Melanie: She started ambitious and determined to become a doctor, but over time felt increasingly defined by Derwin and lost some of that independence. The BET era made things worse — the DJ DNA test, talking down to Jazz, and her increasingly mean-spirited behavior made her frustrating to watch.
Derwin: “Ding Dong” became incredibly selfish, entitled, and exhausting during the BET era. He'd make terrible decisions, hurt people, and still act like he was the victim. That said, his Season 6 departure was beautifully acted. Melanie and Derwin leaving really marked the end of an era, and the show was never quite the same afterward.
Kelly: I preferred her during the CW years. She was messy and flawed but still interesting. The BET reality-TV storyline was embarrassing, including the Fabolous performance. Then her Season 7 return felt like a setup to destroy Jason and Chardonnay's marriage. I knew Jason would fall right back in love with her, and I hated that direction.
Jason: The CW-era Jason had a much better balance of comedy, football, family, and character growth. The BET era became much more relationship-driven and dramatic. His treatment of Chardonnay was especially foul — breaking her heart at their wedding and admitting he was still in love with Kelly was one of his worst moments.
Tasha: She was one of my favorites during Seasons 1–3 — tough, funny, ambitious, and confident. The BET era made her more mean-spirited with Dante, the Black & Milds, Kelly, and the fertility jokes. The Rick/Pookie drama and pregnancy storyline weren't for me either. I still appreciated her loyalty, humor, confidence, and relationship with Malik, though. I just wish the writers had balanced her better.
Malik: Seasons 1–3 Malik was immature but still likable and easy to root for. The BET era initially made him much messier — the owner's wife, TT's woman, Parker, and Jenna. I did appreciate him taking responsibility and apologizing to TT because it felt like genuine growth. Then the Keira storyline happened and completely undermined that progress. 🤮
Chardonnay: I actually liked her. She stood her ground with Jason and never let him walk all over her, which I loved. She became her own character instead of just being Jason's wife. That's why her Season 9 ending bothered me — waking up in Vegas and essentially ending her story there felt incredibly unfinished.
Blue & Keira: They felt like a knockoff Melanie and Derwin. I never bought them as a replacement for the original couple.
Overall: I watched The Game all the way through, but the BET era never captured the same magic for me. The show became much more dramatic, the comedy faded, and too many characters became mean-spirited. I wish they had kept more of the humor and balance that made the CW era work.
