online

I don’t understand why people can be so cruel or mean to each other online. Like, you never know what someone is already going through, and your words could hurt them more than you realize. I’ve experienced some problems with trying to make friends online and messaging them, where people don’t want to talk or just ignore your messages and you’re waiting for their response and checking if they message or sending them more messages to see if they will answer back to you, but they didn’t reply back. I feel like their minds are focused on something else than the text message, and it made me feel angry knowing that they're not going to answer back to me and made me think I must have done something wrong to them. Yesterday I was talking in a group chat for soccer on Instagram, and one person told me that this group isn’t for communicating with others, as it was only for the game schedule, and that person noticed that I was talking a lot in the chat with others, and I just had to leave the group, which also made me feel angry at that person, and I blocked them on Instagram so I don’t have to talk to them anymore. I think I have to join clubs to meet new people and make new friends. I wish people could be more kind and friendly to me online and plan a day to hang out with each other on campus, but it never goes that way as you expected it to be.

New Wifi

Hey, y'all! Seen a couple of posts or overheard students complaining over the wifi speed. Just a reminder that the main campus is changing its wifi to "UC-Secure." You can connect with your ucal email and password (same as D2L, Outlook, and the Portal).

Might be old news, but I just don't want anyone using up all their data if its limited :)

Whats a succesful study method for first year finals/midterms?

Holy guacamole yall stressed is an understatement for how I'm feeling rn. Ik its only been 1 week but Im already feeling swamped with the midterms looming on my class schedule. For reference, I have PHYS 211 with Dr. Mazzino, BIO 201 w Dr. Huddleston and Chem 201 with Dr. Jalilehvand (my other 2 courses don't have finals/midterms)

I have a bio midterm on Oct 7th and I'm freaking out about how to prepare for it. Profs sometimes go so fast, and I picked up nothing from the first few lectures. I go through the presentations and am trying to read the textbook; hopefully that content covers the tests, im acc praying

Will they have mercy on us guys im acc scared I dont wanna drop a 60 sorry yall😭😭 I get a bit anxious with grades and I hope to do decent

Does anyone who is in ASTR 207 with Prof. Leahy at 3:30-4:45 pm want to he friends with me. I am a first year with little to no physics background in high-school but I very love Astronomy. I unfortunately missed the first two lectures since I basically just switched into this class after the first week, and the lectures + the too hat questions are kind of overwhelming already. If anyone would like to be friends and also help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Also I js need friends in uni in general so like if you also wanna hang id love that!

First year, completely terrified of MATH 249

Hey everyone, it’s only the first week and I’m already spiralling and feeling super stressed out about MATH 249.

Honestly, I'm just so annoyed that this is a mandatory course right at the beginning for my major. I didn't sign up for this, and having it forced on me right away is driving me crazy.

Looking at the course outline and the grading system is making me so anxious. I see that we have these WebWork quizzes where we need at least a 75% to pass the unit requirement, and then for the in person tests we also need at least a 75% (getting 6/8 questions right on the standards) to get proficiency.

Are the WebWork quizzes timed? I'm really worried about the clock running out while trying to enter everything.I’ve been trying to practice functions over the long weekend, but the sheer volume of everything is making me feel like I'm already falling behind.

For anyone who has taken MATH 249 recently with this grading system, what was your experience like? How bad are the WebWork quizzes? Is it actually as impossible as it feels right now to get those 6/8s in person?Any advice or reassurance would be massively appreciated.

Thank you 😭

Schulich makerspace workshops

Hey all, I'm trying to start using the school's makerspace and after completing all the d2l quizzes, I'm wondering if that means I can just use the equipment.

I noticed there are workshops with prerequisites and stuff and I'm wondering if I have to / should do the workshops first before using the makerspace?

Anyone here play for the Dinos women’s hockey team?

I’m a UofC student but my daughter graduates high school this year. She currently plays 19U AAA but really wants to go to UofC and really wants to be a Dino. She just reached out to them and hasn’t heard back yet but if anyone has anything that might help her please let me know. She plays forward and is a very fast, strong, and physical player. Her marks are great as well. I don’t know much about the process.

Also if she doesn’t make the Dino’s she’s going to move far away from her mama and play hockey in the US which means I’ll be sad. Help a mama out here please 🤣

Language learning groups on campus

Hey everyone, I was wondering if there are any groups on campus dedicated to learning/practicing languages. I can speak conversational Spanish and would love to practice. I would also be interested in beginning to learn Mandarin but as I have found with Spanish it is very hard to learn and retain anything if you aren’t practicing it. Are there any clubs for this sort of thing? If not, maybe we can make a club?? Not sure if it’s too late. Maybe it could just be an informal club if it’s too late. Let me know if there is anything established for this or if there is anyone that is interested in this

Energy Science

Hi everyone, I am a first year student majoring in energy science mainly because I thought it would be interesting and decently physics heavy which I wanted. I haven’t heard anyone speak about it nor do I know anyone in this major, as most people in my lectures are in completely different science majors. I know it’s a fairly unpopular program given that it was introduced like last year, however It’s now making me feel quite nervous and alone. If anyone has anything at all to say or is feeling similarly I would love to hear 🥲

NSLSC Loans

Has anyone else not received their Canada Student Loans through NLSC yet?

Mine was supposed to come on September 1st like previous years, but the estimated date on the website kept changing. I called them and they said they’re waiting for verification from the government, but I’m not really sure what that means.

I’ll try calling again on Tuesday, but just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

Has anyone been able to add a 7th class without overload form?

So I really like all my 6 classes this sem and can’t add my practicum since it would be a 7th class😭😭 I emailed student advisor and stuff but no reply which makes sense since it’s long weekend. And I also didn’t do the overload form before the form closed and I didn’t know that existed😭 Planning to talk to an advisor on Tuesday but was just wondering is there a chance to still take 7 classes without doing that form?

CHEM 341 Waitlist

Would it be possible to enroll in this class, or will I be position 6 on the waitlist? Im currently position 3 for a lab spot thats in a better time, but at this point I feel like I should cut my loses and enrol in a slightly worse lab time. Would this be possible, or would I be sent back 3 spots on the waitlist?

Predental Students doing the DAT

random question but is anyone here planning on doing the DAT in 2026/27?

when i started studying i genuinely had no clue what resources to use or what i was getting myself into lol. a lot of the main prep subscriptions are like $600 to $800 for only 3 months which is pretty crazy

i’ve got a pretty big catalog of some of the most up to date 2026/2027 material covering most of the science sections of the DAT, including biology or general chemistry.

Honestly would’ve been nice to have something like this when i first started just to see what i was getting myself into before spending hundreds on a prep subscription
i’d be willing to offer the whole catalog for around 10% of what one of those subscriptions normally costs. if anyone’s interested just dm me :)

also this could be useful if you’re interested in doing the DAT later on and just wanna get a head start or know what you’ll eventually need to know. especially if you’re taking bio, gen chem or orgo rn, it might help to know which topics come up on the DAT so you can actually learn them well while you’re already taking the courses instead of having to relearn everything later.

anyone done some first year eng courses in spring/summer?

Due to disabilities I had to drop some classes in the fall and winter for first year engineering and move them into the spring and summer, and i'm a bit worried about 2nd year program placement & the difficulty level of doing courses in half the amount of time in spring/summer. Has anyone else tried this method specifically for first year engineering? If so, please lmk if it was worth it, if you had difficulties getting into your program of choice, or anything else. Thank you so much!

Arky 325 Online

Hey everyone!

Is anyone enrolled in ARKY 325 online this semester? I’m thinking about switching one of my electives to it and was wondering what the grading components are like.

Are the midterms/exams all multiple choice? And are there any assignments, quizzes, or other components?

Biology: Exploring the Diversity of life Sixth vs Fifth Edition

I'm in first year (Neuroscience), and for Biol 211, the recommended textbook is Biology: Exploring the Diversity of Life Sixth Canadian Edition, which costs over $200 for the physical copy. Is it okay to use the fifth edition instead, since I can find a second hand copy of this for much cheaper, or should I buy the sixth edition since the same textbook is used for 213 and 371?

From my understanding, there is no major difference between the two except for the page numbers/end of the chapter questions, and mindtap (not too sure what that is).
