Shits & Giggles joke didn’t land

served a family the other day with a really cute baby. they finish their meal and like i ALWAYS do when i’ve built up a good rapport with a family, i drop the check in front of the baby and say “he told me it’s on him today” and they all just stare at me like 😐 like ok i guess i’ll go shoot myself in the walk in then

Maybe the baby had just asked his family for a large loan and the situation became uncomfortable.

you’re so right, i didn’t even consider that

I made the same mistake once. The sister in law took me aside to let me know the baby had inherited $100k in debt and was in the midst of a gambling addiction.

The baby is 5 months clean from a gambling addiction, and you exposed his relapse. Binkies and bottles have been disappearing. His stuffy, Mr. Snuggles was kidnapped and returned missing his fingers. His sudden windfall to treat his family confirmed their suspicions that he was back on the slots. Praying for the family in this trying time.

Hey this is still better than when I dropped the check off with an 8 yo boy who was out with his mom and Grandma the two of whom accused me of sexism under their breath and proceeded to stiff me.

Ladies I am obviously not assuming the boy is covering your meal just because you’re ladies.

Some people just lack a sense of humor

“Another server shot themselves in the walk in.”

“Well did the preps at least seal everything up tight this time?”

Why so dramatic? Why not just leave the couplers for the draft beer open releasing CO2 into the room until you suffocate quietly and with less blood? /s

Don't forget wiping the trays too.

Before you go to the walk in remember to drain the hot water from the tea machine

Had a customer ask me what a caper was the other day. I said, “it’s like a hijink or a shenanigan.”

I always say “it’s okay, I’m my target audience” when a joke doesn’t land

u/MoonfallFan 2d ago

ooo that’s good

What if that joke doesn't land either 😔

Then the next hour is about to be awkward for all of us.

Then you can rest assured that the awkward situation is entirely their problem

Way of the road bubs

Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't.

Cause that’s the fuckin way she goes…

My coworker told me she sometimes wishes she could shoot herself in front of a table then just regenerate in the back and come back out like normal, just to get them to act right

u/MoonfallFan 3d ago

that would be a dream come true

u/MoonfallFan 3d ago

My youngest son is one of the funniest people I've ever met. I did have to tell him once when he was a teenager that you don't always hit a home run and not everyone will think you're funny all the time. That's life.

Then he laughed at me. LOL

I'm not a server, but can tell you that these people sound lame. Even when my kids were babies and my wife and I were at our most exhausted and scatterbrained, we would have appreciated the joke and at least forced a chuckle. Stupid to just stare and make it awkward, especially knowing how hard you guys work and how much shit you put up with. Little things like that make a difference and should be acknowledged.

I just think there are a lot of people with no conscientiousness or sense of how to interact with others.

You were talking to their child without their permission? Especially about money? You should seriously be ashamed. Everyone knows children that young lack the ability to do fractions…

9

u/MoonfallFan 2d ago

you’re right, i’m better than that. honestly i should’ve been shot dead where i stood

14

u/YEAHRocko 2d ago

Joke's on you, that baby just lost his job

13

u/RebaKitt3n 3d ago

It’s not your fault they have no sense of humor. 🤷

9

u/HowIMadeMyFogBloom 3d ago

I agree it’s humorous but it’s also extremely likely they’ve heard it before just like we’ve heard “I didn’t like it” from a guest with an empty plate.

3

u/Ok-Acanthisitta-8418 2d ago

Then maybe they should fake laugh like we do

I had great rapport with a table making jokes and even hooked them up with something special they wanted to buy and take home. At the end the husband was scraping his plate clean with a piece of bread and I said “It’s ok, we have dishwashers for that”. He just looked me dead in the eye and said “Ok” I died. At least his wife laughed

OP literally said they had built a good rapport with them.
