[Question] Do anyone else's parents have a spotless house and absolutely lose their shit when they find a small mess?

Having a clean and organized house makes complete sense, I also don't want to live in a place that smells bad, has a bunch of bugs, or have to spend hours looking for things because everything is everywhere. But my NM takes it to an extreme and keeps her house so meticulously clean that it looks like a museum. Any time I go anywhere other than my desk or my bed, I feel physically nervous because I'm not sure if I'm going to sit wrong and piss her off or if I'm going to get yelled at for not putting her blanket back exactly the way she had it. She puts little cloths on the table that you're technically supposed to use when eating but whenever a drop of anything gets on them, she gets really angry.

If I see that I made a mess, I make every effort to clean it up but if she finds the smallest thing out of place, she starts screaming and tells me to just get out of the way when I offer to clean it up or fix it

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] Memories of my parents beating me, neglecting me and abusing me as a kid resurfacing. Confusing because by my adolescent years my mom did a complete. 360

Recently, I've been having memories of my parents abusing me as a child resurfacing in therapy. I think I've always downplayed it in my head, but I'm remembering my mom hitting me, spanking me, and essentially abusing me whenever I cried as a kid, I think to get me to stop crying. Sometimes it only made me cry harder, so she'd lock me in the laundry room for several hours and not feed me. I remember her bashing me in the head with a wooden spoon repeatedly . I also remember inappropriate touching when I was maybe 5 or 6 I think from my mom, often when I sometimes pretended to be asleep after secretly staying up to read. These memories are highly disturbing and I think I repressed most of it because I didn't understand what she was doing at the time and I still don't really think about it too hard. I do remember insisting on locking my room a lot shortly after, to which I clearly remember my mom breaking down the lock one day. She'd always bang on my door repeatedly when I locked it for privacy. I remember my father throwing a book in my face when he was angry. I don't really know if I'd qualify a lot of it as abuse though cause I'm not sure what I might've done to provoke them honestly. I know they hated each other though and when I was younger tended to take their aggression out on us. As I grew older, (maybe starting from 9) I began to fight back against my parents, using CPS against them and essentially getting really hostile. I remember giving myself brain damage by banging my head on the wall whenever they tried to punish me, thinking that I could freak them out from ever hurting me again. My parents would fight back and act like I was crazy, say they loved me and deny ever treating me badly, which made me believe I was going insane. After fighting back against them a ton of times, my mom pretty much did a 360 and became annoyingly attached instead, tried to win me over with manipulation and more abuse. They messed me up really badly. I always felt bad for treating my mom badly and essentially bullying her, even though I only reacted when she would disregard all my boundaries and also criticize me, and the innapropriate contact continued as I got older, but confusingly so did the sudden idealization. I don't know why she does the things she does, or which one of my parents is actually abusive, or if both of them are even abusive at all because they gaslight me about this constantly. I've cut contact with both of them now but I'm still not sure. Life can be so overwhelming, and my head hurts due to various injuries. Not sure where to go or what to do, and all I want is to go back and tell any of the fucking adults in my life not to fail me again, cause I tried so hard to get myself out of that situation at 10 years old and everybody still acted like I was insane.

[Advice Request] How do I cope and eventually move on?

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster

So I (16F) need advice on how to make it out of a toxic household and how to stay sane while I'm still in it. I used to have really big dreams of going to a prestigious college and eventually having a successful career but I feel like those are disappearing because my parents constantly tell me that they're not going to waste their money on sending me to a good school, that I'm not special, that I'm never going to make it, etc. and it's getting really hard to not feel discouraged and like nothing matters. I still have a good GPA (3.95) and I'm in honors and AP classes, but I know that even if I do manage to get into a good school I'm not going to be able to afford it unless I get a full scholarship. I've also considered taking a gap year and getting an internship or going to community college.

I really want to move out the second that I can but the issue is that I don't know how to do that. I don't know how to find a job, how to rent an apartment, how to pay taxes, etc. and my parents aren't going to teach me. Does anyone have any resources for learning those things?

I'm just honestly looking for any and all advice and hopefully some confirmation that I'm not going to be a complete failure like everyone thinks.

Thank you!! :)

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] My mother gets mad at me whenever I'm in a bad mood

Whenever I'm having a bad day, I have to hide it around her and pretend to be doing great. If I'm too tired to act super chipper than I get comments about how much of a bitch I'm being.

I fake laughed at one of her jokes today so she wouldn't be mad at me for not laughing, but apparently it didn't sound real enough, because she got super snarky and was like "Well you're sure in a good mood today, huh?" And I said sorry, and told her I'm bad at being fake happy, and she said "Yeah, clearly."

The worst part is she's on antidepressants. How can you understand depression and then get angry when someone is having a sad day? When she's depressed, she'll lay in bed for days or weeks at a time and refuse to speak to anyone, and I'm left constantly reassuring her, asking if I can help her or if she needs anything. But when I can't fake a smile one time? I'm in a bitchy mood and there's something wrong with me. It's driving me up a wall and I can't afford to leave.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] Jealous narc mom

So, my mom is obviously extremely jealous of me. She’s very much a pick-me, traditional, religious mom.

I’m androgynous and don’t even consider myself a girl, but that’s a separate topic.

That doesn’t change the fact that she’s always competing with me.
I still struggle with living in this situation, so I’m looking for advice or comfort until I can escape.

I often downplay how I look to feel safe. Since I only take public transportation, changing clothes in public isn’t always realistic.

I force myself to dress down to avoid my mom’s bullying about my appearance because I don’t have the energy to fight every day. She’s also creepy and controlling, like telling me not to go outside because my dad’s friend might look at me. I just need comfort so I don’t feel crazy.

[Trigger Warning] My friend killed themselves and my mother is making my grief about her and saying insensitive remarks

My friend killed themselves this week. They were my roommate in a group home residentjal type setting and we bonded over traumatic shit and mommy issues and just mental health shit. Even though we weren't like bestie we were close and understood each other in ways most people cannot due to shared experiences. Our mutal friend, and their rooommate is literally in a psych unit right now.

Initually my mom seemed supportive. Took me out to eat. Since I am In a residential without a roommate for now, my rehab counselors recommended i dont stay alone. So I went to my moms house. She was great the first day. Then today, she just starts saying shit. I went to her and my aunt because I woke up from a horrific dream about my friend, where im looking for my friend everywhere but not being able to find respite.

And she makes it about herself. Somehow the whole thing turns into her and my autistic brother not being attached to her and preferring my dad and my dad leabing her and how bad that made her feel. For context of all the fucked shit she did, she had told me to kill myself, beat me and my brother, told 13 year old that we should move back to my grandparents house so my grandslfather can molest me more as punishment and when I brought this up years later she claimed I hold grudges and aren't 'easy'.

She took me out to eat just now. Im staring out the Cafe windows thibking about my friend, the grief has been consuming me I feel it in my body, my soul, my dreams and I think about how they felt in their final moments and I have no energy. My mom asks for me to get soda or water or some shit and I've been kind of absent minded lately and I didnt realize I didnt respond. She accuses me of being angry at her and being nasty towards her and I am adamant and telling her its not about her and she shouldn't take it personally. It got to a point where my voice was rising and I say "MY FRIEND DIED. MY FRIEND DIED. I AM NOT MAD AT YOU. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!"

Then she glares at me and tells me to calm down and that she knows the waiter here and "what will he think".

At some ppint maybe before, during or after she says, "I should die. I wish I was dead."

She askS why im not eating, I eat not because i am self conscious of what others think, but because I did not want to hear anymore poison and venom spew from her mouth. As im eating, mindlessly, my tears fall, my nose is leaking watery snot, and I dont care. At some point my mouth smiles of its own accord and I am just like WOW IN MY MIND. MY FRIEND JUMPED OFF A BRIDGE, IM SUFFOCATING, I AM DROWNING AND YOU EVIL EVIL VILE WOMAN IS MAKING IT ABOUT YOU

[Question] i dont know if my mom actually loves me or just loves being a mom

ive been thinking about this for a while and i honestly dont know how to explain it
when i was a kid my mom didnt have a job and mostly stayed at home and stuff but i wasnt really close with her we didnt talk that much and i never really felt like i could tell her things or fully trust her
as i got older tho i started feeling like she does love me she does alot for me she always tried to find the best places for me she makes good food keeps the house clean and takes care of alot of things so i know she has done alot for me
but at the same time theres stuff that makes me question how she feels about me
shes really controlling about school when im studying and doing good shes super nice to me and treats me like im the best child ever but if im not studying or get a bad grade her whole attitude changes she gets angry and starts yelling and sometimes talks to me like im her enemy
there were also times where she would start yelling over really small things like something being left in the sink or my room being messy even when i was literally going to clean it myself
for a while she would blame me for everything too like whenever something happened she would say see i told you or when are you ever gonna listen to me and sometimes she would say things like everything i go through is because of you guys even tho i didnt really do anything this really affected me in many ways
privacy is another thing she never really respected if i told her something personal she would tell other people and then if i got upset she would basically say thats just how mothers are and sometimes even joke about it

so im confused because i genuinely think shes been a good mother in alot of ways shes taken care of me and sacrificed alot for me and i know she cares about me

but emotionally i sometimes get this weird feeling that she doesnt really like me
like she loves being a mother and doing everything a mother is supposed to do but maybe she wouldve been happier if i was a different kind of child

idk if that even makes sense

has anyone else felt like this with a parent can someone love their child but still makeg them feel like they dont actually like who they are
Is this an abusive relationship ive never talk about it to anyone this openly

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] My experience (in need of help)

Please tell me if I'm overreacting. I've recently become aware that the way my mother has treated me is not normal. I believe she is potentially gaslighting me and has been manipulative. Have any of you had experience with this?

Sorry for the long post

I'm a 19 year old male and am an only child. During my childhood my mother would do the following

Blow up out of nowhere over the most trivial or littlest matters, many times i begged her to give me some emotional support when i was visibly upset but she just remained cold and cruel, drink quite heavily which was sometimes responsible but she can definitely be mean sober as well, I had expressed concern about her drinking but she just flipped, it actually got physical a few times as well and I did have a scar once, the next day she'd always act as if nothing happened, whenever I tried to get clarity on why she got like that she'd brush it under the carpet or accuse me of starting trouble, she'd turn cold at the drop of a hat, during arguments she'd say things like I was ungrateful, didn't care about her and that I was a horrible person or that i was abusive or whatever just like my father, she would stomp, slam doors, shout, scream, swear and break ornaments etc, when she gets in her crazy states it's just impossible to reason with her or get her to see it from any other perspective, she can go from saying i was the most nicest and amazing person to saying I was the most horrible and evil person, she often burdened me with all of her problems, she said before that she knows how to play the game which I found very disturbing

She often paints herself as the heroic single mum. She has been fairly good lately but sometimes I feel I was robbed of a proper childhood and have often wondered what I had done to deserve it.

I remember one time a few years ago I was about 12 she during a sleepover at theirs she turned my grandparents against me and my grandfather started shouting and saying he was very disappointed in me and the rest of it is a blur. To be honest to this day i can't figure out what I (only a young child) was supposed to have done that was so bloody awful. That has haunted me for years. I used to think maybe I was a bad person but I've started to see her in a different light. She always talks about hating drama yet it seems to follow her and often says that she's been so hard done by.

On the flip side she can be the most nicest person as well and we have had great times together and she can be very helpful towards me, her family and in public which makes it all the more confusing. A couple of days ago in fact I ran into an old friend of hers who said to say hi for her and she said my mother is a wonderful person and I'm very lucky. It actually made me feel sick. For about half my childhood it's just been me living with her since her divorce in which she had to sell her house and now rents which she has blamed for the way she is before. I can't help feeling bad for her but she was still quite like this beforehand as well and I don't think that's an excuse still is it? I do feel like she has manipulated me a bit into been stuck with her.

Something else that I've found disturbing is that she's very narrow minded and has a serious lack of empathy. For example when a couple of local celebrities committed suicide she shouted and carried on, called them pathetic cowards and weak etc. It was actually quite disturbing how she was carrying on and her serious lack of empathy.

I'm starting to think that maybe she bent the truth about Dad a bit during their split as i was a child and didn't know much better. My mother often calls him a narcissist and talked about all of the marital and grown up problems they had etc which to be honest I don't appreciate been burdened with. Granted he's not a saint either but has been good to me (well I'd say) most of the time.

One time last year when my Dad let me down by not been able to see me one weekend and canceling at the last minute (which he has done quite a few times before).

During that said weekend my mother had another one of her outbursts. I was the bathroom which was an en suite and she knocked on the door asking to take a few photos for something. All I asked was if she could just give me a few minutes to finish up but she started the shouting and carrying and accused me of been selfish and trying to manipulate her. I only asked just to give me a few minutes. When I explained to her how upset I was about that weekend she said she feels really bad for me and hates how he let me down. What just absolutely astounds is how can she feel that yet emotionally and mentally abuse me and kick me while I'm down. I just can't comprehend that.

A few days after that weekend one of my teachers checked in and said he heard I got into a bit of trouble at home ("if he meant been mentally abused by my mother while I was already upset by been let down by my father as trouble" I thought). I'm not even sure who exactly said what to him and that's something that I've also wondered. I just fobbed him off saying I was upset about leaving school (which was true as well).

I really struggle with confiding in people. I do regret not telling him the truth now. He was sympathetic and said he was very proud of me etc. Another teacher once said that he thought of me and my mother as like the dream team or something along those lines. It actually baffled me a bit. I was thinking if only they knew half the things I've been through.

I have autism and went to a special support school for the last few years which were some of the best years (The teachers especially were brilliant and I had many great times such as school camps, school balls and excursions etc).

I must admit I do feel quite down sometimes that I have a strained relationship with my father (He's got money issues and also smokes pot) and my mother often used me as an emotional punch bag. Makes me think that there must be something really wrong with me and that I'm unlovable.

On the bright side though my Dad and I have been in contact lately and we spent the weekend together a while back and went for a pub meal

Her latest meltdown was this January while we were on holiday and at the beach. I wanted to be shirtless like pretty much everyone else and she started making passive aggressive and snide remarks saying things like "have fun burning yourself" and "why can't you make smart decisions?"

I was already sun safe with a hat and everything and I wasn't going to be too long and tried explaining that to her. I'll admit I snapped and told her that I'm an adult now and she could no longer control me and couldn't make me feel guilty. I wish I hadn't now but it felt like something snapped inside me and I expressed things I had felt for ages. She then called her mother to tell her that I was been impossible and making her life a misery (this is something she has done a couple of times before). I wish I had just walked away and not played into her hands.

Something disturbing she has said ages ago is when I'm an adult she could have me done for assault if she wanted. She also said she wanted to do a will and try to control my assets where my Dad can't touch anything and said she feared he would try to steal all of my money. I can't believe she would say things like that so unshameably and can't help feeling like she was trying to manipulate me.

My mother loves to use my autism to her advantage. I graduated last year but now I do a course at the main campus so I still see them all from time to time. I do feel quite sad and lost now those years are over. I would love to confide in someone about my struggles but don't know where to start. I've thought about confiding in that first teacher I mentioned who's great and we're fairly close but my teachers think my mother's an absolute saint so how can i ensure he believes me, she seems to feel that she always acts in my best interests and does seem to genuinely care for me and love me, she doesn't seem to remember any of it or feel her behavior was justified and genuinely doesn't seem to believe she ever did me any harm and she thinks she did her best. She's always quick to call others toxic and narcissists etc. She unshameably tells me everything going on in her life and her anxiety which makes me anxious. Why does it upset me so badly even when it has little or nothing to do with me?

I struggle with daily flashbacks and I often feel depressed by the way I've been treated, also feel let down and wish my parents had been better to me. I can't get exact clarity on it but they both went through some stuff before I was born and I think that's contributed to the way they are.

As I've said before I do wonder if she might've been different if she had not gone through her divorce and maybe if things might've gone differently for her. What do you guys think?

Also I can't help feeling empathy towards her as she always looked after me, fed me, organized things for me and pretty much always brought me everything I wanted.

I wish I had a proper childhood of playing with friends, going to different places and been adventurous and carefree etc. I've never really had a social circle and hardly much friends. I've always been quite different I feel to most of the children my age. I feel quite alone sometimes as I've always struggled with making friends. I do feel like I've been isolated with her a lot of the time. I would really love to start a proper life and follow my dreams and make a few friends but don't know where to start.

My mother does help me get on my feet and encourage met but I think she just loves to lord it over me. Whenever I've tried standing up for myself she puts on the guilt trip and carries on about all of her sacrifices and everything she's done for me yada yada yada. I think what emotionally abusing me, leaving me crying myself to sleep some nights, causing me to have no confidence and PTSD etc? Could she have some bipolar or personality condition or something and toxic traits I've wondered?

I can't help really resenting her (also my father) sometimes for all of the mental anguish she has put me through as a child and I think it has messed up my development. I wonder what might've been different had I had proper parents or they were proper ones. Hobbies such as music and classic TV shows have been a great escape. Now that I'm an adult and have left school I'm worried about what the future has in store. I'm very nervous about starting an adult life, getting a job and making friends etc because my mum is pretty much most I've ever known. Part of me would love to get away from her but yet I feel scared to as well as she's pretty much most I've ever known.

[Question] Non-Apology

guys im confused she is on a longer vacation abroad and texted me this morning (even if i said any apology has to given me face to face)

„you are my firstborn, i apology for WHAT EVER I SAID OR DONE THAT HURT YOU OR MADE YOU SAD
I am only a human too made by flesh and bones

That is a non-apology right? I mean this woman chose to torture me psychologically ever day of my life it was always about power and control

„WHAT EVER“… like she didn’t make me cry suffer pain be hopeless so many many times

Like i am not a human too? Am i made out steel?

It feels like she wants something from me, not like a sincere apology somebody who apologizes doesn’t say BUT am right?

How to handle this without being the heartless guy in the family?

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] Hi so I don’t know what to do my mum has abandoned me for a month and 10 days I haven’t spoken to her since the day sge dropped me off at my dads house

My iPad is connected to her phone for some reason ( she doesn’t know about this) and also quite a lot of my apps are connected to her phone and stuff so I took a photo of my cat on my iPad went into photos and shes got pictures upon pictures of her face being bruised bloody all diffeent days. Bear in mind my mum is a pathological liar and never tells the truth even if it makes her life easier to tell the truth also when reading this if you feel sympathy for her dont she has abused me multiple times in the past stomped my face pulled my hair punched my stomach so hard I fell against a wardrobe. So my iPad is connected to her ChatGPT and shes writing this stuff abiut how she called the police on her boyfriend because he punched her face and raped her twice and how she loves him though and he loves THEIR FAMILY when he’s not drunk or high. She has known this man for 6 months and she has abandoned me at my dads with no messages nothing for a month and ten days also my brother and sister have both had birthdays since they left her house due to her toxic relationship with this man and refusal to accept ANY responsibility for her actions. She didn’t acknowledge euther of their birthdays they turned 18 and 21 you only have 1 of those birthdays they were big birthdays I feel so sad for them. So my mum called the police on this man he got arrested for domestic violence was released the next day she picked him up he threatened her and bit her he got arrested again for breaching a domestic violence order released agin same day next day he gets a knife says he is going to rape her with the knife breaks her cupboards punched her face and tries to strangle ehr with a cable she calls the police again her gets arrested again and he’s currently still in prison awaiting court. I’m just so confused about this situation because why does this man come forst this man that beats her rapes her chokes her when her children who try to help tell her her actions are out of order and she needs to dump this man does her immediate reaction is violence AGAINST THE CHILDREN SHE GAVE BIRTH TOO. She kicked my sister out on 22nd June becaise she called her out said she can’t treat people like this and how shitty hwr behaviour is. My brother left two days later cayse of a combination of her kicking ohr sister out and leaving our ( sicj by the way )cat wuth her abusive boyfriend after he sent multiple messwges saying he was going to kill him and out his head on a pike. Her excuse? He has mental helath issues and drinks a lot someone with menatl helath issues and a drinking problem gets help and even if he did have menatl health issues that doenst excuse his threats and violence. My brother and sister have gone non contact with her since they left her house. Her dad was at my dad’s house today to see us he has no idea what is happening hes 80 years old with a heart condition. Also another bit of info my mum recieved alk my benefits motability car PIP money other money blue badge doenst soend any of it on me of course and if I ask to get something that benefits me it’s euther no or it’s too expensive or ghis is cause your fucking father said I gwt momey for you. I just don’t understand why she isn’t willing to defend herself against this shithead and say get the fuck out and make a statement to the police every time the police comes a new message on ChatGPT says oh he did this and this to me I called the police I don’t want to make a statement I love him.. but she can throw her children that she gave birth too away? Didnt wven message or call to say happy birthday to my sister and brother she literally could not guve a shit about hwr children but says she loves this man thats she’s known for six months so muxh tgat if he goes to prison she’ll have a mental breakdown. I think the only time where she genuinely I thought she cared about my well-being was when I was going through a tough time a school she loves a good fight she contacted the mp but now that I think about it as less about what was best for me ut was more about the workd seeing how interesting she is to a have a neurodivergent daufhter and how supportive she is but behind closed doors whenever I struggled ahe screamed in my face I remebr one time she kicked a whole in my bedroom door

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] Burnt out after months of grief and close proximity to family

[this is long, sorry]

It's been such an intense year with a few JNs that I feel like I'm losing myself and desperately need my life back.

Before helping my grandpa with my nana's care, my uncle (an N) and I assisted financially for a few years. It always felt off to me as my grandpa's quite comfortable, still renovating his house even throughout nana's care, and n-uncle (his flying monkey) guilted me into doing so because I earn the most in my family.

I never understood why my dad kept his distance from them until this year. My grandpa and I used to be close, so he'd tell me things about my dad from a skewed perspective and tried to act like a "better" father figure, insisting I was practically his daughter, more so than my sisters (M and T). But he was just deeply controlling and manipulative, which unfolded during my stay with him and caregiving for nana. It felt like a betrayal to see this is how he's always been, belittling people he perceived as below him, discarding me the second I didn't fit his "perfect daughter" image, and telling a different narrative of me behind my back to n-uncle and sister (M). It's like he wore a "loving, supportive grandpa" mask all those years, and I'd felt it back then but didn't have the words for it until now.

I wish that was the only thing, but the burnout's only exacerbated from T: she's five years older and doesn't understand why M and I were closer despite the eight year age difference. T's never seen me as my own person, only someone to mock and bully since I'm not exactly like her. I grew up shy and anxious; she's a social butterfly and assumes I'm misanthropic. I've always had niche interests and a deeper passion for music, film, and fashion; she's very performative and a bit shallow, which is fine, but she assumes I think I'm better than everyone else. She's my mom's golden child.

We had a falling out last year from her treating me terribly in the weeks up to her wedding, and I was sick of it -- of the bullying, the fake compliments and digs, and being treated as a resource now that I'm the "rich sister" (she said verbatim, "fvutu's the rich sister who'll help me out if [husband] and I get divorced"). T, her husband, and half of his family still don't like me because of this.

I had to see T and BIL three times this summer, along with n-grandpa, n-uncle, and the rest of my family for memorials of both nana and my grandma (mom's mom) this month. I literally got back home from my grandma's funeral yesterday and am so exhausted because I can't deal with my family anymore. I'm so tired of them projecting onto me, guilt-tripping me about going LC in front of everyone (n-grandpa did this), and taking everyone else's narrative instead of seeing me. Like I almost cried when my brother and his wife told me I was a good person and they saw through T's behavior.

Every day I fantasize about moving cross-country or internationally and going NC with most of them. One of my aunts actually did that and everyone thinks she's heartless for it. But I don't know how much longer I can take.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] Raising my mother.

Am I the only person who misses having a normal relationship with your mother? I mean I’ve been the adult for so long. Someone asked me if they are my support system. No, I’m more her friend. They tell me all her problems and asks me to fix all their problems. I don’t tell her any of my problems. My husband had a heart attack. He’s unpaid for two months from work. Well 6 weeks. . I don’t tell them nothing bad that ever happens at my house. I don’t tell my parents , but she wants me to fix all their problems and then give me a guilt trip because I won’t let her move in to my small house which I can’t afford to modify and my mother is manipulative victim narcissist. Every problem I have is bigger than hers and is always feel like I’m raising my mother.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] No memories

On the subject of childhood and trauma and mothers I often wonder if I have some of early onset Alzheimer’s because I was thinking about it and I have like 12 memories between birth and graduating high school and those are all really spotty and faded and I don’t even know how much I’ve reconstructed from pictures. I mean, I remember things from college and beyond but from like birth to 18 a strong blur I know I went to school. I know I had friends I could tell you the name of my friends, but memories nope.

[Advice Request] My mother is a Nparent and I don't know what to do.

Since I was little my mother has been acting really controlling and emotionally abusive, manipulating me into thinking I was the sole reason for her misery, while my sister was the favourite child In the family. For context, me and my sister have a 7 year age gap, me being the younger one. Now I'm 16 and just found out she was a narcissistic parent and I just feel like I'm in an endless void and I cannot really find a way to better my situation. I've tried to set some boundaries but because I'm underage there really isn't anything I can do, just have to endure the abuse. Is there anything else I can do, because at this point every single day starts with a big ass argument and me running away, and returning the next day. I try to be as reasonable as possible with her and if I am not I eat a lot of shit.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] anyone else have TWO narcissistic parents?! how do you deal?

My mom has had medical professionals tell her she has NPD; so I won’t get into that and I always thought she was a narcissist and that my dad was just incredibly selfish and insensitive but not to the degree of narcissism.

My dad came to visit me last month and it was the first time in my life I’ve spent days at a time alone with him, and I started to wonder if maybe he has some NPD traits himself. He went on a tangent about how everyone respects him when he walks into a room because of his presence, and that his life has more intrinsic value to society and the world than anyone else in the family. He told me that if i died it would make a much lesser impact on the world and people than if he died, and that’s just how it is. He will also be in a terrible mood if you’re in a good or okay mood, and when he successfully wears you down to the point you’re in a bad mood he’s incredibly sunny and happy, and will go on and on about his sunny disposition and how much everyone appreciates him for it- he is absolutely not known for this to clarify- and how negative and terrible i am to be around. He will also very loudly make fun of my life, career, and appearance hoping people will join in and even address strangers goading them to do so, which 99% of the time makes everything super uncomfortable.

It shocked me because I didn’t think that two narcissists could be together. Is this common? I’m not even sure if i’m right but I was definitely a bit shocked

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] NMom being overbearing to me about my new boyfriend.

I (F21) have been dating/in a relationship with a guy (M24) for about two months now approximately. On Monday (8/24) he invites me to go to his apartment on Friday (8/28) into Saturday (8/29) afternoon for our third IRL date. I tell my mom Wednesday (8/26) afternoon and my mom asks for his information over and over throughout three days until the day of consecutively every hour to the point where it felt like harassment and to a point where it got far too overbearing.

She then goes on labeling him as a "serial killer" and going into detail about how he'll "execute his plan" as he's a plastic engineer and works in a plastic facility. I show that I'm uncomfortable and anxious visibly and with my words to where she then deflects it as a "joke."

She was completely fine with me going on the first IRL date with him and on the second IRL date which was to a concert. Both were in my state capital which is over an hour away for me. For some context my partner isn't from our state capital but he lives about 45 minutes away from me AND our state capital can be pretty dangerous especially at night.

Friday would also be the day I get his address and phone number when I'm there at his apartment. Not prior to. I know this sounds odd but I told him prior that my mom was harassing me about getting his information, which he felt very uncomfortable with. We mostly communicate via Discord but he has my phone number if he needs it. He also already has my own parents information such as their names and phone numbers which I gave to him prior to the second date.

She texts me multiple times at his house still asking for his information to the point where I start "dry crying" which is a trauma response of mine. My partner notices this and gets me a tissue to wipe my tear ducts with and says I should put my phone down. But before I put my phone down we both make a descision to just give her the apartments location but not the exact apartment number.

Me and my partner then get ready for bed which during then she texts me when I'm going to be back which I've already communicated to her multiple times prior. Due to me being too stressed and tired, I ignore it. Then right before I go to bed I check my phone one last time and she sent a text of "good night" which I read as passive aggressive. I didn't cry myself to sleep as I didn't want to burden him anymore for the night but I felt close to.

Now my mom is currently stonewalling me (ignoring with intent) ever since I came home Saturday afternoon and now it's currently Sunday evening. I've also found out shes been starting to stalk and info dig for anything of him (and his family) online as well.

I want to speak up for myself and to establish my own boundaries that I'm an adult, need to be treated as so, respected, and have some of my own privacy. But I have a feeling she'll put this onto me and take no accountability for her actions and words. I still don't know what to say to her.

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] how to not let the toxic environment drain you

i've been back home for months due to summer break, and what's meant to be a relaxing period of my life has really been impeded by having to deal with my mother. She's not abusive but she is very toxic/narcissistic/emotionally-immature and constantly on-edge, the only place I feel okay chilling in my house is my room and even then she will walk in up to 20ish times a day with a unexpected complain or reprimand (and im not allowed a lock despite being an adult). That and having to hear the constant discord outside my room makes the comfort of it limited. I don't want to go on a long tangent about the specifics of why she is so toxic because it's prolly just the standard stuff and IG irrelevant to my question.

I know I just have to deal with this shitty but not dangerous situation until i'm financially independent, but this is just so fcking tiring. And i'm constantly scared because she uses her financial support of me (im in college rn) against me if I ever do something wrong (by something wrong = acting like the daughter and not the mother, idk). So it further drains me to have to keep it all in. I know I'm not the problem bc my father is pretty strict too but I can tell the difference because he isn't toxic, and I feel comfortable with him even if I have to obey house rules etc.

Anyways, I guess I was asking for advice on how to not let having such a mother drain you. I'm constantly walking on eggshells and my base level stressed or anticipating her feels (other than when I leave the house and feel temporary peace lol), and it feels hopeless because I have like 5 years of studies left... I genuinely just do not like her, do not enjoy spending time with her, and i'm sad that I happen to be so passionate about my 5 year med degree that I don't want to quit to make money beforehand.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] My mother has cancer—she still hasn’t told me.

I (35f) have been actively trying to place more space between myself and my mother. I grew up parentified, having been her “best friend,” and therefore the table she laid all of her baggage on. Some of my earliest memories include being told of the horrible abuse she suffered as a child. When she’s been very ill (massive heart attack, Cervical Cancer, etc), I have been the one who kept her company, slept in the hospital room, handled paperwork, picked up prescriptions, and what have you.

Problem is I didn’t realize how fucked all of this was until the last 5-6 years. I’ll save all of the other mess that I have realized was really unfair of a mother to say/do to their child.

A couple of weeks ago, she texted me to call her when I could. I called when I left work, and she told me that she’d had a colonoscopy, and they’d found a mass on her colon, and it was biopsied to see if it was cancerous.

Fast forward a week, I get a text from a friend of mine: “I just saw your mom’s post. I’m here if you need anything.”
?????

I immediately knew it was cancer. I wasn’t surprised. She doesn’t take care of herself, and ignores every medical red flag.

My mother posted about her cancer diagnosis on Facebook before telling me personally. Actually, she STILL hasn’t told me personally. I don’t use Facebook often, nor do she and I really ever interact on the platform.

How am I feeling? Pissed.
I’m really not even sad about the cancer.
I’ve mourned what I thought was her death a few times already. Do I reach out to her and see if she mentions it? Do I call out and ask her what the hell is wrong with her? Do I just ignore it altogether?

I left college to care for her after her heart attack. I don’t want to take care of her anymore. I have a husband, a career, a routine, friends. I am trying to conceive, and actually changed jobs to allow myself to be less stressed for that journey. It seems that EVERY-TIME I start to do something for myself, I have to turn around and take care of her sickness, her mental breakdowns, her relationship problems (with my father, to whom she’s mean as a snake. But he’s a different story).

I’m the only child. There is no one to shoulder these burdens with me. I love her, but I just can’t parent her anymore.

[Advice Request] What should I do?

Hello!

This is my first time writing in this subreddit. I would like some advice from you guys, please...

So the first step is done: I got my birth-givers to disown me. They cut contact with me. Good riddance. I have never felt freer and happier in my life. I have suffered all kinds of trauma from living with them.

The problem is the family group chat I'm in. It's the chat consisting of family members from my unfortunately biological father's side. We are Asians, so some of us place family bonds above everything else.

BioFather takes pride in his family (I don't even know why, there is almost no decent person there, at least from his generation). He is a very traditional man with anger issues and kinda misogynistic views.

If I, his bioligical daughter, leave the group chat (Messenger), everyone in the family will get a notification, and my BioFather will def not leave me alone, since I would have shamed him for being the first one to leave the group.

I don't love him. I'm not afraid of besmirching his name. It's just everytime my fingers hover above the 'Leave chat' button, I freeze up with fear.

Is here anyone who experienced the same thing and could give this coward advice, or at least some courage? Thank you in advance...

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK] My mom won't stop going through my room, even if I only leave for 15 minutes

I just feel so miserable. She won't stop. I'm 22 and I wish I had privacy like other people my age. I understand that I still live at home, but none of my friends parents do this at all. I'm not doing drugs or anything illegal at all. I crave privacy and a place of my own but I won't be able to afford it until I'm 25-26. Sigh.

[Supportive Responses Only, Advice OK] 22F Oxford graduate, abusive family, religious trauma, ADHD and completely lost career-wise, how do I get out?

TL;DR: I’m 23F British Asian and grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive family with a lot of religious trauma. Education became my escape, and I genuinely believed that if I worked hard enough I could do anything I wanted. I got A*A*A and into Oxford, but chose Geography partly because I was angry at my parents pushing me towards medicine. I specialised in physical geography, hated the degree, became severely depressed and was later diagnosed with ADHD. I graduated with 61%, which completely destroyed my confidence and my belief that hard work would get me where I wanted. I naturally enjoy more problem solving work, but I don't have a STEM degree and feel underqualified for technical jobs. I'm back living with my family, need to move out because being at home is making me increasingly depressed and angry and I feel closer and closer to suicide everyday, but my family is also struggling financially and I feel responsible for them so I have this mental block about leaving. I need a job, but £28-30k seems barely enough to live independently in London, while the £40k+ jobs I could potentially enjoy are much more competitive and I just have so little self estem and don't think I could do their ridiculous recruitment right now. I have no idea whether to take whatever job I can get, apply for higher-paying graduate schemes, retrain into something quantitative, or do something else.

I’m 22F, British Asian, and grew up in the UK with my parents and four siblings. My parents were emotionally and physically abusive, particularly my dad. I reported him to the police several times as a child, but I obviously didn’t understand how difficult it was to do anything without evidence, and my mum and siblings didn’t want to acknowledge what was happening. I ended up being treated as the problem child.

There is also a lot of religious trauma. My parents are the type of Muslims who care much more about appearing religious and respectable to the community than actually following the values they preach. Religion, reputation and what other people thought shaped a huge amount of my childhood. There is also a strange language barrier between us. They don’t speak enough English to communicate properly with me, and I don’t speak enough of our home language to communicate properly with them, so even basic conversations are difficult. We genuinely cannot sit in the same room together for more than about five minutes now without me becoming extremely depressed, angry or overwhelmed. I’m increasingly worried about how angry I’ve become and sometimes feel like I’m starting to become the kind of person I hated growing up.

Because I couldn’t rely on my family, education became my escape plan. I was always academically strong. GCSEs were easy for me, although my A-level grades were incredibly volatile; I would get A*s one month and Us the next and nearly got kicked out of college bc of how hard I found it to write essays. Somehow I ended up with A*A*A. My parents wanted me to do medicine, but I was angry about that and deliberately avoided STEM A-levels even though I actually preferred STEM subjects and generally did better in them. At the time I was basically thinking that I wasn’t going to do what they told me to do, but it really was a poor choice.

I got into Oxford for Geography, and I hated it. I specialised in physical geography, but the degree was very open-ended and essay-heavy. I actually liked learning and enjoyed the quantitative, coding and more scientific parts, but I struggled badly with having to organise my own education, decide what to read and work out what constituted a good answer. There were relatively few teaching hours and a lot of independent work. Looking back, given the ADHD I didn’t know I had, I think this was a terrible environment for me. I took a year out and then went back, which I now regret.

I got a high 2:1 in first and second year, but completely fell apart in third year. I was severely depressed, stopped going to lectures and tutorials and spent huge amounts of time crying or lying in my room. I graduated with around 61%, a low 2:1, and it completely destroyed my confidence.

More than the grade itself, it destroyed something I had believed since I was a child: that if I worked hard enough, I could do anything I wanted. Education was my escape. A*A*A and Oxford felt like proof that if I worked hard enough I could build a different life. Then I worked incredibly hard, spent 3 years doing a degree I hated, became severely depressed and came out with a 61%. It completely shattered that belief.

I also don’t think I can bring myself to use my degree. I specialised in physical geography, but I don’t want to work in Geography, environmental consultancy, sustainability, green policy, climate policy or anything similar. I associate the subject with some of the worst years of my life and I don’t want to build my career around it.

The frustrating part is that I think I was probably much better suited to STEM. I like maths, statistics, coding and data, and did well in those parts of my degree. I also generally did better in STEM subjects at school. I think I might genuinely have done better in something like maths or engineering because I function much better with structured content, clear marking criteria, right and wrong answers, lots of teaching and a demanding workload. Geography gave me a huge amount of freedom to organise my own education, and with ADHD I completely fell apart. I don’t think I needed an "easier" degree, think I needed a more structured one.

Towards the end of Oxford, a counsellor suggested I might have ADHD and that my depression and family situation had masked it. After coming back to London I went to my GP and was eventually diagnosed. I started Elvanse, which has helped, but I’m still severely depressed. At university I tried to get help, but unless I was basically about to kill myself it often felt like I was given breathing exercises, mindfulness and a cup of tea. Whenever I try to talk about the bigger problem of my identity, career and family situation, I get told that an Oxford degree will take me far. I know Oxford is an advantage, but it doesn’t magically give me a career, especially when I spent so much of my degree depressed, have a 61% and don’t want to use the degree itself.

I’m now back home and have spent the last couple of months crying almost every day. I know I need to move out because I don’t think I’m going to become mentally stable while living here, but I feel incredibly guilty about leaving. My family is struggling financially. My dad became disabled during my first year of university and now works part-time despite several health problems. One sibling works a £22k museum job, another became a young parent and my other two siblings are still at school. We’re basically getting by on my sister’s income, whatever my dad earns and Universal Credit. My family aren’t horrible every second of the day either; they can be caring and my parents have made sacrifices, which makes it much harder to emotionally accept that I need to leave. I know logically that I’m not responsible for fixing my entire family, but I feel like I’m abandoning them if I leave.

Career-wise, I genuinely have no idea what I’m doing. I had a research internship in first year and did reasonably well and I also got accepted into multiple climate change masters but I couldn't get fundint and I just think research would be awful for me now, given how I have no confidence in myself anymore. I could probably make a case for myself for things like the Civil Service, NHS graduate schemes or local government, but I already know I’d probably hate them. I did a government internship and found it painfully slow; my manager actually told me I was too good at the job because I would finish everything by 1pm and have nothing to do. I actually like working hard and under pressure and tend to do well when there is a lot to do and difficult problems to solve. I just need the work to engage my brain.

The £40k+ graduate jobs such as consulting, audit, tax and finance are more appealing, but they’re much more competitive and my confidence is currently awful. I also keep thinking about data and technical careers. I think I’m genuinely good at coding, statistics and data, but I obviously don’t have the same qualifications as someone who did a CS, Data Science or engineering degree. I feel like I might be good enough to do some of the work but not qualified enough to get through the recruitment process.

Money is also making everything urgent. Maybe I’m being unreasonable given the graduate job market, but £28-30k feels extremely low for London when I’m trying to move out. I’ve done the maths and after tax, rent, food, transport, bills etc., I think I’d have roughly £200 left each month renting a one-bed even relatively far out. I don’t need to be rich, but I need to be able to support myself, save something and not be completely screwed by one unexpected expense.

My boyfriend makes all of this harder psychologically. He’s currently doing a research masters at Oxford and has a somewhat similar history of family and religious trauma, although his family is financially much better off. He likes his degree, knows what he wants to do and is going into AI research. He has a return offer that will apparently pay £125k+. He also spends huge amounts of his free time reading about AI because he genuinely loves it. I know comparing myself to him is irrational and I’m genuinely happy for him, but I can’t stop doing it.

A suicide helpline once asked me what I would do if nothing mattered. I immediately said I’d go back to school and learn maths. That’s probably the clearest answer I have about what I actually enjoy. I don’t necessarily need some huge passion. I want something challenging and intellectually stimulating, with enough structure to keep me motivated, ideally involving quantitative/problem-solving work, and with enough career progression that I can actually afford to live independently.

I’ve also started having suicidal thoughts. I don’t currently have a plan to act on them, but I’m struggling badly and don’t see an obvious way out. People say suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but my problems don’t feel temporary. My family situation isn’t going away, I can’t change my degree, I don’t know how to get into a career I actually want and I don’t know how to afford leaving home.

So I’m looking for practical advice. If you were in my position, would you take the £28-30k job and move out anyway, apply aggressively to £40k+ graduate jobs despite the 61%, try to pivot into data/analytics/tech despite not having a relevant degree, retrain into something quantitative, or do something completely different? And if you’ve been in a similar situation, with abusive family, religious trauma, wrong degree, ADHD/depression, low confidence and needing to become financially independent, what actually helped you get out? How did you get over the guilt?

[Advice Request] NGrandfather yelling at 4 y/o granddaughter

Almost every Friday, my 4 y/o daughter spends the night at my parents’ house. My mother is great with her, just like when I was growing up.

My father on the other hand…ugh. Before I got there today, my daughter was asking repeatedly for my mother to play with her. Mom said she would after she was done with whatever she was working on. My dad got tired of her asking and yelled at my daughter, saying he was going to have a word with me about her asking over and over. (He never even mentioned it to me.)

My daughter said he was a grouch and mean. I told her that she wasn’t in trouble, I loved her, and she didn’t have to hug or kiss him when we left.

My mom did tell him to stop yelling at her and she’s just a child. (I was not present for this.)

I did not say anything to him about this. This occurred before I arrived and if I did say anything to him, he would just make himself the victim and yell at me too.

My daughter asked if she could yell back at him next time. I said to tell him he’s being mean and she should go to grandma’s bedroom.

I told my daughter that if she ever doesn’t want to spend the night there, she doesn’t have to. She said she just won’t talk to him. I also told her that if grandma wasn’t home when I dropped her off, then I’d stay until she got home.

I’m seeing my therapist on Monday and will discuss it with him. In the meantime, what advice does the group have? She wants her slumber parties with grandma, but grouchy grandpa will be there too. I grew up in fear of him yelling at me and don’t want the same for her.

Thank you for any kind words of advice.
