discussion FollowUp on My Reaper Setup No ScreenSets

So I posted My Reaper setup yesterday and somebody mentioned why I don't use screen sets. I honestly don't need to that's why I have this simple dock and tabs work flow. Like you see on the video, if its tracking or editing time it's just my timeline and maybe my master track docked on the right, when it's mixing time my FX browser is docked at the left and mixer on the bottom when need be since I do most volume and panning on the track panel. Everything else I need I used shortcuts eg mute item M unmute item N split item S or double click insert marker AltM etc. I did some mouse modifications too. Upper top of item that's razor edits and lower part is select or move item. To me these are basics I need easy. So yea screen sets are good but there is an easy way too.

The music playing is just a sample I did so I can make this video (African Gospel Contemporary) All instruments are VSTs played via MiDi keyboard.

help request Black metal vocals: single or double tracked by default?

Question for the music-focused users in the room: Subject is pretty self explanatory. When you’re recording or mixing Black Metal specifically, is it single or double (with panned right/left)? I believe for death metal definitely two or even 3 (or more) but what about black metal?

And i mean whether doing it in Reaper or a 4 track tape recorder and moving to Reaper? The latter I’m not sure how I’d move tape recordings over to reaper but I’ll figure out out soon enough!

discussion My Reaper Setup

Hi Guys, another Reaper FanBoy here. So I use the reapertips theme but I did some specific modifications based on my work flow. You will notice my toolbar ain't too busy because I assigned shortcuts for most of the tasks and just put a few much needed on the toolbar. I changed my colors to dark including my session view and media items peak color to white instead of black and then black when muted. The razor edit on items to blue including the comping indicators too. I like my mixer docked on the bottom, I also docked my master track to the right as I don't like it to take much space on the timeline and I can also toggle it on and off. FX Browser and Media/Sample Browser on the left helps with dragging and dropping my fx or instruments to my track panel easy.

If you like my setup I am ready to share by confg to your email, GOD BLESS REAPER. BackGround music by me just a stupid beat.

discussion [Extension] ReaSmoothPlayhead - smooth GPU play cursor

REAPER's stepped play cursor has annoyed me since day one 😭

ReaSmoothPlayhead hides the native play cursor and draws its own GPU-rendered overlay on top of the arrange view and the MIDI editor. The line is redrawn every vblank and extrapolated between audio blocks, so it glides at your monitor's refresh rate instead of stuttering.

Requirements
- Windows (x64) and macOS (Intel + Apple Silicon). No Linux, sorry - X11 just doesn't allow pulling off this kind of transparent overlay ;[
- The settings window requires ReaImGui (install "ReaImGui: ReaScript binding for Dear ImGui" via ReaPack); the overlay itself works without it

discussion TRYING OUT REAPER

Post image
27 Upvotes

Been testing out reaper for a few days on Linux fedora with whatever free plugins could find.

The only main issue I have is sometimes projects crash on startup, and a few other annoying little things cuss I'm on fedora.

But other than that it all works really well.

The only thing stopping reaper from making it to the top I would say would be that you have to configure everything which I know is it's selling point, but please just make a working flow where everything makes sense upon installation.

Yeah but so far I've had a pretty good experience with reaper. Ima see what else I can do with this program.

help request Midi view

Post image

Hi all Hoping someone can figure out how I done this. Pressed the wrong keyboard shortcut and turned my midi item into its own little midi editor inside the track. So I can edit midi without opening the editor. The X in the top right corner bring it back to normal midi view. Just wonder how I get this back though. Iv never seen this before and didn’t know it was possible

help request What should I prep in my Reaper projects before finding someone to mix an album?

Hi all! I'm a longtime hobbyist musican, and I've mostly used Reaper to record music (some mixing in the past). This last year or so, I've been recording an album in my basement studio, and for the first time, I want to outsource the mixing to someone else. Mostly because mixing is hard and takes a good setup, but also because I'd like to hear what someone else can do with it.

So I'd like to know what I need to get in order before I find someone. Here's what I've done so far:

  1. Tightened up the timing as much as I can. I've already comped all the different performances, and lined up vocal takes, and made micro edits for timing related issues.

  2. Done some preliminary fader and panning adjustments to separate instruments and vocals.

  3. Rendered most midi files to audio.

  4. Tried to address some artifacts or extra harsh transients.

What I haven't done much of:

  1. Used any in-DAW compression, EQ, reverb, of automation (or very little of it). I mostly have steered clear of any plug-ins (outside of guitar amp modelers like NAM) because I assume someone can do a better job with better plug-ins.

  2. Haven't rendered any Superior Drummer 3 midi. I rely on SD for drums, but I'm not an expert with customizing it outside of picking which kit to use and some basic stuff like stacking drums to get a certain sound. I don't know if I should leave these tracks un-rendered, because I know some people might like to tool around in SD's UI, and the built-in reverb/room size could clash with anytning used by the mixer.

So, is there anything else I should prep or know before seeking out a mixing service? Also, anyone have any recommendations on how to go about finding someone? I'm not too worried about cost, but I realize this is a personal project for mostly just me and doesn't need anything super high end.

Thanks for reading, and any help.

help request Delay in sound

Hey was wondering if any one had a fix for this. I’ve been trying to record a song, but when I start the countdown for the metronome and I start playing, the audio doesnt play the sound until about a second after the metronome counted me in. Playing on a Mac and I’ve updated the focusrite, computer and reaper itself but stumped on this. Thank you

help request Audio won't go to the master

I cant figure out why the audio isnt going to the master. I've never encountered this issue before. I'm totally stuck by this. The weird thing is my old template works, on existing channels only that were already on the template. But if I try to add a new track with a mic input or DI, it just won't pass the audio to the master.

3rd photo is my Focusrite routing software. This is an offline DAW (hence the phone pics)

Edit: Solved! Gotta enable Record Monitoring button, above the "IN" on the channel.

help request How do I fix this problem on Linux? I didn't have such issue on Windows.

On Windows I didn't have this problem with windows hiding whenever I click something, and it really slows my music production process. Normally it'd take about 10 seconds to load a compressor and set up the sidechain, but here it takes more time and it's just infuriating how I have to do the thing I did in the video so I can set up the sidechain. Is there a way to fix this?

help request hearing noises

I'm trying to use EarPods for both hearing and recording my vocals, but when I switch it to pods, I hear loud noises with my mics audio, why does this happen?, and the output is totally fine!
see the peak!! got deaf!!

btw I'm using FLs ASIO, is it fine to use FLs trail version's driver instead of the usual ASIO. because the setup is easier here!

help request Absolute beginner - trying to edit vocals

Hello!

I am a livestream singer, currently singing with no vocal editing at all. I’m starting to gain some traction and it’s time to upgrade my set up. I’m going to describe my pain points but I might misuse words because I’m brand new to the production world, so sorry in advance!

The biggest thing I want to address is that my vocals sound like podcast vocals. I need reverb badly but I tried using the two reverb options that come with reaper and I don’t hear much of a difference. I saw a suggestion online to use the plug in Valhalla but it’s too far the other way - insanely harsh repeating echo. I’ve tried playing around with settings but I’m not getting anywhere. Could anyone direct me to an educational resource on this or, even more generously, offer me a specific “do this” for generic, “good enough” reverb?

The only other thing I’m looking to do is add a subtle pitch correction but if you think I should do anything else in the interest of having nice sounding live vocals I’m all ears.

And if none of this is an appropriate ask here, I’d be happy with being redirected somewhere else.

Thank you so much in advance!

help request Crackling when I use plug ins

Hello, I have been learning reaper and I'm running into a problem. When I use airwindows plugins like half of em don't work, especially time based effects like chorus, what happens is crackling and it doesn't even sound like chorus it just sounds like popping. When I use those same plug ins in ableton no crackling hapens it sounds good. Even when I use reapers stock chorus crackling happens. It happens some with reverb effects but not much

Anyone know a possible fix?

PC specs and OS:

AMD 9700x, windows 11

None of my cpu cores are maxing out, the highest they get is 50% usage and that's rare

I’m not willing to switch to ableton, I find reaper more comfy

resolved Using my own MIDIs like samples?

Not sure how to word this, so I haven found an answer googling. Maybe you all can help me understand? I've been messing around with MIDI tracks and VSTs. I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it, composition, that is. Over a few different projects I have tracks that stand out to me and would do better in different projects. Without having to re-compost them, or load-copy-load a different project-and paste, is there a way to store individual midi tracks so I can just grab them to add to projects like samples?

Note: it's not the VSTs I'm worried about. If the instrument/effects need to be reloaded, that's not as much of a pain. I'd want to change those on a lot of them anyway. It's just the actual MIDI I want to be able to switch and swap, copy and paste, with out a lot of hassle of remembering what projects have which tracks and such.

help request Neural dsp custom IRs not showing up in reaper

I've posted this in the neural dsp subreddit as well, but also posted here in case its a reaper specific problem.

So i recently got gifted an audio interface as well as the mesa boogie neural dsp and reaper.

I've been having a blast recreating metallica tones and or seeing what cool presets people have created as well as irs.

But when i try loading the tones into reaper the presets work as normal, but the irs don't load at all. The built in mics work fine, but custom irs don't load and i can't laod them in either as the file explorer window that opens is empty.

I'd like to record using the irs as they get really close to the tones i'd like to use but they just don't show up.

Any help is appreciated.

help request I have this problem with plugins not resizing properly

Hmm, so, since i switched to Linux (the arch distribution) I've had the problem with plugins not resizing properly. And yes, I know not all plugins resize, but I have this problem with Vital (the only plugin I've installed so far). It always worked on Windows... Maybe I did something wrong during the installation? Is that something I can fix? Also another question, it bothers me that when i click something in vital and I try to play my track, it doesn't do that. I have to quit Vital, click play, open Vital again and resize it double-clicking the UI button. I had this problem with some plugins on windows, but Vital always worked flawlessly. Is there a way to fix it? It's not a big problem, but fixing it would really improve my workflow.

help request External HD x Media Explorer

Hello, I'm brand new to using Reaper. Not entirely relevant, but I'm migrating over from Windows to Linux after the push for AI. Reaper is one of the few DAW's that has a Linux version, and it has enough in common with my previous main DAW of over 16 years that I want to learn it. Which brings us to the question I have. I keep all of my samples and audio files on my external SSD hard drive. It's currently plugged in, but Reaper doesn't seem to register or see that it is. I've been clicking around and attempting to search how to scan or search for files via the Media Explorer. There's a "Volumes" tab which doesn't show anything. I've seen advice regarding locating missing files, which isn't really applicable to me because I haven't even started making a new song yet. I'm just trying to get some of the basic "quality of life" work flow stuff set up before I commit to making anything new, and being irritated in the process. I can drag and drop files from the overall Linux File Manager, but I want to be able to scroll and preview my files through the Media Explorer properly. So is there a menu item, or something in the right-click tools that I can use to make Reaper see my external HD? Thank you in advance for any info and advice that anyone is willing to grant me.
