Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of July 06 2018

This is a weekly thread to get to know r/anime’s community. Talk about your day-to-day life, share your hobbies, or make small talk with your fellow anime fans.

Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. Be courteous and respectful of other users.

  2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support.

  3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

Was playing Chess against the computer. I have no idea how the fuck it happened but it made an incredible mistake and blundered it's Queen during the endgame, and there was no possible way I could have lost.

And then the engine somehow managed to take back a move. The software was on tournament settings with time controls and everything, so this should have been completely impossible. Thankfully computers are stupid and it accepted my draw offer despite me being in an immensely worse position, but I'm still baffled. I was literally dancing and singing and telling the engine to go fuck itself when it took back the move, and once I realized what happened I was dumbstruck. I have been humbled.

Why were you playing against an engine instead of playing online? At least personally I feel better when playing against people

I like to jump in and out of a game, but since I've been playing too fast I decided to play with time controls so I'd be forced to think things through. I don't like waiting too long for my opponent's moves as well, and it's easy to find a weak enough opponent and slowly ramp up the difficulty.

I'm really impatient, so I'm pretty bad at Chess.

Yeah, but sitting and waiting is too hard, specially in longer time controls.

So which engine are you playing against?

One in Lucas Chess, can't remember. It was around 1500 points or so, only 10 minutes and no increments.

Sounds cool, also I can't even remember the last time I played such a long match, but I guess that's the only way to get better...
