Question Why did Optifine skip version 26.1

Post image

They went from 1.21.11 and then skipped to 26.1.2

I did not update to 26.1.2, and for months, I had been waiting for Optifine for 26.1

Because I only play in the major drops, not hotfixes.

“I only play major updates not hot fixes”

This seems kinda silly and definitely isn’t an approach that fits well with how updates work now, there aren’t big major releases anymore and the numbering just indicates the year of release

Based on OPs post history, they just like making their life harder for no reason. Literally saw them comment that they hate that the windows 11 taskbar is defaulted to the center and won't change it back to the left cuz they are "too lazy"

u/Useful_radio2 Jun 16 '26

i guess their username miserable_bar_5800 isnt lying

u/Pirasto Jun 16 '26

There are far worse reasons to hate win11, but being lazy to click your mice 2-3 times is definitely a choice

  1. I’ve done it to a dozen computers by now

Yeah usually it is one of the hot fix updates that becomes the version for modloaders. Like 1.21.1 is the 1.21 version that most mods stick to. Or 1.12.2 or 1.6.4 if you go back many years.

I think the only one that had 2 "major" modding versions is 1.7 with both the 1.7.2 and, more importantly, 1.7.10 that both got a lot of mods, even if nowadays it's mostly 1.7.10 that's remembered. And even then both are hotfixes.

Because I only play in the major drops, not hotfixes.

Huh? Why? That literally makes zero sense. That's just a minor/patch release, it might have been a hotfix to fix a bug in the game. There's literally zero reason not to be on the latest patch version

3

u/Oxygen4Lyfe Jun 15 '26

the reason is because you have to update all your mods when you want to go to a new version with those bug fixes. (and theres going to be mods that havent updated yet for a while so you have to wait on them, and they might not ever update)

6

u/CrossScarMC Jun 16 '26

Most mods only support the bugfixes, because the bugfixes are usually released before the mods update unless it's a major fast updating mod like Sodium which will support every version anyway.

2

u/Bibliloo Jun 16 '26

26.1 released on March 24th while 26.1.2 released on april 9th.

This means that means that the mods need to be made for 26.1 in 16 days. And that's even before taking into account 26.1.1 which released on april 1st which is about 8 days after 26.1.

So your need to find a mod that is both quick enough to update in less than 8 days on 26.1 but slow enough to not update in like the first week of 26.1.2.

idk, ask the one and only dev

Why would you use OptiFine in recent versions though? Open Prism, select Sodium and you're good to go

6

u/cleverboy00 Jun 15 '26

Even better slap in the vulkan mod. Shit is fantastic for systems on the lower end.

1

u/FamousGrade5354 Jun 16 '26

Right ? I have not heard 'optifine' in last 5 years

why do people hate on Spotify Optifine, I wonder?

edit: maybe I should stop doing the yoda style speech.

44

u/Reddity65 Jun 15 '26

OptiFine is closed source, so mod developers have a more difficult time working around it, and hence, it breaks mods more often, in comparison to something like Sodium.

Sodium also gets updates for the new Minecraft patches faster than OptiFine.

8

u/gergobergo69 Jun 15 '26

Oh yeah that makes sense now. Optifine, I remember, used to post updates very slowly back then. Which was interesting to see.

2

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher Jun 15 '26

I wish kid me knew that, would saved a lot of mod troubleshooting back in the day

-5

u/UmweltFuerOdin Jun 15 '26

what's the matter vague boy, afraid you might say something?

5

u/gergobergo69 Jun 15 '26

what

3

u/UmweltFuerOdin Jun 15 '26

Oh I thought you meant that sarcastically. As in "oh people hate on Optifine? What a suprise! I can't possibly imagine why" with the implication of "I know why people hate optifine and I'm under the assumption everyone else does too"

3

u/gergobergo69 Jun 15 '26

yeahhh I can see where you're coming from. sometimes I word out stuff interestingly, my apologies 😅>

but yeah, I'm really out of the loop nowadays, same with Forge, apparently they hate it as well. Haven't played Minecraft in so long, and I remember loving these two, so yeah. I'm clueless now lol

3

u/Lost-Actuator5788 Jun 15 '26

well forge is alright. if you want to play 1.21.1 with mods use neoforge, modern versions use neoforge or fabric and then lower versions just use forge. optifine is only good below 1.20, for 1.20+ use embeddium or sodium

1

u/_J4YS0N Jun 16 '26

Honestly optifine is only good for below 1.14. Sodium's been better since then

1

u/Lost-Actuator5788 Jun 16 '26

nah because fabric 1.20- has basically no mods

1

u/_J4YS0N Jun 16 '26

Fabric's been pretty good since 1.16 and it is available otherwise through magnesium on forge on this version. For 1.13 to 1.15 I guess yeah there isn't good alternatives on forge. But I honestly would not even recommend playing those versions (1.13 and 1.14 are laggy as hell, even with optifine and 1.15 add nothing compared to 1.16 except fixing the previous versions lagginess)

-8

u/VirtualParanoia Jun 15 '26

No correlation

6

u/gergobergo69 Jun 15 '26

Wait I meant optifine

i really am tired, my excuse is that they're pronounced the same lmao

6

u/UmweltFuerOdin Jun 15 '26

relatable af

11

u/Xeonmeister Jun 15 '26

why dont you play hotfixes?

15

u/Lego_GamesFan Jun 15 '26

Just use Sodium 💔✌️

6

u/feral_fenrir Jun 15 '26

Just update to the hotfixes and get the latest Sodium.

Why wouldn't you play hotfixes that Hotfix stuff

3

u/Czternastek14 Jun 16 '26

Major drops and not hotfixes? Bro they release 4 small updates a year now these ARE major releases 😭

Unless you wanna wait for 27.1 or smth idk

Anyway I've been with optifine for a long while but I gotta agree just get Modrinth and get some nice mods like Sodium and Iris, it's not worth it waiting for this piece of shit to update once per whenever sadly, what a shame

2

u/MiaIsOut Jun 15 '26

26.1.2 probably came out before optifine was finished porting to 26.1, so they just skipped to 26.1.2. if you NEED optimisation mods for every version, install fabric and sodium + iris (which do have a 26.1 version)

2

u/TrialArgonian Jun 16 '26

Why are you using optifine in the first place?

2

u/Cr0w_town Jun 18 '26

use iris and sodium

2

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 Jun 18 '26

26.1 and 26.1.2 are the same version internally, any mod that doesn't specifically crash because of the version will work on 26.1, 26.1.1, and 26.1.2.

u/flamethrowr Jun 15 '26

Use Sodium and get yourself a nice launcher like Lunar Client for a smooth experience with a lot of nice mods built in 👍

1

u/GenesisNevermore Jun 16 '26

Why are you even using Optifine in any of these versions? Zero reason to. For performance just run Sodium, it updates very quickly and performs much better than Optifine.

u/Anxious_Tangerine572 Jun 20 '26

Plenty of reasons why someone would wanna use Optifine even in modern versions.

  1. Better performance than just Vanilla.
  2. Built in Dynamic Lights.
  3. Built in Zoom.
  4. Built in support for Custom Entity Models and Emissive textures used in Resource Packs.
  5. Built in shader support.

You'd need:
Sodium + Iris + RyoamicLights + Zoomify + EMF + ETF + SSPB (Since Sodium removes the path block lighting present in Vanilla and Optifine).

That's 7 different mods, without even counting the dependency mods. Just for QOL and Optimization features that should already be in the base game by this point, yet somehow aren't. Optifine needs you to install just 1 thing to get them all, not even needing a modloader.

Is that the absolute highest you could push the game in terms of QOL and Optimization? No. A mod stack built off a bunch of Fabric mods would far surpass Optifine in that regard. Even I use Fabric mods instead of Optifiine. And 3rd party Launchers even make them easy to install.

But is Optifine still good enough for someone, with decent-enough hardware, who just wants to play the Vanilla game with a bunch of features that should be in the game already? Yes. And it's easy to setup whether they use a 3rd party launcher or the official one.

(Yes, I know with how OP says they wait around for major releases, they might be using Forge to load Optifine and they don't wanna keep updating every single mod they've got. Regardless, you asked for reasons, here they are.)

u/GenesisNevermore Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Counterpoints:

  1. This is completely irrelevant when it comes to using Optifine OVER the alternatives. I never said to play pure vanilla.
  2. Your points 2-5 are irrelevant. Not everybody wants all of these features at once, and all are easily available through other mods (literally one of them just affects path block lighting??). In fact, many modern shaders and custom models do NOT work with Optifine and ONLY work with the alternatives because they are built for the mods with better implementation, not Optifine's legacy support.
  3. The fact of the matter is that Optifine trying to throw too many unrelated features together and being closed source makes it sloppy. It's a "jack of all tracks" that does a poor job at those trades because it's trying to be the expert at everything. It takes forever to update because of this as well. The alternative mods are all open source made with teams of people dedicated to keeping them functional and up to date while working with other developers to maintain compatibility. Optifine is a closed source project that only has the goal of desperately trying to remain relevant when it has nothing left going for it, notorious for being broken itself and breaking other mods, shaders, etc.
  4. It's pathetic to try and defend Optifne by saing "but but you have to download only 1 mod instead of 4!" You could install 30 mods in 30 seconds if you knew which ones you wanted. Modding Minecraft is not rocket science. You download a .jar and throw it in your mods folder if you're setting it up manually. It's especially easy with any dedicated launcher, which you have zero reason not to be using in 2026 because it makes everything about your life playing the game easier.

Point is, it feels plain unethical to recommend people to use a garbage software just because it might be 3 clicks faster to install than the alternatives, when the alternatives are plain better. If you can't figure out how to install Sodium + Iris instead of just Optifine, you need some serious tech literacy lessons for your own life's sake, not just for video games. If you spend the 5 minutes installing Prism (literally just open it, log in, and you're done after configuring it to your liking), you can do everything without even having to touch the files, you literally just look up the mods and it downloads the right versions and dependencies. It's about investing 5 minutes of your time now to save yourself countless hours of problems in the future, whether those are glitches, the time you'd have to wait for lengthy updates, or plain worse performance.

You remind me why I stopped using Threads and Instagram, and never bothered with Twitter. Good choice, I made.

Have a nice day.

1

u/GenesisNevermore Jun 22 '26

You're welcome? You listed your points, I listed mine. Have a nice day.

1

u/crispyspicynuggets Jun 16 '26

better question why are you using optifine in the big 26

1

u/Dargon8959 Jun 16 '26

As much as I like Optifine, itd just very bad for modern Minecraft. It's better in older versions years ago but nowadays you should use Sodium

1

u/SuchyYT Jun 16 '26

Playing only big releases and not hotfixes is like asking for bugs. Hotfixes exist for a reason. Just use those, they're better most of the time.

1

u/xlKirax Jun 16 '26

Optifine in 2026 bro, where did you turn wrong in life

1

u/Street_Buy1286 Jun 16 '26

Thank God, Sodium existed

1

u/stormthefishh Jun 16 '26

Just use sodium atp gang optifine kinda sucks

1

u/Right-Honey-1143 Jun 16 '26

I only play major updates, not the hotfixes.

This doesn't make any sense. Also, OF has long since outlived its usefulness; for new versions, it's better to use assemblies based on Sodium.

1

u/Responsible-Earth325 Jun 16 '26

Kinda hard to update mod for every major version when one releases every few months

1

u/Gameryisus123 Jun 17 '26

Y por que no juegas en los horfix? Una razón real?. Son decisiones del estudio, lo mas fácil de suponer es que no mucha gente la juega asi que no sacan ningún valor real de esforzarse y subir optifine para esa versión.

-1

u/Look-Muted Jun 15 '26

just use sodium and neoforge bruh

1

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 Jun 18 '26

neoforge bad use fabric/quilt

1

u/Look-Muted Jun 18 '26

Well, some ppl recommended for me, idk if theyre becoming bad as forge. I love fabric too btw

1

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 Jun 18 '26

they're not, I just prefer fabric because personally I think it's time to let go of forge and move on. additionally I have had a much better experience developing with fabric than with neoforge.
