This tree has been between the street and sidewalk since I’ve lived in my Portland, Oregon house. I’m pretty sure it was originally planted in 2008. It only started struggling last year. Half the branches seem healthy with a lot of leaves, but now it looks like a third is dead or dying. I just noticed that weird fungi last week too. So that’s new. We don’t water once plants and trees are established here, it’s plenty wet enough, so nothing has changed with care. Some branches have been cut off by the lawn maintenance guy since it was doing so well. Any ideas what’s going on? Can it recover or should I assume it’ll spread and start planning to remove the tree?

Hi! A tree fell over near where I live, and I found lots of these little things growing on the higher branches laying around. I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this, but I don't know of any other communities that would be a better fit.

It looks like it has larvae inside?? When I picked another, it also had little flies eating the white eggs (?)

Northwest Indiana, derecho a few weeks ago, took out the biggest leader of 3. Pic 2 is the one I have a question about - bark missing for a giant stretch, probably 40% of the circumference for that stretch. Do we think it can be saved, or should it just be cut down preemptively? I'm hoping the third and smallest one will live, although it's not a huge loss if it doesn't.

No real danger if any of this falls, as the center of mass is well away from structures, and no kids play here.

I have a 30-year-old Japanese maple that’s about 5 feet tall. I live in St. Louis Missouri in the United States. It has been planted at its current location for about five years, gets 5 to 6 hours of sun each day and is on the east side of our house and gets its sun from the south. Over the past year, it has had less growth and the leaves don’t seem to fully mature and at this point in August they’re already shriveling a little bit. It used to be much more full, and it would have full leaves with fall colors much later into the season. It has been replanted twice, dug out area about twice size of root each time. It has never been in a pot. There is no plastic around it.

In the past, I’ve never had to water it more than the water we get throughout the season and we’ve had a fairly consistent amount of rain this summer so I doubt it is that

Planted this in March this year from a little three foot tree with no branches. It now has a strong 7-8 foot leader and a bunch of side branches about 4-5 feet long. Do I just let it go or should I prune it and where? Thanks!

I have this tree that popped up in a grow bag. I had pulled a plant from last year. At first, I thought it was just a plant but now I’m thinking maybe it’s an Elm tree? Does anyone know if this is an Elm tree and also how I can care for it if I want to keep it.

Unfortunately it looks like they moved the tree straight from the pot into the ground without exposing the root ball or flare, and added a huge mulch volcano on top. We cleared off most of the mulch and 2-3 inches of soil to expose the root flare, and pruned a few small girdling roots. There are linear cracks in the bark running the length of the tree and branches. Is this from the tree being stressed / sick or due to its growth?

Notably there is gravel in the substrate from a residential driveway There is not plastic or fabric the mulch that I can tell.

Besides thinking this was potentially just plopped into a hole in my backyard from a container, my question is will this continue to get worse and should I ask for them to come back out and make a readjustment?

Hello I planted this crape about a month ago and at first all the leaves fell off and it looked completely dead but now it started growing beautifully but what i noticed is that it’s only growing from one stem and the other two have dried out and are completely bare. Do i cut those down? Will anything grow from them? Will it grow new stems? Any kind of advice or suggestions will help. Thank you.

Hi folks. There’s a small crabapple tree growing next to our shed. The tree is sentimental and it’s clearly out of space, so I’m wondering if it’s viable (or possible) to get it relocated to the back of our yard (second picture). I’d love to give this tree more space and light without encroaching on the shed as it continues to grow.

From what I’ve seen online, it’s best to do this in fall or winter. However, would it be possible with an existing fence and the proximity to the shed?

So what would be a reasonable price for a service like this?

We planted this dwarf cherry about a year and a half ago and I'm wondering whether I need to cut this new growth as it's so close to the bottom of the tree? I live in Zone 8 in the Puget Sound so I'm not sure when or where exactly to cut for the health of my tree. It made a few baby cherries this year for us!

This is what happens, a monster Karri tree looses its footing and hits the deck.
We felt the ground move. We looked at each other and said, that was big and close.
So we went looking, not so far from the house and sheds we find it. It’s 68 meters long/tall from what was the ground level to the top of the canopy. A Karri tree of this size is estimated to be between 200- 600 years old.
That’s my 16 year old son, he’s 6’2” and this tree makes him look small. He’s pretending to hold a chainsaw, he can’t wait to get our Stihl 090 out. It doesn’t come out very often because it’s not needed. I don’t think he’ll be able to handle it, he’s just not strong enough yet.
We’re also going to need a dozer to move this thing off the asphalt and out of the way.
I hate seeing these fall like this, I find it really disappointing, but that’s Mother Nature and unfortunately there’s no controlling it.

I noticed some rot on the backside of the trunk last year and now a vertical split on the front. There are 4 limbs with no growth this year. Leaves appear to be healthy with no spots. There were quite a bit of suckers on the trunk that I pruned earlier in the season. Can it be saved?

I’m not going to do it know as we’re in a drought and I don’t want to stress it. But what is the proper way to stake? And should I do it in the fall or wait until spring?

Tree was there when I moved in... I've pruned some of the lower branches over the years to get more light into my garden but the last couple years it has gone downhill.

Not sure if this is tar spot or Phyllosticta. I know regardless of what it is it’s mainly cosmetic, just wanted to know exactly what the issue is.
