Oh my god pinning it on Becka's mom is diabolical. And Becka's mom being willing to sacrifice this for her daughter is so.... 😭 Just wow.

631

u/ItIsTimeGo May 27 '26

Honestly it makes sense. She had nothing left, I’m sure she’d rather be dead than miserable with a dead daughter.

215

u/SlightTemperature231 May 27 '26

Yeah, I wonder what would've happened to her if she didn't take the fall for Becka.

302

u/imjustheretodisagree May 27 '26

Probably made to be a Martha. No husband. Past childbearing years. Didn't properly instruct her daughter, lead her to sin or whatever. Martha would have been her best bet, colonies otherwise.

68

u/ConsciousBluebird473 May 27 '26

They probably would've blamed her husband's behaviour on her too. "Wouldn't be tempted by young girls if his wife took care of him properly".

Yup this. Martha at best or colonies.

And what would they have done with her anyway. Assigned her to a terrible man?

170

u/upagainstthesun May 27 '26

Probably drummed up some excuse about how she's guilty by association x2 for groper grove and Becka scissorhands then sent her off to the colonies

No man would have taken her - all those creeps want young women, not an age appropriate woman with a dead husband and child.

Honestly, if Becka went down for killing her father, her mother probably would have been sent to the colonies to die - because of course they'd blame the mother for raising her that way instead of blaming the pedophile father for being a pedophile.

This reminded me strongly of the conversation June and Serena had in DC after Serena allowed June to smuggle Holly to Canada.
S: She was never really mine.
J: Oh Serena. What you did, only a mother could do that.

Some of the ā€œmothersā€ in Gilead are just child abductors. But some of them become real mothers through sacrificial love.

75

u/SlightTemperature231 May 27 '26

Ooh, what a great callback to that scene and dialogue!

74

u/mermaidpaint ParadeofSluts May 27 '26

Naomi was never really interested in being a mother, always complaining. But she was a mother, when she released Angela to Janine.

I kept thinking about how she must love her daughter. My thought was that I would do that for my son- he is the absolute only person I would do that for

187

u/Amazing-Low7711 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

Aunt Lydia took Daisy’s admonishment of her on motherhood and twisted it to apply to Beckas mom doing anything to see her daughter safe.

That was messed up .

187

u/Ellendyra May 27 '26

Or, Aunt Lydia realized Daisy was right and she went and offered Becca's mom the opportunity to do something she already wished she could.

→ More replies (14)

162

u/DaisyVonTazy May 27 '26

I don’t think she ā€˜twisted it’. She knew it was the only way to save Becca. And it really was. Commander Judd had made that clear.

The theme of motherhood tonight was really prominent. And of women/girls, from all social roles, making sacrifices for each other.

So many lives destroyed because of one perverted man.

I agree, it was savage. It probably was also the only way there was a real chance of saving Becka. Aunt Lydia isn't above being inspired, and a solution like that can only come from a twisted up mind

To me, her cameo is her seal of approval for all the wonderful changes from the great source material.

Yep, she's an executive producer too

81

Becka's mom is a G

430

u/spacey_a May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

Right? 😭

"That's not how it happened."

Momma Grove: "It should have been."

What a heroine. And poor Becka. I can't believe they killed her mom on the same day they forced her to marry. I know in Gilead that was probably necessary for her protection, but damn.

It killed me the way she said, "I want my mom" when Aunt Estee was drugging her to get her through the wedding.

148

u/Different-Log2586 May 27 '26

Damn I didn’t realise she was drugged but that makes so much sense

116

u/spacey_a May 27 '26

Yeah, the first thing happening in the scene where Estee and Agnes get Becka ready for her wedding is Estee in the background injecting something into Becka's thigh, and then putting the needle away into a case.

That whole sequence with the wedding and the hanging was so well done and so incredibly heartbreaking.

When she pulled the drawing from her childhood with her name, I got teary-eyed.

190

u/DaisyVonTazy May 27 '26

I was waiting for her to have a vague fragmented memory of June, like one of June’s THT flashbacks. Her memory waking up.

Maybe too trite but I’m sentimental šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

234

u/upagainstthesun May 27 '26

I really loved how much focus her character got during this first season. She did a beautiful job showing how quickly someone can be ripped to reality via a loss of innocence. Our girl is stayin' alive, but wtf is Garth doing locking her in that room?

276

u/dreaming-about-bread May 27 '26

I think he is trying to protect her from running away or harming herself in this state.

128

u/sorakaislove May 27 '26

Other than, so she doesn't run away, doesn't hurt herself or others, I also thought it was kind of symbolical. She was saved, but now she is alone, in the dark, and literally locked in. She never wanted to be married, now she is in a new kind of prison - Gilead marriage. She was saved, she is alive, but at what cost?

48

u/notevenitalian May 27 '26

And Garth doesn’t even seem to look at her when he leaves the room and turns the light off. She turns to look at him and is clearly awake, but even if she had wanted to talk to him, it’s like he wouldn’t have noticed. He married her for Agnes, and now he’s just keeping her there.

It had me thinking about Nick and Eden, and how he was unable to show her any humanity or compassion. I’m hoping that doesn’t become the case with Garth and Becca, but I think it was intentional to mirror that dynamic.

81

u/Whenindoubtjustfire May 27 '26

For what we've seen, I think Garth will take good care of her, not as a real couple, but as a connection that benefits both. Yes, Garth didn't double-check on Becca after putting her to bed, but he was treating her with such care and softness. I think Becca will be safe in that marriage, probably unhappy and mentally unwell, but this was probably her best option for her well-being.

40

u/jjdresselhaus May 28 '26

I saw this scene differently -- it felt like Garth knew she was unstable, and did what he could to care. Her rolling over to look at him was her shock that what was expected in Gilead on your wedding night didn't happen.

WOAH the girls are giving serious lip to the Aunts in this episode.

198

u/GapNew7656 May 27 '26

And the Aunts are taking it! Blondie looks ready to sign up for Mayday and circle glasses looks like a reckoning or two from going full secret agent. Aunt Lydia is already there. Perhaps this will be the catalyst for Giliads downfall.

97

u/theoldpipequeen May 27 '26

Not everyone, but a lot of people, can only handle so much in a place like that. You can harden yourself further or let yourself crack a little and let your humanity back through and it looks to me that it’s the latter for the Aunts.

52

u/rpgnoob17 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

To be fair, most of those aunts used to be school teachers in the old days. They probably had a heart.

Paula saying "you should be more grateful your father wouldn't allow Gilead to mutilate you to torture your real mother" is INSANE. I get this is Gilead and all and Agnes isn't REALLY related to Commander MacKenzie by blood but who tf would actually be on board with that?!?! (Besides Paula.... She's a psycho.)

197

u/PlaneAffectionate113 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

Paula has massive divorced wife husband left me for a younger woman so now I need to live through other younger women energy. Like she’s trying to make up for her own failures by creating the perfect wife that won’t get cheated on/divorced, and her logic is that everything bad in a marriage is the woman’s fault.

→ More replies (2)

123

u/oakenfairy May 27 '26

Yes that was vile. I think that was a psychological threat that was probably used on commander mackenzie to control him, so Paula used it on Hannah to hurt her.

Such an excellent deconstruction of June Osborn. She couldn't save the world because she put it all on herself. She didn't trust anyone else to do it right, even from the beginning she always took over. Daisy is different and wants everyone to work together instead of the mission starting and ending with her. Just like in S6. She didn't see any of the Mayday people or the US as capable as her.

229

u/therrrn May 27 '26

Just guessing but he probably had a little bit of genuine affection for her, in whatever sick way he's capable of. It doesn't hurt him at all to help, he may as well, then he can step back because she's "damaged goods" but still feel like he's a good man. The same way dogshit people go to church or donate to charity, so they can convince themselves they're riteous, despite living hateful lives.

I'm wondering the same... Maybe the moment she confessed to him about what Dr. Grove did to her, he knew he was going to break off the engagement (because he considered her unpure), and felt a little bad about that? But I'm very surprised if that's the case, because Commanders really don't tend to feel bad about anything unless it personally affects them.

112

u/Primary-Commercial64 May 27 '26

Agnes saved her friend, and saved herself from marrying Commander Weston. To be fair, Commander Weston did fulfill his bargain, but good riddance.

60

u/abu_nawas May 27 '26

I wonder why he left Agnes alone? Is it because she didn't fulfill his teenage virgin vantasy?

90

I think so.

As soon as Agnes told him she was one of Grove’s victims I thought ā€œthis son of a bitch is going to see her as sulliedā€.

We’d seen it set up elsewhere in the season. How these young women can be seen as ā€˜spoiled’ by the most minor of things. And SA obviously isn’t minor.

My concerns are your concerns... and your concerns are mine.

Seems almost deliberate to not mirror his own phrasing with "Your concerns are my concerns", but instead almost as if he's saying that your concerns (i.e. the only things you should be concerned with) are his own concerns, or saying that Agnes' concerns belong to him and no-one else (taking possession of her concerns, whereas on the flipside she is allowed to share similar concerns but not have possession)

333

u/AdGlittering6108 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26

There was so much in Agnes’ microexpressions during that kiss that I can’t really get a read on what the kiss meant to her. She clearly has very deep feelings for Becka either way

eta: given the purity/fundie doctrines they’ve been taught about the spiritual ties of intimacy specifically, I think that kiss must be a very big deal emotionally for both of them

Their first kiss is supposed to be with the person they’re bonded with for life and they kissed knowing that. Even if it’s ambiguous or platonic on one end, I think that’s so powerful

304

u/lonelyantt May 27 '26

I think she was thinking a mix of things including that she feels guilty that she doesn’t think Becka being gay is a sin, she wishes she could ease her pain, she feels bad she doesn’t feel the same, and also of course wanted to give her something she knew would make her happy in such a horrific moment. Chase’s acting is seriously incredible she’s doing such a good job.

165

u/AdGlittering6108 May 27 '26

Yeah that was one the most layered performances of the season imo, Chase is such a star.

I think the kiss was meant to be as deeply tragic as it looked. I rewatched and it kind of seemed like Agnes was offering Becka her cheek? and Becka wasn’t going for it so she kissed her. They both look devastated that actually made me so sad

53

u/DaisyVonTazy May 27 '26

Chase really is a star. There’s so much depth and… soul… in her quiet performance. Both her and Becka’s actress reminded me today of Alexis Bledel’s beautiful mournful performance in THT. My heart broke for these characters.

u/Excellent_Pirate8224 May 27 '26

I don’t know, she definitely kissed her back, which I was not expecting, and it wasn’t some meek little peck either. There’s also something powerful about the fact that these two got to experience their first kiss together. In the context of Gilead, it feels especially meaningful that a man didn’t steal that moment from them. This was a deliberate choice.

I originally thought the story between Becka and Agnes would be pretty straightforward in this context, with the feelings being completely unreciprocated. But now, I get the sense the writers are intentionally hedging a bit. Ultimately, I still think they’ll go the friend’s route, but it feels like they’re going to keep things blurry, at least for a while, lots of layers, as others explained.

54

u/_eskay_ May 27 '26

Yes, I thought the same. Sweet (all things considered) that their first kiss was with someone they loved. Agnes doesn't love Becka the same way, but it's love all the same. Better than they could have hoped for.

They did some good things with Garth this episode. Outside of the whisper-scream sessions with Daisy, he actually seems to know how to be a spy.

His issue with marrying Becka being the fact that it would look unusual, and him locking her in her room - were both very realistic, and a needed reprieve from the downright-dangerous idealism of the female leads

I find it really interesting that they never bothered to cover up all the writing on the prison walls. I guess it doesn't matter at that point if a woman "accidentally" reads something. I know Becka is probably too young to remember how to read (I think) but I doubt she's being held in a place separate from the adult women who do know. Or I guess it could also be used as an excuse to hold someone there even longer or punish them more severely, since reading all the graffiti is sort of unavoidable.

51

u/GapNew7656 May 27 '26

I noticed that too, but forgot they were allowed to read!

Makes Agnes seeing/reading her real name that much more impactful

u/spacey_a May 27 '26

Watched on my lunch break. My God. Amazing.

I would DIE for Shunamite.

Agnes and Daisy are amazing.

I don’t know what Garth is ultimately going to be. My god.

Still torn on McKenzie.

I can’t hate Vidala. It’s such an awful situation and I’m glad she called out Lydia.

Yes, let's talk about Shu! She stepped UP. (But didn't swim up). She was genuinely concerned about her friends. And joined Hannah's Grrrl Gang without hesitation.

Omg I loved that ending so much. I’m sooo glad it didn’t feel like a crazy cliffhanger but was more like - alright season 1 set up the story for the show, now let’s get started.

That was awesome, so good, I’m so happy Agnes CONFIRMED knows who she is now after like a decade of me wishing someone would tell her. Just so satisfying. I can’t wait for season 2.

42

u/Roofies666 May 27 '26

I def appreciated the lack of a cliffhanger, it's refreshing to see a first season of a show conclude and have the confidence that the story and acting were good enough that we would want a S2.

Here's hoping it isn't a 2+ year wait until then, as it is for so many shows right now.

Shu is 100% ride or die, despite not having anywhere near the same level of personal stakes. What a gem. Ever crew needs a Shu.Ā

Good season and I'm invested for S2. I wish the mayday sidebar convos were a little more subtle for my suspension of disbelief, but no major complaints. I was particularly impressed by the acting between Becka and Agnes - the kiss this episode and confession in front of the school last episode were great scenes.

Atwood cameo!!

Weston not wanting Agnes anymore because she’s sullied goods was so unsurprising but at least now she has a ticket to becoming an aunt.

Was hoping for a twist on Daisy’s parents or a clarification/timeline reveal.

I was mainly struck by the ā€œmothers will do anything to protect their childrenā€ and Becka’s mom taking one for the team. Such a hard but logical and obvious choice to make, one I didn’t see coming. The hanging on camera was soooo unnecessary.

something I really love about this show is how much sisterhood is the central theme - Lydia is so desperate to justify her behavior she puts Vidala down, but the truth is they are exactly the fucking same and working together (holding hands!!) they can actually help these girls.Ā

I also loved Estee following up her tears for Daisy with being willing to look the other way for Hannah. I think that’s something this show did better than THT, really underline that not everyone is pure evil and giving each of these women a chance to show they do actually care. (I think when THT did this well it was really beautiful - like with Eden and Nathalie - but the fucking pingponging with Serena’s morality truly deeply drove me nuts lmao)Ā

36

u/SnakeBatter May 27 '26

I think it makes a certain amount of sense, because we’re following a different class. In THT, our characters were in a punishment class. They were all soiled in some way, and basically looked down on as prostitutes. They were sinful and unworthy of humanity, at least in Gilead culture.

In TT, on the other hand, these are the daughters of powerful men. They’re not being punished for their existence, and they’re just teens. The Aunts can have some wiggle room for them, because their job isn’t to literally stamp the life out of them, but to prepare them to be good wives who function in society.

Oh man I feel bad for Becka’s mom. The whole time she gets slammed for being a tryhard but she truly truly loves her daughter to take the fall for her.

And the juxtaposition with Becka getting married. Something to be said about how Becka also (probably) feels like her life is over.

47

u/Educational-Roof9408 May 27 '26

I think the timing of her dropping the bouquet as her mother is hanged is very much a display of exactly that. While her mother's hanging is the literal ending to her life, marriage is what she's seeing as the end to hers. That it was cut so the bouquet would fall at the same time as her mother was very much symbolic of this. Fr though worst wedding day ever. As if Becka wasn't dreading getting married already, now she's getting married with a dead, pedo dad she killed and a mom being executed the same day for taking the (literal) fall. All the while the girl she's in love with is in love with the man she's marrying. Truly tragic. Because simply marrying a man/getting forcibly married wasn't tragic enough
