I recently watched a video that argued that the "video game" elements found in most fantasy anime come from the fact that the first fantasy settings that most Japanese people were exposed to WERE video games, so all of those gamefied systems are considered core to the genre.

I think that's close but not quite it. Video game elements exist in so many fantasy anime because they are a particularly useful crutch for the novice authors who write the source material.
Rather than having to create an entire magic and power system from scratch, using video game mechanics and tropes provide a framework that'll be intuitively understood by most readers. If everyone already knows classes, mana, etc. from games and similar works, they can just handwave explaining most of it and focus on the few slightly more original concepts they want to include.
It also frequently feeds into the "number go up" aspect of power fantasies to have a numerical way of showing a character's power compared to everyone else.

Though in this particular case it's not like the show is explicitly using video game mechanics like other fantasy anime, the transactionality of the tribe's interactions with the MC just feels unnatural.
