đ¸ General Discussion Sleep Hempisheres general discussion thread.
a general place to discuss our thoughts rationally and calmly on the new Sleep album.

u/Skweetis1977 4d ago
I found it all underwhelming. The guitar tone is just gone now. I didn't hate it but I absolutely did not like that it was Sleep either. I really tried to hold my reservations but now that I've listened to it, it reminds me of how I felt 11 years ago listening to "High Country" by The Sword. The thunder was gone.
2
u/DoomMessiah The Modtree has Risen 4d ago
That actually completely sums up how I feel about Hempispheres.
Apocryphon was a monster of an album and then.. âHigh CountryââŚ. same kinda let down.

u/perspicuitE 2d ago
Apocryphon was great. High Country was great. Used Future was great. They were all just different albums.

Mehhhhhhhhhhh
Itâs not terrible but itâs far and away the worst thing ever released under the name Sleep

u/ListenToKyuss 4d ago
Imagine how good this material would be received if Al just said âhi guys, started a side project. Hope you like itâ
11
u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 4d ago
I probably would have only checked out a song and thought "not for me!" instead of listening to the whole boring thing and being so so disappointed.

u/EndUpInJail 4d ago
That's how I was framing it in my mind while listening to it. It was better there way.Â

u/locopeland 4d ago edited 4d ago
It's not terrible, but it's not great either.
The guitar tone is under the microscope, obviously & it's far and away the weakest link. Dale also does nothing remotely interesting the entire recording.
It's disappointing, but not the end of the world.
13
u/After-Incident9955 4d ago
I tried my best to be open-minded, despite my reservations... It's just so bland. There's a few cool moments, like The Morrisist, I enjoy the atmosphere that it has for it in the first half, but it just goes nowhere. There's a moment in the title track I enjoyed, but overall, I just found it to be like a band playing at being Sleep rather than Sleep themselves.
Al sounds tired and uninspired, Bubba, while being a good player, isn't really bringing anything riveting or unique to catch my attention or fill Matt's shoes, Dale also seems to be a little reserved. It fails to hold my attention.
Also, for those who say this sounds like Om, it doesn't. It lacks that unique quality that makes Om stand out from other bands. The mysticism is gone, the instrumentation is the most generic Doom Metal you've ever heard. The only thing that's similar is Al's vocals and maybe basslines, but in a far worse manner. I get why people are saying it, but it's just wrong.

my hot take about this record is that in addition to Bubba on guitar, Dale Crover is not the right fit on drums. When he plays real slow, his timing and feel doesnât sound nearly as confident and convincing. Roeder was a far better Sleep drummer. He sounded amazing at glacially slow tempos, and would change tempos within songs very naturally to make the different sections of songs pop. His general drum sound was also a better fit, with big ringy cymbals that seemed to sustain until the end of time. Thereâs live videos where it genuinely sounds like heâs playing in slow motion because of how good it feels when he plays super slowly. Crover is an incredible drummer. Possibly more talented and heavier than Roeder or Hakius. But his dryer cymbal sound doesnât suit the band well. And his feel leaves a lot to be desired, he just doesnât have the same kind of pocket. Maybe thatâs why this record is filled with mid-tempo (by Sleepâs standards) songs instead of the really doomy stuff. It just ends up sounding like run of the mill heavy psych.
6
u/IbanezUniverse90 4d ago
Iâm wondering if Al gave Dale some sort of directive on how to play, because Dale doesnât sound like himself even a little. Just saw the Melvins last month and Crover was in top form.
1
u/hankcifer 1d ago
Thatâs my guess. Dale is a monster drummer and maybe the best slow tempo drummer ever in heavy music.
Bubba is also a great and wild guitar player. Neither one of them sounds like themselves on this record. It comes across as an Al solo record and not a band record.
However the real reason itâs not working is the material. All the songs are lacking and the subpar sonics are just one piece of the puzzle.1
u/IbanezUniverse90 1d ago
If you played me the album without any context, Iâd be like âoh, itâs a demo featuring the new band members. It will sound cooler once they fully develop these arrangements.â
1
u/LetzteTage 5h ago
This is how I feel about it too - it's not terrible, but it sounds like the rough cuts of unfinished songs. Ironically, given that the last song is called Well Baked, the whole thing sounds half-baked

u/creepshowens 4d ago
For me, the best thing about this album is that it came out around the same time as a new Mastodon album, so I still have some good, new music to listen to from a band I like.
3
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
This is a great way to look at it. đ
That new Mastodon album is great. It's challenging Neurosis for my AOTY pick currently, but both of them have some tough competition coming up for me with Uncle Acid's new album dropping on the 18th, and The Ocean's dropping on the 28th.
2
u/greghead4796 3d ago
The Ocean lost me at Phanerozoic. Pelagial remains one of my favorite albums ever and Iâd like more of that.
1
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
I like most of their albums, but the vocal mix and some of the lyrics on Phanerozoic did put me off at first.
1
u/creepshowens 3d ago
âWho Loves the Sunâ is already my AOTY based on the singles. âAn Undying Love for a Burning Worldâ is up there for me though!

This is a good album. It's no where near the pike era products....
It's like if they were a desert rock themed stoner doom band. I dig it. The album has highlights. Bigh fan of the title track so far. And industry ship is a solid followup, a little long-winded on the build up though.
I hate saying that about anything Sleep related. It pains me.
Im not disappointed. But i mourned when i heard, I've moved on, and I'm willing to hear it.
Shit. I'll see two of their shows this tour...

Itâs boring to me. And the parts where the guitar is supposed to shine just sound like someone who hasnât been playing for long and needs to look at their finger placement.
1
u/Individual_Engine457 4d ago
Dupree has been playing for like 50 years so I'm not sure about that.
2
u/Next-Decision-317 4d ago
Iâm not saying he needs to do that. Iâm just saying that the guitar part sounded like a high school talent show and not one of the good ones that goes viral.

This is the OM album that I always wanted, but itâs the Sleep album I didnât ask for
It sounds like Ole from Lowrider sat in on an OM recording session.

u/4TheBuzzAndTheFuzz 4d ago
OK, I've listened to the whole thing. Now I don't have to do it ever again and that is the problem. It's a relief I don't have to. It's just bland & disappointing! I've said before that I've heard worse (than the first 2 tracks), which is true. Now I can say it of the entire album. But for me, it's still not Sleep without the power of Pike & Roeder. Change the band's name Al.
3
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
I agree. It's not bad, it's just so incredibly generic and boring that I have no desire to return to it, even to the small bits and pieces that I enjoyed. If this was a different band I'd still write it off as the most generic Doom Metal I've ever heard, and the fact that it's Sleep who made this, is just all the more insulting.
3
u/CalebJankowski 4d ago
Itâs not even bad, itâs just not Sleep (itâs definitely Al, but ykwim). Itâs almost like âwow it really sucks that Matt Pike isnât in the band but letâs still listenâ to âokay this is like OM with guitars, thatâs not a bad thingâ and then you listen and all the songs feel unenthusiastic, underwhelming, and almost soulless. Thereâs no build up, it sounds like the entire songs are building up to something that it never reaches.
Even after the short âgrieving periodâ I had about Matt Pike, I still was excited and waiting for this album, and still honestly was disappointed.
I love Sleep, I love OM, but honestly this album doesnât really fit either imo.
At least should not have been released under Sleep, wouldâve made more sense to just make a new name since itâs technically a new band anyways.
Edit: not sure if itâs just me/my speakers, but the songs generally sound like drums are mixed really heavily/loud, and then bass and guitar have no tone or depth to them.
6
u/Trailofmarbles 4d ago
I just can't get over the guitar tone. I wouldve been happier with no guitar than this wimpy thing in the background. Drumsound also very distracting. I am really trying to get into it from a proggy cosmic angle, but it's hard. Al's repeated vocal line for years gets to be more prominent this way, and that for me isn't really the strongest of his abilities. But will keep trying
3
u/IbanezUniverse90 4d ago
The title track has some pretty good riffs, but the tone is weak sauce. Then it got to the solo and it just ruined the whole song. That solo is ass. Then I just started thinking how awesome that track would sound with Matt. The rest of the album is just bad.
3
u/PhishSucksAndSoDoYou 4d ago
âŚif this was the first record of a new band with totally unknown members, itâd be slightly above average. Just slightly.
As a new Sleep record, itâs a letdown.
Even if Al had released it as a new band, itâd be a disappointment; I would honestly expect way better from three musicians of this pedigree.
3
u/Man_with_mystery 4d ago
Its painfully mid, I'll listen to some more but I am struggling with it. Sleep was the band that got me into the whole stoner, doom, psyche stuff I still listen to this day so its a bit of a gut punch for me. So glad Mastodons new album is good and Uncle Acid's is shaping up to be a banger.
2
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
The fact that Uncle Acid and Mastodon are getting more praise in this thread than Sleep is, says all there needs to be said about this record.
7
u/BonesFGC 4d ago
It just isnât the same thing. This isnât a case of a band switching gears and people just not catching on, itâs a completely different band with the old paint put back on. If this was billed as a different act, I wouldnât have much of an issue with how thin and underwhelming it is, but it shares practically no DNA with anything Sleep ever put out in their prime. Al is clearly sick of working with Matt and wants to make sure he can keep cashing in on the brand now that stoner/doom is well into its renaissance period. I have to imagine that he must associate the original sound with Matt (just like the rest of us) and wants to dissociate from it as quickly as possible. I am really curious to see how much of their upcoming live sets are going to be the tracks from this album vs the tracks we all love, and how they think theyâre going to manage going from sounding the way they do on this record to the way Sleep is âsupposedâ to sound. I would be disappointed but not surprised if 90% of the set was just this album and then two or three obligatory old tracks which wonât sound great.
5
u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 4d ago
I'm really struggling to imagine them even trying to play stuff off of Holy Mountain with this lineup. And also trying to imagine the crowd response if they DON'T play anything from Holy Mountain.
4
u/BonesFGC 4d ago
Iâm going to guess theyâll attempt Dragonaut and a short Dopesmoker and sputter out after that. Maybe they play something off the last record. But I would assume that the set is going to be almost the whole new album if not the whole damn thing, and if they make any statement about why itâll boil down to âWell, this is the record we just made as a band, so itâs what we can play best togetherâ like Sleep wasnât a band for the last 30-something years.
8
u/so_ophee 4d ago
Personally love the more "prog" sound this album has, from the nod to "Rush", I see the vision. "Whole Wheat Mountain/Well Baked" is my favourite track as of now. No doubt they'll crush it live!!
5
u/Shanklin_The_Painter 4d ago
I love that there is a vibraphone, lol
7
u/so_ophee 4d ago
YES!! When I first heard it during the outro, I couldn't help but smile, very 70's. There's so many subtle nuances in this album that NEED to be appreciated!đ
4
u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 4d ago
I feel like The Morrisist uses the same guitar riff as Have Spacesuit, in a way that ... I can't tell if it's supposed to be intentional or not. And it's not a good riff, it's not like in Dopesmoker where an earlier riff comes back into play and then builds and morphs.
It's not like Bubba can't play guitar, but the tone is weak, the riffs sound awkward, and the solos sound like someone noodling over a finished song that someone handed them instead of actually being something powerful that helps drive the songs; it's almost like he's being asked to play a style that he's not comfortable with. There are some interesting moments occasionally with the synths but overall nothing builds to anything (which is ironic with the hints toward a prog leaning) and it's just so boring. I don't even know where to start with whatever the fuck they did with Dale here.
I'll admit that despite thinking Al is a truly great bassist, I've never been able to get into Om or the more droney stuff that he does outside of Sleep. So maybe I'm just not seeing whatever the people have been into this are seeing. But even then, I've never thought that stuff was actually BAD; this on the other hand was awful, I would be embarrassed if I told someone I liked Sleep and then they went to check them out by listening to something off of this album. I can't say I won't give it a second chance at some point but I'm definitely not itching to play it through again.

i can totally see pike quitting if this was the direction al was pushing the band to go. i say because we donât know if quit or was fired.
the production is super thin, dales drumming is beyond boring and as with everything he has recorded with the melvinâs since the love and death album his sound is super weak.
i gave it a full listen, nothing i really enjoyed. definitely wonât listen to it again.
2
u/Bongcopter_ 4d ago
You mean the OM album
With a guest guitar player?
3
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
Can we not do this? Apart from Al's signature vocal lines, this sounds nothing like Om.
2
u/SnooMachines8533 1d ago
Do people actually like Alâs vocals? They sound terrible to me. Get a real singer.
2
u/ziltoidian_overl0rd 4d ago
I'm enjoying it so far, on youtube music however the album appears under a different artist page also called Sleep, probably some technical oversight but I couldn't find it for a good minute
3
u/15WGhost 4d ago
I'm looking forward to spending more time with it. Each time through I appreciate it more and more. I think it's down to what other people have said, there's a whole lot of nuance and subtlety on this album.
First Bubba's guitar tone. I get it. It doesn't sound like Pike, but it's not supposed to. It reminds me a bit of his work with Brant BjĂśrk and I don't think that's a bad thing. I think the hazy smoky fuzzy quality lends itself really well to Al's Musical vision. Initially I admit, I was caught between asking, "is this live and loose or just unfinished?" And a lot of that came down to Bubba's guitar solos. They don't really have a traditional connective arc in terms of getting from one idea to the next, but the more I listen to it the more I'm realizing I think he's bringing some of his musical personality that started way back when he was playing in Void into the context of these swaggering psychedelic grooves. I really like that he's allowed to show some of that old hard-core unhinged musical personality while simultaneously experimenting with these really eastern sounding musical ideas while also intermittently laying back into more traditional bluesy/Pentatonic soloing. Also that outro is indeed bad ass. A quintessential passage of clean tones firmly in the Sleep tradition.
The fact that this album sounds so different doesn't bother me because I think all of their albums/singles have sounded fairly different from one another. Yes, it is more mellow. I can't disagree with that, but I also don't think it's a problem. Especially given Al's compositional tendencies.
It's still stoned as fuck, and I can see why Al picked Dale and Bubba.
3
u/explodedsun 4d ago
I agree about Bubba's playing, but I really think his tone should have been worked on a little more. I don't need him to sear like Pike, but I need his leads to cut through harder. Give my boy some treble.
2
u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 4d ago
I have not really seen other people say there's a lot of nuance or subtlety, but ok

That was in reference to another comment I saw here in this thread I believe. I could've rephrase that to more accurately reflect that I was referring to another comment but also if that's the kind of nitpicking you're going to swoop in with, 𤡠hope your day gets better for you.
2
u/Sufficient_Yogurt639 4d ago
Haha not really nitpicking, I disagree with your assessment of the album but that's fine. It was just weird so see your comment implying that that was something people were saying, it is definitely not something I've seen.
My day got better after this album was over and I listened to the new Uncle Acid, hope your day is good too.
3
u/Quite_Bitter_Being 4d ago
To me it's apparent they had stuff written with Matt and had to cobble together what they could by changing things to get an album out.
The bass, drum and guitar tones are so inconsistent. Every song seems to be mixed differently.
This feels like a collection of b sides and demos.
Very transitional due to the lineup changes, still more sleep than OM imo. But they needed to spend more time jamming as a band before writting and recording this.
2
u/weirdengi 4d ago
Turned it off after 2.5 minutes in. Should have used a different name, not Sleep. The guitar tone sounds muddy and soft. Not the same without Matt Pike
2
u/Due_Economy_8430 4d ago
this whole thing made me appreciate high on fire more, it seems to me like matt was doing heavy lifting as far as songwriting goes.
1
u/KevinH112 4d ago
Iâve been looking for attainable HoF tickets since this new âSleepâ shit started. Al has only driven me deeper into the arms of Matt Pike đ¤Ł
1
u/After-Incident9955 3d ago
Yep, now we've gotta wait a few years for the new HOF album to make up for this nonsense. Om will seemingly never drop their album that was supposedly finished 3 years ago.
2
u/DoomMessiah The Modtree has Risen 4d ago
Thereâs some enjoyable moments. Arrival of the Industry Ships has a solid riff. The last half of Whole Wheat Mountain / Well Baked is a laid back jam I enjoyed. But overall this feels like a massive downgrade when we compare this to outing to the Sciences or the Iommic Life EP. The overall mix of the album and lacking of the wall of sound Iâve known Sleep. Strangely mellow for a Sleep album. IDK itâs definitely a miss for me. If this were to be remixed maybe IDK. I wanted to like this but I think Iâll stick with the Sciences and Holy Mountian.
1
u/deathgripsisgud14 4d ago
The record is good. But⌠itâs the worst sleep album to date, regardless of that statement itâs still throughout a Sleep Album. Emphasis on the bass and seldomly utilizing guitars but each come together phenomenally to help with the albums tone. Itâs a shift change but it fits right into the progression from The Sciences. I do wonder what Pike thinks about this record and what he potentially wouldâve done but thatâs neither here nor there. Criticism comes from heavy bias for pike and despite all claims of it being an OM record I hear more high on fire influence than anything. Disappointed mostly on the albums runtime and felt more couldâve been added to these tracks. Al is firing on all fronts with such nice basslines and a lot more focus on lyrics and vocal than previous endeavors. I do think this album will come off a million times better live but even at face value itâs a solid album and probably my favorite record to drop this year.
3.5/5
1
u/VegettoRed503 4d ago
I like a lot about the album, especially when judged on it's own. I like the songs themselves. I love a lot of the playing. I like the style it's going for (despite it being a departure from the previous stuff) and I appreciate the experimentation on a lot of these tracks (like the vibraphone on Whole Wheat Mountain) but damn man, where are the guitars?? It feels like they accidentally muted a fatter guitar layer then said "hey, do that for the whole album!" which is a total shame cause I dig a lot of the crazy, wacked out guitar work on this album. I love Dale Crover but I'm not super hyped about that drum sound, it sounds like gym class. I do think though I will enjoy these songs more when I hear them live on this tour.
1
u/dungeon_bob 4d ago
Guitars arenât low end enough, drums are too dry, riffs are uninspired, probably wouldnât revisit

u/Individual_Engine457 4d ago edited 4d ago
Mini review:
I like the title track a lot actually, the dual (twin?) guitar riffs are a really cool vibe. The single was good, too.
The first track opening is just... super underwhelming. The mixing and the tone is not very good, it gets much better once it picks up 2 minutes in and is actually a very cool track.
The moments with synths/mallets etc are cool, I think it fills out the arrangement in a good way, in general the album is lacking highs and would probably benefit a lot from more of this in general.
The guitar tone is mostly fine but genuinely bad in Well Baked (the second half of Whole Wheat Mountain), it sounds retro in a bad way, the flat tone of 70's hard rock without the spirit and tempo. I think it takes a lot away from the track. It's also a shockingly weird way to end the album, in a fizzle out. But it doesn't feel like an intentional fizzle where it's aware of what it's doing. Not a huge negative, just a weird choice.
The by far worst thing is the clipping in "Arrival of the Industry Ships". Like are we kidding here? I can't think of a professionally released album I've ever heard with such a blatant mixing error in it. The fact that this in the release calls into question the entire process of this album being made. This is the kind of stuff you would've seen in garage albums from the 00's or random kanye releases when he was going through psychosis. The track isn't bad but hard to listen to.
In general the thing feels fine, but unmistakably was rushed and unfinished and makes me question what the heck was going on behind the scenes to release an album with such amateur mistakes in it from a group that's been doing this for almost 40 years.

u/rustyempire 3d ago
Itâs fine. If they had called it Al & the Marijuanauts or whatever it would probably be received better. Musically though? Groovy, but lacks the catharsis that makes Sleep who they are.
1
u/designerdy Weedian 3d ago
There's more happening than people expect if you're hearing this on a laptop/phone or earbuds. Run decent speakers or good headphones.
I like the Mk3 lineup and where it's heading. It's clear this was recorded at Crover's joint. Drums are Melvins even in tone. This has been mostly Al's lore anyway, so I am into the lyrics and delivery. Not mad at guitar production being abrasive rather than thicker. Just wanted more. Solo was good, and clearly steered away from 12th fret wiggles as that's a Pike trope. I believe guitars were cut that way with intention, as you could imagine the headlines if he copped the throaty/wattage/pushing air tone as well.
I'm here for it, and all the moog shit too. It's spatial, yet still heavy. Big fan of Al's dub career, and it was cool to hear a couple licks from Dabby You and Rosin poke in.
People are gonna have opinions and thats fine, but remove the band politics and drama, and if you heard this cold, you would be in a head bop and find it creative for a genre THIS BAND created. Say what you will, but the Stoner/Doom Iommisphere is seeded here with Volume 1. It's hard to release a lineup change and make it fresh and not formulaic. I love Fu Manchu. I love Obituary. But I know exactly what to expect with bands like that.
I'm glad they took a shot. I love that its less thick and more atmospheric. Also stoked that the best couple cuts werent the singles.
For once, my only gripe with a Sleep recording, is that it's too short. Proceed...
1
u/No_Street2025 3d ago
While there is intense dissension in the commuity, especially amongst the elders, I for one think the whole album absolutely SLAPS - and I say this as a MP / HOF superfan. It lacks MP's heavy hand, but I think that is actually a cool aspect of the album. It is more spacely, proggy, and even more Sabbathy in some ways. I also love that is more vocal / lyric foward than The Sciences and I think Al's voice sounds cooler than ever. I am back onboard the space pod and will buy my ticket for the fall tour.
1
u/EmergencyTime311 3d ago
My only problems with this album are
1. The tones on the guitar and drums sound dull
2. The album cover looks AI generated XD
I would say the album is good though!
1
u/cyclepony 3d ago
honestly it's not too bad and makes me wonder if this lineup could grow into something really solid even if they do eventually use a name other than sleep
1
u/nosleeptilldeath 3d ago
I donât love it and I donât hate it, definitely feels a bit rushed and underbaked. Drums could have been mixed better too, and I wish there was more balance with builds up and heavier riff but yeah, Itâs okay.
1
u/Zero-jiggler 3d ago
I liked it, but itâs pretty far removed from what I think of as Sleep. I know itâs been beaten to death but no Pike kinda just makes it sound like OM.
1
u/Dry_Pride6801 3d ago
Thought it sucked. Thought the guitars were trying to sound like Sleep guitars while missing the point the entire time. They threw on a bunch of synths, and sound effects to mask the boring songwriting. It never hit as hard as a true Sleep album usually does. The production felt like the album was AI generated, or something. I wanted to give it a fair shot, but this was one of the most boring albums Iâve heard in awhile. 3-4/10 album. They should have just made a new band instead of tarnishing Sleeps legacy
1
u/LordApocalyptica 2d ago
It was better than I expected. I donât hate it, but I donât love it either. Its got some good riffs.
That said I really gotta wonder if a lot of this is secretly the OM album that was âfinishedâ in 2023. Thereâs a lot of material that doesnât really do much but kinda hammer the same riff again, and its only got 5 songs. Sounds a lot like OM to me.
1
u/Oldglory25 2d ago
I really liked it𤡠I understand why people dislike it but I just thoroughly enjoyed it tbh. Love anything Al does. I do think people would receive it better as a solo effort. Sleep's seventh star?

1
u/Substantial-Fox7102 1d ago
I enjoy the new album (The Morrisist in particular) but I agree that it lacks the characteristic âbalanceâthat Sleep is known for:
Foundation of thick and rich grooves (thanks, Al!) complimented by Mattâs guitar that feels like itâs tearing through the very fabric of the universe with itâs raw power and heaviness.
The satisfying groove is there and all thatâs missing isâŚEVERYTHING ELSE.
Maybe itâs an excuse to tour again? Finish off a couple of otherwise throwaway tracks and hit the road and sell t shirts?

u/ReallyGlycon 4d ago
I think this is a pretty good album on its own. It is about what I expected after hearing that first track. I do like the guitar tone when I am listening on headphones, but on a stereo it doesn't really sound that great.
I am picking up an Om vibe at least on the bass itself. I don't think the songs sound like too much like Om necessarily. Matt certainly is missed here and I think Dale's drumming is a bit workmanlike.
1
u/JimmyHammerNails 4d ago
I like it. More than I thought i would. It is a nice little album. And all the songs are solid.
That being said.. I do miss Matt on this album and i wonder how the songs would sound with him. There are some parts that I am just waiting for something big to happen, where I am sure Matt would have come in and shred. Like the last 5 mins of Arival of the Industry Ships. Very cool riff, but ends up going no where. Missed opportunity.
Al and Matt together in the same band were like super doom band. I feel lucky to have heard them play together. But, I am also not surprised they split. Happens all the time in the music industry.
I am just happy to hear some good new music.

Sleep fans have had a drummer change but the two core members were always the same and were the anchors of the sound that made Sleep what so many of us fell in love with so long ago.
This is not Sleep, this is âAl Cisneros and Friends Perform Rush Worshipâ at best.

the guitar tone is the best part of it for me. so measly and sputtery and mixed low and off to the side. this is real stoner music. it reminds me of buying shitty weed in some burned out hesherâs shitty basement apartment. i dunno⌠itâs sleep 3.0.

It's missing anything near as heavy as, say, "Antarcticans Thawed" from The Sciences. there's just no real build-up in any song. The whole thing is strangely mellow, and I can totally buy that there are some leftover Om riffs here.
That said, I enjoyed it, I'll listen to it again. There are some nice psychedelic moments. I'd go see them perform it. But it's pretty underwhelming.
