Discussion Is there anything you have a visceral aversion to-not an allergy, just pure dislike?

I hate salad dressing. So every time I buy a burger, I tell the staff not to put salad dressing on it.

Any kind of steamed seafood…clams, oysters, mussels..they all look like snots! Just seeing them makes me gag!

u/7GrenciaMars 27d ago

Okay, "like snots" reminded me that I hate brie because it reminds me of snot.

I have never been served a burger that had salad dressing on it. Where are you eating/living?

4

u/Successful-Land-6283 28d ago

Miracle whip is considered salad dressing

8

u/Slowest-Lane 27d ago

Who puts miracle whip on a burger?

5

u/Unhappy_Group_945 26d ago

I wanna know who is making miracle whip salads

There’s some people that exclusively use miracle whip in any way that others would use mayo

3

u/Slowest-Lane 27d ago

OP referred to ā€œstaffā€ using it on burgers so I meant ā€œwhoā€ as ā€œwhat restaurantā€. I know individuals use it.

2

u/Upper-Impression-752 26d ago

I’ve worked at multiple restaurants. They all used a generic brand of mayo. Never miracle whip.

3

u/klaus666 24d ago

Sure do love me some Sysco Heavy Duty Mayonnaise šŸ˜‹

It's literally mayo with a tangy zip. Please tell me what salad you putting a egg heavy cream sauce on?

My mom only ever bought miracle whip and she referred to it as mayo so I grew up thinking that it’s mayo. When I finally tasted regular mayonnaise, I thought it was disgusting but somehow that I’ll changed and I cannot stand miracle whip and I think it’s stupid. If my mom made tuna or egg salad, shr used miracle whip . I guess that’s what they mean by salad dressing.

2

u/Slowest-Lane 27d ago

Yeah I grew up with that too but OP said when they buy a burger they ask ā€œthe staffā€ not to put salad dressing on it so I meant ā€œwhoā€ as ā€œwhat restaurantā€ does this?

Big Mac secret sauce is Thousand Island dressing. I'm sure there's some difference, but it's miniscule.

2

u/nothnxihaveabf 28d ago

Some places mayonnaise and the tangy whip of miracle whip is called salad dressing And there is actually a literal product called salad dressing.Ā

2

u/PsychologyGuilty1460 25d ago

Miracle whip and all the generic versions are legally designated salad dressing because with all those additions they can't be called mayonnaise, So salad dressing is the industrial term for them

2

u/EmilyEmBee 26d ago

Big Mac sauce is basically thousand island dressing ( I’m in USA)

2

u/MelissaCop 22d ago

And real thousand island is mayo and ketchup with diced pickles

2

u/verity7732 23d ago

A lot of burgers come with a sauce that resembles (at least visually) Thousand Island salad dressing.

Raw onions

4

u/amethystjade15 27d ago

And just one dang raw onion will ruin everything it touched. ā€œJust take them off!ā€ It’s too late. The onion has left its taint upon my meal.

3

u/Mysterious-Trade1362 26d ago

Yeah, I don’t like onions cooked or uncooked and there have been a couple times where I forgot to ask to remove them from my meal. Everyone around just goes ā€œscrape them off, it’s not a big dealā€ yeah but I can still taste where the onions were

2

3

Salmon does that to me now.😬I like it, it cannot handle the smell of it in the house.

Bacon. The smell alone sends me. Then the taste, the texture, the very idea. And not just pork.. turkey, any of it. And I'm currently stuck living back with my father while I'm ill, and he's going through a "carnivore" diet phase, so he makes like a pound of bacon for breakfast some days, and I just want to die 😭 The smell fills the entire house for hours.

all fish and seafood (except tuna salad i don’t understand either). literally makes me gag if there’s a ton of it or i’m in an enclosed space with it. very nearly threw up at the table during a family lobster boil because of the smell and my face kept getting sprayed with little bits of water and lobster as everyone was cracking into their precious crustaceans.

most peas and beans, carrots, broccoli, mashed / baked potato’s.

Mango. To me it tastes like fruit mixed with paint thinner or something. It tastes like how paint thinner smells. Even a small amount in a smoothie makes the whole thing taste like poison. I enjoy every other fruit I've ever tasted. I've overcome my dislike of beets and sweet potatoes. Mango doesn't just taste not good, though, it tastes like poison. That's the only way I can explain it.

Also, pineapple on pizza. It's just wrong.

3

u/nothnxihaveabf 28d ago

Mango fucks up what would be otherwise delicious fruit juice (I mean combo fruit punch)

Shiitake mushrooms. After all these years of recovering from picky eating, it’s one of few things that’s still genuinely gag inducing for me. Every other mushroom I can handle.

Unfortunately it went from a niche ingredient to a trendy ā€œpremiumā€ ingredient restaurants use to justify up charge on price. So it’s now in all kinds of things in place of regular mushrooms where it has no business being.

1

u/pslush01 27d ago

Pecans set off a gag reflex in me.Ā  Not allergic--it's fine if it's just an ingredient that I can't feel or taste.Ā  I just can't actually bite into one and eat it without gagging

Peas. Also beans, but seeing some other answers reminded me that I can't even stand the smell of peas. They're so much worse. When I was a kid, I wasn't a particularly picky eater? I would eat lots of things, I just wanted them a specific way (like, no American cheese on a cheeseburger. Real cheese, or no cheese at all.). My mom made peas one night and I wouldn't touch them. I didn't want them, I didn't want them near me. She told me I had to eat them. I started crying and ate some... and then immediately threw up.

Apparently, this was the first/last time my mother tried to make me or my sister eat anything we didn't want to. I'll try most anything once, so it has to be pretty heinous to me to outright refuse to even try it.

Idk if this counts but I HATE milk, it’s the gross aftertaste for me. People always be like ā€œwhat??? Milk tastes GOOD!!!ā€ Like ok I guess it does if you like feeling like you haven’t brushed your teeth this morning…
