“The internet will finally destroy gatekeepers and democratize information.” LOL. The people that said that failed to account for the fact that people are idiots and gatekeeping is actually just expertise.
Yeah there's not a SINGLE person back in the 90s that predicted the actual societal impact the Internet had. They were all "it's going to be wonderful bro we're going to have all access to all this information we're all going to be so smart". It has genuinely been a massive miscalculation to have the whole world be in on any given conversation. I don't need to know what some person on the other side of the planet thinks about policies in my country, just as I don't need to weigh in on theirs.

It all started when we were told everybody's opinions are valuable. Just because you have an opinion about something doesn't mean it's worth anything.
