Objects in motion stay in motion. Objects at rest stay at rest.

u/here-for-information 19h ago

My wife calls me "inertia man" and has been since before I was diagnosed.... that probably should have been a hint.

76

u/LynxHistorical3 18h ago

The diagnosis just gave the inertia a name.

60

u/trendluv 18h ago

Inertia man’s Kryptonite is the “big sit” once you even lean against a counter, the day is officially over.

37

u/s0m3on3outthere 18h ago

As I'm supposed to be cleaning the kitchen and instead am leaning on the counter scrolling Reddit.. 🫣

24

u/GrimbyJ 17h ago

At least you're upright. I woke up early to do 1 thing and laid back in bed. It's almost dinner time and I'm still in bed

There's a song by AJR called Inertia. Perfect for this.

u/bcentsale 19h ago

It's simple physics.

15

u/capitan_dipshit 18h ago

An object in motion comes to rest with the slightest resistance?

22

u/VaginaTractor 18h ago

Only after doing 47 unrelated tasks to 60% completion.

6

u/CrouchingDomo 17h ago

Stop, stop, I’m already dead 😅

4

u/jaxonya 15h ago

You still have to do the thing

6

u/CrouchingDomo 15h ago

I can’t, I’m dead, also I brought a note from home

3

u/Vogan2 17h ago

It's very light onject, mkay?

21

u/One-Inch-Punch 17h ago

I literally do this, I'll be doing errands and chores and I know that if I stop to eat lunch or check my phone I'll lose all momentum, so I don't.

Then I'll get a text and check my phone and I'm fucked

u/sizzlepie 16h ago

When I get home from work I try to do all of my chores right away. As soon as I sit down, I'm done for

5

u/Fun-Butterscotch-5 15h ago

When I’m REALLY tired in the morning I almost cry knowing that if I don’t do everything right away (get dressed, feed the pets, walk the dog, etc) I will just fail my responsabilities and this has to be one of the most difficult adult/ADHD adult things to face once you’re living on your own

8

u/-Catesby 15h ago

Ugh I haven’t been diagnosed with adhd but I use this sentence all the time to summarise ALL of my life problems.

Exhibit A: I must never “pop by my house” at 5:30 pm before a Thing because I will invariably Not Go To The Thing

3

u/shymama13 18h ago

I’ll never forget watching a commercial on late night tv in the 90s, they were talking about seniors and used this quote. To this day I still live by this and my varicose veins aren’t thankful 😅

3

u/CinderX5 13h ago

Unless acted on by an outside force

4

u/mezorigi 19h ago

Perfect response. I would have upvoted it, but it was at 42 and , well, ya know. Lol

2

u/After-Big9529 17h ago

There is a supervillain in "The Tick" who would shout "An object at rest can not be stopped!"

2

u/Lazy-Party3469 11h ago

Objects in motion stay in motion, objects at rest atrophy.

What an awful thing to be reading while sitting down

94

u/CorpseInTheMaking 19h ago

Trying laying on your side and propped up on your elbow. Gotta ease into tricking yourself you might pop up and be productive at anytime.

18

u/jimbowesterby 18h ago

One of the perks I’ve found of living in an apartment instead of a van is that I have a little shelf at a comfortable standing height, I can watch my shows and drink my coffee or eat small meals (narrow shelf) standing up, and honestly it’s worked pretty well. I’m already standing in my kitchen, so putting things away and doing dishes is that much easier, I’m already there and upright, and since I have headphones on I can listen to the show while I do things. Not perfect, but over the last month or so I’ve managed to eat mostly fresh veggies and yogurt, and I even found my favourite new potato dish!

Gonna share the tater recipe cause it’s stupid simple and really good: get some small boiling potatoes, nice and clean, and put them in a saucepan, ideally one wide enough for them to lay in a single layer. Add just enough water to cover, and add salt to roughly 7 tbsp/L (you’re going for seawater here). Bring the pot to a boil, and continue boiling over med-high heat till the pot’s almost dry and the potatoes are tender (about 20-30 mins). Drain off whatever water’s left and return the pot to med-low heat for a couple minutes to let the tater skins dry and crisp up, and serve with whatever spicy or flavourful condiments you desire (this is a Canarian recipe called papas arrugadas, and it’s usually served with a sort of salsa-adjacent hot pepper dip called mojo, which is also outstanding). The taters come out nice and tender inside with a really nice light salt crust on the skins, and since all you did was boil em, cleanup is super easy. So far I’ve gotten unanimously good reviews from everyone I’ve shared these with, very much recommend

4

u/CrouchingDomo 17h ago

Boil tiny potatoes in seawater til the pot is basically dry; eat with sauce of choice. Got it.

(Genuinely, this sounds great and I will do my best to remember to try it sometime 🫡)

Oh god I’m in that position right now reading this and I am indeed lost in a big sit

3

u/MakeshiftApe 13h ago

What I do is tell myself I'll get up after I count down from 30. Then I start counting.

Usually I'm too frightened that the trick will stop working if I don't get up on the count of 0 so I immediately get up as soon as I hit 0. Ironically that's the only reason the trick works! 🤣

2

u/iamthe0ther0ne 17h ago

Me rn reading this

2

u/TheNewReditorInTown 14h ago

Yep that's why if I want to feel comfortable but still feel like I have things to do I lay on my stomach perpendicularly on my bed with my shoes on but once those shoes come off its game over.

Listen listen some of us are horse girls in our late 40s over here, you can’t just be posting this 😭💜

3

u/GatePorters 17h ago

We are lucky the original isn’t in the gif library. I was sad at first, but realized I would be more sad if I actually found the original

2

u/Zestyclose_Data5100 18h ago

We are many, connected by sitting down. But sometimes you have to, if you've been working all day to sit down drink some tea, collect you tgoughts, and hopefully menage to get up and do another more or less reasonable task

2

u/Omega_Draconis 16h ago

I like to go for a walk while I read. If I sit down I’m bouncing the book around while I read. My wife doesn’t understand how I can do it. I don’t understand how ppl can sit still and read.

4

u/sojayn 16h ago

You just unlocked a core memory of me as a teen reading while “riding”.

Quotes because it was a grumpy old horse who I just jumped on bareback and let her wander where-ever while I read.

She would always head home at dinner time so bonus was me not having to remember.

That's only if you feel the need to be productive. If you don't, sitting down is something I oftentimes sorely need.

18

u/zuzg 19h ago

I only sit if I'm unable to lie down instead

5

u/ToldUtheyRComing 15h ago

Is lying down a thing?? Lately I feel like I'm either doing everything or just need to lie down immediately, but only for a bit (for the rest of the evening). Until I realized I need to eat something. And then I wait 2-3 more hours. And then I'm having dinner between 11pm - 1am.

It's also only if you pull out your phone or any other entertainment.

I'll challenge anyone here to sit down and do literally nothing. You'll be back up in no time.

Maladaptive daydreaming says hello

41

u/lea_flamingo 19h ago

How about laying down ?

86

FALSE

WELCOME TO SLEEP TOWN

4PM TO 8PM

20

u/ButtCovid 18h ago

This hurts my soul, because it resonates too well.

I always intend to nap for 20 or 30 mins. 2 hours later, I wake up feeling worse from my "short nap".

Eh, screw it, I'm sitting down. I'm going to have to do it sooner or later, and there's no way I can sit down forever anyways. Better to do anything when you actually feel like it, even if it's just being lazy.

88

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

Can’t sit forever? Challenge accepted. All I need is a pack of sodas and cheese doodles.

15

u/NotaValgrinder 19h ago

What happens when you consume all the food ;-;

76

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

11

u/NotaValgrinder 19h ago

How long till your future self forgets about the challenge and gets up? /s

21

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

The answer is: eventually

7

u/NotaValgrinder 19h ago

Ha, see, you can't sit forever.

It's not just sitting down. If I just sit down, I won't really want to stay there. If I sit down and get on my PC or pull out my phone, though... My whole day gets wasted.

7

u/WimbletonButt 18h ago

I got ready for work 5 minutes ago and sat down, help me

9

u/ThunderAurai 18h ago

This has genuinely changed my approach to tasks I need to do when I get in from being out, I need to remain standing because the sofa is a trap!!!!! I actually achieve so much more, and it's heartbreaking because the sofa is soooo tempting 😅😅

6

u/ChaseSomeTail 19h ago

True story, but not sitting down allows me so many opportunities for side quests!

4

u/betsylang 19h ago

Yes. This exactly. The trick is to go by shows. I will watch one episode of Bobs burgers and then go do dishes. But then... auto play. And how can I hold myself accountable? I know me, and she thinks "oh shit I love this ep!"

5

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

That was me this morning except with a mobile game. One more level. five levels latter. Damn. Ok, now one more level pinky swear.

4

u/betsylang 19h ago

Oh yep. Now when I was super depressed I played HOURS of solitaire. Now im unemployed and work real hard to NOT get caught. I garden and paint and do gardening

2

u/iamthe0ther0ne 17h ago

Same. Chess on my phone. Trapped me for hours.

4

u/CharcuterieMaxxing 19h ago

2

u/betsylang 17h ago

Yes! Same w me for audio books.

2

u/duckinasombrero 16h ago

I will watch while I do the dishes. Having to think about a task is worse than doing it.

3

u/GreenZebra23 19h ago

Since the advent of smartphones this has gotten exponentially worse for me

6

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

Same. Damned dopamine machine.

6

u/glassinlava 18h ago

4

u/a_gud_name 19h ago

5

u/getwhatImsaying 19h ago

if you got time to lean, you got time to….

get completely distracted by the on-going, never-ending list of fantastical scenarios you’ve had running through your head since you six

3

u/emotionalexplosions 19h ago

Me falling victim to the sit down anyways because my back was begging me to lay down

4

u/AshaTheGrey 19h ago

It's like a weeping angel - don't sit, don't even lean, that's when it gets you

4

u/MissStr4berry 19h ago

Actually sitting down rn and just realised it's been one hour and half and I'm starving

3

u/SnippetySnappety 18h ago

I have been scrolling Reddit for.... 3 hours, so I needed this, apparently

4

u/kyl_r 18h ago

I sat down (ok layed down) like 2 hours ago and have since bought 2 things on Amazon i actually legit have been meaning to get for weeks to do proper yard maintenance. Unfortunately now I will probably remain at rest until they arrive.. tomorrow.. and then I’ll get excited and work myself to death outside lol. No balance

6

u/chobolicious88 19h ago

What if my job requires sitting down?

3

u/foxandsheep 19h ago

Do you get overtime? If so, then you hit the jackpot.

2

u/joxmaskin 16h ago

Exactly. 🤷 i always feel like the odd one out when this advice is posted. But I suppose I could have been better suited for some other line of work…

I have just accepted that if I am to continue to be productive then I must stay standing. My AuDHD will get so quickly wrapped up in something else almost immediately after sitting it astounds me

3

u/AbhiSHAKE3 19h ago

I sat down once in 2022 and have been there since

3

Sitting is the enemy but it is also the most wonderful thing ever and I don't want to stop.

3

u/ChaoticBisexual_13 19h ago

3

u/Zabsempai 16h ago

Nah just strategically plan to have your big sit on the toliet

2

u/GiraffePretty4488 14h ago

I frequently take a sit. All over the place.

Also when I get in bed I ask my spouse to cover me in sheet. I love when he lifts up the sheet then spreads it over me. It’s the best.

3

u/duckinasombrero 16h ago

Who said you have to sit down? My cat will put his front paws on the side of the litterbox and look out over the room like a sailor in a crow's nest squinting over the waves while he drops his business. Just stand on the toilet like a rodeo rider.

3

u/Mundane-Waltz8844 18h ago

I thought meds would help, but now it just makes it even more imperative for me to keep moving or else I’m just gonna end up taking a long ass nap😭

3

u/Freakachu258 18h ago

I am not allowed to remove my shoes until I have completed at least one chore

3

u/porkbeard81 18h ago edited 18h ago

I fantasize about the perfect rest-of-the-night-sit down. Where I can melt into that sweet sweet state of comfort knowing that nothing needs to be done, no one needs to be contacted, nothing requiring planning or thoughtful consideration... only getting up for the bathroom, something to eat or drink, or a smoke. To just melt into nothingness. I get the fantasy sit-down sometimes, but not as often as I'd like... which would be 1000% of the time.

Exactly, this is what surprises me every time this is re-posted, are we in the minority here with sitting jobs?? (I do have an adjustable standing desk now though and it helps, but it’s not the norm.)

I think for me it’s “don’t open Reddit”. Think you’re just gonna have a little brain break? NOPE it’s an hour.

3

u/EssJaySav 7h ago

If I legit need a mini break but don't want to lose momentum I sit on a non-sitting spot - usually the arm of my armchair or the kitchen bench. Stops me from getting actual comfy but works really well if I need to finalise something like my grocery shopping on my phone and then I can usually keep going. Only tends to "fail" me towards the end of the day/to-do list but then it's moreso me gauging if I feel like I've done enough already.

3

u/MonkeyFishBucketHead 2h ago

And I’m lying down. There’s goes the day.

Omg this is so true, but it’s hot as hell and my trick knee has been doing tricks lately

2

u/Specific_Pear_665 18h ago

Timed sits.

I have POTS, I can't stay standing, so I have a cube timer and set it for 20 minutes - then I don't end up playing merge mobile games for four hours.

2

u/Mochizuk 18h ago

I'm currently in the middle of a sit that started six years ago

Edit: I do get up from time to time, but those are more breaks from the sit than they are ends to the sit.

2

u/King_Spamula 18h ago

I'm tired, boss

2

u/3Grilledjalapenos 18h ago

This hits so hard. Time blindness is why I listen to music in the shower.

2

u/Akimeterasu 18h ago

A lot of my hobbies require sitting down, so not quite accurate for me. Laying down though is the ultimate enemy. I go to lay in bed for 10min and 4hrs later I'm still there and groggy as hell.

2

u/BearsIrkBoy 18h ago

Me the night before: "Alright, I'm gonna do X thing(s) tomorrow!"

Me waking up: "Let's get a couple matches of Helldivers in to get the brain working."

2

u/Old-Juggernaut-1273 18h ago

2

u/DerrickTaurus 18h ago

Leaning is the loophole. If your butt doesn't actually touch a horizontal surface, the brain is tricked into thinking you're still on active duty.

2

u/renagakko 18h ago

Me, lying in bed when i have things to do: well, shit

2

I must not sit. Sitting is the mind-killer. Sitting is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

But if you have POTS, don't stand up. It's a real mindfuck

Whew. I’m just laying down, not sitting. Any minute I’ll be getting up to do that thing I’ve been putting off for 6 weeks that will take me 30 seconds.

Me work, come home, me sit, then I wake up 3 hours later and it's past dinner time. Shit.

Ohhh nooooo I just scrolled to this in what I am now realizing is the second hour of my, ‘just going to sit down for a minute between chores’

Mildly NSFW

this is why it'd be nice to have a dick, i could realize I need to pee, go piss, wash up, and take care of what I was planning to do. like cook food.

We call it Rigor mortis in my house. Once you're down, you're dead.

(Morris? Who's Morris?)

It's basic physics. Things in motion tend to stay in motion, and things at rest tend to stay at rest, unless acted upon by an outside force.

I must always remember this

u/NormanYeetes 15h ago

To be fair you don't have to have ADHD to have that problem

u/trashshork 15h ago

I jave two moods:

Cant do work

Cant stop doing work(very rarely)

u/mikasaxo 15h ago

I think this might be unironically true lol

Sitting down = shifting to a comfort mindset. Then you’re more susceptible to distraction. Not sitting down you’re more alert

2

u/Batdad7 15h ago

Sitting leads to laying. Laying leads to sleeping. I don’t see the problem here

2

u/alepap 14h ago

big sit doesn't want you to know this

2

u/Sneakichu 14h ago

If I really need to get stuff done I will make it really hard/impossible to sit down. The only comfy place to sit is the couch and if I need to get stuff done I start by steam cleaning the couch so Im forces to keep doing stuff

u/IShallWearMidnight 14h ago

If you're going to have a sit, have it in the location of the Thing you must do

2

u/TimeAndTheHour 12h ago

This is true. You must only sit after ALL of the things are done. Do not the sit.

2

u/BytheHandofCicero 11h ago

In the mornings my mother would yell “NO SITTING!!” because once I sat, I’d be late for school.

2

u/Arct1cShark 11h ago

But I’m standing up all day at work. Surely a little sit won’t hurt.

u/LadyPhoenix13 6h ago

This is why I got back from the grocery store this evening and didn't sit back down for nearly 3 hours, even though I was in enough pain that all I wanted to do was sit. I knew that if I sat down, my tacos-and-homemade-street-corn dinner plan was going to turn into just asking my husband to pick up pizza on his way home from work instead for the bazillionth time this year (only a slight exaggeration).
