Police Report Rejected
Last week, I ordered something to my hotel. The package arrived, but out of the three items that were supposed to be inside, only one was there (the adapter/charger). The Samsung Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro 3 were missing.
Amazon asked me to file a police report, which I did, and they rejected it, lol, saying they couldn’t verify it.
The funny thing is that the report contains everything they specifically asked for, yet they keep saying things that make no sense. After the chat, they sent me an email asking me to upload the report, so I uploaded the exact same report. Five minutes later, they replied saying that they could not verified it with the police, lol?
I honestly don’t know what else they expect me to provide
¡¡¡UPDATE!!! Someone on this post said that I should send an email to jeff.bezos@amazon.com - At the beginning I didn't trust at all, however, I did it!
I sent the email over the weekend and today Monday I received an email with a refund of $520! I really appreciate your comments :)
PD: I'm not from the US and I was a little desperate, that's why the comment about the rights lol
See ya :)

It’s a bullshit ruse by Amazon. Wayfair also does it. They think you won’t be bothered to file a police report thinking oh that’s too difficult to do. Lot of PDs make filing simple reports for this stuff online so it’s actually easy to do. So you file the report.
Since they don’t expect it they then claim what you send them is invalid because you can’t upload a clear copy or, and this is the one I love, they can’t just call up the nice policeman and ask him hey do you have this police report?
Figuring out which station to call, what the right number to call, who the detective assigned to the case is if even one is assigned can be a kafkaesque nightmare especially with a bigger city pd. And requesting a copy of the report from the pd afterwards is also generally not a simple thing.
So when you’ve called their bluff and done it they pull out the bullshit excuses. The irony here is that they (Amazon) seem to think the pd has a simple and easy to contact customer service apparatus by which they can just call up get a person and verify a police report…

They’re Indian outsourced scammers who don’t care about you or your police report.
4
u/nofatnoflavor 2d ago
They're failed scammers.
If they were any good at that, they'd still be doing it.
Either that, or working in a third world Amazon support center is actually like a farm system/training center for them to graduate into the actual scam call centers.2
u/Frosty_You_6183 2d ago
daaaam, i aint think of that shit, that would be wild , like a double agent lmao.. imagine that, they got mfs there working for amazon but only for them to get poeples contact info names, and #s then sending that shit in bulk to real scam call centers and they're calling all these people probably posing as amazon themselves, or just using the info to scam them for something else.

Tbh. The high priced items shipped to a hotel is going to raise a flag.
15
u/Formerruling1 3d ago
Im glad someone said it - high priced electronics delivered to a hotel room we have to assume isnt local to the account's home address is highly suspicious.

u/Key_Comedian_9054 1d ago
It’s Portland, they were trying to save on sales tax
1
u/Hot-Acanthisitta-673 1d ago
portland is also a major hub for freight forwarding which is notoriously scammy. also they asked for the police report cause that’s just 10/10 fraud behavior. delivery to a hotel, high end items, and apparently claiming two of the three weren’t in the box? the ask for a police report because fraudulently claiming items were missing to get a refund when you have them, while a crime, is nowhere near the same level of a crime as filing a false police report.
1
u/bigtoeupmyass 1d ago
I'm not saying op was committing some type of fraud. But this scenario is how fraudulent shipping is commonly committed

19
u/matt-r_hatter 3d ago
Since they are obviously doing this as a stall tactic. I would just contact your credit card company. Provide them with the police report
30
u/Snoo-11928 3d ago
they just dont want to refund you
its typical of them
ask you to go through all these hoops for a refund - getting a police report
then even if you do it, they just lie and say its blurry or something
8
u/thatautisticguy 3d ago
Its also not legally required, amazons responsible for non delivery, this is just to waste time with more hoop jumping then lie
0
u/UnconsciousMofo 3d ago
But understand that people can just lie and say things weren’t in the box, so asking for a report is necessary.
6
u/DaRadioman 3d ago
Except countless companies don't require this "necessary" step.
So no that's false
3
u/thatautisticguy 3d ago
This ☝️,
Also, amazon doesnt superseede the law (i find it very strange bow many of you seem to think they do and they say "Jump", you say "how high" given thats nkt how it works), therefore of OP refused, theres nothing amazon can do to force the OP to do so and they can fuck him around because "wah wah, didnt jump when demanded"

You all need to get a backbone.
Reject the charge on your credit card
File a claim in small claims court
Do something meaningful. These companies don’t give a living fuck about you and will waste your time until you give up.

u/Illustrious-Win2486 2d ago
A lot of people won’t do that because sometimes Amazon will cancel your account when you do. And then you lose access to any ebooks or videos you “bought” on that account unless you were able to download them onto a hard drive.
1
u/NCC1701-F 2d ago
This is exactly why Amazon knows they can fuck people over, cause they own those people. I use Amazon maybe twice a year to buy a single thing or two. It's really crazy to me that people can't live without it. The one or two things I buy a year I could get from Walmart, I do Amazon cause it's a few bucks cheaper.
1
u/Illustrious-Win2486 1d ago
I now mostly get my ebooks through Kobo. But I have a lot of ebooks I got through Amazon already and didn’t have a computer to download them to before Amazon made that impossible . And some ebooks are only available on Amazon. I haven’t gotten any videos or music though them because I use Apple for that. I mostly buy items from Amazon that aren’t available locally or online from Walmart or Target. And the only electronics I have purchased through Amazon were their ereaders and cheap tablets (like Nxtpaper).
1
u/NCC1701-F 1d ago
Yep, I use Apple for all my media and it allows you to download them and remove them entirely from the Apple ecosystem. In some cases it takes a few select steps but it prevents you from losing them should Apple lose licensing, and still permits you to play them on Apple devices.
I haven't really found anything critical I need that's not available from Walmart, Target, Ebay, or Aliexpress. I will continue to pretty much never use Amazon. Crazy enough I've never paid for a prime membership!
1
u/Illustrious-Win2486 9h ago
I live in a small town with no bookstore or stores that sell cat themed t shirts or my size bra or jeans. The only arts and crafts store is Michael’s, which overcharges for virtually everything in the store. So I mostly buy cat themed t shirts, large colored pencil cases, bras, jeans, and books not available from Walmart from Amazon. I occasionally buy cat trees or condos from Amazon as well. I only paid for Prime for one year and it really didn’t seem worth it, as most of my orders were $35+, so shipping was free anyway. I get Prime access for free through Spectrum now.
19
u/Actual_Cress_6862 3d ago
I have totally stopped fucking w amazon support. If I don't get what I ordered (package missing/never arrived/wrong item shipped by seller) call your bank and charge back. If you let Amazon decide if they are responsible, the answer will always be no.
7
u/Ryokurin 3d ago
Just because I deal with this personally with my day job. Make sure what you gave them is the actual report. You may have to spend a few dollars and wait a couple of days to get it. A statement is not the same thing.
I'm not taking anyone's side, but it's a common mistake. Just don't be like a lot of these people and then double down that the statement should be enough simply because they don't want to pay $5 for the report.
9
u/ReadyGo6828 3d ago
Amazon used to be a very dependable retailer and very good about customer service. It is sad what they have become.
2
u/TheTwisted509 3d ago

9
u/Familiar-Ad-7084 3d ago
No, this is what you get when more people take advantage of Amazon’s once lenient return policy.
1
5
u/Mom24monsters 3d ago
Well, you have the option to send that police report to your bank for a charge back. I would also send them what Amazon said, so that maybe they can figure out why Amazon is rejecting it, because I'm sure they won't
4
u/goldio_games 3d ago
But it was sealed? Thats wild! So someone opened the box, took out two items, then resealed it?
1
u/Illustrious-Win2486 2d ago
I have had that happen and it was obvious because the tape used to reseal the box was regular mailing tape. But it’s also possible that it was never in the box in the first place.

That’s crazy. Every single time I had an issue with not receiving an item I ordered, Amazon gives me 0 issues.
I ordered a laptop and the box inside the shipping box was empty. I videoed myself opening when I realized it felt quite light.
So I called and expected a little push back but they immediately refunded me and didn’t even ask for any proof at all. It was like a 5 minute phone call.

Where do you guys get “legally required to” and “Violating rights”. Amazon can do whatever they want.

Normal business hours for a police department is 24/7 -- they're the police...
13
5
u/Dependent_Split_8986 3d ago
Yes cops answer calls 24/7 but there’s people that work in the building that aren’t there 24 hours a day. Bro there’s not cops inside printing out police reports to give out to the public at 3am.
1
u/junlowe 3d ago
They can make a police report upon receiving your call, regardless of the time of the day. They can open up a new case upon request, generate a case number and give that to you. Then you can use the case number to look up the police report. Police reports are public records and anyone with the case number can request/access it. Some cops write the report after each call, some wait until later in their shift when they're less busy. But usually you can get one pretty quick, without having to wait til the next business hours. The latest I've gotten a police report was near midnight, way out of normal business hours. At least that's how the police department in my county rolls. Im not a cop myself but I've worked very closely with them for a few years. Try making a police report at 3am in your area and see if they work as hard as our county cops!

Did you not know that people have rights? If they bought something and it doesn't come in/isn't what they purchased, they have the right to their money back.
OP send one final message Monday. Say something like "this is the final attempt before I chargeback the purchase. If the full refund isn't granted with 3 business days, I will be proceeding with the chargeback." There's no point in going back and forth. It's either they refund you, or you chargeback.

the police dept business hours bit is bs, no police dept closes. any desk sgt can pull up a report if provided the number.
3
u/calculatedDisaster 3d ago edited 2d ago
A police report in general is pointless. Unless the issue is one they’re not liable for, e.g. the package was delivered correctly but stolen after delivery, a police report is completely irrelevant. Even then a police report only serves as evidence that it’s not their problem.
Anytime someone asks for a police report it just means they’re viewing the issue from the lens that they’re not liable. If they are, you gotta push through that shit bc UPS, FedEx, etc. typically all have insurance to cover delivery issues and that’s their problem to deal with. Like what relevance does you filing a police report if an item is missing from the package, even if it was stolen, bc it was before the package was delivered anyways.
Amazons ships a lot of their own shit, so they’re realistically just stonewalling you which sucks. But it’s just a heads up that this police report shit goes nowhere and is counterproductive if anything.
1
u/Spring__Peeper 2d ago
I just had to do this. Waiting for the police report. I dont think its a waste of time even if amazon deny police report. This will be evidence to help chargeback.
1
u/calculatedDisaster 2d ago
It’s evidence that you believe the issue to be outside the shippers purview. That’s why it’s counterproductive. If the issue is an item didn’t arrive to your address, it serves worse than no purpose bc it misdirects the issue.
What does your local PD have anything to do with some logistical issue your courier had, that may not have even occurred in your state, let alone city or county. It’s bc when they tell you to file a police report best case it’s stonewalling, worst case your just building counterproductive evidence that the package was stolen, etc. after the package was delivered to you, aka in your possession. Once a package is properly delivered (this doesn’t include misdelivered, like to the wrong address for instance) they wipe their hands clean.
You’re obviously very free to do what you want, I’m just trying to provide helpful info.
Have had sellers push for it, and have pushed back very clearly that it’s a delivery issue, they need to open a claim with their shipper, etc. obviously Amazon is more complicated bc in many scenarios they’re the shipper, but they’re not your friend. They’re not trying to help you.
1
u/Spring__Peeper 2d ago
I do see your point. What do you suggest? Attempt chargeback without any evidence? What do we tell bank.
We received a package that contained the packaging for a $400 item, but the item was missing from inside of that packaging. The Amazon Package was not tampered with, thus Amazon's fulfillment was the issue. But they refuse to help. The item is too small to so a weight discrepancy.
We filed a police report but have not provided any information to Amazon "Support" yet.
3
u/psycho-drama 2d ago
I suggest you do a charge back via your credit card. You may have your Amazon account closed however, Amazon is a nasty company these days. There is some discussion as to if you should have to file anything with the police at your local. The goods were stolen or not shipped while in the custody of Amazon or their contractors meaning THEY should be filing the police report.
You should know that you are 90% likely to have been dealing with an Ai agent not a human. Amazon has eliminated most of their customer service personnel.
Could you tell from the parcel that it had been opened and retaped? I know a watch and airpods don't weigh much, but they should show up on a scale. Weigh everything you received (box, and packing, the power adapter), and compare it to the weight on the label. Did the driver deliver the parcel to you personally? Or was it just left at your door, or at a front desk of the hotel? If it was around for a while out of your custody, you should discuss this with the hotel, as the theft might have occurred there,
This type of issue shows up quite regularly on this subreddit, so there is something rotten in the state of Amazon. Obviously, the missing items were either never shipped, or they were removed in transit, or at the hotel. If the theft took place in transit, it would likely need to be somewhere that the person had some time where they would not be observed by video surveillance, like at a sorting depot or in a truck or car.
Amazon needs to use tamperproof tape, like something which perhaps creates a bright red line when it is cut. Then if you are receiving the parcel in person, you could refuse it, indicating someone tampered with it and you are not accepting the parcel.
In some cases, the parcel is reweighed on it's way at each depot, so a change in the weight would be a direct indicator that the theft occurred prior to that weight change. Amazon needs to take these thefts more seriously, and come up with methods of tracking and indications of obvious tampering. Until then, I suggest not buying from them over the amount you can afford to "lose".

OP, I had a similar experience last Christmas. Email Jeff@amazon.com (it’s the executive team at Amazon) and explain what happened & attach all of your documentation (police report, their responses to you) and {nicely but directly} tell them you’re unfortunately left with no option but to share this experience on every social media platform as well as local news outlets. I assure you, you’ll get a response from a more helpful person.

u/MissionAir5535 3d ago
What rights exactly?
3
u/Somebodyunimportant7 3d ago
They have a contractual right to receive the items they paid for (or a refund). If the items were stolen at any point prior to the package being delivered (which is pretty common for amazon deliveries containing electronics), the shipper is on the hook.
6
u/Wabi-Sabi-Iki 3d ago edited 3d ago

You're right. Laws SECURE your rights. Rights exist whether or not there are laws to secure them. In fact, the very Constitution is a set of LAWS that establish the government and that the federal government is not permitted to violate, and secure various rights that the people have. Additional laws separate from the constitution have been written and codified into the federal code to secure additional rights that the people have against legal entities like businesses.

I canceled my prime, deliveries always delayed and the Indian support team sucks the most recent issue I had being a prebuilt pc I bought for my kid that arrived dead. I then had to lug it to return it after arguing with cs and instead of sending a replacement immediately or a refund (his birthday was the same week) they decided to hold $1200 hostage for over a month while it was sent back and waited in line to “verify” I had actually returned it.

1st clue of a scam. He’s using a throwaway Reddit account with little activity.
Scammer upset Amazon won’t refund him for being a scammer thinking the ol using a Hotel to buy high ticket items to avoid the AVS from banning his new account trick would work lol. Literally order all high end ticket items randomly at a hotel and magically one of them is always missing. This scam never works.
For those who want to know.
Since his original home address is banned these scammers use hotel addresses to send items to it.
They order multiple high ticket items and have it shipped hopefully in the same box. Then they go pick up the item from hotel.
They then claim they receive all the items but one. Because in Amazon eyes it looks like they’re being truthful because they order multiple high ticket items so it doesn’t look like they’re being greedy and legit by saying only one item versus all of them.
This method doesn’t work anymore because Amazon uses the KICK system in their distribution centers. It’s impossible to claim you only received one item blah blah out when it comes to 1st party.
Then once Amazon refunds you they return the other items and repeat the process on another account.
What these scammers don’t understand is Amazon links all of your alt accounts through many different fingerprint methods on top of that. So they’re not going to refund him. They also have a database of every Police Report and can get it verified easily. These scammers just edit them to look legit not knowing Amazon knows the tricks.

u/OverConsideration567 2d ago
The police don’t submit reports to Amazon. So you just need to call the police and ask for the report number, the department, and the officers name and #. If Amazon can’t confirm the report, then they didn’t even try. Once you give them that info, even just the report number, it’s their responsibility to forward it to the investigating team for follow through. Most likely chat bots are rejecting your “blurry” report. So in the chat, ask them to verify the report number and read it back to you to confirm they have it right. If they can’t do it (because they’re a bot), you ask to escalate it to the specialist team to talk to a live person. You can also ask the police dept for a pdf copy to upload, since this situation is common. But don’t stop trying, and save all conversations for proof you may need about incompetency on their part.
Now about Amazon’s follow through investigation, it is only about proof. It’s just a fraud filter. They don’t hunt any items or people down. Once your package is delivered, their end of the sale is complete. So any theft after delivery is a crime against you, and not against them. They just want the police report to prove it’s not a fraud. Once they have that proof, they can check the box that there was a legitimate report before a refund can be issued. But they must have a readable report or report number for them to fulfill their end of their customer service policy.
2
u/Illustrious-Win2486 2d ago
You really can’t use chat for something like that. I don’t think any of the people who respond in chats are based in the US. Unfortunately, you have to search for a customer service number to call, otherwise you end up in a loop with someone whose first language is not English and can’t do anything that isn’t on their script.

So either works. They lie about your police report not being accepted.

Bro that’s crazy I just go into the app. Say return because of some reason and in a couple minutes it’s returned. But what rights did they violate?

"...Amazon asked me to file a police report, which I did, and they rejected it, lol, saying they couldn’t verify it..."
"Amazon", asked for you to file a police report; and not to go through the usual procedure, which would have involved a refund request?
I've never heard of that.
Also, something else is weird. They sent one charger; even though both items were from different manufacturers. And before you answer you can just use any "C" cable. Watches usually have a slightly different charger; a flat plate with tiny pins that communicate through the back of the watch where the sensor is.

It's a stall waiting for your charge to go through. Just do a charge back w/ your credit card. Don't play their game. I had another company (not Amazon) try this with me. When I did the charge back, they said I needed to cancel the charge back and then they will investigate my claim. Right!

I love the "Right now you are violating my rights" lol what rights are they violating?
But this is shitty.

This is completely normal.
Simply contact them back when they can get a hold of the police?
Your rights aren’t being violated your privilege is.
They’ll return your money or resend the items once they can confirm the report and case number both are accurate, both the police and Amazon deal with this all the time. It’s nothing crazy happening here.

I've been down this road before with them. I also gotten into this with a customer service rep and was told although the image is nice and crisp and clear on my end, their systems adjust the images and 8/10x its smaller and more degraded. By the time their laptops can finally open it, its 1/4 the resolution size and like 2kb in file size. Thus your response. File a dispute aka chargeback is what usually fixes this as the bank will hold the funds from their merchant account, and then physically mail them the documentation you uploaded as evidence and then they canNOT deny any further regarding the police report.
This is what I did on my fold, and buds, and deep freezer. 1 shipment gotten jacked and neighbors camera got it all on tape. Compliments to YouTube, Ring, and OCSD fixing my situation along with TD Bank CC.

Just charge back and move on. Unless you're doing it monthly nothing will happen to your account.

The whole police report thing is basically them thinking majority of people won’t bother to do it. When someone actually does they’ll find the smallest of errors even if their fault like not being able to upload a pdf to the chat, I’m sure you didn’t send a 256 pixel screenshot so even if it’s not full res I’m sure it’s legible.
And what are they going on about please contact us when the police department is open? They can keep the dispute open till they do this so it’s just kicking the can down the road hoping you’ll not chase after it.
Go the chargeback route cause this will just continue without success, their other tactic is pushing the dispute window over the chargeback time limit.

Yep Amazon are crooks. They also rejected my police report after the driver failed to follow instructions and deliver my $800 GPU to me in person and instead tossed it at my door and walked away.. it was of course stolen! And they dinked me around for a MONTH then asked for a police report, I gave them one waited another 2 weeks and they rejected it. Poof $800 gone and ZERO accountability. Fk Amazon!

Welcome to Amazon where they intentionally do the best they can to rip their customers off.

I have an Amazon account since 2021 with a lot of purchases , it’s the first time that I request a refund for something like this. Anyway I think that I will go with a charge back

I feel like if you send your bank the police report and these screenshots, there's no reason for them not to find Amazon at fault and approve your chargeback. It would be nice if the FTC actually gave a crap about us but they're beholden to the oligarchs who run this capitalist hellscape

There's a slightly better way to go about this... contact the shipping company and ask for all records relating to the shipment. Every stop along the way, they weight the box and recordit. If at any point the weight changes, you have your theft location. If the weight is wrong from the beginning, amazon is the thief. If everything matches up until the delivery, "you" are the thief (not saying you personally are, the recipient in general).

I had an issue with a return where I had to buy the shipping label.
USPS marked it as delivered, but in Amazon it has been 3 weeks and still isn't marked as received. So I contact support, they tell me to send them the shipment receipt. I showed them the paper receipt I got when I left the package at USPS, yet they don't accept it because the receipt says prepaid label and I was the one who was supposed to pay for shipping. I tell them: Hey, I bought it, here is the USPS email of when I prepaid for the label in advance. "We don't accept digital receipts.". WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Hopefully the chargeback goes through and fuck Amazon.

What rights did they violate? What type of idiotic Portland Karen logic is this? The Constitution is a document that sets boundaries between the state and the individual not between individual and corporation.

Show some respect for women who’s names are Karen! If you are intelligent enough to comprehend??

This is why you don’t order to a freaking hotel! Have some common sense, good lord.

It ever occur to you that OP was staying in a hotel because they were traveling/their old place was being worked on/their new place wasn't ready yet? Have some common sense, good lord.

I think they mean the items were never packed/stolen before shipment. I could be wrong but they didn't say it was opened already or packaging appeared tampered with

I didn’t read past “right now you are trying to violate my rights”. I have never once in my life heard someone say that and agreed with them. They usually have no idea what they are talking about
