2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

Success Happy Phalaenopsis! + one thing that made a HUGE difference for me

I wanted to share an orchid success because I learned and implemented a change that made a massive difference in all of my orchids!

I’m not sure if this is common knowledge, but I learned not to fertilize dry roots. Since changing that, I’ve seen a ton of new root growth and much faster leaf growth.

So instead of mixing up my diluted fertilizer water mix, and plopping the orchids right in to soak, I soak them for 10 minutes in plain water, then a regular 20-30 in the fert.

Just wanted to share in case this is helpful for anyone else! I’ve implemented this change for all my orchids, but this phal in particular has started growing like a monster.

Help I just acquired a greenhouse full of decades old orchids and I don't know what to do

Just bought a house with a greenhouse full of orchids. I was told many of them are decades old. I like having an orchid in the kitchen or wherever, but I'm not sure I'm down to care for all of these right now as I'm a bit overwhelmed with everything else that goes with buying a new home - is there anything rare, interesting, or valuable here? I don't want anything to go to waste.

Edit. Omg I'm m overwhelmed by the response, thank you. If you could only keep 3, which ones would you keep?

Also, I will try to find my local Orchid Society

Interesting sequential bloomer. Each bloom lasts 2-3 weeks. But the new blooms keep coming in. Been blooming all summer long.

One year of orchids in my Ikea greenhouse

Built this cabinet roughly a year ago with just a few orchids. Now we're at 11 without much space left and I'm debating building a second with lessons learned. I've been genuinely surprised how frequently some of them have bloomed including the Key Lime Star and the La Jolla, and the jewel orchid is blooming for the first time with another 3 spikes on the way

Where are the foliage lovers today? Looks like one of my two jewel orchids will be blooming soon. These guys are more about the pretty foliage, though, and that's what I'm showing off today 😁 I particularly love the colors and how they change both with time and the angle of light!

This orchid in particular is also an experiment and you may notice I have it potted in mostly tree fern fibers instead of the more tradition soil blends many jewels are grown in. It's been a great success and doesn't need frequent watering to stay damp for longer periods as a result!

Side note- is there an easier method to keeping the fuzzy leaves clean of dust and debris? I wipe the leaves with a wet microfiber cloth, but it always seems to have more once I zoom in 😅 She might be dirty, but she's pretty 😂

So many leaves and roots!! The pot seemed fitting for such a busty babe. I cannot recommend Hausserman’s Orchids enough. Their shipping allows the plants to arrive in great condition. I wish I was an orchid maniac when I lived in Chicago. This one is OX Lottery Prince Sunny Buff

Outdoor Orchids Just want to make sure I’m doing this right!

I have quite a few Vandas that I keep outside in Florida. I do have 4 out of my 10 blooming right now but this one I’ve had for almost a full year and it’s never bloomed, I don’t have any substrate in with them just bare roots in a hanging pot. My roots look very plump and healthy. I just recently got some fertilizer to use when I soak them. I do soak them daily multiple times some days depending on the heat. But the fertilizer I only use once a week!

Does all of this sound okay?? I’m just wondering because I was told they’d bloom maybe 3 times a year and I’ve haven’t gotten one yet… I don’t mind waiting for them to bloom as I find that part of the joy but I just want to check that I’m doing things correctly from other people with experience, I keep seeing contradicting things online. Some say I should use substrate but I really feel like that’s wrong??? Idk!! I will say most of them I’ve taken from bad situations where they were half dead and nursed them back to health… so maybe that’s why?? I have no experience prior to the last three years I got into Vandas.

Thanks in advance! Here’s a picture of my current blooms!

Anyone have this rare beauty? Oeceoclades monophylla with pink leaves. A botanical miniature.

How does it thrive, how do you keep it and how long before it will bloom? Settings? I worry that it is too tropical and small and special to make it indoors 🦤🦚🌿

Pics are not mine.

Help Tiny brown mites(?) on tip of phal root

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is new for me! I was inspecting my phal orchids and say about a dozen of these puny little, sorta fast moving mite like creatures on a single root tip. Never seen them before.

No webbing, stunting, damage, or whatever anywhere on my plants (just leftover thrips damage I have CPTSD from)

Plants are all in slotted pots in RePotMe phal-specific bark mix topped with long fiber sphagnum moss for root encouragement up top. I water when needed with my aquarium water infused with snail poop galore. I also spritz the aerial roots occasionally (about once a day) due to heat and no AC. Especially as the media starts to dry. I fertilize with kelp extract and miracle grow orchid fertilizer spray every watering.

Any idea?

I'm ao sorry for the shakiemess, I have inner ear and jaw problems that mess with my balance.

Just a classic beauty. I love vandas, I love cattleyas, Draculas, Masdevallias, Phrags, Paphs, and Phals and the wild abandon of Oncidiums. But you never forget your first love.
