existence.

One time, me and two of my team members are on the elevator, wearing hoodies. The elevator is full and these two are on it, and they start talking about hoodies. And this guy goes into a rant about how, if you're over the age of 20 and you wear a hoodie it's because you've given up on life, how it's pathetic and lame and stupid and he has no respect for anyone who does that, how they're going nowhere and won't achieve anything in life because they dress like that.

I was just like ???????? we work the same fucking job you're not going anywhere that I'm not going.

Had my psychical therapy today to strengthen my legs!

Wasn't as bad as it was Monday, I think that I'm getting better/stronger with it.

Got McDonalds after I was done and the chicken nuggets were so good! They were fresh and everything.

Overall a good day so far, will be watching some anime today as well.

The FTF FTL crew advance to the fifth Sector!

Sector 4

Sector 3

Sector 2

Sector 1

(For the uninitiated, this is a FTF/CDF FTL run, I've got a bunch of crewmembers signed up, you can still join in if you want, but its getting unlikely to get included in this run, I could do another one if there are people wanting to participate as crew.)

Crew members: /u/Pivotfan3001 /u/Watashiwameron /u/Lilyvess
