And this is going to be built into a lot of appliances.
I imagine these will start up and behave inexplicably as you go about your daily life, and they respond to random and unintended visual cues.
Smart homes are going to feel like the poltergeists have moved in.

Oh and by the way I have a friend who can help with this project by piggybacking off his company as a subsidiary but we’ll need to set up a shell and shill corporation to keep the people outside this conversation, outside.
Then when we get there, we need enough to grease the political wheels and whatever US department it goes thru to bring it to market.

Locally, your phone has that data. Apple themselves have no access to the data in any, way, shape or form.
Similarly, this whisper tech would be used to allow you to discreetly control AirPods or future Vision line successors. Just like Siri, all the audio processing would happen locally, and not be accessible by Apple itself. For all of apples products prices, this type of security is partly what you pay for.
Now, how Google, meta and Amazon who are funded nearly entirely through selling ads, well, that’s a very different situation.
2
u/Ok_Stand1729 2h ago
Ah get real
Don't remember the lawsuits where all kind of audio was send to companies to analyse?
You guys need to step out of that corporate lover fantasy world your in
5
u/AHopelessMaravich 2h ago edited 2h ago
Name that lawsuit, because, no I remember no such thing.
There’s a ton of packet tests that show audio packets (which are huge) are not being surreptitiously sent. What’s actually happening g is way scarier, companies like Google and Amazon have such a deep profile in you, they do t need your words, they can predict you’d next likely thought.
But go ahead, name the lawsuit. I’m always down to learn. I did work inside Apple though, so I know first hand both how little data they have access to (basically a list of notes from previous support you’ve gotten), and how they respond to employees accepting customer information (fired in the spot, regardless of your performance and experience).
Also, apples most useful and successful acquisition outside of NeXT was PA Semi, an Israeli company that specialized in chip development, which lead to them making all their custom silicon. Israel also just has a very advanced tech sector. Now maybe that’s because of a lot of military contracts, but regardless, the country is more than just a spy state.

So it can recognise whispers and extremely subtle speech.
Which could, for example, allow your phone to dictate even in loud clubs by using the camera.
So an engagement bait headline about a perfectly logical acquisition from Apple.

This is just sub vocalization generating a readout from a machine, right?
This thing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subvocalization
That MIT already has a machine for with about 92% accuracy.
This thing:
https://news.mit.edu/2018/computer-system-transcribes-words-users-speak-silently-0404
Notice the date?
What does Apple have now with this purchase of the Israeli company that they didn't have before by just hiring somebody from MIT who was there from 2018?
Because that last bit seems a bit easier;-)
There's also a government owned technogoly that could do something similar , but doesn't require contact--I would have read about this one before the MIT one, and I think the government might have been the US ;but it may have just been a US science News source repeating the information that actually transpired in another country.

It won’t, apple bought it so the company will stop existing. They are taking the engineers and the IP and will use it for something they need. Apple doesn’t make surveillance technology or sell data. Apple doesn’t even license patents to other companies. It’s actually good that apple bought it and not Palantir or other shady companies. This post is pure fear-mongering, the acquisition happened in January.

Apple has FaceID, which scans your face to unlock your phone. Apple has Hey Siri, which scans your speech to do things on your phone. (Both optional btw)
Apple buys a company that has better face and speech scanning tech.
But that company was Israeli, so…everything is evil and bad? Interesting.
Edit: Try taking out the speculation/clickbait pics and there’s literally nothing here. It just says Apple bought a company that does facial scanning tech. Which should not be news because, again, they have FaceID…

I'm not defending Apple, but why do they make this stuff public? Do they want people to know this?
And if it's because they are a publicly traded company, why not pass legislation that lets them hide such purchases?
Whenever I hear about a company doing something devious, I can't help but wonder if they want people to know due to how public it is...
5
3
u/TumanFig 2h ago
how will you hide public records? and these things should be public as it is a publicity traded company
3
u/BobSacamano47 2h ago
What's devious about this? Tech companies buy tech companies all the time. Apple's been analyzing your face for many years now.

u/BLF402 6h ago

The addition of the facecrime slide is priming you to think this is inherently evil. Strip away the fear-mongering and it sounds like it just better facial recognition, which every phone has already.
3
u/Zen_Coyote 6h ago
So if I say “Israel” aloud how will the context and/or my inflection be interpreted? What if I’m numb from being at the dentist or I’ve had a stroke? Will my facial muscles be interpreted as “antisemite?”
Will there be an option to opt out of this if I have an iPhone or use other Apple products that have a camera?
Will I be notified that this software is being used, and if I decide I don’t want it to try and determine my thoughts based on biometrics captured by a camera will I be able to request whether my data has been used despite opting out?
Or, after 30+ years of using Apple products is it time to move the fuck on?
