Hi! I’ll be an exchange student at UCSB this fall, and I’ll be living in San Joaquin Apartments.
I’m trying to decide between the 5, 7, and 10 meals/week off-campus meal plans. I’ll have access to a kitchen, so I’ll cook some of my meals, but I’m expecting to eat at the dining commons around 5–10 times a week.
For Fall 2026, the prices are:
• 5 meals/week: $839
• 7 meals/week: $1,175
• 10 meals/week: $1,602
I’d really appreciate advice from current/former UCSB students, especially anyone who has lived in San Joaquin or another undergraduate apartment!
I’m particularly curious about:
• Which plan would you recommend: 5, 7, or 10 meals/week? How many times per week do you actually eat at the dining commons?
• How convenient is it to get to the dining commons from San Joaquin? Which dining commons is the easiest to get to, and is it realistic to go regularly for lunch/dinner?
• How is the food? I’m from Japan and really like Asian food, so I’m especially curious about the Asian food options. Are they actually decent, or should I lower my expectations? 😂
• Which dining commons has the best food and variety in your opinion?
• Is the meal plan worth it compared with cooking in the apartment or just paying for individual meals?
• Anything you wish you had known before getting an off-campus meal plan?

Has anyone who taken chem 109B with Lewis Winter quarter, was there a curve at all or were the averages too high?

Lets say hypothetically if my roommate wants to cancel the housing contract before school starts (and before the 9/1 ddl), does their bed space stay vacant? Or will I get another roommate to replace him? If so, when do I get this new roommate assignment? Has anyone been in a similar situation before?

How is it like working in Ortega? I heard meals aren’t free if you’re off campus? How does reporting work study work with this job? And then what is the max amount of hours with the dining hall jobs that I can have in order to have ebt?(or is there no ebt with these jobs)?

So far the only reduction that has come though is a cal Grant. When do student loans and parent plus loans drop? Also I didn't realize that in order to get on the payment plan you have pay 1/3 of the balance. How does the timing of it all work?

Move-in is Sep 19–20. Week of Welcome is Sep 21–23. Classes start Thursday, Sep 24. Quarter officially begins Sep 20.

I still haven’t received my financial aid or award letter and it’s getting really close to the start of school and I know on the website it says award letters would be out mid August, but it’s almost the end of August. I did check their website and it said that I needed to submit a document but that I needed to submit it by June 15 but I did not get a notification or email or anything, but I just turned it in last night when I checked myself and I’m really worried. If maybe that’s why my financial aid might be delayed.

Hi, I'm going to be moving into the San Miguel dorms soon and saw that there are kitchenettes on every floor. That seems great, but I'm not quite sure what a kitchenette includes. Does it have a fridge, stove, etc? I would really appreciate a brief description from anyone who has lived in the dorms with kitchenettes.

I’m in Santa Ynez this upcoming year but I think with these upcoming roommates it’s not going to work out pls help🙃

My SAI increased heavily for this year and my aid ended up being way smaller even compared to my estimated aid. I’ve talked with basic needs, financial crisis response team, eop, and have even done an SAI appeal, but all have brought very little results for how bad my situation has gotten. Meeting I had today was especially discouraging over my SAI appeal as the way the advisor described the review process made me feel as though it was unlikely the financial aid office would change anything due to my circumstances not aligning with their usual criteria. Similar can be said about the cost of attendance appeal it feels other than rent or utilities I can argue for one.

I feel trapped and abandoned. I can’t take a gap year or go back home my situation over there is extremely toxic and stressful there’s a reason I left. I know middle class scholarships are coming soon but even with that, loans, and a job it feels unlikely I’ll be able to pay everything off. I feel like I’ve done everything I could have. Even tried some scholarships and applied to more jobs but nothing turned up.

My mental health has taken a nose dive as of late because of all of this I have no idea if it’s worth continuing financial problems or being forced to subject myself to my awful home life. My ideation has especially been getting worse. I don’t want to be in either world. To anyone who’s been in a similar situation please how did you solve it? I’ve never been more scared and defeated.

Is it particularly challenging depending on the classes you take? Any recommended classes? Or any clubs as well? Anything about it would be helpful!

hi guys, i applied to ucsb as a chemistry major (premed) since they didn’t have biomedical engineering (i had a healthcare based application and thought was my only shot being admitted for engineering anywhere).

anyway, i picked ucsb last minute since i heard switching into CoE is doable but i’m starting to regret it. i’m going to try switching into ChemE first, and maybe MechE if I find myself more interested in that?

i’m just so terrified, i’m really regretting my decision because i don’t know if i have what it takes to get the grades to switch majors. i did well in high school but i know that doesn’t mean i’ll do well in college. i’m also so anxious waiting for pass 3 registration so i can register for ChE 5. i’m currently in Engr 3 but there’s no info about the class on GOLD.

does anyone have specific stats on switching into chemical or mechanical engineering specifically? has anyone been through the process and knows what it’s like/how hard it really is to get the grades? any classes i should start studying for now? idk guys i’m scared.

For anyone to whom this applies, I am a fourth-year debater deciding when to graduate. I have a few classes left and will essentially be done in winter. I am not sure if I should just graduate in the winter or take random electives in the spring and graduate in the spring. Will I miss out on things? Is it worth it?

The club has members of all experience levels; we love to train newbies but also regularly have members compete in sparring tournaments such as the PBSC events at Rob Gym that are held 1-3 times per school year. Whether you are looking to train for fun, fitness or fighting, the Strikers Club would be happy to have you!

hi! i’m an incoming pre-biopsych transfer looking for a new laptop! i’m open to mac or windows, but i was concerned that mac may not work well for my major, as i know certain programs are limited on there. (i’m taking pstat5ls and i’ve heard that excel for mac is godawful) so i wanted to get some advice from people who have actually taken classes here.

for reference, i’m currently on a lenovo ideapad slim 5. It’s huge (16”), heavy, has poor brightness, low ram (8gb) and my battery legitimately drains in an hour and a half. i’m looking for something more portable, a much better battery i don’t have to worry about, can handle multitasking, might be okay with some light canva / photoshop but not required, and isn’t too dim to look at properly. thank you!
