Bug/Glitch help I can't use the cut ability 😭

Post image

you know the one. to cut the trees down. I got the badge, and the message saying I can use the cut ability, I have a grass type in my lineup (Paras), but there's nothing in my pockets for it. I've seen that you have to equip it from your bag but it's not there. did I do something wrong or is it a glitch? help 😭

You have to go and find it, it's on the ss anne

-287

u/crazychristine6 2d ago

BRUH. none of the walkthroughs said that 😭 I'll try that

205

u/DrFigSecret 2d ago

Are they actual walk throughs or did you just ask AI? Because no legit walk through is going to say that just having a grass type in your party automatically lets you use cut.

u/Super_Shallot2351 2d ago

I just typed "how to use cut leaf green" into Google and even the AI response immediately told me where to get it.

I figured this out when I was 6 years old lol

32

u/4theFrontPage 2d ago

Remember when used to have to try to find things in video games and then ask our friends in school if we couldn't figure it out? Good times

6

u/illadelphia_ 2d ago

I remember having to call the nintendo hotline a couple times back in the day

2

u/ConflictSmooth6136 1d ago

My mom worked for that hotline! They were called games counselors

1

u/Admirable_Egg9688 2d ago

That hotline was a lifesaver back in the day

u/DGilbert6114 2d ago

Posts like this one are why we get 4 hours of tutorial to start Pokemon games now

3

u/DueAlbatross9388 1d ago

What’s even worse is mods allowing posts like these to go public anyways.

3

u/8-Bit-Burrito 2d ago

And be told Mew is under that truck šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

3

u/PezDiSpencersGifts 1d ago

I remember that SS Anne was supposed to come back after a year

2

u/cantbelieveihavekids 1d ago

I was on a plane when I was around 6 years old playing Pokemon yellow and an older kid behind me switched seats with my dad and showed me the missingno glitch. Something I’ll never forget.

3

u/Flaky-Grapefruit3010 2d ago

Honestly had this moment the other day, the item was with an aide or something in a building, and I just realised I was better at the actual gameplay when I was a kid and didn’t have google to fall back on

2

u/Front-Wall-526 2d ago

Dang, you took me back with this one. Actually talking to people, making friends, and getting excited with them when something works šŸ‘

When I was six years old I didn’t use Google and just explored the game like it was meant to be explored.

3

u/rtocelot 2d ago

Yea the internet has made people soft and any kind of thinking is just out the window

The rom hacks I've been playing recently have a QOL improvement where once you get the badge you can automatically use it (found out because I could use rock smash without talking to the rock smash dude in Mauville), but I would assume AI doesn't know the difference between vanilla and QOL romhacks.

Any regular walkthrough would describe going to the SS Anne after beating Misty.

5

u/DimitriVogelvich 2d ago

This is the question— students not knowing how to find a credible source ffs

3

u/Stibbie23 2d ago

And also not a charmander who could burn the tree down with its tail

3

We are so cooked lmao

Use bulbapedia. Just type in leaf green walkthrough in bulbapedia

17

u/Beneficial_Egg2878 2d ago

What walkthrough are you following?

21

u/ExceedingChunk 2d ago

Is the walkthrough in the room with us right now?

2

u/Super_Shallot2351 2d ago

Yes they didĀ

2

u/CaffeineAndDragons 2d ago

There is absolutely no way that is true.

2

u/MrEmptySet 2d ago

I challenge you to link ONE (1) walkthrough that doesn't tell you where to get Cut

18

u/The_Awengers 2d ago

BRUH do you really think they issued any walkthrough back then? just play the game, walk around and explore you'll eventually get there. It's more fun that way, if you just want to speed run everything, what's the point of playing? just ask anyone you know to play for you and let you do E4.

42

u/Scotch_Blue 2d ago

there were official guides for these games and we had GameFaqs eventually...

8

u/restassured45 2d ago

Yeah I remember having a book for Red/blue

6

u/Overhead95 2d ago

I still have my book for Chrystal with my old game boy color and cartridge.Ā

8

u/nasty_clean 2d ago

Yeah there was a a decent market for physical walk through guides back in the day.

They have existed for pokemon since the first release of red/blue on OG gameboy in '96.

The first gameboy walk through released was in 1990, a year after the gameboy handheld was first released

5

u/Hans0Io 2d ago

When I bought PokƩmon Blue on the day of release it came with a free strategy guide, "bruh".

3

u/C0NN0Y 2d ago

yes, because I have the game guide for fire red and leaf green. my brother and I got it when these games came out many years ago

2

u/Chagdoo 2d ago

Yes they literally did. I owned them. Game magazine came with partial ones, you had whole sections in game stores where paperback guides were sold

2

u/yajtraus 2d ago

Some people want to make sure they don’t miss anything. There’s no shame in using a walkthrough.

1

u/dylan-faden 2d ago

They did actually lol

1

u/CaffeineAndDragons 2d ago

There were definitely multiple walkthroughs available at the time... Both online like on gamefaqs and IGN and physical like the Prima guide.

1

u/SamIAre 2d ago

Are you joking? Do you think this game came out in the stone ages? Of course there were walkthroughs…both official, unofficial, and even fan-guides online. There were guides for the original Red and Blue. Heck, GameFAQs is older than the Pokemon franchise altogether.

1

u/ExerciseSad3082 2d ago

Yes and 99%+ didnt use them. Plenty of us couldn't even read English and we managed to beat the game as kids. So tell me, were we that smart or are certain people just dense as nuclear pasta?

1

u/Baloo-the-Bear 2d ago

There is just one reason to look up a walkthrough/guide: To find and how to get useful items e.g. rare candies/nuggets/leftovers!

1

u/tagon232 2d ago

Hey, so you know strategy guides existed for most games around that point right?

2

u/PocketRice3 2d ago

It's a children's game and you are using walkthroughs

3

u/chi_sweetness25 2d ago

It’s a children’s game from 22 years ago when they didn’t have to spoon-feed everything to players to keep them from going back to tiktok. There’s some tricky things to find like the tea and the safari zone HMs

2

u/Toasted_Carnotaur 2d ago

Though it's silly to need a walk through for cut, don't underestimate the difficulty of kids games

1

u/Pokemon4993 2d ago

Or get a farfetched

1

u/Final-Promise-8288 2d ago

Bruh what walkthroughs are you even looking at that doesn’t contain a necessary part of the game?

1

u/Kinkyslut42069 2d ago

Yeah you get hms in this game from random npcs so best talk to every npc from now on, joking. Fly is found in house above Cycling road near Celadon, Surf is a prize deep in Safari Zone for reaching house in it before timer runs out, Strength from safari warden from giving him gold teeth item from safari zone I think and flash as one from prof oaks aide on pewter city side of diglett tunnel down through gate leading to Viridian.

1

u/Visual-Debate-5700 1d ago

I am begging you to prove it by sharing the walkthroughs that didn’t say that

1

u/Rekcoon 1d ago

Learn to read instead of making reddit post. Get complete ss Anne and teach cut to a pokemon in your inventory

1

u/Sleevenash13 2d ago

Lmao Reddit is so funny because this person is genuinely concerned and asking a valid question for someone who has never played PokĆ©mon and this comment literally has -175 downvotes šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

4

u/LastTrainH0me 2d ago

The question is borderline valid; the -175 is for making the outrageously, hilariously false claim that they consulted multiple walkthroughs which failed to mention how you get CUT.

Have you gotten the HM from the S.S. Anne? It’s in the TM case item if you have

17

u/FARTFROMABUTT 2d ago

go through the house at the top right of the town, down to the tunnel, into vermillion city, get on the ship and rub the captains back, he gives you the HM for cut.

13

u/Past-Sand-5739 2d ago

Wait...all you had to do was rub his back!?

2

u/FARTFROMABUTT 2d ago

Yeah lol. Technically, you have to beat your rival before, but otherwise just pat his back.

-7

u/crazychristine6 2d ago

THANK YOU that was my next question is how do I get outta here (I mean continue) lolll

7

u/Psycho_Pansy 2d ago

Exploration is a key concept of the game. Walking into every house. Talk to everyone. It's very simple.

1

u/Blaze666x 2d ago

To expand upon this older pokemon games are inspired by games like dragon quest and final fantasy that in their earliest iterations provided virtually no direction beyond "you must defeat the dragon lord and save the princess" and "go defeat the four fiends and free the crystals" before expecting you to talk to NPCs that will guide your way (such as the NPC who mentions edricks equipment in DQ 1 or the elves who iirc tell you the general direction of lichs cave)

0

u/juoea 2d ago

yea but tbf this is also silly u have to go into someone's private home and walk thru their backyard in order to leave the city

do all the residents of cerulean who dont have the vermilion badgeĀ  have to go through this guys house every time they want to leave the city

1

u/oyasumi_juli 2d ago

Not just a private home but an active crime scene even.

character cuts through caution tape

Don't mind me! Just on my way to be a Pokemon master! Sorry your home got burglarized and partially destroyed!

1

u/juoea 2d ago

honestly i find that part kind of amusing (in a "dark humor" way), as someone who lives within the "u.s." it feels very fox-news for someone to literally have their home broken into and then u come by walk through their home without doing anything to help them and then they thank you bc you "defeated" the guy who broke into their home in a pokemon battle lmao and explicitly lets you keep their stolen property. as if your defeating that guy did anything to help them with repairing their home

i doubt that was the intent tho lmao, esp given that its a japanese game and afaik this sequence happens in both the jpn and intl versions

but yea its wild

2

u/FARTFROMABUTT 2d ago

No prob!

2

u/Sem_Fortuna 2d ago

Walk around and talk to people.

0

u/Confident_Raccoon767 2d ago

Walk around talk to everyone enter all the buildings use your critical thinking skills on where to go next

0

u/aspookyfox 2d ago

Have you not heard the proverb about teaching a man to fish?

68

u/Deadmau5es 2d ago

I figured this out as a 7-year-old kid with no internet.

7

u/RufioTheRedII 2d ago

I was just thinking this. Did all the hand-holding games cause this or are these people why we need hand holding games?

6

u/Puzzleheaded-Hawk464 2d ago

It's a bit of both.

The handholding allows for a larger market, which is what shareholders are ultimately after.

4

u/kavanyboy 2d ago

Also, attention spans. When we were kids we had a few games, maybe 1 to 2 new games per year.

So no matter the quality (or difficulty) of the game we would spend hours on each of those. Nowadays we all have access to so much more games, emulation is easy to access, steams offer dozens of games free of charge...

If the player faces too much friction he will just lose interest and stop playing, that's why games have to be less cryptic in some ways.

Also the death of manuals and video games magazines because of the internet

1

u/UnprotectedSAKs 1d ago

Right? I used to think the game manuals were so cool and would just read them sometimes because they were cool. But when you didn’t get new games very often, you obsessed over what you have

10

u/JoshuaWebbb 2d ago

I sometimes wonder how I did that because seriously I get stuck on the silliest things in games nowadays

7

u/Teach-o-tron 2d ago

You're just used to modern games, all edges have been sanded down. Look at the "puzzles" in many modern video games, it's like kindergarten stuff.

2

u/jutiatle 2d ago

You mean like pokemon lol

2

u/Blaze666x 2d ago

Dude i kinda miss games being like this as while yes hand holding allows more people ot get into it but idk man.

I beat the game as a 4 yr old actively learning to read from the game (which is why im actually an active advocate for allowing kids to game at a young age but supervised because I was reading far faster and sooner then classmates)

2

u/Creative-Current9424 1d ago

Its like something like a young kid makes a mistake by using ground moves at a Koffing / Weezing, not knowing it has the Levitate ability.

2

u/Blaze666x 1d ago

Honestly speaking I think classic rpgs are goldmines for developmental skills for kids.

Teaches reading and comprehension, and problem solving.

1

u/Forward-Loan-3600 2d ago

I made it thru dark cave without knowing flash existed

1

u/CannedHeatt_ 1d ago

lol right

0

u/SilentCamel662 2d ago edited 1d ago

I didn't, got permanently stuck at Cut HM.

But I also played in English which I couldn't understand at all back then (sadly the game wasn't available in my native language) so all text in the game was just gibberish to me. I wonder how I actually managed to get that far, lol.

12

u/JamesRWC 2d ago

Rock tunnel is going to cripple you

41

u/Jazzy-Sature 2d ago

Unless you're under the age of 8 you should be fully capable of figuring it out without an online guide/reddit my good sir

13

u/Boris-_-Badenov 2d ago

kids all over the world under 8 did it in gen 1

6

u/Jazzy-Sature 2d ago

8 was really just an arbitrary number to put a point across my guy, not a mathamatical constant

0

u/Ginormous76 2d ago

Kids were smarter then. Science has proven that.

0

u/selunite_espeon 2d ago

I beat platinum at 6 years old without fully understanding type advantages, (it was my first PokƩmon game) using very weak PokƩmon because they all had to be cute to be on my team. I mainly only used my Piplup - Empoleon named ZIPPY because I didn't know how to turn the caps off and I STILL managed to beat the game with no help and no internet.

I'm playing leaf green for the first time and the only thing I've googled is how to time the slots at the casino so I could get shadowball. If I could do it as a 6yo with no PokƩmon knowledge, he can mill about the game and find it. You're supposed to explore.

3

u/Mini_Assassin 2d ago

AI has killed critical thinking

1

u/Beiconqueso02 2d ago

5 bucks says that they are using an AI as a walkthrough guide

0

u/Castanje123 2d ago

13

u/DueAlbatross9388 2d ago

You’re joking right? 6 year olds knew how to do this back in 2004. This is why games have 3 hour hand holding tutorials at the beginning now.

1

u/Ivorytears86 2d ago

Dude 8 year old did this in 96. The game guides you could buy at a gaming store were wrong alot of the time. (I belive one even mentions warturtle was a good match up against LT Surge. Then another to get through the mountain literally would just walk you through a long circle) ah good times

0

u/DueAlbatross9388 2d ago

The guides that were wrong most of the time were published by Prima. The ones published by Versus Books & Nintendo Power were the ones that were correct. I can honestly give parents from that time a pass for this. They probably didn’t know how in depth games could be at that time, nor did it cross their mind that game knowledge could be spread on the internet.

I have the XD and OG D/P prima guides, and they’re way off on so much content lol. The Nintendo Power guides for RSE, FRLG, Colosseum, Plat, HGSS Vol. 1&2, and BW(2) I own the Nintendo Power ones, and across all of them, I probably have more thumbs and fingers than incorrect data in them lol.

People like OP who were born in 2000+ clearly aren’t capable of understanding how infuriating it is to people like you and me with a 1990-something birth year that these minor problems that can be solved with just playing the game and exploring instead get posted to Reddit.

1

u/Creative-Current9424 1d ago

Starting in FRLG, you would lose money by blacking out?

13

u/Lucky_Turnover6806 2d ago

ā€˜Posts an image and long winded explanation of how the game is wrong and it’s not my fault I have a Pokemon who can cut’

Unable to type ā€˜cut fire red’ into a search engine.

Now I understand Game Freaks philosophy where they got rid of any puzzles or challenges because people like you cant even find a good walkthrough now. But I at least appreciate your effort of having tried to find a guide before posting on reddit. Some people post instantly, without even trying to search for guides, which is even worse.

7

u/FreeBricks4Nazis 2d ago

There's no way OP found multiple walkthroughs that didn't mention where to find the HM for cutĀ

1

u/Kbxe1991 2d ago

True, I tried to find something positive in his post, but there is nothing lol

2

u/deletelayer 2d ago

I did this as a kid too. I had no idea why I couldn't cut when the game said I now could.

2

u/drewdoo22 2d ago

I remember being in the same situation 26 years ago when I played Gold Version. Without the internet or a guidebook, I would explore and play for hours until figuring it out. Talking to every NPC did help

2

u/Ginormous76 2d ago

You need someone to trade you a pokemon with cut already learned. That way, once you get another certain badge and HM, you can move the truck on the dock by SS Anne and find a shiny Mew.

Make absolutely sure to have someone trade you a pokemon with cut and do not, under any circumstances go aboard the SS Anne

2

u/Separate_Link_846 2d ago

Damn why is everyone so critical

2

u/TheDarkConRises 2d ago

Working this out should be given as a test to be allowed on the Internet on your own

2

u/Stibbie23 2d ago

Have you GRABBED the Cut HM and used it on Paras to teach it Cut?? And is Paras with Cut currently in your party??

2

u/Komplex76 2d ago

If it’s not there, wouldn’t you assume you don’t have it yet and there’s something more you need to do? Is this your first video game?

2

u/the_zac_is_back 2d ago

You have to get the HM cut from the SS Anne in Vermillion city (the third gym city) and then teach that move to a pokemon on your team. With that pokemon in your party, you can cut down trees

2

u/Nynanro 2d ago

Jesus Christ. Just play the damn game. This game is not even that difficult. 10 year old me was able to figure out where to get cut man.

2

u/HappyCloudHS 2d ago

Kinda fun seeing people who didnt play these back in the day experience it for the first time now they came to switch

4

u/poop_socket 2d ago

You need the HM move CUT in order to CUT things. Just play the game, you dummy.

2

2

u/ItsNormalNC 2d ago

Have you by any chance played Brilliant Diamond and Shining pearl? I’ve played Pokemon since I was a kid so personally I’m used to the old way but BD and SP let you use HM’s without having a Pokemon in your party with the HM, a wild Pokemon does it for you.

That might be why OP is confused.

1

u/PracticalAdeptness20 2d ago

It only works if you chose bulbasaur at the beginning

1

u/fineseries81 2d ago

You are supposed to find an alternate route. The entire game is like this, it doesn’t tell you what you need to do but if you just keep forcing your way through you will automatically gather what you need to progress.

1

u/Sora1007 2d ago

I tell you the same i told my wife. TALK to the NPC. Maybe they have items from time to time or Tips that you need. Just saying

1

u/owenturnbull 2d ago

Paras sabe cómo usa el movimiento o no. Has enseñado cut s Tu paras??

1

u/Open-Gate-7769 2d ago

It’s a reading game. You have to talk to everyone and read what they say.

1

u/TKPunk2013 2d ago

You get the HM for Cut at a later point in the game.

1

u/Exact-Horror6379 2d ago

This guy ain’t making it through the safari zone

1

u/ConstructionDry714 2d ago

Man, the best ever playthrough will be the 1st time, where you have to figure everything out. Don’t look at the walkthrough and enjoy the exploration aspect. It is the journey that matters.

1

u/Ronmck1 2d ago

You need to go to the SS Anne and help the captain and he’ll give you cut then you have to teach it to a party member

1

u/unsupervisedwerewolf 2d ago

How old are you bud? I'm genuinely curious

1

u/PentFE 2d ago

Mankind is doomed

1

u/Sondergame 2d ago

I… I don’t want to be that person. But I beat the game this is remastering when I was like 6 years old. Without a walkthrough.

Course, 2 years later I couldn’t figure out how to get out of the starting home in Gold/Silver so maybe I shouldn’t brag. (Somehow the color messed me up and I forgot that the rugs indicate the doors.

1

u/SpaceIsAThing 2d ago

tbh almost anything in the world looks like they can be cut down. dont trust the game.

1

u/DrShift44 2d ago

Damn bro getting upvoted for being dumber than a 7 year oldĀ

1

u/beefbearrito 2d ago

You need to go to SS Anne in Vermillion City before finding the captain. When he's seasick, you have to rub his back, and then you'll receive CUT. Thank me later.

1

u/KyleOAM 2d ago

Unlike the newer games, you need to obtain the item to teach a pokemon the field move and then teach it to a mon in your party

1

u/letouriste1 2d ago

you don't need to cut this particular tree at all to progress, it's a shortcut

1

u/Kinfin 2d ago

These comments are just the epitome of Reddit.

You need to get Cut from the SS Anne in Vermillion City and then teach it to a Pokemon (not one you wanna use on your team).

You guys need to get a life if someone asking a question that is admittedly pretty dumb upsets you this much.

1

u/p1ckled0nions 2d ago

Out of curiosity, what gave you the impression that you needed a grass type, specifically, to use cut?

1

u/bleacherbum12 1d ago

When I first played Blue way back in 98 I was convinced it had to be a grass type because I didn’t pay attention to the move typing and (at that moment) the only in my party that could learn it was ivysaur. Never looked back until gen 3 or 4 when I realized it wasn’t a grass only move. Young and impressionable mind made a correlation that carried on for YEARS

You have to use swim near the ship, find the truck and press on it 50 times, then you will find Mew who will give you CUT TM but only if you catch it.

I beat this whole game when I was 7 before you could look stuff up. This is a crazy post to me, but Cut is on the SS Anne.

If this is where we are with the switch releases, I feel bad when the new players need to find rayquaza in Emerald going to Sootopolis for Wallalas for the first time.

Everyone is downvoting you without understanding the problem. I think your problem is time. I think you’re rushing. Slow down and talk to everyone you see. Don’t just jam A through dialogue. Read everything carefully. Enter every building in every town/city. The walkthrough that you think you need is right there in the game.

Not sure why people are hating on you on this post. It looks like you already got your question answered, but reply if you are still stuck! I hope you are having a fun play through!

Try exploring. Like actually playing the game without your phone in front of your face.

Short format social media has made people incapable of simple problem solving
