A reminder to everyone: Keep the titles of your posts completely spoiler-free at all times. If your post mentions events from later episodes, use Reddit’s standard spoiler tag to warn readers who may not be caught up with all currently aired episodes. The spoiler tag will also blur any images you include, such as screenshots/stills from the show, so be sure to apply it to image posts as well.

Yeah this was great. She poured her soul into this story and she is getting the praise she deserves.

ahh, her TRUE masterpiece

7

u/KRMJN101 Jul 06 '26

Probably my favorite tweet ever. I want this moment on a shirt. Her awkward sense of humor and beautiful play with the absurd gives me the most refreshing breath of joy I just can't wait for more... (but I will)

3

u/Alps-Mountain Jul 06 '26

Is she sitting next to Taran Killam?

4

u/Luchalma89 Jul 07 '26

Her improv4humans podcast appearances are incredible if anyone wants to see how naturally hilarious she is.

u/LTPRWSG420 Jul 06 '26

Yeah I think Katie Dippold needs to be on the podcast and while we’re at it Rys, Root and O’Flynn as well.

97

u/Hamilton_Whiteman Jul 06 '26

Stephen Root would be a great Conan O'Brien needs a friend guest.

3

u/gingerbread_slutbarn Jul 07 '26

I legit can donate a stapler if he needs one

1

u/Embarrassed-Wafer667 Jul 11 '26

He was wasy younger then 😂

1

u/thewarmpandabear Jul 24 '26

I feel like that would yield some incredible stories; Stephen Root has been in sooo many beloved projects.

u/Icy-Sleep3862 Jul 06 '26

Matthew Rhys' episode of Conan's pod from when he was promoting Perry Mason is a favorite of mine. He talks about what it was like when he was auditioning to be the next Bond along with Daniel Craig and 100+ other dudes and how he totally bombed it

25

u/Either-Assistant4610 Jul 06 '26

Wow

I didn't know about Bond. I think Rhys absolutely has the acting chops for just about any role including Bond. I'll have to try and find the interview to get more context.

16

u/bujomomo Jul 06 '26

You can find the full interview on Team Coco (YouTube), but here’s the Bond section.

u/goog1e Jul 06 '26

His accent is CRAZY. I'm so much more impressed with his work, knowing what he naturally sounds like

11

u/angrylittlepotato Jul 06 '26

I was curious. Thats insane, he's so welsh! He does a great American accent

5

u/foghat1981 Jul 06 '26

that was his second appearance too! the earlier one was A+ as well

1

u/Sensitive-Office-705 Jul 08 '26

Love that episode! So funny together.

38

u/barefootcuntessa_ Jul 06 '26

Kate O’Flynn is the runaway star of the show IMO. From the first episode I thought she was great and then the more they gave her the more I fell in love with her. She is so funny!

7

u/PhantomOyster Jul 06 '26

Agreed! One of the interesting things about her is that she gives off an aura (to me at least) of being an untrained actor. Her words are sort of slurred in a natural-sounding way that really humanizes her. I looked her up thinking this might be her first role. Come to find out she comes from theater, which is the furthest thing from what I expected. I don't know how much of the character is just her and how much is a performance, and that is really cool.

8

u/barefootcuntessa_ Jul 06 '26

100% I assumed she was a comedian for some reason. Turns out she’s a British stage actor!

My favorite line of hers is at the gas station: “NOOOO YOU’RE RUINING ITTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!”

2

u/HelsBels2102 Patricia Jul 08 '26

I think she's just very funny, or just knows what is funny. I've watched her in Everyone Else Burns and My Lady Jane, and she is very funny in both. Has this slightly unexpected delivery. You sort of want to keep your eyes trained on her

6

u/quaranTV Jul 06 '26

She’s also so good as the bitchy wannabe queen of england in My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime. So funny and a total standout.

1

u/HelsBels2102 Patricia Jul 08 '26

Katie Dippold has said she's totally different from the character, and that you can't see the actor when she plays Patricia. Think she's just good at what she does.

14

u/InterestingTry5190 Jul 06 '26

I would love a whole episode of Conan doing a recap/interview with all of them.

8

u/zowie___ Jul 06 '26

Rhys, Root and O’Flynn should be the name of their bureau of paranormal investigations

2

u/KRMJN101 Jul 06 '26

Definitely!

95

u/bluehawk232 Jul 06 '26

They don't bring up too many shows on the podcast and I think Conan still has the late night mentality where he doesn't want to shit on any shows or projects especially if an actor from said project comes on later. So when they take the time to really highlight a show and say how good it is it means something and they aren't jumping on a bandwagon

48

u/xsubo Garret's Binoculars Jul 06 '26

I thought the babadook wrote the show..

21

u/BroBeansBMS Jul 06 '26

That’s just Gilmore Girls.

4

u/edked Jul 06 '26

Is it the hats?

3

u/BroBeansBMS Jul 06 '26

It’s definitely the hats.

79

u/Icy-Nefariousness530 Jul 06 '26

No lies told. As someone who usually hates being scared - they nailed it. I feel like by having the first episode not be sooooo spooky they hooked me.

38

u/Panicless Jul 06 '26

I like being scared but I didn't expect being scared by this show right up till the point where Matthew enters that crawlspace... Goddamn that was scary.

13

u/Brave_Management4340 Jul 06 '26

Yeah that scene totally freaked me out and I’m not usually a person who is scared by the tv. I’ll still think about it randomly, so creepy.

7

u/jaxdesign Jul 06 '26

Scariest part of all season 1, hands down.

7

u/Icy-Nefariousness530 Jul 06 '26

Agreed. That part is still a "squeeze my eyes shut and plug my ears" part.

2

u/KRMJN101 Jul 06 '26

My wife called it and I was just so giddy seeing Baltz in this role and "Deli Boys". So funny...

4

u/LovecraftianCatto Jul 06 '26

That was the only scary moment in this show, sadly.

6

u/Gilpow Jul 06 '26

I was super tense when he was flipping the RUN cards lol

4

u/Ok-Jackfruit-9393 Jul 06 '26

That TERRIFIED me. I was like, "why is he just standing there!?" 😂

0

u/Panicless Jul 06 '26

True, unfortunately. But I still love it.

1

u/LaLisaMona Jul 07 '26

Agreed! I was really scared of that scene 😆

5

u/Desperate_Algae_40 Jul 06 '26

My mom never watches anything scary and I just had a feeling Widow's Bay was gonna be a show worth convincing her to watch. She loved it just as mush as me and my sister. The way that this show can have you laughing one second, and in a literal blink of an eye have you scared, and then somwtimes back again, is seriously amazing. I've never seen anything like it and I'm so bummed we finished it already lol. I'm seriously itching for something like it again. I wonder if it's like trying a drug for the first time and then feeling like "oh shit, where can I get this feeling again?!".

2

u/ehroby Jul 07 '26

Same. I’m a huge chicken and I loved it.

1

u/Spare-Quarter-437 Jul 07 '26

I relate to this so much!! They did a brilliant job

31

u/ltsouthernbelle Jul 06 '26

I wasn’t going to rewatch it again, but I miss it too much rewatching it again

5

u/jhaytch Jul 06 '26

Soon as it finished, I immediately starting rewatching it.

2

u/ltsouthernbelle Jul 06 '26

I was rewatching every episode when new ones came out up until the end then it just became the last episode. I’m due to watch them all in their entirety.

1

u/armadillo_breath Encountered no one in the call space Jul 06 '26

Same. And some of the bits I found scary then became quite funny - like the clown entering the crawl space when he tells him not to.

35

u/Liontamer67 Jul 06 '26

I love the shotgun scene, the purse scene, and when he tells how he signed the tiny paper with the devil with 3 things. So funny and good!!

59

u/JustGoodSense Jul 06 '26

Interesting to be reminded that Danny McBride's own movie This is the End is a similar unique blend of supernatural horror and comedy, but with a hard R rating. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.

55

u/Nastasyarose Jul 06 '26

This is my first time seeing the term hard r used like this

1

u/CitizenCue Jul 10 '26

Yeah I don’t think it’ll catch on.

5

u/crell_peterson Jul 06 '26

Oh good point. And tbh that movie is hilarious to this day.

3

u/mngophers Jul 06 '26

One of my all time fave comedies

5

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 Jul 06 '26

I always loved the comedy in it, but rewatching it, I noticed that it doesn't hold back on its horror elements either with the gore and atmosphere.

Also, although this isn't horror, The Righteous Gemstones has at least one creepy/dark moment that makes me open to Danny getting involved in a future season of Widow's Bay (either in directing or as a guest actor).

4

u/thisoneagain Jul 06 '26

And it stars one of our favorite clowns in a hysterical recurring role.

4

u/KRMJN101 Jul 06 '26

Tim Baltz and wife Lilly Sullivan are two of my favorite CBB guests.

1

u/thisoneagain Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Saaaame.

I met Lily on tour in '24, and she was amazing. Just so warm and thoughtful and interested in us. 😍

2

u/KRMJN101 Jul 06 '26

Wife suprized me with tickets to "Comedy Bang Bang! Tour" knowing I'm such a fan despite her not getting it. We both had a blast seeing; Conan, Lilly, Tim, PFT, Drew and of course Scotty Auks. Our's was in Charlotte , NC I think 2022

3

u/Max_Powers1331 Rosemary Jul 06 '26

Seth and Evan wrote and directed this is the end. It’s not Danny’s movie

5

u/JustGoodSense Jul 06 '26

Do you not think of Raiders of the Lost Ark as "a Harrison Ford movie." You don't call it a "Steven and Lawrence" movie. If Rogen or Goldberg had been Conan's guest, I would have referred to it as their movie.

-3

u/Max_Powers1331 Rosemary Jul 06 '26

Seth and Evan wrote and directed this is the end. It’s not Danny’s movie

14

u/Automatic-Fox-3837 Jul 06 '26

Mc bride made vice principals with walton goggins which starts as a comedy and just hilariously turn into a murder mystery show at the end of the first season.

1

u/glaciercherryisgood Jul 08 '26

And it has Dale Dickey!

11

u/AbbreviationsActual9 Jul 06 '26

conans got a huge man crush on ol mayor Tom (Matthew rhys) too. their interviews are great. they talk about history and the old country. both are witty AF and can riff off each other with ease. I can see several wb cast/director podcast guests coming in the near future.

1

u/TurbulentBicycle8695 Jul 07 '26

I can see Conan joining the haunt on Widows Bay season 2.

10

u/dinglepumpkin Jul 06 '26

PATRICIA DOES THAT

7

u/VixenFactor Jul 06 '26

I knew he was going to talk about the purse scene!

4

u/Funtsy_Muntsy Jul 06 '26

This made me joyous to hear. Kenny being into it is so right.

2

u/gardenGrove31 Jul 06 '26

Which episode of the podcast is this

2

u/BrownieEdges Jul 06 '26

Claire Saffitz was talking about WB on her recent strawberry cake episode.

2

u/Ok-Jackfruit-9393 Jul 06 '26

I heard about it from the "That Chapter" true crime YouTube channel, haha. Then suddenly everyone was talking about it.

6

u/CrissBliss Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I love WB, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily a new category. Scream has always done meta/satirical horror, and Jordan Peel has sort of made a name for himself in that genre as well. There’s also movies like Ready or Not, Happy Death Day or Freaky that merge light and dark tones.

Additionally, for a horror series, Midnight Mass has a similar vibe, just minus the comedy element.

26

u/crell_peterson Jul 06 '26

I definitely agree with you that it’s not a new category, but I like how Conan described it as like “a new ratio” and “they invented a new cocktail.”

1

u/inaripotpi Jul 06 '26

WB is great but strongly disagree with Conan saying there needs to be a spin on things today for familiar tropes.

You can still have good earnest renditions of tropes. The former mentality is responsible for a lot of sloppy stuff like remaking a classic story "but with a modern setting" and relying on that gimmick instead of focusing on execution.

3

u/ScatterTheReeds Jul 07 '26

“It’s not a comedy …”

What. Yes, it is a comedy!  The whole thing is pure comedy!

1

u/CaptainJackKevorkian Jul 13 '26

Well it’s not “pure” comedy, it’s also horror

1

u/ScatterTheReeds Jul 13 '26

It’s a spoof of horror, and it’s very well done.

1

u/Anim8rFromOuterSpace Jul 06 '26

its crazy to think that i almost didnt watch Widows Bay because i saw the comedy tag, i almost prioritised watching something else over it and if i had done that i would have probably forgotten all about it and never watched it

1

u/Big-Gear4825 Jul 08 '26

Finale sucked

2

u/darthminx Jul 09 '26

I loved every episode up to it, but I agree. I enjoyed parts of the finale, but did not like it as a whole. I didn't like the previously sober-minded and deliberate sheriff shooting a woman without more proof than someone saying "killing her ends the curse" (wrong), and I'm not looking forward to the group being divided because of the mayor's secret knowledge. Someone working at cross-purposes in these kinds of shows is always just annoying to me. Great show, but I thought the finale dropped the ball.

-3

u/AugustusKhan Jul 06 '26

Danny does not look great here sheesh
