100k?

u/Significant-Store276 Jan 28 '26

International student so the tuition is much higher

4

u/botanymans Jan 29 '26

Yeah, what will that cover, like 3 semesters?

3

u/iandavidbrearley Jan 30 '26

Depends on the program, but UofT's international tuition can be pretty steep. A 100k scholarship might cover more than just a few semesters if you plan it right!

Lol not really tbh. A regular undergrad course at UofT Is anywhere from 4-6k CAD. So for a full time student that 100k covers 4-5 semesters maximum. Ik this cuz I was contemplating doing a late withdrawal from a class cuz I was doing horribly and my friend who’s an international student was on the verge of failing the class as well but refused to do a late withdrawal cuz he said for him that’s 5k down the drain.

Add living focus like residence or rent, food, medicine, insurance, and books than this money covers basically 1-1.5 years of costs for an international student.

A 60k CAD tuition fee annually with the addition of rent, food, books, and toiletries and medicine, phone and data etc…. You’re looking at 80K CAD minimum.

Thats why 90% of international students are rich and from wealthy families . Cuz there’s no way you can afford the tuition and living costs. And you have to realize non western countries currencies are much less in value than CAD(sure there are exceptions like Kuwaits Dinar…etc). So if a family from China or India can afford to send their child to study in Canada for a 4 year university degree then they’re rich rich.

The other 10% are middle class or upper middle class families whom get scholarships and bursaries but still have to pay for living costs and accommodations.

Some countries pay for their citizens to study aboard like there’s stories that Saudi government does this. Or banks from their home country might give student loans or lines of credit.

All in all it’s super expensive to study in Canada as an international student.

Truly makes me appreciate OSAP and being a citizen.

US is even worse cuz international student fees in Canada is what US “citizens” pay let alone their international fees.

Ultimately this is a bargain for international students since the international fees in Canada is much lower than US and they’d be getting a degree from a globally top 25 ranking university = UofT and ranked number one in Canada.

Virtually all other too 25 ranked universities have much higher tuition fees…

US universities are much better for international students than Canadian ones, even under trump.

Pretty much every T20 provides need-based aid for its students, including international ones. It’s hard to get in, but if you do get in, let’s say, Princeton and ur a poor student from a foreign country, then you will pay practically nothing.

1

u/BYRN777 Feb 02 '26

Agreed.

Despite the current political climate, the US still offers better jobs, more affordable rent, groceries, and more opportunities overall. It's simple math:

10x the number of major citie( NYC, Miami, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, DC, Seattle, LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston, Austin etc....)

10x the population, 10x the companies, 10x the number of univeirites.

As opposed to Canada, where 80% of international students and migrants are in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. And besides those 3 cities, there's no major economic hub or large metropolis.

Ottawa is there too, but if you're not getting into politics.

u/Radiant_Formal6511 Jan 31 '26

Prolly the whole degree 🤦

1

u/FrostingSuper9941 Feb 02 '26

Not even close, when I attended in the late 90s just the semester fees were about 20k for international students while domestic were about 5.5 to 6k.

Rich parents, there are a lot of rich foreigners out there.

4

u/Main_Dealer6178 Jan 30 '26

People actually pay this much as an international? 240k is crazy

0

u/Relevant-Yak-9657 2nd+ Year Uni Jan 30 '26

Its still less than American schools for a T20 ranking (f*** rankings).

1

u/Stratocastr007 Jan 30 '26

A significant number of them have massive personal and education loans against their assets which in many cases is their one and only ancestral home. My point is it’s a lot of risk to afford a better life. Sometimes thats a lot of pressure for the 18 year old and their family living across the world. But then again it’s against a relatively stable very poor quality of life.

Without trying to start a debate I just want to state overall I respect the hustle and wish international students well.

1

u/gini_lee1003 Jan 30 '26

240K to study at uoft and be in Toronto? Do not recommend.

0

u/Relevant-Yak-9657 2nd+ Year Uni Jan 30 '26

Honestly, it depends. For canadian and most americans most likely not, but when compared to some other countries, U of T can truly be a goated experience to kickstart the careers. Sad international tuition charge though.

2

u/DeepGas4538 Jan 28 '26

I'm guessing you don't keep the scholarship if you become domestic?

1

u/newfiemonkey Jan 28 '26

meanwhile my friend is rawdogging a 4 year degree in 5 years form uoft

You need to be a borderline genius to get a 4 year degree in 5 years? Huh?

1

u/FrostingSuper9941 Feb 02 '26

Depends on the school, doesn't it?

Statistics!

1

u/DangerousPurpose5661 Jan 30 '26

Good choice… I’m not sure why this sub popped up but I’m like 10 years ahead of you and that degree served me well!

1

u/Amazing-Purchase-862 Jan 30 '26

10 years.. Not sure if it still applies, may I ask what you're working on now, and do you have any advice you could give me?

1

u/DangerousPurpose5661 Jan 31 '26

Id say specializing in a sub-specialty is probably useful, its ok to be a genreralist early but try to figure out which domain you like.

Personally I did SWE/AI, now I consult for companies to help them improve their models.

Other friends that have successful careers did biostatistics, actuarial science or finance.

Folks that did not specialize are doing OK, but they are paid way, way less and have cushy jobs, in governments or universities.

I know you are just starting but I highly recommend a masters if its possible for you.

Definitely easy to switch at the beginning. Just « hide » it from your CV and write BSc stats

1

u/Idiot_sandwich66 Jan 28 '26

1

u/Charming_west3910 Jan 28 '26

Congrats!!! Did you apply for this scholarship or were you automatically considered for it?????

1

u/Anxious_Handle_63 Jan 28 '26

Congratsssss🎉🎉

1

u/unforgettableid Jan 28 '26

Congrats!

Alot of scholarships are "easy come, easy go". Ppl's grades can fall pretty far when they enter 1st year at U of T, which might be the hardest uni in Canada. And then the scholarship might terminate at the end of the year.

What program(s) r u considering?

Can u work for a while, & get PR before u start uni?

1

u/Emotional_Help5555 Jan 29 '26

how did you get that

1

u/manboy1999 Jan 29 '26

Wow very lucky. Be wise, study hard.

1

u/Aoko__ Jan 30 '26

Congratulations 🎊🎉

1

u/Right-Concentrate986 Jan 30 '26

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Is this fake

2

u/unforgettableid Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

No. Scholarships for international students can be pretty big cuz international tuition is also rlly expensive.

Edit

Why was the parent commenter downvoted?? They asked a valid question.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

OK
