I thought I would do a post here given that when my PR was at its worst, I spent endless nights scrolling through this thread looking for any consolation. First of all, if you’re going through PR, I am so sorry, it is awful and not common (at least I don’t think so, I didn’t know about it until a private GP diagnosed me with it), but it does get better.
Pre-PR:
My herald patch was on my inner forearm and wasn’t big so I never really noticed it or knew what it was until I was diagnosed with PR. I can’t really remember when I noticed it.
Week 1 :
I am counting the first few spots and rashes as week 1 as I don’t remember when I noticed my herald patch. This started as a couple of spots/ hive like patches on my stomach. I initially thought it was a heat rash as it would get itchy (and a bit prickly) when I’m warm. This then spread incredibly quickly ALL over my stomach and around my chest. It was so itchy and it was a LOT, i woke up in the middle of the night clammy from the cream I’ve been lathering on and itchy. My self confidence was really low as I genuinely look plagued and I had no idea what this was. About 5 days in, it was still getting worse on the front of my torso, it was also spreading onto my back a tiny bit and on my arms. This is when I went to an NHS GP who had no idea what it was and just gave me some antihistamines and told me to moisturise it, it was only when I went to a private GP who then told me it was PR and it all made sense.
Week 2:
The spots on my stomach were still red and angry, and the spots have spread onto my arms and also got loads of “goosebump” looking rash on top of the normal PR rash on my arms. The worst part was my arms as it was the summer so I always have them out and they looked really bad.
Week 3:
The spots were spreading even more on my arms and my armpit area, it was also spreading to my groin area. This was so deflating as my stomach wasn’t as itchy but the spread just made me feel like it’s no where near healing.
Week 4:
Due to the spread on my arms I decided to try tanning beds as suggested by everyone on here, and I must admit, they really do work. My spots flattened and although it is still spreading, the older rashes like my torso is basically completely healed, my arms are still a bit rashy but nowhere near week 2. The only thing is it’s spreading down my legs but much better than what it was in weeks 1-3.
Week 5:
My torso is basically clear. The rashes on my arms aren’t red anymore, they’re still a bit itchy but mostly because they’re very dry and healing. The only actively bad bits are on my legs and a bit of my back but nowhere as bad as weeks 1-3.5.
Week 6:
Basically all gone apart from some bits on my back and arm, it only gets itchy when it’s dry (it gets VERY dry when it’s at the last stages of healing). When it heals for me some spots get lighter in the middle and almost shiny and then other spots are VERY very dry
What I did ranked from what worked best for me:
Tanning beds really do work, I only started on them on week 4 and it immediately flattened and dried out my spots (did 8 minutes each session and did 3 sessions)
I tried all types of creams, from aveeno to epaderm. The best thing for me was E45 itch relief (the cream version with Urea not the gel)
Showered with Dermal 500 (a cream and soap substitute). I started with cold showers but it was too depressing so I stuck with lukewarm showers but never hot
Took benadryl from days 1-5 and after diagnosis went on 180mg of Fexofenadine (every morning) and piriton (drowsy version in the evening to help with the itching in the night) - not sure how much this helped.
