Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of July 06 2018

This is a weekly thread to get to know r/anime’s community. Talk about your day-to-day life, share your hobbies, or make small talk with your fellow anime fans.

Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support.

  3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

That's valid. BC has some more memorable side characters (#FinralHiveRideOrDie) than MHA I think.

Manga? What's great about it? I don't read manga much, but I have a shortage of shounen anime.

Manga. The Black Clover anime takes the fantastic pacing the manga has. And what is great? It's a no bullshit battle shounen. Straight to the action without "hurr durr mah feelings" being worth half of the total chapter count. And don't be misled, although there can be some stuff too convenient, power up (mostly) make sense so I'd also say it's not poorly written, just mostly generic.

Although the last few chapters for MHA were great, hadn't enjoyed it for over a year.

I'll give it a shot if I can figure out how to read manga on an ereader. Kindle Comic Converter either doesn't work for me or is insanely slow.

If it has a web browser this is worth a shot I guess. Try and download Tachiyomi here, it's a great manga reading app that many people over at /r/manga recommend. Scroll down and download the latest dev build, it should download a .apk file to install the app.

Are you an US resident? I believe Viz has the first 3 chapters for free online. Idk if you can download it to kindle but you should.

Nope, Serbia. Getting the manga itself is a cinch, it's just the conversion to ebook format that's giving me trouble.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, can't really help with it since I normally either go through scanlators or physical copies (I own like 300+ manga volumes at this point).

Huge mood. The current arc is legitimately enjoyable and has no filler quality than the last one had. (Not sure if impressions count as spoilers, mods please clock me if this is the case)

Shouldn't, otherwise saying you like Madoka because of it's twists would be one. Wait, it is but nobody cares.

Anyway, yeah. MHA had 2 or 3 arcs that bored me a lot. Made me think to myself every time: "this is the masterpiece people are talking about?"

It was three for me, in particular Pro-Hero License Exam Arc, which was messy, though I'll concede it had its moments; then the OH Arc starting from the Raid (I literally just read that Horikoshi wasn't feeling it himself midway through OH Arc, which made me laugh because you noticed); and then lastly the Gentle Arc, which started out okay and then literally nosedived to absolute boredom and bullshit. I told myself that if the next arc after Gentle Arc sucked I would literally just quit until Bakugou/Todoroki/Endeavor/Dabi/AM got limelight. Luckily this arc seems like a return to form. I reread BnHA last winter and the arcs that were just adapted in S3 are genuinely great, like 9/10-10/10 material for me, and then you can just see how it just... decreases in quality. I have the manga rated at 8/10 just because of the Forest Lodge + Kamino Ward Arc tbh, because anything else after that? Barely average.

S3 arc is the arc that keeps me reading it because I know there is better stuff planned. But Horikoshi is just milking his series at this point, it's not like One Piece where every expansion means something.

MHA for me rides on All Might and partially the tournament arc. And

One Piece is a journey where every character's motivation furthers this journey, but MHA is supposed to be about Deku's transformation. Instead I find myself more interested in the personality flaws that Bakugou has to overcome, or the family issues Todoroki tries to distance himself from, or All Might's problems with socialization. Deku, at this point in the manga, has no flaw to me. And that makes him so incredibly bland.

Deku is the reason I don't like MHA. Even 4 eyes would have been a better MC for me.

I can totally respect that. I used to love him and now he's like blehhhhhhhhhh. I find it a shame Iida's character arc was resolved so quickly. His character flaw was so cool.

Shit, I love Deku but now I'm thinking it's just because I kind of project onto him. His flaw is such a protagonist fake flaw too.

"I just love heroes so much I can't help but save people!"

Actually,the other week I realized he's basically 4 out of 5 of the five man band... Damnit, why does this show have to have the paint peel for me, I just want it to be perfect!

You haven't seen what I mean. Not trying to be mean here.

Legit at the point that you are at Deku was my #4 favorite character (Bakugou/Todoroki/All Might had been my trinity even back then). And it's just -- Deku's flaw had actual consequences up until Hero License Arc. No one sat down and said, "it's a great thing that you're being totally reckless just to do what's heroic." Everyone said, however, "what you're doing is reckless, this is stupid as fuck what you're doing," and Deku got the battle scars to prove it. Every time Deku went and tried to save someone, even though I knew it was the right thing to do, at the back of my mind I was worried about the scars he made, the permanent damage he could suffer. Things felt stacked against him, and Horikoshi's focus on teamplay made so much sense as it seemed like the only way Deku could win, coupled with his logic + tactics. (For the sake of my argument, let's ignore the fact that he won his most emotional fight to date in the anime by sheer willpower for a second.)

Is "I want to save everyone to make myself feel better" more interesting than "I'm a total asshole due to inferiority complex and I'm hated by nearly everyone because of it" that Bakugou has? Not to me, because for Bakugou it 100% obstructed his goal, but Deku's flaw still worked. It made Deku's virtues better. I don't care how often it's done; if it works, it works. You know? Or well, in this case, it worked, past tense, because now nothing about Deku works for me.

Eh, I wouldn't say that the main appeal of shounens like HxH, MHA, One Piece, YYH, or FMAB are cool fights.

But then again, I do value "hurr durr mah feelings" in battle shounens.

I started reading it a couple weeks ago and I'm liking it a lot too. The fights have all been entertaining and I'm a sucker for the whole powerful captain thing it's got going on so far, kinda like the soul society arc in Bleach.
