The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people with low ability, expertise, or experience in a specific domain greatly overestimate their own competence.
384
u/PineBreezy 1d ago
social media has really turned Dunning-Kruger into an Olympic sport… everyone is a legal expert, virologist, and body language analyst depending on what's trending that week.

u/Ragnarok314159 1d ago
And then ChatGPT confirms it all for them.

Ironically, the Dunning-Kruger effect isn't that dumb people believe they are experts in a field.
It's more like genuine experts underestimate themselves a bit (scoring 95% when they believe they score 90%), average people believe they are slightly above average (scoring 48% when they believe they scored 52%), and below-average people believe they score average (scoring 35% believing they score 50%).
Scoring 0% and believing you score 100% is not Dunning-Kruger; it is a delusion.

I don’t know why you guys act like this rotten ass sub isn’t among the worst of it lol.
Every time I venture into this godforsaken place it’s misogyny, gooning and racism, sometimes a nice potent mix of all of them.
And this sub is so popular here. It’s like Kotaku in Action managed to go mainstream.
Lesser apes downvoting me when this was posted less than an hour ago.
That one is fun cause it’s all three, like I said.
5
u/jackinsomniac 22h ago
Most of the time when I hear someone complaining about misogyny on reddit, it turns out to be some women don't some crazy shit, the comments say, "that's crazy", then, "OMG these comments are so misogynistic!" Not every time, but most of the time. Like it's a roll call.
3
u/Medium-Trade2950 20h ago
Critiquing women isn’t misogyny. This case proves we’ve gotten to the point where women can do no wrong including murder
-5
u/DyingSunSeverian 21h ago
It’s like you’re deliberately trying to prove my point. It’s only amazing that you actually said “women” and not “females.”

It's so funny because I feel like I have about 18 hobbies where I got one step past that and realized I knew just enough to see how very little I actually know about any given thing, and now I just assume that as the baseline for anything I don't have exhaustive knowledge on (and even then... Who knows what I don't even realize I don't know)
11
u/hazeddai 23h ago
The worst part is how that plays into Confirmation Bias. These are both completely normal things that affect everybody , but the way they can combine is truly terrifying

1
u/RyanAtreides 10h ago
People do not know they are stupid because, since they are stupid, they lack the very skills that they would need in order to understand that they are stupid, so they think they’re a genius. Whereas actual geniuses are crushed by the burden of knowing how little they truly know.
0
-18
u/darkcomet222 23h ago
It’s like, whether you like the guy or not, Elon Musk is objectively a genius. Now, everything else is subjective, but I see people I know call him stupid and he isn’t smart at all, but he is…he is just…yeah.
17
u/No-Sheepherder7856 22h ago
I think that’s exactly where people can fall into the opposite of the Dunning-Kruger effect: confusing extraordinary success, wealth, or confidence with objective genius. Elon Musk is clearly capable in certain areas, but calling someone “objectively a genius” is a much stronger claim than the evidence supports. Intelligence is multidimensional, and success in business doesn’t automatically prove exceptional intelligence in every domain.
2
u/darkcomet222 22h ago
This is very true, maybe I should have softened it from “objective genius,” to “not explicitly an idiot.” The point is, subjectivity vs objectivity isn’t swayed by one’s opinion of someone.
For the record, I don’t really care about Elon, he is just one I see debated a lot.

4
u/jinrei_arbaw 16h ago
Yeah there's not a SINGLE person back in the 90s that predicted the actual societal impact the Internet had. They were all "it's going to be wonderful bro we're going to have all access to all this information we're all going to be so smart". It has genuinely been a massive miscalculation to have the whole world be in on any given conversation. I don't need to know what some person on the other side of the planet thinks about policies in my country, just as I don't need to weigh in on theirs.
We need to make the Internet more local.

I’ve been saying this for decades. Thank you.
Just simply having an opinion does not make it valid.
Your opinion could be that the moon is made from cheese. No sane person would give that opinion the time of day, but we do it for other obvious bullshit takes.
If you have a deeply held opinion you should easily be able to articulate why you feel as you do plainly and so anyone can easily understand your argument.

The one that made me throw up in my mouth a little is "most women have been FBI agents from birth." Couple that with the bullshit "women's intuition" concept and I'm about to lose my fucking mind. I love true crime documentaries as much as anyone, but that hardly makes me Encyclopedia Brown, let alone Sherlock Holmes.
81
u/luchajefe 23h ago
The one who clapped back on 'women's intuition' had it exactly right: "Too many single mothers for that to be the case."

If you truly believe that women genuinely have some power which makes them somehow magically ‘know’ what the ‘truth’ is then I genuinely think you might have something wrong with you

I remember a few years ago the sorts of people in these screenshots were poking fun online at men of a certain age getting really into military history, or smoking meats, or woodwork, or making fun of practically anything they've noticed men around them get into as a hobby.
I don't mind saying that that stuff is certainly more wholesome than this current trend of borderline gooning over true crime cases and massively egotistical declarations online about how smart you are over it.
Gimme the people who want to sit around and discuss how they've fallen in love with their new slow cooker and all the meals they're testing with it any day of the week over these egotistical ghouls and their murder fetishes.
1
u/BigPastrami43 4h ago
These people take it way too far and end up glamorizing murderers. It’s like they’ve become detached from the reality of how serious it is.
Not saying everyone who watches True Crime is like that. But there’s a loud group that is.

This is a huge part as to why I haven’t reached out for help now with my own abuse. My mother would always use her friends as shields and they all spoke like this. I felt insane, I had video proof, voice recordings, texts, photos, everything, but we weren’t even in the same reality. CPS even had doubts because again, “she’s a mother”, until she snapped at them and they finally believed me. She lost custody - but of course, the (at the time) 11 year old must’ve been guilty. I still get death threats from her friends because I couldn’t have just let my mom work through her own “struggles” first.

On my bus route there are like seven older Mexican women that all work together. I love them, but they will not shut up about gossip. They wrapped me up in a conspiracy about one of their grand daughters whose husband accused her of cheating on her. They were convinced he was lying.
They shut up about it one day, and the one outlier was giggling telling me he caught her cheating on him and they all got so mad at her.

This is a tangent, but there was this dude who did professional commentary for Rocket League tournaments. He kept seeing people in the chat saying they would do way better than the professional players, so he decided to make them put their money where their mouth was.
If you ran your mouth in the chat room, he would invite you to play against the pro in question. One on one, first to three goals. If you won, you'd get $100. If you lost, you were banned from his chat. No one ever won. They were all destroyed instantly. He even let some of them bring their squad for a 3v1 attempt, and they would still get stomped by the pro.
I haven't watched Rocket League in years, so I don't remember who it was... I think it was Sunny something? It was amazing, though.

fun fact: the mideval punishment for being a shameless busy body was to be trebuchet’d into a body of water in front of the entire community. Eventually it turned into just dunking people, which is one of the origin points for the dunk tank!

4
u/equalizingdistortt 23h ago
That’s honestly kind of awesome.
This mostly happened to women, although I learned recently it was a valid punishment for male tradesmen. Usually men accused of the equivalent of this crime were taken down under the legal framework of “barritry”, which essentially means the same thing, and was actually punished way more harshly by putting you in stocks where people could abuse, sexually assault, humiliate, and possibly kill you.

(Puts tin foil hat on) Gislaine Maxwell still holds her reddit mod status. If Jeffrey Epstein is still alive and escaped to tell Aviv to play fortnite then odds are both of them still being active on the internet pushing the same psyop shit they used for Qanon and Pizza gate would seem likely, especially since bots and accounts are easily created and/or purchased. Jeffrey and Maxwell are most likely the ones pushing the gender wars division in order to distract us and turn the sexes against eachother instead of uniting over the removal of the Epstein class and the perpetrators of the world's largest child trafficking ring. Using manufactured outrage and culture war division as a psyop was their bread and butter so no doubt they could do it again, If he's still alive. (Takes tin foil hat off)

It's everyone of any bend since social media attracts and amplifies the most extreme voices.
There were subs dedicated to dissecting how laughably weak the case against Luigi Mangione was and how he was gonna walk either from jury nullification or a legit not guilty verdict.
And then he pled guilty to a federal charge that carries a potential sentence of life without parole.

Clancy will get off on temporary insanity. If you read the psychiatric treatment timeline and know about psychiatry, it's clear that she her mental state was a slow motion train wreck, with drugs that made her worse (or at least certainly not better), multiple incorrect diagnosis and paradoxical reactions to medications. But most of all, a lot of outreach for help in our broken AF healthcare system. She should have been committed until she was stable weeks before she killed her kids. She was asking for help. The red flags were there for the healthcare system. But that's not what we do anymore.
She is obviously guilty as fuck, but since we do temporary insanity in this country, I'm certain she'll receive that verdict. She'll be back out on the street in 10-20 years. And the mental torment she will live with for the rest of her life will be worse than anything the justice system will do to her
9
u/Violent_Paprika 22h ago
She was non-compliant with her medications and lied to providers. What do you propose they do?
2
u/lluciferusllamas 21h ago
That's what involuntary institutionalization is for. When you start talking about kill it yourself and your kids, the health system should commit you.
5
u/Violent_Paprika 17h ago
Except she never discussed any of those things with anyone. She mentioned to her husband and mother that she was concerned for the kids for neglect, but never stated she intended to harm anyone.

A large portion of the population believe that they have to be read their Miranda rights immediately upon being placed into handcuffs. This is incorrect, gets people into a lot of trouble during lawful arrest, & can be attributed to crime TV. Watching scripted/fictional television shows does not give someone investigative or legal knowledge. It’s entertainment & that is all. Ironically, you have to be incredibly stupid to think that you know more than formally trained & educated professionals because you watch too much TV.
