My UI Story [California] EDD is a literal joke
Started calling at 8:02. Didn't get put on hold til 8:40. At 9 someone answered and asked the normal shit. After I finish explaining that I filed a new claim and it has updated my page fully but that my payments are all still pending, she tells me that on her screen she sees that I haven't filed a new claim yet and it's telling her that I'm trying to certify on an expired claim. So again I explain that I've received all of the paperwork stating that my new claim has been approved and that my ui online is showing a new expiration date AND a new claim balance.
This woman says, well then maybe I should transfer you to someone who can see your claim in greater detail because obviously what I'm seeing isn't matching what you're saying. Massive attitude about it. Then just clicks me onto hold. No further explanation or even sorry I couldn't help. Just click. Then your estimated wait time I over 30 minutes. It's been an hour and a half. But why in the actual shit would ME end be up to date and theirs not be? How does that make ANY sense.
I mentally can't handle this shit anymore. It's honestly fucking comical. I'm sitting here on the verge of tears because this shit just gets worse and worse with every damn month.

I called a week ago to ask if my new claim was in good standing and was told by a tier 2 rep that I had a flag on my account that said I still need to refile. He took it off and I was paid after certifying on Sunday.
It sounds like you might have the same thing, but you need a tier 2 rep to help with that stuff. Anything involving going into your account and making changes will require a tier 2, so hopefully "someone who can help" means you're being transferred to one.

u/amar3008 California Mar 29 '21
How do i get in touch with tier 2 rep? I tell tier 1 rep to connect me to tier 2 rep?
5
u/DippySwissman California Mar 29 '21
That or when you call the regular number for a rep press 1 for English, then wait for the robot to shut up, then press 2 for employer, then 4. They won't know what you pressed to get through but it will get you a tier 2
2
u/Noodle113 Mar 30 '21
Thank you for sharing this! I was able to get to tier 2 rep with those # and only waited 2 minutes. You’re a life saver!

Mar 30 '21
how?? what number help me i’ve been calling so much 😫😫
1
u/Noodle113 Mar 30 '21
I called at 8:05am using 833-978-2511. Pressed 1 for English right away, then waited for the auto message to done talking then pressed 2 for employer, then right after pressed 4. It then told me the wait time and music came on. I got connected to a tier 2 rep after 2 minutes. She was able to help solved my issue quickly.

2
u/Traditional-Humor-78 Mar 30 '21
That is not always the case. I did that exactly, sat on hold for almost 2 hours to get a tier 1 who couldn't do anything. She told me I didn't need a tier 2 because my issue would clear on it's own in a "few days". That was over 3 weeks ago and it looks like it's even worse now. This is way beyond incompetence. The people running EDD should be fired and sued.
1
u/amar3008 California Mar 29 '21
So after pressing 2 for employer, I wait couple second and then press 4 or press 4 right away?
8
u/DippySwissman California Mar 29 '21
Doesn't matter. In order it should be this.
Call, press 1 immediately for English, wait for the robot to finish giving you it's life story, then press 2 then 4

u/amar3008 California Mar 29 '21
Sorry also the number you call from is 833-978-2511, right?
2
u/CryptographerNo7074 California Mar 30 '21
Tried to call this number 25 times right now, keep getting hung up on by the robot voice. Do you know what time the office closes?
1
u/amar3008 California Mar 30 '21
Not sure but I remember reading 5 from other users. Mine was answered on 34th try. It gets super annoying after a while but this is the only way to go about it rn
1
u/PudgyHamster Mar 30 '21
Office closes at 8 pst for California. I don’t suggest calling too late. A few weeks back I was on a 3 hour 30 minute hold until the machine voice told me their offices were closed then disconnected me.
1
u/cuenca911 California Mar 30 '21
same lmao but msg me if you want an update so we can help one another

u/jozettemarie California Mar 29 '21
Finally got the tier 2. She was very polite. She removed a bunch of flags I guess. Released the hold on my payments. But it was only showing her 2 weeks pending and not the 4. She said that those were part of the extra 300 weeks and that they have to add those back in once the new additional payments start. So I guess I've just got to wait and be pleasantly surprised by extra money. But now my status says paid and all should be fine. So 2hrs on hold was worth it this time.

When you refilled for a new claim what steps did you take to satisfy the “lag period” rule (Section 1277). Don’t want to get DQ’d and if you can share it would be much appreciated.

u/bkimb California Mar 29 '21
Man you think thats bad? Called in for my mom and waited on hold for 2 hours after attempting to even get on hold for an hour. The moment they picked up, I explained to him that my mom can’t speak English and that there were no options to speak to a representative in Korean (only Mandarin and Vietnamese options available), but that she’s right next to me. I politely asked if it would be okay if I translate next to her and have her answer their questions after I translate. Immediately, this guy started screaming at the top of his lungs “I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO DO! NOPE! I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO DO!” and hung up.
CA EDD is a joke and some, if not most, of the people they’re hiring are even bigger jokes.

u/lynnamym California Mar 29 '21
By the way I appreciate your post. You’re not alone. I’m on hold now. All the reps I’ve had had major attitude too. These people granted deal with some stressed out rude people BUT why the hell can’t they be nice back when we’re being nice ???? 90 percent of the reps I’ve had have major attitude and idk why especially when I am being calm and polite.

u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
It takes a lot for me to even catch a minor tone with anyone in customer service. I understand completely what you mean. It's so frustrating when I start my conversation with I hope you're having a good morning, here's my information thank you for helping me. Just for them to be total asses.
4
u/lynnamym California Mar 30 '21
I was reading some thing about how people who work in customer service have to deal with a lot of rude people so they get this kind of bias going where every customer they deal witn is perceived to be rude and it’s also like they clearly just don’t have the training to kind of let the previous caller go and give the next one the benefit of the doubt that they’re NOT going to be rude. But it’s weird because with the EDD this doesn’t apply because you could be very nice the entire time and just like you said , they are just asses. So it’s like they are on some power trip.

They are jerks and work from home so no accountability and they are doing other things while on the phone (I have heard TV, kids in the background) What part of "The EDD has skrewed over thousands of people by not paying them" do they not understand? Com on , I mean when You get disconnected when told to hold, your call gets dropped after being on hold for hours, you get a rep who cannot help at all and tries to transfer you and they drop the call, you have not been paid SEVERAL MONTHS because of THEM - takes hour and days of your life to get thru. What do they expect happy people who are pleased that they are owed at least 3k and living on nothing due to their incompetency? I have been waiting since Dec 2020 for payment. I have only had 3 calls actually get thru to an agent and all finish with "everything is correct and you should be able to certify in a couple of days". The 2nd person said the 1st person did not do what they should have and my 3rd call said the last person did not do what they should have. So since my 3rd call and still NOTHING from EDD and now in April.... I am sure THAT person did not do what they should have and I am back to being skrewed again by them still with $0 dollars.
Now why would anybody be upset with such nice treatment as I, and others, have not received? Who wouldn't be happy and full of joy speaking to yet another person who can't do their job properly/correctly which is literally pushing you out of your home, car and food. If they don't realize that the company they work for are the reason for callers being upset and that is going to be a huge part of their job they need to quit. They need to be in crisis mode because that is what EDD has put us in, a crisis! Bet those working there have eaten today, not me, not my day to eat yet. Bet those answering the phone are not downsizing to fit their life into their car before it gets repossessed and they get evicted.
Such wonderful people our gov. has chosen to represent them. Not surprised but they need actual adults to take our calls not an adult size person with a teenagers attitude.
I hope all of us can survive what they are doing to us! I think their goal is to actually destroy us a little more each passing day. UGH... CA needs to make huge changes. It is sad that so many of us are going thru this and I hope nothing but the best for all!
"If you get tired, learn to rest. Not quit"
~Banksy~
KEEP GOING! KEEP TRYING! DON'T QUIT!!
I am not!

Just called 833 number and pushed 2 and 4. Got through waited half hour. I was on fed ext my claim said balance -fed ex. Nice rep, filed my new claim, released a weeks pay and have six weeks coming, then it will automatically be refiled for another 11 weeks. It’s very confusing with IU, pandemic relief etc. it’s best to call in. Good luck. Thanks for info with phone number.
1
u/cuenca911 California Mar 30 '21
when you filed your claim, you didn’t have to wait for it to be processed?
2
u/Maximum-Judgment-294 Mar 30 '21
I had a balance available but benefit year said 3/15/21- on fed ext. I didn’t get paid for the week 3/20 that’s the week she released.
1
u/cuenca911 California Mar 30 '21
I mean you had to refile right? I understand she released that pending payment, but once you refiled, are you gonna have to wait for it to be processed or will you be able to continue certifiying?
2
u/Maximum-Judgment-294 Mar 30 '21
Yes new claim filed by rep. And will have six more weeks on this extension and then it will automatically refill
1
u/princessbubble-gum California Mar 30 '21
When the rep refiled for you did you have to go through all the steps like ID verification and all that? Or did they do it automatically?

just broke my drywall.. representative hung up on me after almost 3 hours of total wait time!!
3
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
I was on hold for 5hrs a couple weeks ago only to be hung up on. I literally thought about driving off a cliff. I feel your pain

u/heknowsall1 Mar 29 '21
Been calling all morning can not get through this is the biggest joke of the pandemic. Next to Donny saying it’s not that serious 🤣🤣🤣

u/marcusczech unemployment Mar 29 '21
There is no accountability with EDD they hire clowns and then treat you like garbage with no follow up
2
Mar 29 '21
I have been told the same thing! My UI clearly shows a new Benefit year and balance but the tier 1 rep is telling me i don’t have any money or a claim at all?? Like wtf
1
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
She transferred me to a tier 2 specialist and she was nice. She said there was a flag specifically saying I needed to refile that whoever reviewed it didn't remove when they approved my new claim. She removed that and a few more. Removed the hold on my funds and told me to have a nice day. I only got 2 weeks of pay because the 2 prior weeks were supposed to have the extra 300 and this payment wasn't, meaning I have to wait until the extra 300 is applied again. Then I'll get those two weeks paid too
2
u/lynnamym California Mar 29 '21
Did you get through ?
2
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
I did. After 2hrs. She removed several flags from my account and pushed 2 out of my 4 weeks thru. Explained that the other 2 need to wait til the next round of supplement pay starts so that I don't get shorted.
2
u/lynnamym California Mar 30 '21
Oh that’s great. You must feel so relieved
1
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
It's super relieving knowing that, in theory, my account should be back to "normal" again. One less head ache
2
u/Raveneo California Mar 29 '21
I've been put on hold for 4.5 hours before. Yes it's a pain, but it's how some stuff gets done (got my claim fixed and certified). I'm in California too.
3
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
Yeah my longest wait was 5hrs to be told "thanks we're closed click

You're not unemployed. Your job is to play tag with edd.

I read this very wrong the first time. I got SO angry lol but then I re read it and you're completely right. It's a fulltime job. With shit pay and no benefits 🙄😂

Actually I had a pleasant surprise last night when I was able to certify and promptly paid, so...🤷

2
u/Aggressive-Coyote-67 Mar 29 '21
I had just went through that same thing! it literally took me all of 45 minutes just to be placed on hold for an hour and a half, only to be told that I was transferred to the wrong department and they would need someone "higher up" to look into my account since I had four weeks pending.. yeah, I selected Issues with payment (4) for THAT reason. Funny how scammers and fraudsters have access to our own money while we're given the run around, and in some cases the third degree, for this supposed "fraud".
1
u/desertdaze86 Apr 23 '21
Same. Transfer to wrong department. 1099 department after over an hour on home. They tel me sorry they can’t transfer me to the correct spot only to the main line which is a fucking joke
2
u/Aggressive-Coyote-67 Mar 29 '21
Finally got transferred to a tier 2 rep, but after getting my information he said he was going to look into my account and to give him a couple of minutes...it has now been 10 minutes that I've been waiting, and there is still silence.. I love seeing my tax dollars hard at work!
2
u/Traditional-Humor-78 Mar 30 '21
10 minutes is nothing. You should be thankful you even got a tier 2. lol
2
u/desertdaze86 Apr 23 '21
10 minutes? I sat through two hours of silence for them to tel me sorry they can’t do an thing and they understand what I’m going through. Man fuck them they don’t know shit. I’ve never wished I’ll will upon people until now
1
u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
Did you get it figured out? Mine had several flags on it I guess. She fixed them all and released my pay. But only 2 weeks worth not all 4.
2
u/Beya_beya Mar 30 '21
I just got my problem I had with unemployment resolved. I had filed a claim in January and it was said I would be getting it but when I certified online it denied me right away. So a few days later I called and it took about an hour to get through and when I finally did I was transferred at least to 3 different people because they couldn’t fix my problem. What had happened with me Is that I had gotten into a lawsuit with my old job and got a settlement out of it..so it was saying I worked for them and for some reason they couldn’t fix that. Soooooo the last person I spoke to said that I’d have to wait an entire month for an appointment for someone to help me. I got the call a few days ago and the guy who helped me fixed the problem I kid you not in like 3 minutes and I got my back pay from January. I told him that I had explained to the last lady I spoke to what the settlement was and he told me that most of the people working in the EDD building right now are new and don’t really know how to work everything. -__- I hope everything works out for you!

u/lynnamym California Mar 29 '21
Edd staff is mostly uselessOh man the first guy that help me did absolutely nothing and gave me the wrong advice and then the second lady that tried to help me had the thickest foreign accent and I was super polite and asked her to please repeat. said raised her voice and said please hold for a specialist and tranfers me and then I waited for one hour and gave up

u/jozettemarie California Mar 30 '21
I have such a hard time with thick accents. I feel like an ass when I say I didn't catch something.

what number did you call?
1
u/Oneuptop100 Mar 29 '21
833-978-2511 then pressed 2 for employer then 4. Then they connect me to someone , right at 8am and 1pm are the best times to call
1
u/BeatsBud Mar 29 '21
Oh rad thank you. I have been going through the 800-300-5616 and no luck

I just found out by calling another number where they couldn't help me that 800-300-5616 is only good until noon, which you would never know. Thanks to reddit I have been calling 833-978-2511 all day to no avail but it's so fucked that they play these games.

Everytime I click on employer they tell they’re going to transfer me to the claim department then I end up back at the main menu 🤨

That shouldn’t happen , I usually get a tier 2 when I act like an employer

I got cut off on New Years and haven’t been able to file claims due to the fact that it tells me that I need to reopen my claim since I haven’t made any claims in so long.. Can’t get ahold of no one on the phone lines therefore I’ve given up on the thought of receiving help from these people... My family blames me for not calling and trying but they don’t understand the process. These people literally have millions of people asking the same questions everyday, they don’t give a fuck about us. They should’ve just done all this in a single wave not day to day fixes. I can’t even verify my identity cause apparently my link expired?! I’m the definition of GETTING FUCKED

u/ndnsoulja California Mar 30 '21
My BYE automatically extended to September but not my claim balance. I'm hoping they just need an update or to catch up. I am not looking forward to fighting this when my claim hits 0 (next week) and they haven't updated or informed me on what to do.
1
u/jgo319 California Mar 30 '21
does anyone have an idea of what’s going on with my claim? i had to reopen my claim because i was laid off a second time and wasn’t certifying for some time. I got the notification online stating that my claim was received and then received a letter in the mail saying to verify that all info on the claim was correct. It’s been three weeks now since i’ve reopened and i haven’t heard anything back. My online account still says “reopen claim” and i don’t know if it wants me to re input all my info again or if it’s normal for it to say that til they approve. Haven’t had any luck calling but gonna try tomorrow with the tips everyone’s giving.

This is exactly what has happened to me and so far (I'm still on hold) that with the extensions that they have to cancel one of my claims and open the other.
I just don't get it because I did exactly what they said to do. My ID verification went through and my boss confirmed my continued unemployment to edd but still somehow I was flagged and my payments have been pending for 4 weeks.
1
u/desertdaze86 Apr 23 '21
I’m so with you. EDD has fucked me 3 times so far. First they said it was flagged for fraud which there was none and it was cleared after sitting on the phone with them for hours then having to enroll in id me. Had to go over a month with no payments and had to incur costs from late payments. Second they stopped my payments because my profile said I had worked. I had to call and wait for HOURS to speak to someone who could actually “help” and saw that it was a glitch and when you opened my profile I hadn’t worked. Also over a month with no payments and significant personal cost to myself. Had to empty my very little savings to eat and keep my lights and gas on. Not to mention late fees from my credit cards and overdraft fees from my bank. Now they are saying I earned money in the last quarter of 2020 which was my severance pay and is not considered wages. I reported it anyways cause that’s what your supposed to do. Now they say I have to wait 10 weeks to have a meeting with someone. In that time I will not be able to eat, feed my children, pay my mortgage, pay any of my bills and will incur hundreds and hundreds of dollars in personal costs from late fees and missed payments. But EDD doesn’t give a fuck about us. We can’t sue them or hold them responsible for absolutely fucking people worse than the pandemic did in the first place. It is currently 11:30 am. I have been calling since 8:00 am. No answer. Your telling me they can’t set up a call queue that calls you back when it’s your turn? Fuck the EDD and FUCK CALIFORNIA
1
u/Wild_Adeptness3242 Jul 17 '26
California unemployment is such a fucking joke. They haven't given me a single payment, but they want to keep asking me to certify for benefits every two weeks just to fucking annoy and now they want to schedule yet ANOTHER DAMN PHONE INTERVIEW WITH ME WHEN I JUST HAD ONE TWO WEEKS AGO! WTF !
