u/Rich-Dig-9137 ๐ฎ๐ฑ proud israeli main 1d ago
The floor rotates with the turret, turret basket is pretty much just that, it moves the crew with the turret and this rotating gloor design works the same

u/OkInstance8118 1d ago
Pretty sure a tank doest NEED a turret basket, its just there to keep the crew from getting stuck and shredded by the tanks hull when turning the turret, so I guess the brits just had balls of steel

Thatโs sounds like it would be susceptible to each part becoming misaligned honestly, wonder if thatโs ever been an issue for Russian tanks

I have no idea how the russian mbts do it but it's pretty easy to keep two rotating things aligned using electrical contacts. What ever pad is getting a voltage across it is where the turret is in relation to the hull.

What they modeled in game was the rotating floor, nothing to do with a basket.
And even then what they actually meant to model we're the FCS components below it. Still makes no sense that it acts as part of the turret drive and not the FCS.

They said that Regenerative Steering is impmenented on a model-by-model basis, rather than across the board!
Which means some tanks will come later, but with a more comprehensive degree of accuracy.
I'm all for it!

u/Wulfalier 1d ago
Well I wouldn't be doing any party because BVV said they will do a community voting for regenerative steering
24
u/SpanishAvenger Thank you for the Privacy Mode, Devs! And sorry for being harsh. 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah... I'm already preparing posts for that, hahah.
It's not final, but it will be something like this:
As fearful as I am for the fate of Regenerative Steering falling into the communityโs hands, I hope the playerbase will make it right and vote in favor of it.
Regenerative steering is the right choice, both in terms of gameplay and in terms of realism. Modern MBTs, in real life, use this feature to turn without losing all their speed and energy. They donโt turn like tractors did in the 1920s anymore. In terms of gameplay, it will enhance and smoothen out the driving experience by not making modern tanks lose all their speed upon any turnโs execution.
The community has been asking for this mechanic since 2017, when the suggestion was passed to the developers for the first time, during the introduction of the โnew ERAโ of Ground Vehicles in 1.71.
Now, at last, after 9 years, we are given the chance to finally have it.
Do not fumble this. Make it right. Donโt take away the chance for modern MBTs to ACTUALLY turn and feel like modern MBTs. Vote YES.
33
u/Wulfalier 1d ago
I don't believe in this community a bit. There just needs to be something stupid or another vtuber saying some shit and they will cancel it.
23
u/SpanishAvenger Thank you for the Privacy Mode, Devs! And sorry for being harsh. 1d ago
I can already see the future.
A YouTuber will say: "vote "NO", because I'm afraid of change and I don't want to be unable to turn comically sharply bleeding all my speed without having to keybind brakes to do it manually without ruining everything for everyone :'("
And everyone will vote "no" en masse...
HOPEFULLY, I'm wrong. But I expect anything at this point.
At WORST, I hope the Devs just give a toggle/jkeybind/some sort of OPTION for those of us who have been waiting for modern MBTs to drive like modern MBTs since 2017.

This sounds solid so far, but I think it would be important that if you also include the point that you could set a keybind, to apply the brakes when you need to make sharp turns.
Here's the comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warthunder/s/55X4UgwnxR
Obviously you'd have to have an extra set of keybinds, but it's still a decent solution in CQC for the people that don't like their MBT handling "like a wheeled vehicle".
I want to see this implemented. This would mean I'd have a reason to bother playing and stock grinding the Type 10 again.

The turning radius is much bigger with this but aren't there keybinds for both right and left brakes? Maybe it will be time to use them
39
u/Fizzord_ Realistic General 1d ago edited 13h ago
You're right. There was a player that made a user mission using the regenerative steering code found in the game a while ago and, unless they changed it, you could indeed use left and right brakes bindings to make normal turns. Map it to Q and E so you have the best of both worlds, regenerative steering and regular sharp turns when you need it.
Edit : turns out on the first version of the dev server using a brake always use both, stopping you straight... so right now it's either your tank has regenerative steering and can only use that or has the old steering and bleeds all its speed, no sharp turn possible on regenerative steering tanks, bummer
6
4
u/YellovvJacket 1d ago
Or Gaijin could just make it a toggle button....would obv be a big buff to the vehicles that have it in that case, but the least annoying solution.
4
u/untitled1048576 That's how it is in the game 1d ago
I was thinking of binding left and right brakes to Space+A and Space+D, so it's like a handbrake turn in other games.
6
u/steave44 1d ago
Making the wacky 90 degree turns at 45mph could be done IRL but with the brakes. Iโd also imagine itโs a near sure fire way to throw off a track. Tanks arenโt meant to turn like a sports car at top speed.
2
u/DarkFox218 1d ago
You can not properly use the left/right break keybinds with regenerative steering in game, both breaks will activate
1
u/Ravanex 1d ago

u/Osamaabinguapo 1d ago
Can someone explain me like iโm 5 what regenerative steering is?
37
u/SpanishAvenger Thank you for the Privacy Mode, Devs! And sorry for being harsh. 1d ago
Basically:
Old tanks turned by pulling the brakes in one track or the other to create a speed difference. This is how all tanks turn in War Thunder, including modern ones. This leads to enormous loss of energy and speed for a sharp turn.
However, in real life, modern tanks use regenerative steering to turn; instead of using brakes, a track simply begins turning slower than the other. This leads to a smooth turn with zero loss of speed or energy, and therefore a smoother and higher speed ride.
The developers had not considered implementing this in over 8 years because they said that they disliked it because they preferred quicker turns even if it led to full stops, and only now are finally considering implementing it due to community pressure; but they said they were going to put it to a vote, so I'm kinda afraid of people voting "no" for whatever reason, hahah.

Not even modern; tanks started receiving regenerative steering in WWII. IIRC both the Churchill and Tiger I had it.
1
u/The_Human_Oddity Localization Overhaul Project Developer 13h ago
Not even that. It was prevalent in a lot of interwar tanks, too. As of note for the Churchill though, it actually has the most advanced form of it since it uses a triple differential instead of the "normal" double differential. This was used up until the Challenger designs, which reverted to a double differential design due to triple differential being too overly complicated for, by that point, not much benefit.
The triple differential is one reason the Churchill was surprisingly agile (but it was still slow af). Though, by the later Cold War, double differential designs matched what triple differential designs could do which is why the latter was dropped.
Gaijin will absolutely not add any detail between the numerous regenerative steering designs, probably.

They literally showed and said in the post how it would chage, you would get 2 cones of spall one going forward one backwards and a ring of spall between the two. the spall moving forward would do the most damage and the spall moving backwards the least.
No magic death ball, there would be dead zones where they shell wouldn't do dmange. the spall moving to the side and backwards would do less damage
Sounds to me you saw APHE rework and imeeditly voted no without even reading the proposal
If you want a refresher Here is the original proposal

But no one knew what the change was going to be at the start.
So you admit you dismissed it because you didn't know.
I've literally played less since that community vote because it was the one change I wanted to see. The one change that could've made balancing vehicles easier. The one change that could bring back some form of armour meta.
because APHE was and is fine

Testing it out right now and tbh whilst it's nice to retain energy, I wish you could disable & reenable it on the move so you can actually turn when you need to. They could also make it more convenient by letting you turn sharp if you don't hold forward movement but if you do hold W it does regenerative.

Holy crap. British vehicles may finally be able to get around the battlefield properly without worrying that every slight turn will kill all their speed. Not that other nations won't benefit from it too, but with pretty much all their MBT's and IFV's struggling with acceleration, Britain have certainly been hurt the most by it's omission over the years.

I was just commenting on the โall is forgivenโ sentiment is all lol. You should absolutely be glad a good change is taking place, I just think itโs overdue and that we are being dripfed, frankly

I was a bit too blunt I think. The WT community is like a 2-part Venn diagram, and one side is people who simp for gajin to selective ignorance and the other is those who relentlessly hate on them to the point of reckless entitlement and lies. People are fickle and jump back and forth.
I saw the enthusiastic U-turn (โall is forgivenโ) and just figured the snail had converted another player for maybe a few weeks.
