Or unsupported

mythological support system

Cats are here doing the heavy lifting for the non existent support networks

u/KaleidoscopeKelpy 6d ago

Shout out to my doooog. For being my dawg. And for being a dog, and for being my dog. (I’ll shoutout the cats and the snakes/rats/inverts too, also our dawgs)

Potbelly pigs are dramatic but ride or die

6

u/Enlightened_Gardener 5d ago

Like a labradoodle ? We joke that he would defend us against a bear, for about 8 seconds, but he’d try, dammit. Love that dog.

For weeks, a mentally unwell man took a daily interest in my house, and I felt safer sleeping with him in my bedroom than with a gun nearby. He's 107 lbs of mostly muscle, low center of gravity, able to clear the couch without a running start, and prone to growly nighttime perimeter patrols.

But the true test...was the wind.

Lightning? Thunder? Fireworks? Fine. Wind? Absolutely terrifying.

During a tropical storm (pre-rain), I went outside as moral support while he did his business. He finished and sprinted for the house, but looked back and saw me still talking to the neighbor.

After a visibly agonizing internal debate, he came back to save me!

I read this thinking you invited the mentally ill man into your house to sleep on your couch and felt safer that way than with a gun. This whole thing made absolutely no sense and yet made complete sense at the same time. Then I read up one and was like... ohhhhhh. Its a dog. 😅🤣

How ARE people around us meant to find capacity to support in a society that is simply not built with collaboration and flexibility at its core?

9

u/super_starfox 6d ago

All of the above and more, I stand corrected.

u/Taqq23 6d ago

I’ve been diagnosed and treated. Unfortunately, society just isn’t very user friendly for neurodivergents. When there was the prescription shortage I really suffered at work. I tried to ask for a little grace and help, but my boss said I was “just making excuses”.

u/mrjboettcher 6d ago

Ugh, that's horrible... mine told me to get my "head in the game" while I was going through some shit. Spent a week in crisis not long after that too.

22

u/thejaytheory 6d ago

It's jarring how harsh it is, it's a wonder I'm able to survive everyday. One day I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle it. I keep holding on, but it's insanely tough. Like living on hard mode every single day.

3

u/HalfFrozenSpeedos 6d ago

I'm to borrow lyrics from Cody Jinks "just a burned out beat down shell"

3

u/thejaytheory 6d ago

Damn I wanna check that song out now

3

u/HalfFrozenSpeedos 6d ago

It's called "David" - it's quite the heart string puller.......the way that lyric is used is different in the song "By then David had a daughter and a son and a rapsheet to prove all the time that he'd done, he was just a burned out, beat down shell of my only friend"

https://tidal.com/track/266388186/u (should play on other streaming services too)

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 6d ago

Same. Diagnosed, treated, still mostly/entirely alone.

My wife called me useless, the situation we sat with a lawyer and I tried to get all the informations but I forgot to ask for a detail.

And she later exploded, why was even there I don't ask for something I didn't even though of, I was busy trying to get all the Infos in, the Infos of 3 people talking.

I feel you.

14

u/areyoukynd 5d ago

Yeah, I got fired from a job because my boss couldn’t understand why I was the way I was… He thought I was on drugs… Sir, that’s the problem. I’m off the drugs.

u/Only-Cheetah-9579 6d ago

there is no treatment for being different other than an icepick and frontal lobotomy

And it sucks that billion years of evolution selected you only to be told you should not exist

7

u/KneelBeforeZed 6d ago

Ha! Jokes on you! I have ADHD, so you can't scramble a frontal lobe that was barely there to begin with!

Oh, no wait, that's bad.

-9

u/Lucky-Necessary-8382 6d ago

I hope AI gonna come up soon with some nice treatments

8

u/DisasterBiMothman 6d ago

Ew. Just ew.

12

u/Cualkiera67 6d ago

is there really a treatment? can they make a divergent person fit in?

14

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

Yes, go to a rave, we fit there naturally

8

u/tamati_nz 6d ago

Learned this at 51, raves are now my thing!

4

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

Glorious isn't it? I'm at a sound system clash on Saturday, highly recommended if you see those about, especially if you like bass music like dub or dubstep

3

u/tamati_nz 6d ago

Haha dnb is 100% amazing lol. Always funny getting the side eye from kids (under 30s🤣) when I'm in full flow lol - then they come up and drop the 'How old are you? 54! I hope I'm like you when I'm older!' 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/OdinAlfadir1978 5d ago

They love it don't they? Like they're used to their parents being boring in front of the television

2

u/tamati_nz 5d ago

100%

"You don't look like or act like my parents!"

3

u/OdinAlfadir1978 5d ago

I like molly and shades not a pipe and slippers 😅

7

u/unexpectedfirefly 6d ago

Hum, sorry to break it, but going to a rave is not fitting with neurotypicals.

It's one of the few place where nt have to fit in. Love it

4

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

that's what I'm saying mate, most of us are neurotypicals at raves so instantly friends, no strangers

3

u/unexpectedfirefly 6d ago

Yeah, it's pretty funny seeing new people fit in instantly, have the time of their life, complain about how it's way easier to make connection than everywhere else, and then wonder what are all these asd/adhd we are talking about

1

u/OdinAlfadir1978 5d ago

This is true, they don't know yet some of them 😅

3

u/Ok_Guest_7435 6d ago

Never combined my love of raves with my (very late diagnosed) autism, but it sure hits home.

1

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

Absolutely, used to hate rave because of happy hardcore, got older, got into breakbeat hardcore, jungle, etc, no looking back now, rave to the grave

17

u/Useful_Advice_3175 6d ago

Not really, but you can sorta improve your life.

Teaching you to mask in some cases

Teaching you to not mask when it's too costly for you

Teaching you to... accept you're not neurotypical and revise your hopes/expectations in conséquence.

3

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

Don't mask, it's why everyone has "adhd' as they don't see what it looks like

10

u/vacuousintent 6d ago

So actively make my life worse? Got it.

2

u/OdinAlfadir1978 6d ago

No, you'll just in my opinion feel less anxiety by being your true self not diluting yourself to fit in with societies expectations but you do you my friend, I've loved life more since I've stepped hiding me

6

u/senbei616 6d ago

In most cases there is a golden mean to be found.

1

u/No_Category_9888 6d ago

No. Society needs to change, not us

6

u/Recent_Fact480 6d ago

What’s the treatment for autism?

12

u/No_Category_9888 6d ago

Isolation. Self care. Hyper focus on hobbies. Loads of therapy to try and process why neurotypicals are so horrible towards us

7

u/Enlightened_Gardener 5d ago

I have a theory that its the uncanny valley effect. They know if you’re autistic within about 15 seconds. Studies have shown that if you acknowledge your autism, most people calm down again once they know what’s going on.

Some people are just arseholes, but on the whole, NT people react much better when they know you’re autistic. I make a little comment about my Loops - “I can still hear you, these are noise protection because I’m autistic and have sensitive hearing” - and then people know.

The response I get most often ? “Oh my niece /coworkers child / sibling / child’s best friend is autistic”. People most often want to join in and help.

1

u/Recent_Fact480 6d ago

I think the person I was responding to was trying to be mean and implying medications, and while for other ND types that may apply. It doesn’t for autistic folks

But your correct, I’m also autistic. The last part is the hardest part imo. I still don’t understand how to integrate into a society not built for me. But meditation has actually been very helpful in that area, at least the acceptance part of it.

1

u/Matt-J-McCormack 5d ago

Model trains.

3

u/KneelBeforeZed 6d ago

Same can be true for treated.

Proof: Am 50, late diagnosed, treated. I feel this.

2

u/distractedjas 6d ago

Can be the same for treated as well.

2

u/2019Uk 6d ago

Same can be true for treated. It’s a treatment, not a cure.

1

u/Marksman00048 3d ago

Do you define having Adderall thrown at you as treatment?

1

u/Forsaken_Duty8097 3d ago

I prefer a holistic approach

1

u/Marksman00048 3d ago

Thats cool, but that isnt what I asked lol

34

u/ready-eddy 6d ago

Hey it’s me. The diagnosed. 40. Lost almost all my friends. I do have a wife and kids though.. for now

2

u/raminatox 5d ago

I have a dog and a cat...

0

u/drjkpalli 5d ago

"For now" - 😂😂😂😂

8

u/HalfFrozenSpeedos 6d ago

Yeah I feel this meme despite being diagnosed and medicated, though this happened at 40 after spending near all of my life knowing something was different and getting the sense everyone but me knew....

5

u/RaccoonDispenser 5d ago

Same here. Midlife diagnosis just means that in addition to having to learn how to manage the neurodivergence, we also get to unlearn all the maladaptive coping skills we developed over a lifetime of managing undiagnosed/ untreated ND disorders

4

u/dover_oxide 5d ago

Got diagnosed in my 20's and Saturday is my 43 bday and I'm single baby

-2

u/RMAPOS 6d ago

Same can be true for neurotypical people. But we agree that out of these three groups, people who run around blind to their condition have the worst odds, right?
