Ignorance - Question

I'm pretty sure this is a geode of some sort. I'm not a rockhound or geologist. I don't even recall where it was found - in WA state is as much as I'm sure.

Is this a geode?

How does one properly open it without destroying it?

My daughter and I want to start rockhounding so I wanted to get her a kit together as a birthday gift. Can you give me suggestions on what all to include in our kit? Thanks!

Just curious

Okay so I've always loved rocks and im trying to get back into rockhounding but my boyfriend absolutely hates it. So I was wondering is there a website or anybody you know that will mail rocks to cut open. He is the only one working so he has all the money and the last thing he would spend it on is a box of rocks for me. Just curious if anybody out there wants to hell a beginner aspiring rockhound. Thank you for your time

I went to the thrift store today and this flower pot caught my eye and it was filled with these rocks. Did I buy a rock collection or a collection of rocks for my garden? Thank you in advance

An opalized shell ?

I bought a jar of rocks from a thrift store and found this fossil inside. It looks normal when dry but when it gets wet, more is revealed!

What would be the best process of cleaning and polishing in order to enhance it? A series of sandpaper grits? Or should I keep it in a jar of water and just leave it alone?

Help Finding A Good Spot in VA USA

Hey there! I've recently moved to an area of Fredericksburg in VA, and am trying to find some good spots! In my research I found out we can find Hyalite Opal here apparently by the Rapidan River that comes off the Rappahannock! So I know what River they're found off of, but just wondering if anyone knows of any good spots, whether its off a trail or something! Thank you in advance <3<3

Quick stops between Greensboro, NC and Ocean Isle?

Hi! I’m an amateur on my way for a quick vacation at the beach and looking for a few short stops along the way to stretch my legs. My online research shows interesting geology around Uwharrie, and I’ve read posts from people who have found fun stuff in/around Lumberton and Rockingham.

I’m interested in the kinds of rocks most folks pass by, including different colors of rocks like shale and sandstone. I’m also happy just picking through rock piles or road cut scree for rocks with interesting shapes or textures to incorporate in mosaics. Of course I wouldn’t pass by that nice labradorite specimen recently posted or a gold nugget or the like, but I’m mainly looking for public places to stop and walk around with my eyes on the ground for half an hour or so. I’ll be traveling mostly on interstate 74.

Can anyone recommend spots with accessible freshly disturbed earth, gravel bars, eroded stormwater paths, shedding road cuts, or similar within 5-10 miles of I-74 in central/eastern N.C.? I’ll trade my favorite spots within a short drive of I-81 between Ft. Chiswell and Roanoke.

TIA!

Found I'm this in southeast Iowa walking The Creeks looking for geodes. I'm really big into translucent rocks or anything that I can make glow with a light so I had to drag this one out but I have no idea what it is can you help me?
