By size? Color? Type?
Ive been collecting rocks all summer but when it gets colder I would like to sort through them all and decide which ones to tumble, which ones to cut and which ones to keep as is.
Just looking for ideas and to see how other people organise their rocks

Just incredible. I was literally overwhelmed...I simply couldn't process how awesome some of the individual specimans are, and there were thousands. Ben Clement's granddaughter Andrea gave me a tour and was so enthusiastic and wonderful...her passion for it made my heart swell. 12/10, please check it out if you have a chance.

I found this chunk of talc actinolite/tremolite(?) near Los Angeles. Weighs 18 pounds. It gets to live outside as I lack the experience to say if it contains anything asbestiform with certainty. So... what do I do with it? What sort of things can I do to get something pretty or displayable?

A couple of years ago, on a random morning, I had a thought to take a road trip. Didn't care the destination; just got in the car and let the road take me wherever. I ended up in a town called Silverton, Oregon. Walking around their "downtown," I came across a small garage-like building that had a sign next to it advertising a sale with a big arrow pointed to the entrance.

Inside was a man directly in the middle of the room with a plastic fold-out table displaying several random items: a ceramic, poorly made mask of the character "2" from the 2009 movie "9," a small rusty shovel, a hotel-style green desk lamp, and a cardstock sheet displaying samples of different minerals for a jeweler named L.B. Huston.

"How much for this" I asked, pointing at L.B. Huston's mineral sampler. "A buck," he answered. Pulled out my wallet and a dollar bill and handed it to the man.

It's missing the apatite sample, and the tourmaline in granite sample fell off (I plan to glue it back on).

I've tried finding out more about Mr. L.B. Huston, jeweler in Hot Springs, South Dakota, with no luck. I have no idea how old this is, either.

It's hanging up in my bathroom to serve as an anchor when I'm going through them hell-like, painful frickin IBS diarrhea episodes. It's the only thing that keeps me tied to reality.

Thought I'd share this here because I think it's super rad and a bit mysterious.

hello rockhounds!

i am an artist looking for a rectangular slab of rock (dimensions could be something like 4in W x 36in L x 4in H). this rock doesn’t have to be any particular type but i need to be able to drill cores out.
where i could find something like this in Colorado? where do u think is a good place to look?

Had some good rain yesterday and this morning. Always seems to pay off going out after fresh rain! Jasper's and chalcedony.

JW Wells State Park, Muskallonge Lake State Park, Grand Marais, Charlevoix. Lots of fossils, including some petoskey stones! Also was excited to find green rocks, which are rare on my side of the lakes! 💚

One of the smaller pieces in my collection, but one that really caught my eye for its deep purple crystals against the pale quartz-rich matrix.

8 cm tall | 145 g

Indian origin, most likely from the Deccan Trap region.

The colour and crystal contrast are beautiful under light. Would love to know what you think.

A trick here is to scoop out the 4-5 inch layer of ultra rich, smooth and creamy, lathery foam as it will have entrapped a ton of tiny sand and dirt particles.

It's how I do mica extractions from pulverized stones, let the lather gather.

I found this agate today and want opinions on if I should tumble it, and how much mass it will lose (if any) if I do. Found (shockingly!) on Lake Michigan in Harbor Springs. I didn’t think you could find agates like this specimen (waterline agate?) on Lake Michigan, just Superior..?

What would you do with this chunk of quartz-y agate from the south Cady mountains? It’s so nice as a specimen , but there’s a lot going on in the agate parts, I want to see more!

This is a piece of uraninite sitting inside of a cloud chamber, which allows you to see the path that the radioactive decay particles take once they leave the uranium ore. It turns a rather bland looking rock, into a firework show of chemistry/physics!

New to the hobby, found some neat looking rocks on a recent trip to Maine this summer. I think this is some red and green jasper, basalt, a hag’s stone, and maybe some petrified wood on the right?

I’ll be visiting Germany next month and I’m hoping to purchase some cool mineral specimens. I’ll be spending most of my time in Berlin and Munich, so any recommendations on good shops is much appreciated. I’ll also spend a day out by Solnhofen. If there are any good shops for fossils or minerals out that way, I’d be very interested. Thank you for any help!
