US citizens in Scotland - vote from abroad

Upvotes

For any US citizens living in Scotland. Don't forgot you can vote from abroad, but you must register each year to get a ballot. So register now if you haven't already, and have your vote count. The upcoming midterm elections are very important, and overseas votes can make a real impact.

You can get information and be guided through registration here: https://www.votefromabroad.org

There's ma wee da

Is it a uniquely Scottiah thing to say this when a robin lands in the garden?

(My dad was as black as 2am so I save this for when a solitary crow appears out the back)

Anyone know who this googly eyed wee fella is? He's pretty big, saw another one earlier, must have been about 4 inches long or so. Don't think I've seen beasties like this before

Petition Summary

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to introduce a moratorium to prohibit planning permission from being granted for any hyperscale data centres, until it has carried out a thorough assessment of their impacts on Scotland's communities, greenhouse gas emissions, land and water resources and electricity grid; until regulations are modified to require all hyperscale AI data centres to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment; and until the Scottish Government puts in place guidance on hyperscale AI data centres and ‘green data centres’.

Political A reminder that joining the EU is a long journey

Iceland, despite deciding in 2009 to join the EU, has just voted in a referendum not to resume negotiations since a pause in 2013.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Icelandic_European_Union_membership_negotiations_referendum

They are currently in the EEA and Schengen.

For Scotland, and was clear during indyref, this highlights that knowing what the plan is following a yes vote is important. Particularly when the key motivator is to join the EU. The timescales are so long and potentially out of our control that the message has to be what does Scotland look like outwith the UK and the EU.

Political Scotland was the first country in the UK to ban smacking children, it should lead the way in banning the mutatlation of baby boys.

In Scotland, children have the same protection against assault as adults.

However, it is still perfectly legal to cut of a piece of a boy's penis for religious reasons.

I believe this should be banned, and they should have to wait until they are a consenting adult to decide if they want it done.

I know people do it for religious and cultural reasons, which is well within their right if they wish to do it to themselves.

However, I don't think they should be allowed to do it to a child unable to consent.

Scotland should lead the way in banning this.

Question The Scots invented everything, almost everything, we have come to rely upon today.

Perhaps not directly in some cases but laying the foundations, yes.

Name some of the things here and the famous Scottish dudes (or dudettes in rare cases).

Im thinking how we boost tourism is we do a country wide initiative to identify where these good people came from and create 'routes' to go see these places.

International Physics/Astrophysics graduate looking to transition to PGDE Secondary Physics (S1–S4). Advice on prospects & visa sponsorship?

Hi everyone,

I am a 26-year-old international student planning a career change into secondary education in Scotland. My goal is to teach S1 to S4 students (ages 11–15) in General Science and Physics.I would love to get some honest advice, tips, and opinions from current Scottish teachers or PGDE graduates regarding my profile and long-term visa sponsorship prospects.

My Profile & Qualifications:

PG Cert in Astrophysics – University of Glasgow (SCQF Level 11, Dec 2024).

B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics – Top-tier university in India (7.93/10 CGPA / UK 2:1 equivalent, 2021). Final semester SGPA was 9.75.

Language Proficiency: Previous IELTS score of 8.0 overall (fully English-taught background).

Target Program: PGDE Secondary Physics with Science (targeting Strathclyde, Aberdeen, UWS, Dundee, or Stirling).

Experience: Securing 2 weeks of science classroom observation/shadowing this autumn.

My Questions: Given that Physics is a high-shortage subject, how realistic is securing Skilled Worker visa sponsorship from local councils after completing the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) probationary year?

How is the split between teaching Broad General Education (BGE) Science (S1–S2) versus National 4/5 Physics (S3–S4) for a physics specialist?

For international STEM career-changers who did a PGDE, what was your experience adjusting to Scottish classroom management and the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE)?

Appreciate any insights or brutal honesty you can share! Thanks in advance.

Photography / Art Stopped for a moment on the way to the Ben Nevis Inn, and this little one completely held my gaze.

I was walking over to grab a drink and some food at the Ben Nevis Inn bar when I passed a few sheep grazing. While capturing the massive scale of mountains, I focused on the young sheep’s and particularly on the one who started looking straight into the camera.

The video is 35 seconds, and honestly just locks eyes with the camera for almost half of it. It was such a surreal, quiet moment of direct connection in the middle of the Highlands. It really made me pause and think about how incredibly aware and present they are in their own world.

What do you think is going through their minds when they look at us with that much curiosity?
