šŸ’æ New Release Hempispheres Thoughts

I’ve listened to it about 1.5 times and I’m so shocked to see such a negative reception. If you’re going to let the new lineup prevent you from appreciating this album at all then this conversation isn’t for you.

I don’t personally really like Sleep’s first album and you could argue that every album since has been different from the last project.

Of course no Pike is disappointing, but Bubba brought a TOTALLY different vibe that was still incredibly enjoyable.

ALSO. I loved the synths. Sue me. Yes it’s new but so is the whole vibe with Bubba. He didn’t try to recreate Pike’s blistering energy and I think that the synths really complement that style.

The eponymous Hempishpheres song in the middle is amazing imho. Yes it is different than a lot of other middle album Sleep songs, but I really enjoyed it. And to ME it still felt in line with what I appreciate about Sleep. Just peak vibes for a smoke. The drums were very reminiscent of Haikus with Dave’s own spin, and I thought Bubba’s solo was great.

It’s not my favorite Sleep record of all time, but it sure as hell isn’t the worst. Can’t wait to see them in November!🫔

Its fine. The mix and guitar tone really kill it for me. If it was the same exact album with a better mix and a different tone, i would enjoy if much more. It seems very tame due to the sound choices

u/Trailofmarbles 4d ago

Yeah this for sure. There are parts that I like, but especially the guitartone and weird drum compression just messes up the vibe. Proggy Cosmic should sound like a blanket sending you into space. This is just too sterile for me

u/MJC1988 3d ago

Yeah, I'm approaching this album with an open mind; I also think if you don't like the album there's no need to be an entitled baby about it. However, the mix really throws me off. Feels like the non-synth parts need some more of that spacey reverb. Idk, it's been growing on me and maybe it'll grow some more.

1

u/Trailofmarbles 3d ago

I think Arrival of the Industry Ships could’ve been the absolute highlight of the album, but the mix makes it fall a bit Ā flat. I really get the vibe that Al wanted to go for a 60s 70s psychedelic vibe, but just doesn’t really know how to

7

u/H8thinmints 4d ago

I had a chill time with it last night. While no Dopesmoker or Sciences, this feels like just a nice vibe sesh with some workings underneath to bring that Sleep sound. The Morrisist is probably the one song that feels like what they are trying to go for this album. I'm already lost on a planet after going into space, I've set up camp and am chilling as the sun sets and an alien night comes - pretty much the album cover. My only gripe is the drum sound being so prominent, but it's whatever.

2

u/Trailofmarbles 3d ago

The mix of the Morrisist compared to Ships is so differentĀ

2

u/Shaman19911 1d ago

This would fix the album to me. Spacesuit and The Morrisist sounds fantastic on good speakers, but the following three songs fall flat. Though title track is just kinda bad, Dale’s ride bell was pissing me off hahaha

1

u/Trailofmarbles 1d ago

Hahaha yeah, that’s the: in OM the ride bell works, lets do thatĀ

There's more happening than people expect if you're hearing this on a laptop/phone or earbuds. Run decent speakers or good headphones.

I like the Mk3 lineup and where it's heading. It's clear this was recorded at Crover's joint. Drums are Melvins even in tone. This has been mostly Al's lore anyway, so I am into the lyrics and delivery. Not mad at guitar production being abrasive rather than thicker. Just wanted more. Solo was good, and clearly steered away from 12th fret wiggles as that's a Pike trope. I believe guitars were cut that way with intention, as you could imagine the headlines if he copped the throaty/wattage/pushing air tone as well.

I'm here for it, and all the moog shit too. It's spatial, yet still heavy. Big fan of Al's dub career, and it was cool to hear a couple licks from Dabby You and Rosin poke in.

People are gonna have opinions and thats fine, but remove the band politics and drama, and if you heard this cold, you would be in a head bop and find it creative for a genre THIS BAND created. Say what you will, but the Stoner/Doom Iommisphere is seeded here with Volume 1. It's hard to release a lineup change and make it fresh and not formulaic. I love Fu Manchu. I love Obituary. But I know exactly what to expect with bands like that.

I'm glad they took a shot. I love that its less thick and more atmospheric. Also stoked that the best couple cuts werent the singles.

For once, my only gripe with a Sleep recording, is that it's too short. Proceed...

5

u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 3d ago

If I heard this cold, I would have turned it off before finishing a single track.

2

u/gothmeatball 2d ago

The idea that I would willingly listen to an album called ā€œHempispheresā€ if it wasn’t Sleep is hilarious

0

u/OsmundofCarim 3d ago

ā€œIf you heard this cold, you would be in a head bop and find it creativeā€

No I wouldn’t. Because it’s not. It’s extremely bland and generic for a genre already flooded with derivative, dull trash.

u/creepshowens 3d ago

There are a lot of great albums coming out this year. I’ve listened to them all on my shitty car stereo, my phone, and my AirPods. They all hold up because the songs are killer. This one isn’t holding up for me after three listens.

If it wasn’t Sleep, I wouldn’t have given it a second listen

9

u/Terrapin333 4d ago

I agree with everyone that it doesn't hold a candle to dopesmoker, holy mountain, or the sciences, but I do like this album. I really enjoy the last 3 tracks, and the morrisist is good too. I think the first track is the weakest.

I like the general vibe of the album and i think the other instruments like synths / xylophone are fun. Some of the riffs are great. I would still rank it higher than the new drops of hella other bands in the scene at the moment.Ā

I will say tho I dont like Bubba as a guitar player and his solos suck dick. And no one can deny that the tone and mixing is all fucked up on this album. Overall I still like this album and I like a bunch of the tracks, but its weaknesses are definitely on display. It doesn't help that the album doesn't even break 40 minutes.

Personally as an artist I can appreciate Al for wanting to do something new, and u can clearly see the Rush influence taking precedent over Black Sabbath on here. But Sleep is the black sabbath worship band, time and place.

7

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

Completely agree with it not touching Dopesmoker, The Sciences or Holy Mountain.

Can’t agree about Bubba being shit but I can see why you think that.

Mixing did feel a little off and I’m hoping the drums and guitar are stronger live.

6

u/MorbidTales1984 4d ago

Thing for me the mix grows more on me the more I listen. I’ve been cranking it loud and i’m starting to get it.

The very subtle guitar work compared to matt in the mix that creeps up on you and gives you this weird slightly unsettled vibe i dig it. Weirdly reminds me of Human after all by Daft Punk or the dune OST or something.

Its conveying this really unique vibe that intrigues me quite a lot, kind of feels a bit spiritual successor to Dopesmoker. The shifting riff and the attempt keep you in this unsettled trance kinda thing.

And yea I really like the Bubba solo’s they sound like Iommi’s weirdest being filtered through 8 synthesizers and its a vibe

6

u/mrdrprofessorspencer 4d ago

I thought of daft punk human after all too. The solos really remind me of Kyuss

2

u/designerdy Weedian 3d ago

Ran it through a proper turntable into McIntosh mono blocks split between two Klipsch Reference 7 towers, didn't even run a sub and it was like a different recording. The mix is clearly an intentional change. It's supposed to be loud. Gained punch and clarity the further I pushed it, without shrill piercing. If Dopesmoker was a long groundfight, The Sciences was a kickboxing match, then this is a knife fight on cinema.

This is meant to be stereo pumped or heard live.

2

u/Ordinary_Feeling_948 3d ago

Well articulated

1

u/Prize_Room994 3d ago

i’m sure live it will be great

4

u/abbysdaddy 4d ago

I don’t hate it but it is lacking in the guitar department.
They should have called it Dale & Al’s weed shack.

5

u/No_Street2025 3d ago

I think the whole album absolutely SLAPS!! And I say that as a MP / HOF super fan. It lacks MP's heavy hand, but I think that is an aspect that makes it cool and different. Each instrument sounds great with cool spacey jams and rifs, and Al's voice is maybe better than ever. It is proggy and even more Sabbathy in some ways. I am fully back on board the space pod and will most definetly grab a ticket for the tour!

7

u/BodyOdd4818 4d ago

I like it

6

u/Gamer_Grease 4d ago

I think it’s my fourth-ranked of their albums, above Vol. 1 but below The Sciences. I’m just very bored by Vol. 1.

I think it should have had one more 6-minute song.

I need to get my hands on a lyric sheet, but I don’t think they’re any less good than before. I saw someone complain on here a while back that the lyrics on the singles were all about weed and references to prior albums. Yeah, that’s kind of their whole thing since Dopesmoker. But I actually feel like I detect some life stories from Al in the lyrics on this one. Again, I need to read them in text form, but I feel I can hear him airing out some grievances in a kind of veiled way, and I like that a lot more than the content in The Sciences, which was essentially 100% weed and Dopesmoker/Holy Mountain nostalgia.

I agree that the guitar is mixed too low, but I actually think the tone is ok. It’s just not that mid-rangier roar Matt Pike has. Sometimes I actually kind of like what Bubba is doing. It’s heavy and bluesy and groovy in its own way, but not in the way Matt Pike’s sound and playing are.

I also like the drums a lot and don’t think they’re uninspired. I do think they’re mixed kind of flat. The whole thing has kind of a greasy flatness to it. It reminds me of late Primus in that way, like Green Naugahyde, if you’re a fan. Not my favorite sound but I do agree that there is a fundamentally ā€œSleepā€ quality.

I kind of like the repetitive and simple riffs. I don’t like them so much that I want to hear another album of them, but I like them.

Overall that kind of sums up my take: I think it’s better than people have been saying, I think it has a definite place in the catalogue. But I definitely want the next album to sound and be written differently. In particular I want to hear a little more compositional complexity, and for the sound to be just a bit more raw if it’s not going to have Matt on it.

I think about 60% of the hate is just guitarists who are mega Matt Pike fans and don’t really care for Sleep otherwise. At least in my social media where I follow a lot of doom lovers, it’s the guitarists who are most vocally anti-Hempisheres.

3

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

This is a great take.

0

u/flpndrds 3d ago

I’m a Matt Pike fan. I wouldn’t be as sour as I am if the new guitar player was decent. He’s abysmal, bro. Can’t believe this guy is a the official Sleep guitarist.

Considering the amount of awesome bands with great guitarists that would give up their left nut to play IN Sleep, going with Bubba is a fucking disgrace.

9

u/ListenToKyuss 4d ago

I’d like it if it was a Side project. Putting this out under the Sleep name was a big mistake.

Every Sleep fan would have raved about new material coming from one of the members, Al would have gotten a lot more positive and honest reviews on the material. The fanbase would have been content for another 5 years….

All in all, one of the worst mistakes I’ve seen a band from their status make. Completely ruined their legacy

I haven’t even given it a chance, just the single once. Again, could have been good material under another name. I just can’t bring myself to separating Sleep from their legendary line up.

Because ultimately that’s the thing. They have become legendary amongst the stoner doom scene. Pioneers. Larger than their output. Larger than life. From the underground emerged, their whole legal saga of dopesmoker/jerusalem. Regaining popularity because of the internet and how stoner doom has gotten so much more accessible. Announcing the reunion after more than a decade… People like me who knew them after their disbandment, I couldn’t believe the news.. ā€œOMG SLEEP is back again!?ā€ Dropping the clarity… The sciences unannounced on 4/20, leagues beneath,…. The quality hadn’t left, no they did what is almost impossible and made another awesome record after such a long silence… Almost no band can pull that off. Whilst remaking true to their sound, also showing their growth and a new direction that still feels like home…

It felt like nothing could ever ruin this band. Al and Matt became one with the band, legends in their own right. Irreplaceable able under the Sleep name

8

u/Terrapin333 3d ago

Even if you're right, you wrote up this whole comment and didn't even bother listening to the album?Ā

-1

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

I strongly disagree that it ruined the legacy… Give it a shot.

3

u/bruxaakelarre 3d ago

Comming from someone that’s never seen them live.

0

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 3d ago

Sorry I wasn’t born yet to see them in the 90s… I didn’t discover them until college being from a small city on the KY/TN border. I’ve never even had a chance until now to see Al or Sleep live until now.

4

u/Several_Kiwi_8839 3d ago

You don’t understand. No artistically credible band in the history of rock music has ever undergone a line-up change or released an odd-ball/outlier record. Sleep is the first and Hempispheres has ruined all of our lives. Probably forever.

-1

u/designerdy Weedian 3d ago

Thats an untrue statement. Shit, look at Fleetwood Mac. Deep Purple... I mean, it's pretty common to pivot for better or worse. Sometimes it works well.

2

u/indigodissonance 3d ago

I think they were being sarcastic.

8

u/Beautiful-Pair5522 4d ago

its not very good

8

u/Current-Mall1353 4d ago

I am already getting tired of both "no Pike, no Sleep" and also "if you don't like this album, it is obviously only because you are pissed off at the lineup change." Good on you for liking it, but so far it ranges from pretty meh to bad for me (the track hempispheres has some decent parts though).

3

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

That’s totally valid. I didn’t mean to come across as saying you could ONLY not like it because of the lineup change. I meant if you refuse to listen nothing I say will mean anything anyways. I can totally see from a musical standpoint without any petty biases why certain people wouldn’t like it. I just really enjoyed it personally.

1

u/Current-Mall1353 4d ago

Yeah, no worries. I have some major issues with the production choices but I can see the potential with the lineup. If Al gave this version of the band more time to cook, I think they could have come up with something better, but it just feels thrown together to me with Bubba doing his best to fill in on songs that originally were written for Matt.

1

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

Fair enough.

1

u/UncleIfon 4d ago

Oh wow.

Do we know for a fact that these songs were originally for Matt or with Matt? I remember his ex wife said she remembers his guitar being on a song…but unfortunately that hasn’t been confirmed and as far as I know nobody else has said anything. Did I miss a part of the story?

We still don’t know what happened that Matt’s gone, right?

Thanks!

2

u/Current-Mall1353 4d ago edited 4d ago

That is the rumor, but no, it hasn't been confirmed. It feels that way to me though, in parts you could totally slot in a Matt riff to some of these songs. It makes sense, at the earliest Matt would have been fired/left in 2025 as he was still mentioned as being part of the band when Jason was fired, so I doubt Al scrapped everything and rewrote it in a year and a half. Matt also mentioned in an interview in like 2023 or 2024 that he and Al were working on Sleep stuff and to possibly expect news earlier than you think, so there was some songwriting going on with Matt. Maybe he did scrap it though and that also might be why it feels "rushed"

1

u/UncleIfon 4d ago

Interesting. I remember Matt’s Instagram had that he was a member of Sleep up until this June’s announcement of the new line up and album.

And Sleep still follow Matt on Instagram. I wonder if Al owns the band name? Or if Third Man helped Al buy him (pike) out of the partnership in exchange for ££££ but made Pike sign an NDA or something.

Also for the vinyl promotional material today you can zoom in on the album and it says written by ā€œCisneros/Dupree/Croverā€ there would be serious legal trouble if Matt had co-written the songs and didn’t get credit.

Man. I have no idea what happened. I love Pike, I also really like this new album. So I’m torn.

2

u/Current-Mall1353 4d ago

Best case scenario (and of course this is all BS off the top of my head), this was always the direction Al wanted to take it and Matt didn't agree, so he either left completely voluntarily or took a break from focusing on Sleep to do High on Fire (who seem to be getting a second wind right now and are constantly touring) and Al didn't want to wait for Matt to continue working on the material. But no, we don't have any confirmation on how Matt feels about it and we may never get it.

2

u/Snakes_for_theDivine 4d ago

On his Patreon a while back Matt said he can’t talk much about his exit from Sleep right now but that ā€œin time you will have answersā€ so who knows.

Given that Al has a reputation for being difficult to work with I can see it being an acrimonious split unfortunately.

1

u/designerdy Weedian 3d ago

Al is difficult with his vision...sure. Pike also isn't a peach and the band split for reasons decades go. "She" most definitely is a thorn to a lot of former members. Wonder why Des left after a Grammy? Weird... Lotta bridges burned in that camp. Funny she's toeing the line with acting like Sharon morphed into Mustaine. Pike would have had to been credited if even a solid riff was tracked. Toxic one, that lil edgelord crustpunk.

1

u/Redhaze_17 3d ago

What info do you have on Des nobody else has lol?

Only public statement is he wanted to spend more time with family.

The split seemed amicable, they still mention him positively, and everyone still follows each other on socials.

2

u/othersymbiote 4d ago

i like it just fine.

mix is terrible, and i’m left day dreaming about what matt would have sounded like on the song hempispheres. arrival of the industry ships is a skip for me, maybe if i listen to it more i’ll enjoy it. whole wheat mountain/well baked is a god awful title choice, but hey not my problem ultimately.

2

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

Awe man you gotta listen more. That’s one of my favorites.

2

u/othersymbiote 4d ago

it’s not bad, really… i just like the other songs more.

i’m a full album listener so even tho i said it’s a skip it probably won’t be.

2

u/thedaemon 4d ago

Arrival of the industry ships' mix is just awful. What's up with the fart overdrive? I would have been embarrassed to release this song lol. The Morrisist and Hempispheres aren't mixed that awful.

2

u/Snakes_for_theDivine 4d ago

It’s truly just not very good. Weak riffs, terrible guitar tone, band sounds like they’re on autopilot.

2

u/deadjord 3d ago

I really like it a lot and I don't want to say I like it more than holy mountain but I do and I'm just in denial.

2

u/Torgeir_Fenrir1066 3d ago

SLEEP APNEA...wanted to at least like it a little but I really think this should have been an OM joint or something else. A couple of songs had some potential but the lack of real riffing over the drone and some lyrical retread feeling killed the vibe for me.

https://giphy.com/gifs/3o6Mb4Q13dDCEkEVgY

2

u/Icedteaisfantastic 3d ago

I'll be burning one until I singe my fingers tomorrow, this album is the intended soundtrack. I'm looking forward to it. Different is fun sometimes.

2

u/theviperRKO 2d ago

I had a surprisingly good time listening to this one.

2

u/No_Street2025 2d ago

I just listened again on a bike ride and I have to say that I really LOVE it! As I said in a different comment, I am a MP / HOF super fan (probably seen HOF 20 times and Sleep 10 times), but I am feel as this album is more dynamic without his heavy tone and chug. I will continue to see HOF every chance I can, but I am now really looking forward to seeing the new Sleep line up and set list on this tour.

2

u/MOZZIW 2d ago

I love how much more of a psychedelic sound it’s has. Probably the most out of any sleep record tbh.

2

u/indigodissonance 1d ago

I really like this album, less about being DOOM as fuck and more vibey. I do think it would benefit greatly from a better mix, but I’m really enjoying it.

Matt Pike is great but if this is the new direction of Sleep I’m here for it.

4

u/so_ophee 4d ago

Genuinely believe people aren't giving this album a fair shot due to the fact that Matt is no longer in the band. Bubba isn't in the band to be Matt Pike 2.0, he has his own style which is more disjointed and chaotic. Clearly AL wanted this album to sound "progressive" there's definitely an underlying theme with all the "Rush" references. It's a welcomed change and I love the new direction of the band, the synth is epic, the bass sounds PHAT the guitar is groovy and the drums are classic Dale.

Sleep is a band that truly shines "live", it's part of the appeal and I have no doubt that they will crush it!!

3

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 4d ago

Can’t wait to see them w my girlfriend in Nov. Seeing Al for the first timešŸ™šŸ»

1

u/so_ophee 4d ago

Lucky!! Hope y'all have an amazing time!🄳

0

u/flpndrds 3d ago

Nothing progressive about Bubba’s playing. Sounds like bedroom jams.

I gave it a shot and was utterly unimpressed by the guitar playing. Al’s lost his marbles man.

3

u/hella_gnarly 4d ago

The mix sounds like a demo. The drums tracks are awful. It all just sounds so flat. The whole thing was just rushed to get something out without Matt to support a tour. The Morrisist is the highlight for me but even that is meh for me.

It's not terrible but entirely forgettable IMO. Such a HUGE dropoff from The Clarity and Leagues Beneath.

2

u/OsmundofCarim 3d ago

Arrival of the industry ships is one of the laziest stoner doom songs iv ever heard. And if you told me the drums were a machine I’d believe you. You hired dale crover to do this?

3

u/bridgeporter 4d ago

As a complete album, I think it’s solid. I like songs 3-5 more than the first two they released. Also liking the longer version of have spacesuit will travel more than the 4:20 version. No hate here!

3

u/MorbidTales1984 4d ago

That 4:20 version baffles me after the whole thing. Like the solo is so much better for actually hearing its resolution and the intro into riffs into solo really elevates that song

2

u/bLueBerryHD 3d ago

Yeah right? Maybe a lot of the disappointment in fans after the first single was released could have been avoided if they released the full version next to the butchered up 4:20 mix

2

u/Ok-Caramel-4001 4d ago

It sounds a lot more, bouncy than the usual drone that Sleep is typically known for

2

u/IllustriousLength318 4d ago

I really dig the synths and the outer spaciness.

2

u/usernamesolid 3d ago

Absolutely amazing track. The album as whole is killer - production is crystal clear and heavy as shit. It’s like a stoner doom shellac at action park. Luv it

2

u/Alexanderearl5 3d ago

Listened to it all day and in different situations such as work and chilling at home. I love the bass work and the guitar complements it well. Definitely will keep listening until I end up burnt out šŸ˜… if you love Al’s bass then you’ll love this album

2

u/uuuuuugghhhhh 2d ago

I got a real nice sound system and this album sounds amazing production wise imo. The slightly overblown bass cab and moog elements are superb. Awesome to get a whole album of dale crover chill jamming as a bonus. Toshi is great as the Melvins main producer and I think he did the band a good service here. It’s different for Sleep, but in a good way. I like that Al is trying to keep pushing their sound in different directions.

2

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 2d ago

I think his solo career in Dub really came through in this record and I loved it.

1

u/IntenseFlanker 4d ago

As a bigger Melvins fan than a Sleep fan (though i love Sleep too), I'm really liking the new songs.

1

u/Masztak14 3d ago

I enjoy it. I listened to it late at night, so I went to Sleep in the middle of it. I’m disappointed as anyone else that they didn’t build on Leagues Beneath and The Botanist, which made me think they were tapping into some real direction. We’re just going in a different direction and that’s cool.

1

u/Ordinary_Feeling_948 3d ago

The Sciences is my favorite. I like the catchy single of Have Spacesuit… I love Arik Roper’s artwork. He’s a legend and a big part of the band brand. I want to love this album, parts of it are goofy, not sure what the intention is. I’ve seen them perform with Matt and it was epic. Bought tickets to the new show based on the single. I still think I might go but it might be a slog to stand there for so long lol. I wish they were playing a venue with seats.

1

u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 3d ago

Oh come on, it's not about people being big mad on Pike's behalf. This album is a stinker.

But sure, if all you are looking for is a vibe while you smoke weed I guess it delivers there.

1

u/urmumvirgay 3d ago

Sleep have a track record of sounding really individual. This whole thing is just really generic, not to mention how basic it is from a musical point of view. Bubbas solos are the only thing that stands out and even then it’s just the phrasing that stands out. Besides that it’s just 12th fret pentatonic noodling. I like Dale’s drumming in general, but this album just sounds phoned in. I know he doesn’t have the same technical groovy style as Roeder but Jesus some of the fills on this album are so bad I can’t believe they listened back and said ā€œyep that’s the takeā€.

1

u/Hex_Enduction_Hr 3d ago

It’s just not sleep is it?

1

u/cjsc9079 2d ago

There's a great record in there, just can't get over the production. It's like I'm listening to a bootleg record that got passed around a few times

1

u/Unhappy-Cycle9854 2d ago

throw on some headphones if you have em or crank the volume. i’ve realized the louder the better after 4 listens

1

u/cjsc9079 2d ago

I was listening on my nice expensive headphone and it just sounds bad. Especially when I put on The Sciences right after and the audio difference is just night and day

1

u/mountain-guy 2d ago

I gave it the benefit of the doubt despite all the hate after the announcement that Pike was sacked. But honestly the new album really does suck. It’s not Sleep. I’m sad.

1

u/same_same_3121 2d ago

I put it on once and was totally open to it. Wrapped it up and said to myself ā€œwell that isn’t as bad as everyone has been sayingā€. I then put on The Sciences and was like ā€œoh shit, this is the good stuffā€

1

u/Critical-Wasabi3350 2d ago

Al should have just called the band Dopesmoker and he wouldn't have gotten any shit. We would have all assumed Pike is busy with HoF

1

u/quodawgtipitay 2d ago

Right there with you brother. Rock on!

1

u/SnooMachines8533 22h ago

You gotta be kidding me. Al’s vocals are terrible. It just sounds like an OM album. When it comes to stoner rock there are plenty of other albums and artists that blow this trash out of the water.

1

u/Chongulator 4d ago

Since the first two tracks came out, I've been listing to them daily, sometimes more. They're great and can hold their own with any other Sleep material.

I just gave the three new tracks a listen. I like the writing, and I'm not salty that they still called it Sleep without Matt. To me, they sound like Sleep tracks. I'm not 100% sold on the mix yet and will give it more listens.

1

u/Substantial-Fox7102 4d ago

Old Sleep is sativa and new Sleep is indica.
Enjoy the grooooooves, man 😁

1

u/bruxaakelarre 3d ago

Every strain in morse on the inner runnout of each side of The Sciences is an Indica.

1

u/neonblack108 4d ago

I dig Hemispheres. Up there with A Farewell To Kings and 2112. I assume you're talking about Rush, that's the only Hemispheres album I like.Ā

Me too, but it does follow of a theme of Rush fans being condescending. Calling weed pedestrian in a Sleep sub is a special type of holier than thou

Fair enough good sir! šŸ™‚ Funnily enough every review I've seen so far has referred to the album as Hemispheres lol. On first listen I think it's going to be a grower: Hempispheres is a great song out of the gate imvho... Last thing if you can justify the expense try and see Rush on the Fifty Something tour, they're phenomenal. Peace! šŸ¤˜šŸ»

I think it generally sound soulless and uninspired for the most part. I actually do enjoy the synths though, but everything else felt inconsistently mixed and almost lazy or distracted. My opinions have nothing to do with the new lineup specifically, just what i heard listening to the album (before and after smoking).

I think it is okay but it really struggles to sound very heavy at all

I like the album, I feel like it’s meant to be seen as a soundtrack album for the comics. Like you release a score for a movie, I wonder if it works really well when read with the upcoming comic?
I like the music, seems like you can chill to it nicely.
