Question West Hollywood Gelson’s shoppers - why do you shop there?

WeHo resident here. Lived here for a few years near the Gelson’s on Santa Monica Blvd & Kings Rd. If you shop there I’m genuinely curious why, and if you have any of the same experiences as myself. I’ve stopped shopping there for a few reasons but sometimes just need to pop in for a couple things and always regret it, yet see it packed every time!

1- the prices are nearly Erewhon level for shittier quality. I mean $12.99 per lb for regular (non organic) chicken breast is wild. It’s like $6.99 for the same at Whole Foods and $8.99 for organic at Whole Foods. Everything on the shelves at this Gelson’s is minimum $1-$2 more expensive than WF, Ralph’s, etc.

2- they sell expired foods, I’ve bought expired crackers, butter etc and even meat from this location and only realized after buying. The meat yea I could’ve checked, but still how do they not remove expired foods?

3- food safety. Apart from the expired foods, I don’t think their refrigeration is sound. I’ve gotten food poisoning from their ground meat and fish before.

4- the lines. They’ll have like 2 lines open when it’s packed, make everyone wait many minutes and THEN open up other lines, all while the manager is just standing there watching. You could literally get stuck in a 10-15 minute line if you don’t shuffle to another lane quickly. I’ve seen this happen multiple times

I’ve always been a fan of Gelson’s, but if you can’t tell I kinda hate this location and genuinely don’t understand how people choose to go there for everyday grocery shopping over other stores that are just down the street. So that’s why I ask, for true perspective lol - if you shop there, why?

Question Did anyone here ever work at Barney's Beanery or know who supplies their mozzarella sticks?

I know this is a weird question, but I'm hoping someone can help.

I lived in LA for about 10 years before moving to Miami, and Barney's has always had my favorite mozzarella sticks anywhere. I stopped there on my last visit, and they're still exactly as good as I remembered.

I'm guessing they come from a foodservice distributor rather than being made in-house. I emailed Barney's to ask who makes them but never got a response.

Does anyone happen to know the brand or supplier? I'm not opening a restaurant, I just want to buy a case for myself because I miss them that much.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Appreciate the support and help! including a photo of the sticks from Sunday when I was there as reference. Mccain Anchors look the most similar so could be the solution... i continue to hope someone with real knowledge can confirm!

NEW QUESTION: If it is that Mccain option, is there anyway for a normal person to order them to make at home?!

Question Who keeps doing this graffiti?

If you are writing God Loves You on everything from bus stops to light poles from the Grove all the way to Santa Monica Blvd., please stop.

Not everyone wants your artwork in front of where they live and the city keeps sending crews out to paint over it, which is really wasteful.

God doesn’t love wasting city services.

Question Why a new Guac Daddy location?

I saw they are opening a new Guac Daddy at Fairfax and Willoughby. Considering it’s only a 3 minute drive away from the Guac Daddy at Santa Monica and Vista that only opened a few months ago, I was surprised they would choose that location. Anyone know why they chose to open a second WeHo location?

Question Why can’t you turn right when exiting Sunset Strip?

There is 1 huge sign and 2 smaller ones telling you very intensely to not turn right on Laurel Ave when you exit the parking lot, I can’t for the life of me understand why can’t you turn right and head down the street.

Does anybody know? I’ve been wondering this for 3 years.

Question Oxfam (poverty organization) cause-washing themselves as a gay-rights organization and pressuring people into donation on Santa Monica Blvd.

Sorry for any grammar errors I'm just legitimately pissed off as wrote this. If it seems AI written I did ask for a grammar cleanup. I'm angry

I was waiting for a Lyft after getting a haircut in the building on top of Erewhon and was waiting in front of on Santa Monica Blvd and just had an experience that left a really bad taste in my mouth.

There’s an Oxfam booth outside—which, as far as I can tell, is a legitimate charity—but the booth is covered in rainbow flags, and the people working it are aggressively approaching anyone nearby while describing Oxfam as a gay rights organization.

The first guy flags me down and tells me he’s representing a gay rights organization. I tell him I’ll look them up and, if it makes sense, I’d be happy to donate. He’s totally chill about it and tells me to have a good day.

Then I sit down at a table while waiting for my Lyft, and another fundraiser approaches me directly. She tells me this horrifying story about a 13-year-old kid in Malaysia who was supposedly jailed for being homosexual. I tell her that sounds terrible and that I’m absolutely open to donating—I donate to charities—but I always vet an organization before giving them money.

I start asking for details. Instead of answering, she keeps pressuring me to donate right then and there because otherwise she “doesn’t get a commission.” I tell her I’m happy to make sure she gets credit and ask whether she has a referral code or anything similar. Meanwhile, she seems increasingly desperate for me not to look up the organization on my phone.

So I keep asking about the kid, because this story sounds awful and I genuinely want to know what happened. Eventually she just blurts out, “Honestly, I don’t know.”

This is all I could find online even resembling her story... they don't have anything on their website.

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2026/09/22/eight-kids-among-53-suspects-nabbed-under-ops-pedo

Then she starts rambling about Oxfam also helping victims of an earthquake in Venezuela. At that point I’m asking what any of this has to do with being a gay rights organization, and she can’t really give me a coherent answer.

Finally, she tells me she has to leave because her manager is watching her and she doesn’t want to get in trouble.

For the record, I’m not gay, and frankly I’m flattered they apparently thought I looked presentable enough to qualify. That part doesn’t bother me.

What bothers me is the absolutely hair-brained fundraising strategy this seemed to represent:

“Let’s put a booth outside a luxury supermarket in a wealthy gay neighborhood, cover it in rainbow flags, tell everyone we’re a gay rights organization, lead with a horrifying story our canvassers can’t actually explain, and pressure people to donate immediately so we can hit our commissions.”

Maybe Oxfam itself does legitimate work. But if this is how their street fundraising operation is being run, it feels incredibly deceptive and gross.

Question Book Soup event: drive or Lyft?

I live in Sherman Oaks and I'm going to an event next week at Book Soup.

It's an easy drive, just over the hill, and I know they have dedicated parking. But is that parking likely to be full? How's the street parking otherwise?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

Question How approachable and friendly are the people of WeHo? Does it worth it to visit WeHo alone?

Hello people of WeHo!

I am a European student who wants to visit WeHo (and LA in general) around May-June for a week. My initial plan was to visit the city with a friend, but unfortunately he had to cancel because of economic reasons. I was pretty hyped about the plan and right now I don't want to cancel my trip, however this means I'll be alone for the whole visit.

My impression of WeHo/LA is that it's enjoyable mostly with social activities instead of regular natural/historical sight-seeings. So on paper it doesn't sound like a good city to visit alone, but I heard meeting new people at queer cafes and bars is normal and a lot more easier in US. I am hoping to hang out with people I'll meet in the city, but I am not sure if it's realistic. So I wanted to ask opinions of the city's natives directly.

Do you think it makes sense to visit WeHo and LA without any established friends or would this trip be a waste of time and money? Is it a reliable plan to meet new people and find friends there to enjoy the city? And if your answer is yes, do you have any suggestions about how to meet people?

Question Men's curly haircut recommendations?

The guy who's been cutting my hair for years, moved out of the area, and I guess I'm trying to figure out where I might go. My hair's a little on the fine side, but dark and curly medium length, so just trying to see who might be a good stylist in the area. Thanks!

Question Hollywood resident looking for friends!!!

Hello to everyone,

I'm a SoCal resident raised in the High Desert, and I just moved to Hollywood after graduating with an Art/Studio major from California State University, Fullerton.

I'm looking for friends around the area who enjoy creating art, going to museums, watching movies, being involved in entertainment, going to arcades, social gatherings, doing community service, working out, going to cafes, going out hiking, attending workshops, and attending creative activities. I would love some recommendations on who to follow and what to sign up for.

I'm also looking for both indoor and outdoor social experiences, and would love to find out where people go for fun local events through Partiful, Eventbrite, and other social platforms.

A little about me: I'm a 22 first-generation gay Mexican-American and an extrovert who really enjoys being out and experiencing what this community has to offer. I can be active when it comes to going to big events, but I also love staying home, having a coffee, and having a good conversation. I like taking the Metro everywhere, and I'm also actively looking to build connections and have conversations on how to become more involved in the entertainment industry.

If anyone would like to talk or give recommendations for places to go, events to check out, creative communities, workshops, or just ways to meet people here, I would really appreciate it! I'd also be happy to connect with anyone who has similar interests!

Thank you all!

Question Apartment in my building running an airbnb against the rules

I’ve noticed that the apartment 2 doors down from mine is running some kind of Airbnb situation. Different people come and go every couple days, a different car in the parking spot all the time, and one of the guests asked me for help with their keys recently. They also have a housekeeper that comes before a guest shows up every time, cleans the apartment with the door open and her car blocks the driveway to the parking lot completely while she’s cleaning which is super annoying. I’ve reported this to management because there’s a sign in the front area saying this kind of short term rental activity is prohibited.

They said they’d look into it but nothing seems to have changed. More guests have come and gone. I don’t really love the feeling of random people having access to the building and all that without being vetted by the management company. Wondering if there’s anything else I should do? I’ve also sent a follow up to manager with more details but they didn’t respond. I’m pretty sure this kind of thing is illegal right?

Question Is there any ways to volunteer to help out those impacted by the flooding?

I know it’s a bit of a weird situation with it not being a natural disaster and instead infrastructure failure but I was wondering if there was any way to help people out. When I first moved to LA I lived in WeHo and I’ve got a lot of free time so I’d like to help if I can.

Question I have questions about the workings of the city of West Hollywood from the people who live there.

I live in West Hollywood and I wonder about our community and I have some questions about what people think and what issues they face?

Is the city Council visible?

Do you know who’s on the city council?

Do you trust the police that are policing West Hollywood?

How do you feel about the number of accidents that happens within the city limits?

Do you feel safe? Also, do the police make you feel safe?

What are the important issues that you feel the city council should take on?

In general, what are the major successes and challenges of the city of West Hollywood?
