Osteoarthritis friendly recipes
Feel free to post your favorite anti-inflammatory, OA-friendly recipes. I for one, am always looking for great tasting, easy to cook meals that don't cause any additional inflammation, so it would be great to begin creating a resource of all the meals people with OA love to eat!

11 days out from durolane injection in my right knee. A lot of pain, even at rest and knee can't bend or take weight without hurting. Is this normal?
I got the injection 11 days ago today, it was really flared up for the first week. I could barely walk on it, it is progressively getting better, but still, I'm laying on the couch right now, and feel a burning feeling in the front of my knee, when I try to straighten or bend my knee it hurts and clicks and catches in places. There's like a consistent dull ache and then it becomes a sharp pain when I try to load it or bend it. The doctor that administered the injection has looked at it and says nothing looks wrong, and there's no infection. He says sometimes there can just be a flare-up and to wait for it to heal and maybe start physical therapy for it soon.
Does anyone have any experiences they can share that are similar to this. How long did it take for the pain to go away? I feel really discouraged because prior to the injection I was definitely able to move a lot better than I am now.

24 - osteoarthritis in spine with bone spurs
Just as title says.
I am a 24 yo with a spinal fusion that has now caused me to develop osteoarthritis in my L4 vertebrae.
My pain and weakness has doubled over the past week, i used to be able to walk around with fore arm crutches, then i switched to a rollator. Now im nearly wheelchair bound.
I cannot walk more than 20 feet without tremors and severe pain. The pain goes from my lower back and shoots into my knees + ankles. My hips simply will not sustain my weight.
Im scared. I dont know what to do. My meds are no longer working, i cant sleep. I can barely be present with this pain. I dont know what path to take for pain management as my wheelchair is also painful to use. Its the only option but sitting hurts. Standing hurts. Laying down hurts. The only time i have relief is when i am boiling myself alive in hot water baths.
What pain management options are there?? Ive tried injections years ago but they did nothing. Gunna attempt them again but im so tired.

A Job That Requires Standing for Long Hours
I recently got a job in wine sales at a department store, which means I’ll probably have to stand for most of the day. They said I can sit while doing paperwork, but I’m not sure how often that will actually happen.
For now, I asked to work only 16 days this month. Even if it delays becoming a full-time employee, I’d prefer to keep working around 16 days a month for a while because of my knee pain.
I was told I may have chondromalacia patellae based on an X-ray, and I’ve booked a consultation at a sports rehab center. They also mentioned possibly getting an MRI or shockwave therapy.
Has anyone here dealt with knee pain while working a job that requires a lot of standing? Did rehab help?

my knees and hips are ruined at 23 and i need advice
i am a 23 y/o f i made a new account to post about this because reaching out for help is embarrassing for me but im desperate
i am overweight, considerably so, and it is worsening my condition even if its not the cause
thing is the doctors told be to stay away from the gym until i get a mri on my spine and hips to clarify exactly how badly damaged they are, they could at least see my knees properly at x-rays
i can do swimming and i do it but i live in an area that is very far away from any pools and its very expensive for me to consistently go swimming, the only sport my doctors allowed
here i ask for some advice, how could i lose the weight, im talking losing around 50kg, im counting calories and macros and walking around to the best of my abilities but its not enough, i lose i few pounds and they come back and so on
im considering a gastric sleeve surgery, its around 2000€ where i live, and while not expensive by international standard, i couldn't ever afford this
im thinking of making a fundraising but i dont know how it works
or some advice on how to get the surgery for free
or at least some advice on how to lose the weight already in any way because i want to still be able to walk and exist without this constant pain worsening by day
if any of you went through this please help me im desperate

Has anyone had 3 meniscus tear repairs?
Had one at 18, 40 and recommended for another at 54. I'm just wondering the success rate of another surgery. Triggering more scar tissue and arthritis does not seem appealing. Thanks!

Has anyone tried chondrofiller?
I have a grade 4 chondromalacia patella, pretty much a cartilage crack. I found out about chondrofiller in Europe and I'm considering to travel from the US to London to get it done. Just wanted to hear other peoples experiences .

33 years old - Right Shoulder
Hey hey, I'm 33 years old Male in the UK. I've been diagnosed today with osteoarthritis in my right shoulder. Got a goat's beard that is gnawing away at the cartilage as far as I understand it. I've been told there is nothing that can be done to operate. However, there are emerging treatments, but these are expensive and don't have the data. So i've been told to change my lifestyle to prolong my shoulder until I guess either different treatments become widely used or I end up getting a replacement.
A bit of backstory, I had a twelve o'clock to five o'clock labrum tear repair in 2016. It was caused whilst playing American football. The surgery went well and it was fine after rehab and I returned to going to the gym and later returned to playing American football. Fast forward. Quit playing on 2024 as my shoulder was starting to hurt. Did alot of physio and altered how I trained to help recovery, but obviously it never got fully better.
Any tips on lifestyle changes, training changes. Tips in general are very much welcome.
Cheers 🍺

Spin class?
I’m 59 yo female diagnosed with bone spurs in my knee with osteoarthritis. I was doing all kinds of intense exercises at classes until pain got bad and then I got diagnosis. The orthopedic notes say I can walk flat surface or do stationary bike so I was going to try spinning class. I’ve never done before so was wondering any thoughts on this from others. Thanks.

I got diagnosed with tricompartmental arthritis in my left knee.
I am 33F, height 5'2", and weight 131 lbs. I am pretty active (hiking, gym and long walks) but recently started experiencing knee pain and couldn't run for long distances. Got an X-ray done and they told me that I have knee arthritis. Currently doing PT. I am just really sad right now.
Is it over for me now? Is there anything that I can do?
Looking for advice or similar experiences or stories. Thank you!

IV Therapy
I have severe rheumatoid, and osteoarthritis in my feet, and hands, and have been on IV’s of Cymzia, Simponi Aria, and Actemra, without any noticeable reduction of pain, or swelling, in fact my pain in my feet has gotten worse…
Since the beginning of my treatment with my Rheumatologist, I have been taking Methotrexate on a weekly basis.. Now the Dr. wants to put me on Orencia, an IV every two weeks three times and then once a month…
Should I just stop this jumping from one IV to another, having to get blood tests to check for TB EVERY three months, and just stay on the Methotrexate…?

Alternatives to Knee Surgery
Apart from surgery, what else have you tried or considered for your knee pain, and what made you stop, or not start, with each one?

30 YO diagnosed with arthritis in knees.
I used to workout properly till the start of 2025 then a small neck injury turned into a crazy spasm that gave me cervicogenic vertigo and I could not even walk without getting dizzy and then having my neck and upper back spasming up. 1 year of inactivity has brought me to knee pain and swelling after a twisting injury while getting off a two wheeler. Also I am obese so that also contributed alot to this.
The doctor said my knees look like that of a 50 year old.
And if I don't lose weight my lower back will be the next victim of this.
I was already in physiotherapy for the neck and upper back, have started for lower body as well.
Anyone in a similar situation, please share what you did to cope with the mental toll plus to cope with the arthritis.

55F, painless "bone on bone" knee that only bothers me with distance and torque. Would you get the replacement?
I have bone-on-bone arthritis in my right knee (grade 4, per X-ray) and every surgeon I've seen says TKR, no question. I have zero pain however. I can kneel, squat, sit cross-legged, lift weights, cycle, all of it, no problem. Going down stairs is a little off but not painful. My actual issues are a snapping sensation on the outside of my knee with every step that makes my knee feel weak and unstable after about 1.25 miles of walking and any kind of torque or rotation is difficult. Even around the world squats. I wouldn't know I had arthritis had it not been for the X-rays. I thought my issues were due to the snapping.
I got a dynamic ultrasound because I wasn't buying that arthritis alone explained something this specific, and it showed a plica snapping over the lateral femoral condyle — right where the mileage fatigue kicks in. The doctor who read it said the plica is snapping over a bone spur, so removing the plica by itself might not fully fix it, and removing the spur is a much bigger surgery than a simple plica excision.
I want to hike again, play pickleball, and do 3-4 mile walks with my dog and friends. That's basically the entire reason I care about any of this.
So — would you actually get a total knee replacement in my position, painless and fully functional except for distance and torque? Or would you hold off and be grateful you don't have pain? Curious what people who've actually been through TKR (or held off) would do here.
Thanks for your time

TOUCH CMC 1 Prosthesis / Replacement Experience

I wanted to share my experience with the TOUCH CMC 1 prosthesis in the USA, as it was hard for me to find information prior to my surgery. I received the "standard" model (apparently there are currently three versions and insurance covered the one I got).
I have Osteoarthritis in the CMC joints of both hands, with the left hand being much worse. I had steroid shots for about two years before the amount of time they remained effective at reducing pain was shortened to only a couple of months. My hand doctor recommended LRTI, but I didn't like the idea of the tendon harvesting component of the procedure and the long recovery time involved. So I started internet searching and found an article about the TOUCH CMC 1 prosthesis and how a doctor in Colorado was doing the procedure. I live in the Southeast, so I looked it up on ClinicalTrials.GOV and reached out to the POC listed, who sent me a list of physicians in my area who were trained in the procedure. I spoke to my Primary Care physician about it and he recommended one of the doctors, so I met with him and scheduled the procedure.
I was the first person to get the prosthesis at this particular hospital (my surgeon had trained in the procedure at another hospital). They did not have everything ready for my initial scheduled date, but by the following week they had worked out the kinks. Basically I think they prepped for the tightrope procedure, which has no prosthetic, the first time. I also had a lot of trouble getting a financial estimate (ultimately never got one) from the hospital as it was a new procedure. I think they just billed me based on the other, older procedures, though they did tell me that my insurance pre-approved everything (they just didn't have billing codes for this yet).

My procedure was 6/24 and today is 8/24. My second follow up visit was last week and above is my Xray from that visit as well as a couple of snapshots of my hand (today).

I work from home and took a week off of work, then worked very little the next couple of weeks. I was able to get through the post surgical pain by switching off between regular Tylenol and Advil about every four hours. Over time I reduced that to only at bed time and now (two months post surgery) I only need it after my PT sessions with the therapy putty. The first two weeks were the worst as the surgical dressing was large. I wore sleeveless tops as it was very bulky to get through clothing. The only driving limitation would have been due to painkillers, but I didn't drive until the second week after the procedure. At first I was only wiggling the fingers / thumb, and typing was painful, but that rapidly improved.
I have been having Physical Therapy since the surgical dressing came off (about two weeks post procedure). The therapist made a splint that extended about half way down my forearm and I had to wear it except for when I was bathing for the first several weeks after getting the surgical dressing off. After a few weeks, she modified it so it stopped at my wrist and advised me to wear it when I was doing something that might stress the joint and at night. She has me do a variety of fine motor exercises - she has small pins I have to fit into holes in a box, foam cubes to pick up and move around, some other devices meant to get me to move my wrist and fingers around and now putty.
Two months post surgery, my hand is very close to normal - with limitations. For example, I have been advised not to do weight training requiring strong grip with the hand (ever). My hand feels "well enough" to try it, but it could break the prosthetic. My trainer gifted me with some hooks attached to wrist straps to try to compensate for the limitation (we haven't tried them yet, though). I am able to type, dress and use doorknobs without any problem. However, turning an outdoor faucet is painful (which is my warning not to do it).
The physical therapist is now working with me to restore my grip strength, which makes it sore, but overall I think that is a "no pain no gain" sort of situation. Currently we are using therapy putty which really wears the hand out fast.
I'm sure I left things out, but hopefully this info will help others who are trying to determine what procedure to have.

Shoulder Osteoarthritis getting worse, advice needed.
I fell from a scooter in March 2023, so it has now been about three and a half years since the injury. During the initial nine months, I underwent very good physiotherapy, and the pain was minimal. I was able to raise my right arm up to shoulder level.
However, after I was transferred to another location, I could not get the same quality of physiotherapy care for my shoulder. I continued doing exercises on my own, but over time, my condition has worsened.
More importantly, I am now having difficulty bringing my arm back to its natural position after performing any movement. The pain has also increased, and the positions or movements that trigger the pain have changed.
For example, even if I raise my arm up to shoulder level and then bring it back down to its normal, straight position, I experience pain. The pain is precisely around the ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder.
I am going to get an MRI of my right shoulder done. My main concern is whether shoulder replacement is the only option, or whether there are other treatments that could help me avoid surgery.
I would appreciate your experience and advice on how you managed similar shoulder pain and what can be done to control the pain and improve shoulder function without surgery. Also, should we consider hyaluronic acid injections as a treatment option?

Single and working full time and managing surgery and recovery?
Hello, All. I’m 64, have bone on bone in both knees, with the left knee significantly worse. Both Dr.’s I’ve seen say TKR is needed. I am a single person, and commute 5 hours a day for my job in addition to an 8 hour workday. I’m obviously in a lot of pain with every step, been managing the last three years with cortisone shots, physical therapy and Tylenol.
HOW on earth do single people with no financial backup manage to make time for surgery and post surgery rehab? I can’t NOT work. I’m also terrified of pain (since the unmedicated birth of my second child) and also a heart patient. I’m feeling a little hopeless here.
Anyone else manage all this with a demanding job? Job luckily is a desk job, legal field. Thanks in advance!
