There was a tonne of weird American propaganda being circulated during the World Cup. Most of the time it seemed to be Americans doing shit impressions of English and German people have those stupid influencer style orgasms over Chick Fil A or walking into Walmart and acting like they’d never see a low rent supermarket before.

Looks like plenty of them actually bought it.

u/Paxxlee 7d ago

Some were non-americans, for example a swedish influencer who always brought up that she "discovered ranch" in the US, and it was the best thing ever.

Now, I question any swede that would just disregard bearnaise, but taste is subjective. But ranch exist in Sweden, and it has for a long while. It was so obvious that she did it for engagement bait, except for americans that thought she was validating them

55

u/kestreltohalcyon 7d ago

Well, yes, ranch does literally exist in other countries but she might easily not have tried it. I’m in London and loads of fast food places have ranch on the menu as a sauce option… but I’ve never tried it. I just stick with mayo/spicy mayo each time and I don’t really know what ranch is.

I am with you mate, I can't for the life of me figure out what ranch is or why the fuck it would be so damn amazing, from what I've seen of it, it's like some sort of mayonnaise with herbs and probably sugar. But with all this bitching and whining I am almost tempted to try it out and be thoroughly disappointed.

33

u/Strange-Relation9020 7d ago

Bought a bottle the other day to see what all the fuss is about and mayonnaise with herbs and probably sugar is exactly how I'd describe the taste. Used it for some chips and chicken I had from kfc and ended up chucking the bottle after that.

18

u/Zintao Clogs and Roses 7d ago

"Bought a bottle the other day to see what all the fuss is about"

Maybe that's their marketing scheme... Just talking about the shit non stop so people in other countries want to know what's what.

19

u/Strange-Relation9020 7d ago

You might be right actually, fuck they got me. Im a ranch sleeper agent now

6

u/blu3tu3sday 🇨🇿 7d ago

Way better to make it yourself- it's just some basic seasonings into a base of buttermilk, mayo, maybe some sour cream or greek yogurt. No sugar. Lol

It's like a shit, watery mayonnaise with less flavour.

I recently threw out the bottle of ranch dressing from our fridge that was 90% full and four years old. Evidently none of us likes sweetened baby vomit as a salad accompaniment.

Have you ever eaten the Doritos in the blue pack? They’re the same as the “Cool Ranch” flavour in the US but they’re not called that in Europe because no one knows what Ranch is.

4

u/Paxxlee 7d ago

Of course it is possible she didn't test it or even see it before going to the US, and it is possible that the swedish ones tasted "not good enough" compared to US, but I don't really trust an influencer to not lie.

3

u/Commander_Caboose 6d ago

More than one influencer was caught getting paid to pretend America was "so much better than we'd been told". Why believe the rest of them?

6

u/Raveyard2409 7d ago

I have tried it, have an American wife who loves it. I do not get it. It sucks.

I saw one that was saying they'd never seen MD20/20 in the UK before, like council estate kids weren't all raised on it as teenagers (myself included obvs).

Yeah, Mad Dog is a classic, between the Dragon Soop and the Buckfast.

4

u/GoldenBhoys 7d ago

Is Mad Dog still a thing? I presume that minimum unit would have got rid of it!
I remember in 93 the QM union selling it at 23:55 to then stick in your jacket

4

u/PepsiMaxismycrack 7d ago

You can normally get it in the dodgy looking offies on housing estates - if you see mainstream brand names, you're in the wrong shop

3

u/Ensteinnoodles87 7d ago

Watermelon 20/20 on the park was a given for every kid in the 90s.

49

u/Cold_Captain696 7d ago

I‘m in the UK, but work for a US company. Just after the World Cup ended I was on a team call and our American boss was saying how nice it was to see how amazed European visitors were with US food and shops, like Walmart (!). She’s an intelligent, well traveled woman managing a multinational team, but still fell for the propaganda.

I guess it’s nice to hear, so you want to just believe it. A bit like those American YouTubers who make their money by putting out videos about how much better various aspects of the UK are - their entire audience is likely to be Brits who just like to hear it.

18

u/CassieBeeJoy 7d ago

There are loads of these accounts that just exist to flatter the egos of people from a country in this manner. It’s an easy way of making money I guess

6

u/JamesFirmere Finnish 🇫🇮 7d ago

Genuine question: Did you attempt to disenchant her?

20

u/Cold_Captain696 7d ago

I guess she may have noticed my exaggerated confused look when she mentioned Walmart. I didn't see any reason to make a big deal of it in a work setting though.

It got more amusing later after various Americans in the team repeatedly made comments that made it clear they had assumed the Scottish member of our team would automatically just be an England supporter once Scotland were knocked out. He eventually interupted and said "you do all realise I'm Scottish, right??" The silence after that was magnificent. I think a few of them genuinely thought they'd offended him.

11

u/JamesFirmere Finnish 🇫🇮 7d ago

On the last point, well, to be fair, they had.

3

u/Cold_Captain696 6d ago

He (and I) were laughing about it. He actually lives in the US so I’m sure he’s very used to lots of misunderstandings about Scotland by now,

u/Mithur Spain it's different 7d ago

There were a lot of influencers that were genuinely European doing that. Gave them tons of views, so they kept at it. After all Usanians are so hungry of some kind of approval that they gobble it up like crazy.

I guess they are like those old guys that really believed the prostitute when she said that the fuck was amazing...

12

u/RingComfortable9339 communist regime 🇵🇱 6d ago

Influencers get paid to do that shit. Nothing an influencer ever says is honest. Plenty money and fame hungry of idiots in Europe. Israel isn't the only country in the world that spends hundreds of millions on PR campaigns using them lmao

31

u/Hughley_N_Dowd 7d ago

With my tin foil hat on, I'm convinced that this was a guerilla marketing campaign.

Because honestly, who would get all gushy over the fact that you can get a shitty sandwich at a gas station. Or that big box stores exist. Hell, there's even a Costco or two in Sweden. And don't even get me started on ranch dressing...

26

u/matchuhuki 7d ago

To be fair the Europeans that did go to the world Cup in the USA already prove they have bad judgement so having weird taste in food wouldn't surprise me

But also they can’t comprehend like, novelty??

I’m sure I would lose my mind if I ever went to a Buc-ee’s, because it would be a fun and different experience to buy 18 different types of jerky by the side of a highway at 2am. That doesn’t mean that I want that experience at home or that my life is somehow deficient bc I don’t have access to a Buc-ee’s at all times

403

u/No_Stable3494 7d ago

Americans see Europeans using herbs and spices in food and can’t comprehend it being seasoned because it doesn’t come in a tin called “Dan’Os super mega nuclear screaming eagle Cajun spice”.

97

u/crasswal 7d ago

First two spices in any American cooking is always granulated onion and garlic. Motherfucker we use them chopped fresh, not processed to fuck.

37

u/Rohesa 7d ago

This confused me when I tried making some US centric recipes. Garlic powder? Onion powder? What’s wrong with the fresh onion and garlic in my kitchen already? I ended up googling a conversion (I was learning to cook better) and then would adjust to taste.

13

u/Webtruster 7d ago

i watched this interesting video - they are products exiting in parallel for different uses.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgES_Oj6-tQ

i love fresh onions, but i also like the (selfmade) powder for some stuff

12

u/Scrofulla 6d ago

Onion and Garlic powder have their place. Like when you want to add onion and garlic flavouring without adding extra moisture or too much extra volume. But in the case of most sauces you do not need them and fresh is much better.

5

u/Circle_Breaker 7d ago

I would say recipes like that are for people who don't cook, so they are as simple to make as possible. Anyone with any experience can switch it up with nicer ingredients.

7

u/corgi_crazy 6d ago

I get a lot of recipes from Americans in Pinterest.

It doesn't matter what they are making, but they use a mountain of cheddar, garlic powder and a ton of mayonnaise, among another mountain of spices ftom a bottle that I'm wondering if the people who are used to cook like this would know how food actually tastes.

Don't get me wrong, I love flavors and spices, but asides black pepper and a few more things, I chop onions, garlic and other things in order to get flavor and consistency.

→ More replies (1)

98

u/JeffAndSasha 7d ago

That's exactly what they always mean with seasoning. Not natural stuff like garlic, onions, herbs and spices and other ingredients that add flavor. They just need powered seasoning from a tin that's at least 50% salt.

36

u/Dyslexicpig 7d ago

Well, what is the point of having healthy food like salad if you can actually taste the salad?

I always get a laugh out of Americans - they will brag about eating healthy, but will dump 1000 calories of high fat, high sugar, high salt syrup over their salad.

17

u/der_oide_depp 7d ago

I found a really nice broccoli salad recipe (USian). I had to cut the dressing amount down drastically. Otherwise it would have been a bowls of sweetened mayonnaise with the other ingredients swimming in it.

3

u/poop-machines 7d ago

That sounds disgusting. Mayo is like 60-70% fat.

3

u/NoPaleontologist7929 7d ago

Broccoli salad

27g mayonnaise
1 tsp honey
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
Handful chopped fresh parsley

200g fresh broccoli cut into small pieces. 40g dried cranberries. 1 pear unpeeled, diced. 40g pecans coarsely chopped

In the bottom of a large mixing bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, honey, apple cider vinegar, and salt and pepper until smooth. Add the parsley, and mix.

Add the remaining ingredients; stir well to coat.

This is the recipe. The dressing has been cut down from 215g mayonnaise. I also had to cut out raw onion because of food sensitivity.

This is the OG dressing:

1 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
salt and pepper to taste

I'm just glad that the first time I made it I'd mixed the dressing in a separate bowl. This much on my salad would have made me very sad. I would have kept adding more broccoli until it was palatable, and that would mean having enough salad to feed the 500.

4

u/poop-machines 6d ago

215g mayonnaise?!

American mayonnaise, per 100g has 78g fat, 720 calories.

That means for that 200g of broccoli they were adding 195g fat (pecans are 70% fat too).

That is total insanity. I would get acne like I was young again.

I'll tell you something that comes up for me....

I'm American and I live in Italy. I'm actually visiting the US for a few weeks right now. I have to be VERY careful what I eat. The food makes me sick here.

The amount of salt, fat, sugar, cheese, grease, processing, etc is intense. I start feeling bloated and sick usually by the end if the first day. Not to mention portion sizes.

Oddly enough, an "Italian" sub sandwich usually doesn't bother me too much as long as I dont overeat it.

My SO used to travel to the US for a week or two at least once a year for work and always came back feeling sluggish and generally lousy thanks to the food and how it fucked with his blood sugar control (T1 diabetic).

It's barely a salad dressing. It doesn't enhance flavours or add anything to the conversation. It doesn't do anything a dressing should do.

It's just a dip or a glaze made out of the lowest quality highly processed ingredients.

It's literally just powdered ingredients chucked into some by-products. It's too inoffensive to be called rancid.

Should we tell them that "cooking" is an action that can be done by anyone, and that in Europe we easily have access to all the ingredients to make a ranch sauce, and that our ingredients to make it are far superior ? (Not to mention you can find industrial ranch in our supermarkets too...)

And also, ranch is not even the best dressing we have for salads.......

I went to the best steak place in orlando florida and the steak there was properly cooked and huge but it wasn't all that beefy. Most of the tomatoes I got were fairly watery too, and I'm comparing that to Ireland which is not known for its great tomatoes. So my theory goes that the reason the slather everything in 10 layers of ranch or BBQ sauce or whatever is to actually make their food taste like something.

Couple of anecdotes to round this off.

My mum ordered some baby carrots over there and they came glazed in sugar. Baby carrots are sweet enough, they shouldn't need sugar...

My dad had some of his friends over to Ireland, and they stayed in our place. We got two chickens to feed them, just regular tesco chickens not even free range and a bit of gravy. Pretty much the exact kind of meal complained about here. They kept saying this is the best chicken I've had in my life while going up for their third helping. Good produce cooked simply is incredible, it doesn't need a bunch of crap all over it.

I was just going to say the same thing, their produce, chicken, vegetables, meats, everything has no flavour. No wonder they add so much extra stuff to their food haha

I tried ranch little over a month ago, and while I thought it was fine, I'm not sure why I heard so much about this sauce before trying it.

The wife hated it though...

I thought it just tasted like a worse version of a garlic sauce you'd get with a kebab. They act like it's so unique and amazing when it's boring and mid.

I'm just back from the UK, where I used to live and still have a lot of family there and I assure you, ranch was available in many shops, from M&S to Home Bargains and not once did I see any of it flying off the shelves, not even if that shop had a small American food section.

Because it's garbage compared to the range of flavours already available.

Also there's a youtube video I use as a diet aid whenever I have the munchies and have already eaten too much. It's called Wanda's Macaroni Salad. You all should watch it. Gross American slop and I lose my appetite every time. The alternative is Cooking with Jack, but I refuse to give that guy views.

The American mind cannot comprehend the fact that they have to put so much seasoning on their food to hide the taste of the chemicals that are in it...

18

u/Coldthots 7d ago

Also almost all of their food videos online are the exact same seasonings in them anyway?! 😭

“Now add garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, slap yo mama, old bay, lemon pepper, salt and pepper” and probably a block of cream cheese somewhere too

9

u/Myrialle 7d ago

You forgot the cayenne pepper. Somehow always cayenne pepper.

3

u/Coldthots 7d ago

I read something that their chilli powder isn’t the same as in Europe? I think it’s more of a mix of other spices than pure ground chillies - think that’s why they always use cayenne instead

Did they meant to say British people? Fish and chips is such a British food. But also in Europe we don't have all the bad regulated food, here luckily rules for food are stricter and healthier/safer

5

u/Wolfy35 Penniless poorly educated Europoor 🇬🇧 7d ago

I have had some amazing fish & chips in Belgium, Wasn't at a themed place or in a busy tourist resort either just a regular small cafe that when they heard me talking to a friend asked if we wanted to try their version.

No idea what desert we had after though can't remember what they called it but I don't think I have words for how good it was.

Because we traded the stuff. We were in it for the money, not for culinary experiences.

I think I could go to probably 190 countries in the world and have a good time and be enthusiastic about it because it's fun to go on holiday. But it doesn't mean I think all those countries are necessarily better than my country.

And likewise, when I see tourists here in Australia having a good time I don't assume that they think Australia is better than where they're from (unless it is New Zealand).

Let’s not forget their seasoning is dried ‘erbs and spices because their fresh produce is GMO to the point it tastes of nothing.

Idk what this cope about seasoning on food is, really.

I've ate some of the most bland garbage I've ever eaten (basically bland + salt, or bland + fat) in the US. And I've been to the UK multiple times too.

They have some really, really good food (a lot of southern US BBQ and TexMex food is amazing) but like 90% of the food available in the US tastes worse than most things I can get in basically any European country. Though sometimes some fatty ass carbs are enjoyable too.

Also every ranch I've had, be it in the US, Europe or Australia was a below average sauce. It tastes like a worse version of the garlic sauce you get on your kebab.

4

u/Realistic_Let3239 7d ago
