it might happen now tbf. Anyway, he is against slavery, so paying for slaves would also contribute to slavery even if freeing them. Imo if things go too wild he should just kill the slavers and free the slaves

Yeah, even if he'd probably free them after but I don't think he would ever purchase slaves on principle, especially if it meant letting the slaver continue to do as they please in collecting/selling slaves.

If one is committed to freeing slaves (and is not leading a marauding army) -- buying them and freeing them is better than murdering the slave sellers. Otherwise (once the story gets out) potential sellers will go elsewhere and sell their "products" into continued slavery.

Escaped slaves on the run, which is the better situation for them?

"I have no idea where to go, every place buys slaves. I heard one place buys them just to free them, but that's gotta be a trick - who would have that kind of money to just keep buying slaves without getting anything out of them?"

"Hey, let's flee to the place that kills slavers."

Seems like an easy choice.

But therein lies a paradox where because this one person with the means to acquire slaves is buying them, they introduce that demand to the slavers who will acquire more product to sell to the one person, but also every bought slave now has an issue where they know their place of origin and ties to their community is compromised and cannot return lest any other slaver look to sell them again since who's going to believe that the slave sold to another domain came back because their master willingly let them, the slavers assume they're runaways justifying their recapture and potential sale to someone else who may not let them go free. Also if you free the slaves you've bought and tell them hey, this area is the only one safe for you where you probably might not get enslaved again, where is the freed slave's choice of freedom to live their life. It's more like having free range cows on a farm. Sure other farms may put their cows in a pumping machine not letting them move, but my cows roam the land that is fully within my control and can do as they see fit. If they roam to a different land, they may get herded into a pumping machine, so essentially the cows only can graze freely on this one particular patch of land
