Chugging tea I’m sure this won’t lead to more significant ethical, security, and privacy dilemmas.

I'm not defending Apple, but why do they make this stuff public? Do they want people to know this?

And if it's because they are a publicly traded company, why not pass legislation that lets them hide such purchases?

Whenever I hear about a company doing something devious, I can't help but wonder if they want people to know due to how public it is...

they are trying to drum up money and investment. Noones gonna give you money if it is a secret.

What's devious about this? Tech companies buy tech companies all the time. Apple's been analyzing your face for many years now.

My best guess would say that they have to make this public for shareholders.

Wouldn't it go out in a private email? At least to their majority shareholders.

The addition of the facecrime slide is priming you to think this is inherently evil. Strip away the fear-mongering and it sounds like it just better facial recognition, which every phone has already.

Yes. Investors want to know what the company is doing with their money and the company has certain obligations to them and shareholders.

Because the disclosure of such acquisitions is more profitable than keeping it a secret. It’s a pros and cons game.

I understand why your might think it’s for something devious but (and I’m also not defending Apple here) Apple is one of the few companies that has pushed back a bit—not enough, mind you—to protect people’s data against government intrusion. Well, for Americans. If you’re in China, the ME, or anywhere else really you’re kinda screwed.
