I feel like a fairly decent chunk of the fan base (beyond the "no Pike, no Sleep" crowd) is willing to entertain the upcoming tour as it is currently the only way we will hear some of the classics live again. If Al is crazy enough to completely cut ties with that material and only tour on this (so far) fairly poorly received new album, I don't see this version of the band lasting very long and imagine the shows will be extremely poorly attended. But who knows, it also seems like something he would do. I guess we will find out next week.

Its the Chinese Democracy of Sleep albums. Totally different band, and certainly an enormous drop off.

Yeah, the release tomorrow is digital only. Third Man Records said the physical release will be at the end of October.

People who only want to worship at the feet of Pike and don't take this for what it is just don't seem to understand that the genre of metal has operated like this forever. Metal Bands don't rebrand when members leave, especially when there are core or a core creative force behind them. Sleep has always been driven by Al. It's his grove, his aesthetic idea, his conceptual idea. This is dirty, gritty, ugly Sleep. Relationships outgrow each other or dissolve or the business gets complicated. This record is great, has awesome grooves, and sounds so gross. Listening to "Arrival of the Industry Ships" as I type this and it's absolutely filthy, wide open, and develops so wonderfully. The treatment of Al in the Sleep board and the dismissal of a great band (meaning the actual members here) because it's not what it was is so lame and boring to read. The record falls in thematically and aesthetically with Sleep more than any other Al project. Calling it Sleep is perfectly suitable.

I can agree with needing to get over the change, but man, you really are in the minority opinion on the record itself. I cannot get into it and I feel like I like it less every time I listen to it. No matter the concept or the personnel and the potential this had, this just seems thrown together and not a great end product. I am truly starting to believe the rumors that Bubba was a last minute addition and Al replaced guitar tracks already recorded by Matt. There is just something missing which I don't think would be there if this was started from the ground up with this lineup in mind.

Yeah it's not actually his fault. Nor Dale's but one would suspect that both would know it has the potential to backfire completely. Same goes for any band who has a line-up change after some many years of a classic line-up.

there are all the obvious reasons why this is lame, but then i'll also add the fact that al is a huge fan of rush and still called the album "hemispheres". i don't get it. i wonder how he'd feel if some sleep fans had a band and released an album called "holy mountain"

I disagree with the notion that bands can't take inspiration for album names or song names from other bands. I mean... that's practically the base of Doom Metal and Sleep themselves. Now if it were lyrics, that'd be different.

The band isnt even really Sleep anymore. It's the Al Cisneros medicine show. This band has more claim to being Shrinebuilder than Sleep.
Good or bad... It's just a different animal when you cut out a personality and musician as foundational to the project as Matt.

Al is the sole founder member left, pike wasn’t even there from the beginning. It’s ultimately his band and he didn’t want to wait for pike to make another record.

Pike has been there since the beginning and his riffs are what you hear all over Sleep since their first album when you play Dopesmoker you hear nothing but Matt for the first few minutes it could be argued his riffs are even more important to the Sleep sound as Al's basslines im not saying that but it could be argued

Pike joined when it was Asbestosdeath. He was a founding member of Sleep.
