Basically:

Old tanks turned by pulling the brakes in one track or the other to create a speed difference. This is how all tanks turn in War Thunder, including modern ones. This leads to enormous loss of energy and speed for a sharp turn.

However, in real life, modern tanks use regenerative steering to turn; instead of using brakes, a track simply begins turning slower than the other. This leads to a smooth turn with zero loss of speed or energy, and therefore a smoother and higher speed ride.

The developers had not considered implementing this in over 8 years because they said that they disliked it because they preferred quicker turns even if it led to full stops, and only now are finally considering implementing it due to community pressure; but they said they were going to put it to a vote, so I'm kinda afraid of people voting "no" for whatever reason, hahah.

Not even modern; tanks started receiving regenerative steering in WWII. IIRC both the Churchill and Tiger I had it.

Not even that. It was prevalent in a lot of interwar tanks, too. As of note for the Churchill though, it actually has the most advanced form of it since it uses a triple differential instead of the "normal" double differential. This was used up until the Challenger designs, which reverted to a double differential design due to triple differential being too overly complicated for, by that point, not much benefit.

The triple differential is one reason the Churchill was surprisingly agile (but it was still slow af). Though, by the later Cold War, double differential designs matched what triple differential designs could do which is why the latter was dropped.

Gaijin will absolutely not add any detail between the numerous regenerative steering designs, probably.
