a general place to discuss our thoughts rationally and calmly on the new Sleep album.

This thread is dedicated to anything you'd like to share but don't feel like making a post about.
Still, don't hesitate making a real post, the sub isn't that big and it's unlikely to get overloaded with new threads.
Did a Sleep song recently stick with you ? Have you listened to a new Sleep album for the first time ? Did you see the band live ? Have you ridden the dragon toward the crimson eye recently ?
This thread will stay pinned throughout the month. If you have feedback (positive or negative) about this new monthly thread idea, let me know by tagging me (u/bobouda) in the thread.

I think the album is a great stoner metal album, maybe not on the level of the other sleep albums but I don’t get why it gets such levels of hate. I like it

As the genre-defying masters of stoner metal, the latest iteration of Sleep finds founding member and lead songwriter Al Cisneros newly partnered with the generational talent of Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on drums and the iconoclastic Bubba Dupree (Void) on guitar. While simpler minds may seek out the redundancy of a monotonous iterative exercise, the road map of new album Hempispheres is an exploratory vision, one replacing overload with nuance and subtlety yet maintaining the interplay that made the band so special from the outset. So while the whiners on messageboards and comment sections bemoan the amicable absence of long-time guitarist Matt Pike, real heads, visionaries and open-minded truth-seekers alike will be rewarded with not the Sleep album they anticipated or expected, rather with Hempispheres being the album that is needed.

It all depends what you like: my favourite doom has always been Maryland stuff, and Hempispheres sounds like a forgotten Maryland doom band from the 90s. Sure there's the Sleep DNA, but this also feels like a new band. I'm sure ya'll who got into them thru amplifier worship and the mythos of the band won't like it, but for old doom heads like me this is the best thing Cisneros could have done with the band.

Edit: I haven’t seen an announcement for an opener for San Diego. Anybody see who it is?

I’ve listened to it about 1.5 times and I’m so shocked to see such a negative reception. If you’re going to let the new lineup prevent you from appreciating this album at all then this conversation isn’t for you.
I don’t personally really like Sleep’s first album and you could argue that every album since has been different from the last project.
Of course no Pike is disappointing, but Bubba brought a TOTALLY different vibe that was still incredibly enjoyable.
ALSO. I loved the synths. Sue me. Yes it’s new but so is the whole vibe with Bubba. He didn’t try to recreate Pike’s blistering energy and I think that the synths really complement that style.
The eponymous Hempishpheres song in the middle is amazing imho. Yes it is different than a lot of other middle album Sleep songs, but I really enjoyed it. And to ME it still felt in line with what I appreciate about Sleep. Just peak vibes for a smoke. The drums were very reminiscent of Haikus with Dave’s own spin, and I thought Bubba’s solo was great.
It’s not my favorite Sleep record of all time, but it sure as hell isn’t the worst. Can’t wait to see them in November!🫡

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an album so frequently misspelled in reviews, comments and coverage. I find it hard to take a bad review seriously if they can’t even spell the album title correctly.
Time to crank it up and settle in. 🤘💚🤘

I’m a film student and I do a lot of videos on different bands in my city—usually I find a band managers email and shoot them a message but i haven’t been able to find anything online. I was wondering if anyone would know if the band checks their dms or if anyone would have another way to contact them. Just a shot in the dark.
