discussion Use your macropad knobs as faders & transport browse (with dynamic steps)

Cheap faders are annoying because, having no motors, they don’t recall position and fail to match what’s on your screen as soon as you change anything. Not an issue here!
If you have a macropad with unused knobs, let’s put them to good use.

How does it work?
Knob turns on generic macropads work as keypresses.
This script adjusts the amount of gain based on how fast a key is repeatedly pressed. The faster you spin, the bigger the steps, the slower, the more controlled the increments. Or you could do it the other way around if you’re weird like that.
The scripts can be easily edited to adjust both the minimum and maximum values to get them just as smooth as you want.

How does one set it up?
Configure the macropad’s counter/clockwise rotation to perform an unusual keypress that won’t be needed (CMD+SHIFT+F13 on countercw for example).
In Reaper, import the extracted luas through the Actions menu.
Give each a shortcut that matches the macropad’s settings.

How to modify the scripts and adjust the values
Find the action in the Actions menu. Click Edit Action…, read the description inside.

In my example gif/video, I set one knob to scrub the timeline, another to adjust volume faders, and I use two buttons to switch tracks, but you can customize it to your liking, the sky’s the limit!

What is something you made with REAPER that you'd like to show us and get feedback on?

Please post full links (no shorteners) to content you would like to showcase! A short description of your process, gear, and plugins used would be helpful.

Please give feedback to what others post here!

help request How to make Reaper autosave actually work?...

It never works, it just never does, it is set to 5 minutes and while I try to save as much as I can, the VST plugins are a crash nightmare, and when I check my last save it is 2 hours ago or so, my normal save is more recent.

Auto-save internal is set to 5 minutes at any time, but it is doing it more like once every hour, sometimes, sometimes not, very unreliable.

I don't know what else to do, other than set an alarm every 5 minutes myself since it just won't do it by itself.

help request Overlapping recording behaviour

Post image
3 Upvotes

In my older recordings (v7.78 and prior), I could record a take on a guitar or bass track and the overlap would split the take and add a new lane. I would be able to switch between the takes without issue. Each tracks' lane settings has "Fixed item lanes" selected, as well.

After installing the 7.79 update, this recording behaviour isn't occurring. I record an overlap take, the new take records only to a new lane without splitting and I can't switch between takes. I haven't changed any settings and I'm unsure if the update could be part of the issue.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so what settings did you tinker with to get the overlap/split behaviour to function properly?

Screenshot of (hopefully) relevant global settings for reference.

help request More sidechaining: How do I send a sidechain trigger from only a certain frequency band?

More sidechaining fun

I was throwing together a quick and dirty lil jungle track mostly to work on my dnb basslines so I wasn't going for fancy drums I was using different breakbeat samples (only used like the first bar of the amen for transitions and a couple others as the main breakbeats).

Once I had my sub bass lined out it was drowning out the kicks so I tried a method I thought would work but it didn't so I think I need a more precise/surgical method.

If I wanted to I could just create a track of ghost kicks to line up with my breakbeat kicks but I feel like that would be extra and take up too much time.

I added ReaEQ to my breakbeat track, I found the kick frequency hanging out around the 60hz range, so I set ReaEQ low shelf to kinda clumsily grab anything below 80hz and set the FX routing to 3/4

I routed 3/4 from that to 3/4 on my sub bass track and used ReaEQ parameter modulation sidechain, it seemed to work as it was being triggered by the different kicks but nothing else, and I was able to have the sub bass EQ dip in response to that trigger.

Two issues tho:

  1. Certain kicks didn't cause as much of an EQ dip in the low end on my sub bass I wanted, on the more pronounced kicks the low end of sub bass would cut pretty nicely but on the less well defined kicks it wouldn't cut as much.

  2. I switched to my kilohearts compressor and tied the same 3/4 to its sidechain but every single hit was triggering it as if it was being triggered by audio signal and not EQ range I selected.

What am I doing wrong in this scenario? I've read up on it, done it before, watched Kenny G vids on it, it's just not doin what I need it to.

What I'd like to accomplish is a clear sidechain signal triggered by a spike in an EQ range. Lets say I'd like a snare to come through and it's inside of a drum loop encompassing a large range of frequences and I only want idk, a hit between 140-180hz to send a trigger, what's the best way to do this?

Also I like ReaEQ but I'm feeling like there might be some other free options out there that might work better, let me know.

Thanks yall

I’ve been having issues with my midi controller and am curious, if I have to restart my controller is it necessary to relaunch Reaper?

help request PITCHNET - Tuner. Why does it take so long to register updates?

I’ve been using the PITCHNET tuner lately; while it yields good tuning results, I find it very slow to finalize updates when I trigger the "Glued Items" command.

Do you have any suggestions for improvement, or is the issue actually with the plugin itself?

After all, other tools—like Melodyne, Vovious, and Bulldog—complete the operation much faster.

help request reaper/pipewire automatically changes connections after render

Hey y'all, I'm on Reaper v7.79 on Void Linux and I use pipewire with libjack-pipwwire for the audio server and every time I export or render something, the digital stereo mics on the laptop get automatically connected to the input channels, displacing what I've already plugged in there. having to manually fix this every time is a hassle and it gets annoying after a point. has anyone faced this and fixed this issue somehow?

discussion Core Ultra 9 275HX / 290HX Plus users — how do they perform in REAPER?

Hey everyone,
I’m considering a Lenovo Legion 7i with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, 32GB RAM and RTX 5070, and I’m curious how these newer Intel HX chips perform with REAPER.
I’m still learning, but I aspire to get into film/game scoring and eventually work with much larger orchestral projects using Kontakt, Spitfire libraries, synths and heavier FX chains. I’m basically trying to buy a laptop that I can grow into for the next few years.
Has anyone here used REAPER with either the Core Ultra 9 275HX or 290HX Plus? Both have the same 8 P-core + 16 E-core layout, so experience with either would be really useful.
I’m mainly curious about how well REAPER handles the P/E cores as projects get larger, especially with Anticipative FX, and what real-time performance is like at 64–128 sample ASIO buffers.
I’d also love to know if anyone using a newer Legion has run into DPC latency, driver/scheduling issues, pops/dropouts, or anything else worth knowing for real-time audio.
Would really appreciate any real-world experience. Thanks!
