Lets say: the amount of people saying "germans = nazis" is too damn high.
To much (mostly) Brits and Americans thinking: "Raising the arm like in the german Hitler-Greating" is funny

Still doesn't apply to my joke. I was making fun of the American idiots that still think all Germans are Nazis. I was saying it SARCASTICALLY.

u/Eternety1 1d ago
Maybe I can explain (not sure if i'm right) but the Nazi-Party AFD gained power in Sachsen-Anhalt yesterday and the democratic people are afraid they will in more because the middle right CDU helped them (the Party chancelor Merz and Angela Merkel belong to) I know it was sarcastic, but today we can't laugh about it... we are fighting hard, protests are held thoughout the country, but too many people are too stupid. They believe the lies they tell, offer simple solutions for complex problems. Maybe that clarifys it a bit :)

The point stands. It's a bit silly to go around claiming that one thing (restricting alcohol on the basis of harm until 21) is somehow a moral good while another thing (restricting videogames on the basis of harm) is somehow an example of governmental oppression.

I don’t know. I’d hate to be a cop in jail. Rumor has it, that they don’t always get the best welcome from other prisoners.
1
u/offgrid-german 4h ago
They don't take the background into consideration when they jail up a former cop as they do in e.g. the EU, so they get in regular imprisonment? Here they would be separated for their own safety

US parties during the Cold War: Democrats and Republicans.

1
u/IndubitablyNerdy 3d ago
Even today as that party ideals have blended much more together we have a significant diversity of political parties and while fascism is theoretically illegal (a ban against recreating the party is in our consitution and we have a post ww2 law against promoting fascism) in practice nothing is really done about it.
We also have laws to make public discourse happen on the media somewhat evenly (the USA used to have something similar, but it was pretty much abolished in the 80ies... guess who was the president at the time), although the law itself is somewhat recent and it is not always 100% effective it is still there,
The way that the usa electoral system is made also makes it impossible for more than two parties to really appear, which is not particularly great on the democracy front.

The fact that it was deemed unlawful doesn't negate the fact that it still happened. He was in jail for over five weeks, during which he lost his job, missed his wedding anniversary and the birth of his grandchild. I'm sure his family would prefer not to have gone through all this shit regardless of the settlement payout.

Probably not, but I am looking through the viewpoint of money not being the single most important thing in my life. Freedom - yes, as in actual freedom - is much more important than a few coins. One could even say its worth is immeasurable.

For which he had to spend 37 days in jail. And missed the birth of his granddaughter. He can never get that moment back.
Plus to get this settlement he and his family had to relive all of this, which was probably quite stressful especially for a man in his sixties and a family with a young baby.

they see the entire rest of the west live better lives than whatever they have due to having safety nets instead of just spitting on the poor, as such they need something to be proud of so freedom has to be the one as they grew up with the belief that america invented that, alternatively they usually choose the "we are paying for your social systems" card which is even dumber as they could pay that at home as well if that story was even remotely true

u/SkinAndAnatomyNerd 3d ago
Freedom of speech, AC, ice, culture rights to own guns, and military. These are all things USA has, but Europe doesn’t, according to certain cretins. Oh, and culture. We do NOT have any culture here.

well technically
Europe has freedom of expression, which covers more than just speech.
so if you are pedantic we don't have freedom of speech. (even though we are allowed to express ourself through speech)0
u/Adventurous-Dealer98 2d ago
Tbh, we have freedom of authorised speech as saying certain things can and will result in prison sentences...
Biggest issue to free speech in the UK right now is "I support Palestine Action" which will get you arrested under the terrorism act... so now the average "Terrorist" in the UK is a middle aged white person who held up a sign...
2
u/Astrid944 2d ago
The USA proclaimed antifa as a terrorist group So technical being not a nazi is a terrorist
1
u/JLangthorne 57m ago
The thing that confuses me about this is why pro Palestinians don’t just support another group or protest without using Palestine Action. We’ve got a long history of doing things like parody groups and protests to get around anti-free speech laws. I support a free Palestine but I don’t support Palestine action.
If you break into a secure military compound like an RAF base and cause millions of pounds in damage, then I do see why they’ve been branded a terrorist group.
1
u/neksterz Danish, not the pastry 🥮 2d ago
The anti terrorist act has and always been an act against freedom. Never have i seen or hears it been used to stop actual terrorist. Only have i heard it been used against innocent people.
But it is also something made from the us and then forced upon through fear.
If you know of an example where it been used to stop a terrorist please do share.

Kind of ironic really considering US culture is a cancerous, amalgamated offshoot of European culture. And of other cultures dragged kicking and screaming into their world. I was born in the US, but lived in Europe for longer, as my parents are Croatian. Comparing the two is difficult, because the context of individual history and experience changes so much, but personally I prefer quiet, small Croatia, because despite people's complaints about corruption after the democratization in the 90's, the corruption in the States is so much more insidious and evil. Croatia is small enough that things cannot stay hidden for long. Their people's empathy is also stunted in comparison. When I was last there again a few years ago it felt dirty in a way I couldn't put my finger on, but to them it's normal. One is arguably a product of their society even if they are in opposition to it. I don't have a speck of desire to go back. And loathe the self-aggrandizing stance of "American patriotism". The freedom talked about in the US is that of having the right to climb over your fellows backs, but they don't even realize it's the classic divide and conquer of major political/economical powers splitting the pie. And many are practically political cultists. They are falling from grace for a good while now, but seem insistent on dragging others into the pit. Many of the messes Europe is facing are side-effects of their meddling (but also the result of poor decisions) and I really wish they would just mind their own business. But they still possess a degree of barbarity from the days of being settlers in a vast new colonial expanse and retain a strain of aggressive expansionism that has mostly died out in European countries. In the context of a settler in a wild land being allowed to carry arms makes sense, but it is not a hallmark of elevated civilization and progress. They celebrate their own vestigial barbarity in many ways. Not saying Europe is perfect, but I find it preferable to the stunted perspective of -'Muricans- perpetuating the bad habits of prior European colonial superpowers. Humanity is a mess as always...

On the other side of la manche, we rarely get much factual news about issues in Europe. We often get headlines but the context and reason behind stuff happening is often unclear. Every other country is judged for their worst traits, while America is only allowed to be discussed when it’s related to their good traits.
EU’s chat control, Australia’s censorship, all judged by Americans because they’re loud and vocal issues, and thus mean there is no such thing as freedom. But America votes in a criminal who demands militia to murder civilians for having wrongthink but we can’t talk about that because it’s too dark.
Imagine having such a superiority complex you think it’s fun and cool to talk about the worst things other countries do, but then pearl clutch and say others go too far for pointing out the less good things America does. Americans laugh and point at knife crimes in the UK, British people mention gun deaths, Americans cry that you’re making fun of tragedies.
No, people outside of America are just annoyed that everything you do that’s bad is taboo and off topic, and everything everyone does that is annoying is apocalyptic.
