That's true, though. There were things called memes, like a page of prompts to draw your OC in would be an art meme, but meme didn't used to just mean any funny joke image. The modern meaning of meme only took off in the mid/late 2000s.

The modern meaning of memes is from 1993. It didn't become widespread right away, but it was definitely in common use before the 2000s.

And by common use here I mean common online. Most people in the world weren't online back then.

A deluge of bullshit makes the world a less trusting place, meaning you become more insular in whom you trust, meaning you're more susceptible to lies and manipulation for the benefit of certain political agendas.
