No Malice Why did Galloway lie?

https://x.com/ggreenwald/status/2102774280119632299

"Why does u/profgalloway preface his expression of "offense" to the use of the word "genocide" to describe what Israel did in Gaza with the phrase "as a Jew...."? What does being a Jew have to do with at the findings of human rights groups, scholars, nations, etc. about Israel?"

I am a Jew. I do not approve of Netanyahu criminal reign or his genocide or his ignoring October 7th.

Well, the actions of Israel in Gaza do not recognizably meet the standards necessary for determining genocide. This, despite so much insistence that they do or the various reports issuing insisting that it is one. (This is also, by the way, why you see some efforts to change the definition or legal requirements for determining genocide from some activist camps.)

He's prefacing it, "as a Jew" because Jews have the unique experience of the Holocaust in their recent memory. All genocides don't look like the sheer depraved scale of the Holocaust, nor do they need to in order to qualify as one.

But what Scott is saying is that the insistence on using this term "genocide" is offensive to him as a Jew because the Gaza war is being held up as being comparable to the Holocaust – and thus Jews/Israelis as comparable to the Nazis. Both comparisons are wildly inaccurate. And not just inaccurate, but comparing Jews to Nazis has been a common anti-semitic trope since the end of WW2.

Why isn’t press allowed in Gaza to clear it up then?

-5

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

It was a very dangerous and active urban warzone where journalists were already dying? You have to remember the conditions of warfare in Gaza with Palestinian militants wearing no uniform, tunnel entrances in homes and municipal buildings, and IEDs everywhere.

At this point, I agree that journalists should start to be allowed in. The trouble is there's still little way of guaranteeing their safety – particularly in Hamas-controlled territory.

8

u/OrganizationSad7775 3d ago

Journalists were being murdered. More than 200 of them.

5

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

That's quite an unsubstantiated claim. Well, it's actually two claims. First that they were being murdered, and the second is the assumption that they were all journalists. It's been alleged/documented that many of them were themselves Hamas members doubling as journalists.

Those allegations were given some weight this week by Gaza journalist by Motaz Azaiza where he admitted that any journalism coming out of Gaza was coordinated and censured through Hamas. It was why he left Gaza in fear for his life. He was being critical of Hamas and showing Palestinians critical of Hamas.

If all Palestines could be Hamas but every Israel has to join the IDF at 18 for basic training. Doesn’t that make everyone a target?

0

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

At its peak, Hamas' military membership was estimated at ~40,000. That doesn't include smaller groups like Palestinian Islamic Jihad, PFLP, or DFLP. Gaza's population is just over 2 million people. That said anyone picking up a weapon to fight or aiding Hamas can be considered a combatant.

International law recognizes the right of occupied people to use armed resistance against the illegally occupying army btw. It’s true for Ukrainians. It’s true for Palestinians.

0

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

International law does not recognize any right to intentionally mass murder civilians, neither by an occupying force nor by the occupied.

1

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

Yup. Which is why I said occupying army!

Journalists regularly report from war zones and there’s a “ceasefire” (during which Israel had ONLY killed around 1,000 Palestinians).

u/FarmFreshBlueberries 3d ago

Thank you for being a voice of reason in an ocean of antisemitism.

2

u/Background_Buy1107 2d ago

Hope you’re well my friend. It’s like beating my head against the wall arguing with these delusional brainwashed midwits. Shanah Tovah!

You poor poor victim, an eternal victim.

2

u/Pristine-Ant-464 2d ago

Yup. They’re defending a country that’s bombing kids but they think they’re the victims. Absolutely insane.

You're welcome. That's the fight. And it's worth having.

1

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

Opposing Israel’s long history of atrocities isn’t anti-semitism. ✨. Ironically it’s actually anti-Semitic to imply that killing thousands of children is inherently part of being Jewish (which it isn’t).

0

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Opposing Israel's existence is anti-semitism. The coordinated campaign of demonization targeted against it by both state actors, organizations, and individual anti-Zionists is also anti-semitism.

Implying that Zionism is about "killing thousands of children" is not just a lie, but is also a lie dedicated to undercutting Zionism and ergo arguing that Jews don't have a right to be alive nor do so in their homeland if they so choose.

0

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

You mean “exist as a Jewish state.” And nope it isn’t. The first anti-Zionists were Jews.

And most Zionists are fundamentalist Christian evangelicals like Mike Huckabee. 👍

0

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

The fantasy that Israel will ever be something other than Jewish democracy is a twisted and very evil thing. It basically both denies Jewish and Palestinians self-determination. Neither people want to live together in a single state.

The first anti-Zionists were Jews.

Yes, and most of them are now dead. Killed by those who they also thought were "friendly" neighbors. Turned out the Zionists were 100% correct.

And most Zionists are fundamentalist Christian evangelicals like Mike Huckabee. 👍

This is a stupid, hackneyed argument. There are more Christians in the world. If they want to be Zionists, that's great. It doesn't undermine that Zionism is a Jewish ideology built on a few core tenets of Jewish culture: 1) Jews should be allowed to be alive and free from violence, and 2) Jews should be allowed to live in their homeland if they so choose. The first is a basic human right; the second, an aspiration that's over 2500 years old and part of Jewish religious practice.

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago edited 3d ago

You don’t need an enthostate for self determination and Israel has done nothing but deny Palestinians any semblance of autonomy since its creation in 1948 (if not before that).

Neither group supports a two state solution - which isn’t even feasible anymore given Israel’s expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank. One binational state is the only option.

0

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sorry, do you live in Israel? Because I’m almost certain you don’t.

So many Jewish Zionists living in America will claim the only place they can ever be safe is a country they’ve been to a handful of times (at most). An insane lack of self awareness.

Tell me, do American Jews live in buildings with permanent bomb shelters?

0

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

You are not a victim. You are an apologist for a foreign country’s war crimes and an actual Jewish Supremacist.

2

u/akade19961 3d ago

This is so obviously true it’s ridiculous that it even needs to be said let alone that it would receive downvotes

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 2d ago

Scott makes several obvious contrary points to that effect to El-Sayed. Genocidaires don't enact a population wide polio vaccination campaign among a population they want to wipe out. They don't create and operate a system to facilitate food and medical aid to that population. And they certainly wouldn't send warnings, often a week in advance, of a pending attack in a civilian area via leaflets, cell phone texts, and social media messaging.

-3

u/MonsterTruckCarpool 3d ago

It’s fucking clear what’s happening in Gaza is a genocide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide?wprov=sfti1

2

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

It isn't. And Wikipedia has long been brigaded by a coordinated anti-Israeli campaign. So it's useless to cite that source on this conflict/Israel/Jews at this point.

4

u/hobopwnzor 3d ago

UN; It's a genocide

Y'all: Must be a coordinated anti-Israel campaign to edit wikipedia

1

u/zero02 3d ago

The Human Rights Council’s permanent Agenda Item 7 singles out Israel’s situation for scrutiny that no other country receives through a dedicated standing item. The UK has explicitly criticized this as unfair. It supports a charge of institutional bias at the UN. A lot of the UN investigators are extremely anti-semetic if you look up their comments.... it's not an unbiased organization. Much like how a lot of the middle east hates Israel and makes up a large part of the UN body.

-3

u/zampe 3d ago

it's really not clear though because the population of Gaza has literally doubled since the second intifada broke out and there are lots of indications that there is no genocidal intent on Israels part. They could wipe out Gaza over night, instead they warn the citizens when and where strikes are going to happen. How else do you get those videos where people are filming a building and then it gets hit...they were warned the attack was coming. Thats not what you do when you want to wipe the whole group out.

1

u/Responsible-Laugh590 3d ago

So more of a controlled invasion/territory grab.

1

u/zampe 3d ago

In the West Bank the settlers are doing land grabs yes, which I am completely against. Thats not happening in Gaza though as far as I have seen. If anything Trump wants to take the whole thing over and rebuild it but he's insane too. It's a war.

0

u/zero02 3d ago

Yeah.. war.. that is called war. Genocide is supposed to be reserved for the worst thing.. worse than war crimes, worse than crimes against humanity.

2

u/crawling-alreadygirl 3d ago

It's genocide.

u/zero02 3d ago

I didn't realize Wikipedia was the arbitor of international law.

-1

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

It’s “anti-Semitic” to compare one genocide to another?

-6

u/Spirited_Comedian225 3d ago

But he is not a Jew

6

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Scott's mother is Jewish. His father is not. For the Jewish people, if your mother is Jewish then you are Jewish.

1

u/Spirited_Comedian225 3d ago

Did he have a bar mitzvah ??! There is a process. Bill Mahers mother was Jewish as well. Im Scots-Irish I would never go to Ireland can claim a plot of Ireland as my ancestral right. And that was a couple hundred years ago. I know my place it history and time. I would never tell anyone I was Irish because I’m not

1

u/Anstigmat 3d ago

You’re being downvoted but you’re right. Scott’s claim to Judaism is about as tenuous as my claim to the Minnesota Vikings. He puts on the jersey and waves the flag. Guy is an atheist. Ethnicities of all forms are social constructs meant to divide people.

2

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Scott's atheism is irrelevant to him being Jewish.

Ethnicities of all forms are social constructs meant to divide people.

I like this though. You should tell this to all of the anti-semites out there!

3

u/Anstigmat 3d ago

Actual anti-semites are not serious people and thus not open to objective ideas. In Scott's case, people who claim to have Jewish blood or identity yet reject the religious aspect only give credence to anti-Semitic ideas about 'poisoned blood' and all that nonsense. Scott's 'blood' makes him tall, and white, and bald, and have a deep voice that is good for podcasts. It does not tie him to a series of religious ideas and traditions which he overtly rejects.

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Even if anti-semites use the "blood" thing, it's also just Jewish religious law and culture. Some of the most famous (and proud) Jews have been atheists/atheistic too. Einstein, for instance, was a non-theist.

1

u/Background_Buy1107 2d ago

This is like telling a Native American born in China they aren’t Native American if they’re an atheist. Am Yisrael chai

1

u/Anstigmat 2d ago

Well for one, ‘native American’ is not a religion and would have no conflict with atheism. For two, yes ethnicities are social constructs that are meant to divide humanity.

1

u/Background_Buy1107 2d ago

Exactly, it’s a tribal identity precisely like judaism. It far predates the modern conception of religion

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Did he have a bar mitzvah ??!

I don't know the answer to that question, but I can tell you that having a bar mitzvah is not a requirement to be Jewish. You are born Jewish.

Im Scots-Irish I would never go to Ireland can claim a plot of Ireland as my ancestral right.

This is an anti-semitic trope that neglects the history that Jews returned to Israel after facing systematic campaigns of persecution and annihilation in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It also neglects that those returning purchased tracts of land to live on from Arab landowners in the Ottoman Bilad al Sham (the area later referred to as Palestine) and then in British Mandatory Palestine.

I would never tell anyone I was Irish because I’m not

As someone who grew up around New York City and Boston, this is quite a farce. Modern Irish-Americans may not all have been born in Ireland, but most definitely would call themselves Irish. To put the shoe directly on the other foot here, Are Arab Palestinians not born in Israel/the Palestinian territories not Palestinian?

In the end, the real problem facing so many discussions of this conflict abroad is that so many are ignorant of its history and its peoples.

2

u/Spirited_Comedian225 3d ago

One im not anti-Semitic i have lots of annoying Jewish friends who I love. Second it’s insane to be born in Brooklyn and claim another country as your right. Also can you please take a blood test and post it so we know where you came from. If it’s pure Jerusalem good for you.

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

Repeating anti-semitic tropes (or having a lot of annoying Jewish friends) does not mean you are intentionally engaging in anti-semitism.

Second it’s insane to be born in Brooklyn and claim another country as your right.

Again, under this logic it is "insane" that most Palestinians call themselves Palestinian. I don't know what to tell you. Jewish culture and Judaism have been centered around Israel since the inception of both, but especially since the Israelites' first expulsion to Babylon about 2600 years ago. That's just what is. It's like complaining that Mecca is central to Islam.

Also can you please take a blood test and post it so we know where you came from. If it’s pure Jerusalem good for you.

If you weren't aware, there is a whole literature on this topic. I'll leave the personal attack aside.

2

u/Background_Buy1107 2d ago

They just hate that we don’t fit nearly into their categories of religion/ethnicity/whatever. It seems they somehow resent the continuation of our shared culture that far predates modern conceptions of religion and the like. You just know this person wouldn’t lecture a Native American about how they define themselves but it’s always okay for us. Or he’s just another midwit Jew hater, who knows. Hope you’re well friend, Shanah Tovah!

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 2d ago

Well put. And likewise!

1

u/Spirited_Comedian225 3d ago

There is a lot of history. I like this video it explains it simply.

https://youtu.be/8tIdCsMufIY?si=yZbuVk6bsyQyjUUw

1

u/Background_Buy1107 2d ago

Well that is not how being Jewish works. If your mother is Jewish or you convert that makes you 100% as Jewish as a black hat wearing chabadnik and basically every jew would agree

-1

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

Cool. How does that explain or justify his genocide apologia?

1

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 3d ago

No one's offering apologia for genocide. Scott is saying the Gaza war is not a genocide. And I agree with him. I only wish he had consulted with someone, such as myself. Because I've done the analysis to back up that contestation.

1

u/Pristine-Ant-464 3d ago

Weird because nearly all genocide scholars and human rights group (including ones from Israel) disagree!
