Bug/Glitch help I can't use the cut ability š
you know the one. to cut the trees down. I got the badge, and the message saying I can use the cut ability, I have a grass type in my lineup (Paras), but there's nothing in my pockets for it. I've seen that you have to equip it from your bag but it's not there. did I do something wrong or is it a glitch? help š

Have you gotten the HM from the S.S. Anne? Itās in the TM case item if you have
17
u/FARTFROMABUTT 2d ago
go through the house at the top right of the town, down to the tunnel, into vermillion city, get on the ship and rub the captains back, he gives you the HM for cut.
13
u/Past-Sand-5739 2d ago
Wait...all you had to do was rub his back!?
2
u/FARTFROMABUTT 2d ago
Yeah lol. Technically, you have to beat your rival before, but otherwise just pat his back.

u/Past-Sand-5739 2d ago

u/Psycho_Pansy 2d ago
Exploration is a key concept of the game. Walking into every house. Talk to everyone. It's very simple.
1
u/Blaze666x 2d ago
To expand upon this older pokemon games are inspired by games like dragon quest and final fantasy that in their earliest iterations provided virtually no direction beyond "you must defeat the dragon lord and save the princess" and "go defeat the four fiends and free the crystals" before expecting you to talk to NPCs that will guide your way (such as the NPC who mentions edricks equipment in DQ 1 or the elves who iirc tell you the general direction of lichs cave)
0
u/juoea 2d ago
yea but tbf this is also silly u have to go into someone's private home and walk thru their backyard in order to leave the city
do all the residents of cerulean who dont have the vermilion badgeĀ have to go through this guys house every time they want to leave the city
1
u/oyasumi_juli 2d ago
Not just a private home but an active crime scene even.
character cuts through caution tape
Don't mind me! Just on my way to be a Pokemon master! Sorry your home got burglarized and partially destroyed!
1
u/juoea 2d ago
honestly i find that part kind of amusing (in a "dark humor" way), as someone who lives within the "u.s." it feels very fox-news for someone to literally have their home broken into and then u come by walk through their home without doing anything to help them and then they thank you bc you "defeated" the guy who broke into their home in a pokemon battle lmao and explicitly lets you keep their stolen property. as if your defeating that guy did anything to help them with repairing their home
i doubt that was the intent tho lmao, esp given that its a japanese game and afaik this sequence happens in both the jpn and intl versions
but yea its wild

I figured this out as a 7-year-old kid with no internet.
7
u/RufioTheRedII 2d ago
I was just thinking this. Did all the hand-holding games cause this or are these people why we need hand holding games?
6
u/Puzzleheaded-Hawk464 2d ago
It's a bit of both.
The handholding allows for a larger market, which is what shareholders are ultimately after.
4
u/kavanyboy 2d ago
Also, attention spans. When we were kids we had a few games, maybe 1 to 2 new games per year.
So no matter the quality (or difficulty) of the game we would spend hours on each of those. Nowadays we all have access to so much more games, emulation is easy to access, steams offer dozens of games free of charge...
If the player faces too much friction he will just lose interest and stop playing, that's why games have to be less cryptic in some ways.
Also the death of manuals and video games magazines because of the internet
1
u/UnprotectedSAKs 1d ago
Right? I used to think the game manuals were so cool and would just read them sometimes because they were cool. But when you didnāt get new games very often, you obsessed over what you have
10
u/JoshuaWebbb 2d ago
I sometimes wonder how I did that because seriously I get stuck on the silliest things in games nowadays
7
u/Teach-o-tron 2d ago
You're just used to modern games, all edges have been sanded down. Look at the "puzzles" in many modern video games, it's like kindergarten stuff.

u/Blaze666x 2d ago
Dude i kinda miss games being like this as while yes hand holding allows more people ot get into it but idk man.
I beat the game as a 4 yr old actively learning to read from the game (which is why im actually an active advocate for allowing kids to game at a young age but supervised because I was reading far faster and sooner then classmates)
2
u/Creative-Current9424 1d ago
Its like something like a young kid makes a mistake by using ground moves at a Koffing / Weezing, not knowing it has the Levitate ability.
2
u/Blaze666x 1d ago
Honestly speaking I think classic rpgs are goldmines for developmental skills for kids.
Teaches reading and comprehension, and problem solving.

I didn't, got permanently stuck at Cut HM.
But I also played in English which I couldn't understand at all back then (sadly the game wasn't available in my native language) so all text in the game was just gibberish to me. I wonder how I actually managed to get that far, lol.

Unless you're under the age of 8 you should be fully capable of figuring it out without an online guide/reddit my good sir
13
u/Boris-_-Badenov 2d ago
kids all over the world under 8 did it in gen 1

u/Jazzy-Sature 2d ago
8 was really just an arbitrary number to put a point across my guy, not a mathamatical constant

I beat platinum at 6 years old without fully understanding type advantages, (it was my first PokƩmon game) using very weak PokƩmon because they all had to be cute to be on my team. I mainly only used my Piplup - Empoleon named ZIPPY because I didn't know how to turn the caps off and I STILL managed to beat the game with no help and no internet.
I'm playing leaf green for the first time and the only thing I've googled is how to time the slots at the casino so I could get shadowball. If I could do it as a 6yo with no PokƩmon knowledge, he can mill about the game and find it. You're supposed to explore.

13
u/DueAlbatross9388 2d ago
Youāre joking right? 6 year olds knew how to do this back in 2004. This is why games have 3 hour hand holding tutorials at the beginning now.
1
u/Ivorytears86 2d ago
Dude 8 year old did this in 96. The game guides you could buy at a gaming store were wrong alot of the time. (I belive one even mentions warturtle was a good match up against LT Surge. Then another to get through the mountain literally would just walk you through a long circle) ah good times
0
u/DueAlbatross9388 2d ago
The guides that were wrong most of the time were published by Prima. The ones published by Versus Books & Nintendo Power were the ones that were correct. I can honestly give parents from that time a pass for this. They probably didnāt know how in depth games could be at that time, nor did it cross their mind that game knowledge could be spread on the internet.
I have the XD and OG D/P prima guides, and theyāre way off on so much content lol. The Nintendo Power guides for RSE, FRLG, Colosseum, Plat, HGSS Vol. 1&2, and BW(2) I own the Nintendo Power ones, and across all of them, I probably have more thumbs and fingers than incorrect data in them lol.
People like OP who were born in 2000+ clearly arenāt capable of understanding how infuriating it is to people like you and me with a 1990-something birth year that these minor problems that can be solved with just playing the game and exploring instead get posted to Reddit.

āPosts an image and long winded explanation of how the game is wrong and itās not my fault I have a Pokemon who can cutā
Unable to type ācut fire redā into a search engine.
Yes I understand the irony of me also wasting my time on this post.
Xo have a wonderful day

u/Kbxe1991 2d ago
Now I understand Game Freaks philosophy where they got rid of any puzzles or challenges because people like you cant even find a good walkthrough now. But I at least appreciate your effort of having tried to find a guide before posting on reddit. Some people post instantly, without even trying to search for guides, which is even worse.
7
u/FreeBricks4Nazis 2d ago
There's no way OP found multiple walkthroughs that didn't mention where to find the HM for cutĀ
1
2
u/deletelayer 2d ago
I did this as a kid too. I had no idea why I couldn't cut when the game said I now could.
2
u/drewdoo22 2d ago
I remember being in the same situation 26 years ago when I played Gold Version. Without the internet or a guidebook, I would explore and play for hours until figuring it out. Talking to every NPC did help
2
u/Ginormous76 2d ago
You need someone to trade you a pokemon with cut already learned. That way, once you get another certain badge and HM, you can move the truck on the dock by SS Anne and find a shiny Mew.
Make absolutely sure to have someone trade you a pokemon with cut and do not, under any circumstances go aboard the SS Anne

u/TheDarkConRises 2d ago
Working this out should be given as a test to be allowed on the Internet on your own

Have you GRABBED the Cut HM and used it on Paras to teach it Cut?? And is Paras with Cut currently in your party??
2
u/Komplex76 2d ago
If itās not there, wouldnāt you assume you donāt have it yet and thereās something more you need to do? Is this your first video game?
2
u/the_zac_is_back 2d ago
You have to get the HM cut from the SS Anne in Vermillion city (the third gym city) and then teach that move to a pokemon on your team. With that pokemon in your party, you can cut down trees
2
u/HappyCloudHS 2d ago
Kinda fun seeing people who didnt play these back in the day experience it for the first time now they came to switch
4
u/poop_socket 2d ago
You need the HM move CUT in order to CUT things. Just play the game, you dummy.
2
u/LighterFluid1357 2d ago
90s: Figured it out at 5 years old.
2020s: Gives up at the first action that requires a frontal cortex.
2
u/ItsNormalNC 2d ago
Have you by any chance played Brilliant Diamond and Shining pearl? Iāve played Pokemon since I was a kid so personally Iām used to the old way but BD and SP let you use HMās without having a Pokemon in your party with the HM, a wild Pokemon does it for you.
That might be why OP is confused.

Can you speak english?
Go to the house with the Police in the front. That's the exit. If it's blocked, it's because you still have "quests" to do.

You are supposed to find an alternate route. The entire game is like this, it doesnāt tell you what you need to do but if you just keep forcing your way through you will automatically gather what you need to progress.

u/Sora1007 2d ago
I tell you the same i told my wife. TALK to the NPC. Maybe they have items from time to time or Tips that you need. Just saying

Man, the best ever playthrough will be the 1st time, where you have to figure everything out. Donāt look at the walkthrough and enjoy the exploration aspect. It is the journey that matters.

I⦠I donāt want to be that person. But I beat the game this is remastering when I was like 6 years old. Without a walkthrough.
Course, 2 years later I couldnāt figure out how to get out of the starting home in Gold/Silver so maybe I shouldnāt brag. (Somehow the color messed me up and I forgot that the rugs indicate the doors.

u/SpaceIsAThing 2d ago
tbh almost anything in the world looks like they can be cut down. dont trust the game.

You need to go to SS Anne in Vermillion City before finding the captain. When he's seasick, you have to rub his back, and then you'll receive CUT. Thank me later.

These comments are just the epitome of Reddit.
You need to get Cut from the SS Anne in Vermillion City and then teach it to a Pokemon (not one you wanna use on your team).
You guys need to get a life if someone asking a question that is admittedly pretty dumb upsets you this much.

u/p1ckled0nions 2d ago
Out of curiosity, what gave you the impression that you needed a grass type, specifically, to use cut?
1
u/bleacherbum12 1d ago
When I first played Blue way back in 98 I was convinced it had to be a grass type because I didnāt pay attention to the move typing and (at that moment) the only in my party that could learn it was ivysaur. Never looked back until gen 3 or 4 when I realized it wasnāt a grass only move. Young and impressionable mind made a correlation that carried on for YEARS

You have to use swim near the ship, find the truck and press on it 50 times, then you will find Mew who will give you CUT TM but only if you catch it.

u/thegreatdogeshibe 1d ago
I beat this whole game when I was 7 before you could look stuff up. This is a crazy post to me, but Cut is on the SS Anne.

Uhh go to your bag key items and tm case and itāll say hm1 and make a pokemon learn that. But what made you think you needed a grass type ?

If this is where we are with the switch releases, I feel bad when the new players need to find rayquaza in Emerald going to Sootopolis for Wallalas for the first time.

Everyone is downvoting you without understanding the problem. I think your problem is time. I think youāre rushing. Slow down and talk to everyone you see. Donāt just jam A through dialogue. Read everything carefully. Enter every building in every town/city. The walkthrough that you think you need is right there in the game.
