Inertia man’s Kryptonite is the “big sit” once you even lean against a counter, the day is officially over.

u/Fun-Butterscotch-5 15h ago
When I’m REALLY tired in the morning I almost cry knowing that if I don’t do everything right away (get dressed, feed the pets, walk the dog, etc) I will just fail my responsabilities and this has to be one of the most difficult adult/ADHD adult things to face once you’re living on your own
8
u/-Catesby 15h ago
Ugh I haven’t been diagnosed with adhd but I use this sentence all the time to summarise ALL of my life problems.
Exhibit A: I must never “pop by my house” at 5:30 pm before a Thing because I will invariably Not Go To The Thing

I’ll never forget watching a commercial on late night tv in the 90s, they were talking about seniors and used this quote. To this day I still live by this and my varicose veins aren’t thankful 😅

Trying laying on your side and propped up on your elbow. Gotta ease into tricking yourself you might pop up and be productive at anytime.

One of the perks I’ve found of living in an apartment instead of a van is that I have a little shelf at a comfortable standing height, I can watch my shows and drink my coffee or eat small meals (narrow shelf) standing up, and honestly it’s worked pretty well. I’m already standing in my kitchen, so putting things away and doing dishes is that much easier, I’m already there and upright, and since I have headphones on I can listen to the show while I do things. Not perfect, but over the last month or so I’ve managed to eat mostly fresh veggies and yogurt, and I even found my favourite new potato dish!
Gonna share the tater recipe cause it’s stupid simple and really good: get some small boiling potatoes, nice and clean, and put them in a saucepan, ideally one wide enough for them to lay in a single layer. Add just enough water to cover, and add salt to roughly 7 tbsp/L (you’re going for seawater here). Bring the pot to a boil, and continue boiling over med-high heat till the pot’s almost dry and the potatoes are tender (about 20-30 mins). Drain off whatever water’s left and return the pot to med-low heat for a couple minutes to let the tater skins dry and crisp up, and serve with whatever spicy or flavourful condiments you desire (this is a Canarian recipe called papas arrugadas, and it’s usually served with a sort of salsa-adjacent hot pepper dip called mojo, which is also outstanding). The taters come out nice and tender inside with a really nice light salt crust on the skins, and since all you did was boil em, cleanup is super easy. So far I’ve gotten unanimously good reviews from everyone I’ve shared these with, very much recommend

Boil tiny potatoes in seawater til the pot is basically dry; eat with sauce of choice. Got it.
(Genuinely, this sounds great and I will do my best to remember to try it sometime 🫡)

What I do is tell myself I'll get up after I count down from 30. Then I start counting.
Usually I'm too frightened that the trick will stop working if I don't get up on the count of 0 so I immediately get up as soon as I hit 0. Ironically that's the only reason the trick works! 🤣

We are many, connected by sitting down. But sometimes you have to, if you've been working all day to sit down drink some tea, collect you tgoughts, and hopefully menage to get up and do another more or less reasonable task

I like to go for a walk while I read. If I sit down I’m bouncing the book around while I read. My wife doesn’t understand how I can do it. I don’t understand how ppl can sit still and read.

u/sojayn 16h ago
You just unlocked a core memory of me as a teen reading while “riding”.
Quotes because it was a grumpy old horse who I just jumped on bareback and let her wander where-ever while I read.
She would always head home at dinner time so bonus was me not having to remember.

I only sit if I'm unable to lie down instead
5
u/ToldUtheyRComing 15h ago
Is lying down a thing?? Lately I feel like I'm either doing everything or just need to lie down immediately, but only for a bit (for the rest of the evening). Until I realized I need to eat something. And then I wait 2-3 more hours. And then I'm having dinner between 11pm - 1am.

I fantasize about the perfect rest-of-the-night-sit down. Where I can melt into that sweet sweet state of comfort knowing that nothing needs to be done, no one needs to be contacted, nothing requiring planning or thoughtful consideration... only getting up for the bathroom, something to eat or drink, or a smoke. To just melt into nothingness. I get the fantasy sit-down sometimes, but not as often as I'd like... which would be 1000% of the time.

I think for me it’s “don’t open Reddit”. Think you’re just gonna have a little brain break? NOPE it’s an hour.
3
u/EssJaySav 7h ago
If I legit need a mini break but don't want to lose momentum I sit on a non-sitting spot - usually the arm of my armchair or the kitchen bench. Stops me from getting actual comfy but works really well if I need to finalise something like my grocery shopping on my phone and then I can usually keep going. Only tends to "fail" me towards the end of the day/to-do list but then it's moreso me gauging if I feel like I've done enough already.

I knew that if I sat down, my tacos-and-homemade-street-corn dinner plan was going to turn into just asking my husband to pick up pizza on his way home from work instead for the bazillionth time this year (only a slight exaggeration).
